Samscum? Really?...
Indeed.
One day, society will grow up a little and not resort to petty name calling to make a point.
Until then, we always have this comic to remind us of how little we have learned:

20 million kids are eaten every secondBy bats.
Nice think-of-the-kids scare piece, it'll play well with Tammy Teaparty. But couldn't he at least have worked in some sinister Ender's Game reference and asked how America's cyber-soldiery will fare on the battlefield against these little yellow freak-children? (Note: All Korea is North Korea to Tammy Teaparty).

Re:Dress Code
You said that you were wearing jeans and t-shirts, so we can assume that is within the cultural norm. I would suggest trading in the T-shirt for something with a collar on it. In order to maintain your geek-cred, you could check out the "First Party" line of shirts over at penny-arcade.
On the other hand, a tweed jacket and a bow-tie would work.

Re:Wow...
"You let your dad down" is not a threat.
No, but:
* It is a deliberate attempt to cause offence by bringing up a subject that the recipient is likely to be pretty sensitive about
* Threat of drowning is, and that was contained in another of the tweets, so he wasn't arrested just because of the "dad" tweet
In this case I'm not unhappy that the tweeter's freedom of speech has been trumped by the recipients freedom to not have to put up with that sort of shit from the petulant little prick, and I fail to see the logic of extending this to "when will they come after me?!?!?!?!?!?" (as some people are doing) unless of course you are also in the habit of sending offensive and threatening messages to people you don't even know.
What we have here is yet another instance of http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19/ - he thought he was safe pretending to be big and clever with his tweets until it became clear that people were going to fight back and that he was as risk of losing his anonymity so peple who know him in real life can see him for what he really is. The threat to Sky News says as much about his world view (i.e. the world should let him do what he wants with no consequences) that much else. -

Re:Congratulations.
Hell look at the posts after you and you'll LYAO, they've full on jumped from "MSFT will make Linux a felony ZOMFG!" right into "MSFT is gonna move the OS into the cloud and you'll get arrested if you don't pay your $699 license fee ZOMFG!" full on batshit.
Ya wanna know what the REALLY sad part is to me? Most of the normal folks like me that were using Linux in 05 and 06 have frankly moved away simply BECAUSE of all the batshit. Its like being a normal person around total weirdos, its just creepy. Hell I know every time I had a problem and went to the forums I always got works for me and Ur a M$ Ninja!
I don't know what happened because i swear it did NOT used to be like this. Guys used to actually care about problems and wanted Linux to get better, and would bitch when things were broken or got worse. Now i swear its like a damned religion, where ALL comments that aren't simply praise of "the one true god" causes the nutters to come down like flies on shit, and all the FOSS posts or articles, hell even articles that don't have a damned thing to do with FOSS, end up with nothing but conspiracy theories and pointless "just use Linux!" posts. No wonder so many look at FOSSies like this. Hell I'm starting to wonder if that isn't an accurate description myself.

Re:Some people just like to complain.
Or, from what I've been hearing (allow for a dump truck full of salt whenever "gloom and doom" meets "internet") it might go the other way, leaving those historic district types with a historic lack of access.
-
Re:If my work inbox is any indication...
Hell not only ain't it broke, I'd say its never been better. All the major webmails now have excellent spam filters, they all have AV scanning so one doesn't have to warn users about email attachments anymore, they work on just about any device, are fast with most email arriving across services in a few minutes...what is supposed to be busted?
The only thing I see "rising" is pointless bullshit quick posts like tweets which if those I've seen are any indication are about this level of sophistication so I don't see anything 'replacing" email, i just see other channels for bullshit that wouldn't be worth the time to even write an email over. hey if you just want to bullshit? I got no problem with that, I just see email as useful for things other than bullshitting which these "new things" seemed designed to do. Its like FB messaging, my GF gets stuff like who she knew in HS that broke their foot or had a kid, i get "Hey dude, what's a good heatsink?" in both cases not really worth an email for the quick BS that followed.

Re:Rights? Right.
Frankly the whole "cyber bullying" thing is bullshit, there has been trolls and douchebags on the net as long as there HAS been a net, see Gabe's theory which has been proven true time and time again. IRL bullying is violence and real threats of violence, whereas trolls are like monkeys at the zoo flinging poo, don't like it? don't stand next to the monkey cage. Nearly every site has ToS that lets the mods banhammer the real shitheads and most places have mods that have a VERY limited tolerance for douchebaggery.
The problem with cyber bullying bullshit is frankly you never know who is gonna be offended over what, hell look at the "PC Police" that get offended if you don't follow the little PC rules like hyphen-American and other horseshit. Look at this very site and how some get royally butthurt if you dare say anything negative about their software/religion of choice, be it FOSS or should I say GPL-FOSS or the Cult Of iSteve. Funny you don't see that near as much from the Softies, but then again how could you be offended when the CEO is a giant sweating howler monkey whose strategy is "I heart Apple lots!" and who honestly thought the public would like to squirt a shit brown brick sized media player? Of course the one group that is impossible to offend is the BSD guys, those poor lonely sods are just so damned happy that anybody remembered they existed they take everything as a compliment.
in the end I think free speech is worth a hell of a lot more than making sure every little Mary Milktoast out there don't get their little feelings hurt. The Internet is the biggest force of change we have ever seen in the history of mass communication, governments have literally fallen thanks to its ability to organize and spread speech, I just think we shouldn't risk destroying such a powerful engine of speech just to keep some people from getting butthurt.

