Re:Finally....Think about it - when was the last time you actually *looked forward* to something on the radio? And when was the lst time on TV?
That's why I run an icecast station - if I want to hear it, it goes on the 'radio'.
More seriously, though, there is the odd radio program worth hearing. I try to catch Ideas on a regular basis. There's also stuff like Public Radio that'll often air interesting stuff.

1. Caps have a place.
- At the beginning of sentences and proper nouns.
2. Have you tried running a server with Gentoo?
- I dont think so, if you had you would have realised that there are some handy features in updating a system.
-(And a solid user base whom want to help each other; you don't seem like you want to.)
3. Have you look at the versions of software in Debian-Woody(Stable)?
- If you had you would have noticed that its not that current, I have some problems in waiting for a new version of software to be realeased, security. So you need to update apache..
# emerge apache ; /etc/init.d/apache restart
Oh look im updated, I know that debian and others have similar sytems but the benifits in working from sources it time in waiting for that binary release.
Anyway I'm waffling on now..

Yep I understand and also think we need a more friendly website to produce information for alternatives to Microsoft software. For those of you that have seen the Blue Screen of Death, goto FuckMicrosoft.com. For those of you that enjoy a little spice with your operating system, try GNU/Lesbian or RTFM OS. And for those of you that always RTFM, try Emacs OS; just remember that when using Emacs OS, you need a good wordprocessor and the best one you can get is here.

Toledo Book Exchange
This might look like a shameless plug for my website (which it is) but I believe that a Student Book Exchange is a very nice idea. It saves tons of money. I am a grad student at the University of Toledo and I have been trying to get people here to start using a website I have setup for just that purpose. If you would like to check it out, please visit http://dinki.mine.nu/tbe/ I like to call it the Toledo Book Exchange. I strongly encourage students from other Universities to setup their own.

Blender IRC Tutorial
Regarding Blender's UI: here's how you can form your own opinion.
A pretty good IRC Tutorial on Blender had been previously done in Freenode. The IRC Logs are available.
It can get you starting pretty quick, even if you are a total newbie to this kind of thing.

Re:Amateur
Any professional pornographer has a mouse with a middle button so he can middle-click the link to open it in a new tab. Do you realize Control-Click requires both hands?
Porn joke aside, the middle click is a godsend. Even better, though, is linky which goes in immediately after a new install. heck, I even went so far as to mod my daily reading list to better make use of the plugin.Yeah I prob do spend too much time surfing, but it's little things like this that make that possible

Re:heh
Have you looked into Lesbian GNU/Linux? It's an existing distro that promises many of the features that you're looking at. Perhaps you could work with them instead of completely reinventing the wheel.

FAT? COW?
What the hell is wrong with you? She looks like she's in pretty decent shape to me. A lot better than I was at 18, or even 15. I'm sorry that curves turn you off. I'm even more sorry that you help to perpetuate the idea that women have to starve themselves and work out obsessively to be beautiful.
If you think she's a fat cow, I'd hate to know what you think about me. (I was 17-18 when these pictures were taken.)
But if starved chicks are the only ones attractive to you, I guess you've been single for a while now, huh? -
Re:Great reading time
I had a similar experience, as an undergrad TA (my main duties were to run labs & hold office hours). Generally, I could kick back and do some work on my thesis or homework during office hours... but during my busiest weeks (midterms and finals), everyone came in with questions, so I couldn't count on getting any work done.
Most of my professors are pretty good about office hours. And often, there will be some evening/late-night hours for CS classes; they know that's when the most people will show up for help. -

