when you click it though you are actually sent to msn in order to transfer your cookie from any of msn's domains which includes hotmail (any of the *.msn.com domains) in order to track you personally (if you use hotmail notice hm is actually a subdomain of msn)

so while you click on the story link of

you are actually sent to here

why ? so they can steal your hotmail/msn cookie and transfer it to the msnbc domain and track you across any of microsofts domains (hence the msid = microsoft id or guid), this gets round all browser cookie privacy limitations that browser manufacturers (including mozilla/msie/ns) implementation so websites cannot read cookies from other domains and is a blatent privacy breach,
whats happening is msid server is reading your cookie and passing it to the create_p1.asp page via a GET which then creates a new cookie with your old cookie values then finally redirects you to the story complete with transfered cookies contents, clever but not clever enough for those that spot it

of course all this cookie sharing happens in the blink of an eye so the average user doesnt see it (dont believe me look at the 302 redirect headers sent when you click the msnbc link) and has no idea they have actually visited msn.com in order to steal their msn cookie

That MSNBC article reminds me very much of the early days of micros... when nothing worked but nobody would admit it. An attitude that has, alas, to some extent been internalized into the whole PC industry.

In the late seventies, an acquaintance of mine used to rave about his Northstar system. I asked about reliability and he said it had been perfect, never any problems. I asked for a demo. He said he'd love to give me one but he couldn't right then, as the power supply had burned out. I said "I thought you said you hadn't had any problems." He said, "Oh, the problem is just in the power supply. The computer itself is fine."

The MSNBC article has that flavor to me. "As for the Microtel hardware, everything works as advertised except for the CD-ROM drive, which I haven't been able to get sound from yet." Right. It's not as if sound were an important function.

He says "I mentioned that Lindows was originally touted as being able to run Microsoft Windows programs. Guess what? IT CAN." (Capitals his). That's what he says first. It's only a little later that he mentions "[in Office the] Open New Document icon; ... doesn't work. Outlook almost works (it can't find my e-mail server at work) and Internet Explorer works sometimes. I haven't tried other Windows software titles, but I'm told some do work."

Yeah, right. It's not as if you'd ever want to create a NEW document, editing existing ones should be good enough for anyone. It's not as if it matters that the email program can't talk to your email server. And, yes, I'm so picky that I expect IE to work more often than "sometimes." I demand nothing less than "mostly," and you should, too.

Lindows... "IT CAN" run Windows software. And my friend's Northstar computer wasn't broken.

I just an article on MSNBC last night (here) that was an exerpt from William Shatner's book Star Trek: I'm Working on That: A Trek from Science Fiction to Science Fact, where he discusses all sorts of Star Trek technologies, notably warp engines and antimatter.

He discusses the "real science" and problems with space travel, etc., one of them being the difficulties in mass-producing antimatter (said to be the most efficient form of fuel). And then today, we read that CERN (maybe) mass-produced antimatter. Cool! One step closer? :)

The Recording Artists Coalition is an organization of about 140 mostly major label artists who protested unfair record contracts in the days before the Grammy Awards this year. Led by big names such as Don Henley and Sheryl Crow, the coalition sucessfully convinced Congress to repeal a 1998 amendment to the Copyright Act of 1978 (which Courtney Love eloquently criticized) that made musicians' recordings "work-for-hire," meaning that the copyright would remain with the record company forever instead of reverting back to the artist after 35 years.

The other issues they're campaigning about are the length of contracts and payola, among other things.

By the way, Salon writer Eric Boehlert should win the fucking Pulitzer Prize for writing about the sorry state of radio. He's writing great stuff, and as far as I can tell, he's the only paying any attention to it.

Huh? Did you actually read the referenced article? It explicitly talks about the potential dangers here to non-Microsoft systems.

Seems to me there are plenty of issues here that have the potential to affect Linux wireless access. We want to avoid a repeat of the winmodem situation, which in this case could be more severe because it affects access to networks, not just a local piece of hardware. The way to do that is to make sure information gets out early, along with awareness of the protocols, issues, and potential traps involved.

You describe yourself as "us on the Nix", but I have to wonder if you've ever touched anything other than Windows - otherwise, you might actually have some appreciation of the real-world problems of coexisting with Microsoft's perpetually broken stuff.

Not saying that the author is right (I hope not) but it is something to be aware of.