A Few PossibilitiesI'm not sure if Kickstarter is a "bubble" that will burst. But, I do think there might be a risk of Kickstarter plateauing. I could see two major reasons why kickstarter might start to stumble in the future:
If there start to be more projects that fail. Projects can fail for a large variety of reasons - I work in the games industry, and I've seen a lot of college-age people try to get game projects started only to have them unravel because of conflicts within the group, or someone got too busy with school or their girlfriend or underestimated the amount of work required to create their ambitious project, etc.
The second major reason is that there might be an increase in fraud - people setting up projects that are designed purely to take people's money and disappear. Kickstarter says they don't police what people are doing with the money (which makes sense, since it'd take a lot of effort to do that). Take, for example, this fraudulent project which fortunately ended up getting outed before they reached their goal (which means they got no money in the end):"There was a fairly high profile hoax/scam thing on Kickstarter for “Mythic: The Story Of Gods And Men” that was swiftly pulverized by community sleuthing. As suggested previously, one is - in many cases - funding the “idea” of a game, ideas being a quantity in ready supply. If they had been less stupid, less obvious in their ruse, they could have taken in their eighty thousand dollars and then promptly evaporated. We may expect the next villain to utilize a more sophisticated approach."
http://penny-arcade.com/2012/05/04The "Mythic" game was *super* ambitious, but they only asked for $80,000. It was so ridiculous it just screamed "fraud", so I'm not surprised they got found-out. A more capable fraudster could do a lot better job about not putting up red-flags.

Re:And...
See this is why I love to LMAO at the FOSSies, they are so "There is but one true god!" they can't even think, its like a cross between village idiot and conspiracy nut, all rolled into one!
You want some fresh bitch slapping? Be careful what you wish for FOSSie, how about a nice kernel exploit? Or how about the guy that wrote EEEBuntu saying Ubuntu sucks which considering they are the current savior of Linux kinda tells you something. But why don't you say "Use Distro X" and then have the balls to name the X so i can show its just as big a POS, huh? BTW frankly everyone has stop giving a fuck about your OS, you aren't even newsworthy anymore really. Now its all Win 7&8, OSX&iOS, and of course Android which just shows what happens when a company bitch slaps the community and takes it away from them, why it actually fucking runs!
How sad that even with a bug spreading through OSX there are writers pointing out that's no reason to torture yourself with Linux , after all even a virus ridden OSX actually runs which is more than most distros LOL! But hey, you can always tell them they can fix it otherwise they don't need that right? LOL! And I noticed you just couldn't fricking resist screaming "Nigger!" which in FOSSie is done by screaming PaidMicrosoftShill, hey you think you could throw in one more FOSSie cliche please? Then I'll have a FOSSie Flush ROFL!
But if you didn't have cliches and your pathetic attempts at insults why then you might have to have an independent thought and realize what everybody knows that even when MSFT put out a universally reviled OS you STILL got curb stomped, does that give you ANY clues? or all they all brainwashed by those black choppers that have been following you? Hell when the Chinese were given the choice of your "free OS" or pirating Windows they chose the latter even if it meant staying on XP and using IE fricking 6, LOL! Does that ring ANY bells? A smart person would say "what are we doing wrong the other guy is doing right?" but a FOSSie who is just like a Moonie in that they blindly follow, instead says "Its all a conspiracy! They are all shills keeping the masses from true salvation!" and then you wonder why we all laugh at you because you DON'T Listen, you DON'T learn, and Torvalds could take a big steaming dump and hand it to you and you'd thank him for his generous gift. So enjoy that fresh bitchslapping loony, enjoy the fact that the world really doesn't care...but I do, I enjoy slapping you, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Re:Deja Vu
All one has to do is look at the before and after numbers friend, the data doesn't lie. Right up until GPL V3 the numbers were consistent, it was going up quarter by quarter, after GPL V3 the numbers were flat for the first quarter (as businesses looked it over) and then it has been a straight down curve ever since. look up the numbers yourself, it makes a pretty little bell curve.
But you see posts like yours, where yes you did get all butthurt EXACTLY as I predicted, is why I separate FOSS advocates from FOSSies. A FOSS advocate uses FOSS because it is the best tool for a particular job they have, FOSSies look upon it as a religion, FOSS advocates argue their position with the pros and cons, FOSSies see everything as a personal attack on their Deity. This phenomena isn't exactly a secret, it is why we have comics like this and this and actual syndromes like this one. If you would like to see an example of this syndrome BTW, please go to linux Insider and look up anything posted by pogson, its soo funny to watch a FOSSie as he keeps saying "That other OS" or M$ because he's sure that if he types the actual word then MSFT Ninjas will get him, hilarious!
So whether you like it or not frankly means nothing to me, I honestly don't care, i just love to LMAO at loons and lately FOSSies have been funny as hell. I mean can you even picture a Mac user typing "the OS from Redmond ooohhh" or a windows user typing "The kernel that must not be named' its just too damned funny the kind of batshit crazy that RMS attracts, hell its comedy gold!