I'm considering doing the following with my music
What I am considering for my album:
1. Distribute freely as 160bps (-r3mix) MP3s over P2P, Web etc.
2. Place "Please tip artists at URL" text in the ID3 tag and set up a tip-jar (ala tipster) on my site; Ask (politely, no DRM) for $2.0 for those enjoying my entire album, 25c per song otherwise - 'Honor-system-wise'.
3. Offer a 'no-middleman' directly-sold CD for $4 - $5. Cost is roughly $1.
4. Profit?... ;)
I figure that those who enjoy my music *and* can afford it, will pay / buy the album, like they would in a store. Those who don't/can't -- would not have bought the album anyway. Basically this is Shareware Music...
And this way I get more per-album than through a label *and* I support freedom as I see it. Labels are just over-rated advertising and public-relations agencies... <plug>So why don't you preview an MP3 of my latest track before vocals and before mastering...</plug> -

Re:Usually in this order
Of course the link to my site is wrong. It leads to a directory listing instead of a pretty web page. For anyone interested in sneaking at peak at my life here is the proper link:
Albums -
Usually in this order
First, my site to see if any new pictures have been posted http://pihlopase.mine.nu/albums
http://slashdot.org
http://art.gnome.org
http://themedepot.org
http://freshmeat.themes.net
http://debianplanet.org
http://gnome.org
http://google.com
Then I usually log into Blackboard at school to see if I have any new assignments or if any messages have been posted since I last checked. Then it's off to my numerous webmail accounts with netscape.com, cup of coffee, hop on the bus, go to class. Sneak a peak at Slashdot while the teacher is not looking. lather, rinse, repeat -

Curving
The best professors I've had, and the ones I respected most, were ones who did not curve their grades. They make their expectations very clear to the students and tell them exactly what kind of work will get an A, B, or C. Then they stick to these expectations all throughout the term - even if the class as a whole starts doing badly.
The kicker? Generally the distribution of grades ends up as a much more accurate Bell curve than that of my professors who "curve" their grades.
The advisor to my senior research project is also one who doesn't believe in curving. So, we have a well-balanced and solidly-grounded project... but we're probably going to end up with a B if we work hard - because the advisor saw the potential of this project, and we didn't live up to it. -
Re:Girls in CSI was trying to give a broad overview of what I've learned and done. Maybe you can't read between the lines; here are some specifics:
- I learned about the innards of my PC in my Assembly Language & Machine Organization class, and also in Operating Systems. You have to know what the parts are, and how they work, to even understand the rest of the work in those classes.
- All the homework assignments in OSs were to make specific changes to the Linux kernel.
- Another class for you: Programming Language Concepts. This is a sophmore-level class at my school in which you begin to design/implement a "new" programming language.
- Did you notice I mentioned my senior project which incorporates a genetic algorithm? We've only been able to find one project that's remotely similar to the research we're doing.
I agree that intense study of HCI doesn't belong in the CS curriculum. However, I think every programmer should at least learn some of the basic lessons of HCI, since every programmer writes code that will eventually be used by someone else. -
Re:Girls in CS
I agree. In many of my earlier CS classes, there were guys & girls who were just in it for the money, and didn't really care that much about what they were learning, or why. Most of those tended to get weeded out by the sophmore-level classes, though. (CS is harder than it originally looked to those people.)
I am an odd case - I switched into CS, and I am a woman. My original major was in the management department; when I decided I wanted to learn more about computers, I could have easily switched to an MIS degree. But I want to be taken seriously. So I became a CS major. It's been a long, hard year since I switched, but I don't regret it. I'm doing research on creating an adaptive website using a genetic algorithm, and I'm only one class short of graduating on time. I plan to go on to grad school in CS - I want to get a M.S. in Human-Computer Interaction.
I switched after the dot-coms tanked, and I knew it. The important thing for me is not whether I get a job in IT (not likely right now anyway), but what I've learned about how computers work. I can open up my PC and muck around with it now, if I wanted to. I can hold an intelligent conversation about the pros and cons of a language. I know how to customize a Linux kernel.
People always told me college was about becoming an educated person, not about getting a job. I didn't understand them until I became a CS major. For the first time in my life, I'm studying something simply because I enjoy it (although I might not agree while doing some of my assignments). I think my study of computer science has made me a more well-rounded person. -