Re:Gaming the system
Penny Arcade interviewed Gabe Newell awhile ago and they talked about this. From that article it sounds like they want to use player behavior metrics rather than some kind of reporting system. Like if people have a tendency to quit a group that includes you before it's finished, you may be an asshole. If you have a tendency to quit groups before they are finished, you may not be a valid indication of whether someone else is an asshole.

Re:What smell?
Oh, and the obligatory [penny-arcade.com].
WTF? No, this is the obligatory Penny Arcade cartoon. (Could it be any more appropriate to this story?!)
-
What smell?
The only "scent" I've noticed is paper and a faint bit of what I would assume is adhesive that finished drying during shipment. I assumed Apple tried to keep smells down, since I've inhaled far worse after opening other electronics packages (motherboards come to mind). I've never thought of any sort of characteristic "Mac smell"...though admittedly I don't hold my nose up to the packaging and inhale deeply. This is nothing but a gimmick IMHO.
Oh, and the obligatory.

Penny Arcade Interview
Penny Arcade recently had an interview with Gabe Newell where he talks a bit about Valve's interest in hardware development; worth a read:
-
Re:Yeah, good luck with that.
Really? You can't see any way somebody shouting, "I'm gonna kill myself, I'm gonna kill myself," while perched on a 10th floor ledge actually jumping to their death could be, in any way, related to a crowd of fuckwads on the ground laughing, pointing, and shouting, "Jump! Jump you faggot!"? The presence of a crowd of people who are not only not concerned, but are actively encouraging the person to kill themselves - and you don't think that might have a negative influence on their receptiveness to a counselor trying to talk them off the ledge? You see no way it could actually confirm the feelings that have led them to that situation in the first place?
I guess the GIFT has more supporting evidence.

Verblen Effect
Might be granny and auntie christmas purchase marketing. "the $60 game must be better than the $30 game... I'll buy junior the $30 game"
This is what is known as the Verblen effect [1]. Thing is, it doesn't just do to price it higher. The overall packaging needs to be better, and to look "richer" (curiously this likely leads to bullshot [2]). Playability (and replayability) are relegated to the bottom of the list, along with meaningful plot.
Funny thing, the verblen effect is likely altered by App Stores where there isn't any physical packaging, and lots of word-of-mouth. Of course, even in this genre, depth of game and complexity are diminished in order to give instant satisfaction to the buyer (note: the buyer is likely NOT purchasing for someone else - so again even digital packaging isn't nearly as important). In this space, reviews are king, and are already gamed.

Really Like It
I have enjoyed the videos so far and I think this is a great idea.
This will be added to the stuff I watch on PATV as well as Geek And Sundry. (Which has a slew of great shows - though I'm most stoked about Wil Wheaton's tabletop gaming show and The Guild.)
Here I'd love to see stuff that shows off what slashdot is about - tech (especially FOSS tech) at a deeper depth than the 'non-technical' folks are interested in. I enjoyed the HD tv bit - since I don't know jack about tvs. But it did feel awfully fluffy. A lot of people complain about slashvertisements - and I don't think every mention of a physical product or software that can be purchased is an abomination - but I do want to dig a little deeper than consumer level.
Being able to have user submitted video would be cool - though I have no idea how that would work. Based on what I see here in comments, I wouldn't dare go through a video firehose to look for stuff to recommend. So maybe that's just a non-starter unless there was a way to filter out the obviously horrific stuff that I anticipate would be submitted.

You know what that M$ shit makes you sound like? This guy that's what. you could post the most insightful exposition on the current state of MSFT in the software arena but 90%+ aren't even gonna see it because they see M$ and think "Douchenozzle fanboi" and walk right on past. There are plenty of abbreviations that are NOT from 1993, use MS, MSFT MSoft, whatever but the stupid M$ bit hasn't been applicable since DOS died in 1999. Eat some fruit, get some sun, quit acting like a douche, kay?
As for TFA duh! To use a
/. car analogy do you think Ford would want their employees using company funds to buy Chevys? hell no, its called supporting your company and eating your own dog food. What they do with their OWN money is nobody's business, what they do with company funds very much IS the business of the company.
