RE: BS for you during the game.
Something like this?

Re:Why this is a good thing
Plays games (hopefully, the Xbox will have better exclusive games than just Halo and Shenmue II).
The xbox has, of late, had pretty weak titles. Just around the corner, though, there are a number of interesting candidates: that Star Wars RPG by Bioware, Panzer Dragoon, and Psychonauts all have a bit of my attention. The guys at Penny Arcade just had a little discussion about the Xbox and it's lineup of games.
Plugs into a TV (which every American has), monitor (which most people can get for cheap).
Plugging a computer into a TV doesn't really intrigue me. It's got crappy resolution and is generally not set up properly for you to do any real work with. I have one a Shuttle Spacewalker hooked up to the TV in the living room, and it's only really good for playing divx's on a screen larger than the monitor.
Runs Linux for network admin types (imagine a few of these suckers in your business - $200 for a Staroffice/web browsing/java running machine).
I think that, for the most part, getting Linux running on the xbox is just a novelty. It's right up there with running Linux on PS2 or Linux on the Dreamcast. Cute, but really pretty useless. The other thing that concerns me is the quality of the hardware itself. Microsoft's taking a hit on each and every unit that they sell, so it makes sense that they'd try to reduce their loss by putting lower-end components into the case. I think that it's probably quite good to play games on, but I question its reliability for anything more intensive. Especially in a business. Then again, the price is about right to try it out, and if it doesn't work, it's not much of a loss. -
Re:Not to rant but..Penny Arcade is a good place to keep up with all things gaming. The site's updated three times a week, which each update being a news story (very well written) and a comic strip (very well drawn, and often as not damn funny).
It's not a traditional gaming magazine that covers everything new, rather they talk about which games interest them at the moment. I've a feeling that very few games of interest slip by them. The game "rez" that is mentioned in this thread as an example of a great original game is also a favorite of the PA guys.
As an example of their kind of humor, everyone on slashdot who spells Microsoft as Micro$oft should take a look at this penny-arcade comic and briefly consider if whether Gabe has a point!

When ?When will we see such things dispensing the latest computer hardware and accessories, maybe even a few hot video game titles?
Granted, where I live the machine owner would still need to place it somewhere with some security, as we have a problem with vandals, I saw a spraypainted BMW on Sunday, (What's up with tagging? The uncontested modus of announcing "I'm the least secure person on my block"?) this in a fairly expensive neighborhood (I think it's mostly rich kids who fsck things up, but that's a whole different can of worms) How secure are such monstrosities, which can't defend themselves, in Japan? Seems like Munich would be another place you could put something like this without coming back in 24 hours and finding it defaced and/or robbed.

Re:HmmmI tend to agree with the guys at Penny Arcade that Doom3 is great for a proof-of-concept, so to speak, but it's still just Doom. You can put all the detailing in the world on a '90 Civic, but that doesn't mean that driving it is going to be any more fun.
If you believe Gabe and Tycho from PA, and I do, the exciting thing about Doom3 is the possibilities its engine opens up for games that really push the envelope.
-
And for something completely different
In other gaming news, I think it's time to take the link to Old Man Murry off of the front page of Slashdot. Old Man Murry has been AOL for quite a while now and it's time to give up on them, at least until they actually get their site back up. Maybe the link could be replaced with Penny Arcade or something.

Re:OS X still feels beta, to me.I suppose that makes it the right way to do it, now doesn't it. It's just a matter of what you're used to - for a while, menu bars in every damn app window on a windows box annoyed the fuck out of me. Deal with it.
Oooo, lookie here! It's a Mac Troll coming out from under the bridge. Quick, where are the torches and acid? And I suppose you think that because Apple did it that way, it's correct? Or because this Fitts fellow says so? I don't think Fitts ever had to use a touchpad, or he might have scrapped his so-called "law".
Ah yes. Well, Apple doesn't want to make it easy for the average use to use the root account, because the average user will probably do something stupid with it and break things.
Oh, now I'm an average user! And a *whiny* average user, at that! Forget that I've got a B.S. in computer science and that I've been a full-time Linux and NT sysadmin for seven years. (That's seven years *after* graduation, not working helldesk or running boxes at home or any other creative ways you little prats lie on your resumes.) I'm average because I really didn't give enough of a damn to look up how to delete a pesky folder in OS X, because I was too busy getting shit done and generally enjoying myself on my Windoze and Linux boxen. Woe is me!
You realize, of course, that in one fell response, you've summed up why the entire world hates Mac users. You should be on their next commercial or something.*
* the tone of this response would have been considerably different, had luphus not sounded like a complete bastard.

I asked Richard Stallman this...In the Slashdot interview of Richard Stallman a while back, I asked this very question. His response was very simple and to the point.
Q: The battle over CSS has been about whether people have the right to use software (I consider DVDs software because they are programs read by a computer chip) when it is controlled by the content control system CSS, even after they've bought it. I hope they'll lose in the courts, but it is unclear at this point whether they will, however, my question is on another, related topic.
-- From Thus Spake StallmanSuppose very strong, nearly unbreakable encryption were used on traditional Software DVD (i.e. stuff like M$ software or other companies software, just in a DVD format) and a DVD CCA for software were set up saying, "You aren't allowed to access the content of any DVDs unless you use our licensed DVD decryption software. Oh, and our DVD decryption software contains a legally enforceable (under UCITA) software license which states that you cannot reverse engineer any content you have decrypted using our decryption software." How would Free Software handle it?
RMS:With laws like that, there would be no lawful way to solve the problem. The Digital Millenium Copyright Act comes close to what you imagine, and it may be enough to prohibit free software for this job. (I don't know for certain, and I think the answer is not known yet.) It may be necessary to develop this software in countries which do not have these laws.
Q:Does there now need to be a Free Hardware philosophy which states that "Hardware which exists tied to a proprietary software system must be replaced by Free Hardware standards" or something similar?
RMS: I agree--but it will be hard to get the movie companies to release movies for that hardware. Fundamentally, the only solution will be when enough of the public believes in freedom to change the laws that are the basis for denying our freedom.
It is actually kind of depressing that even though we were all so well aware of what was coming we are still here, right up against the wall with so little progress to show.
P.S. Yes, I am aware of how the "M$" makes me look
:-) the sad thing is I am a lot like that guy, except until I got my well paying IT job it was my parent's garage, not basement. -
Re:zerg
Doom III will be for the XBOX only, just like how HALO has turned out. just like before

Necrowombicon
If you're anywhere near the Vancouver, B.C. area, make sure to check out the Necrowombicon, as mentioned on Penny Arcade.
I won't be, because it's 3000 freaking miles away, but it looks like it could contain fun (in liberal dosages). -
Re:My favorite quote
"Thank you for warning me about palladium. When you spell Microsoft "M$" though, this is what I picture."
Sorry, couldn't resist. -
Damn skippy
Lowtax and Penny Arcade said it. Best. Fark 'um.

You're so witty man! God damn, I can't believe it! Put a dollar sign insted of an 'S' in 'MS' - priceless!
Fucking comical genius!
"Internal Exploder"
Internal Exploder?! HAHAHAHAH!
I don't think I've ever heard a better parody of the 'Internet Explorer' name since 'Internet Explorer'! LOLOLOLOLOL

Re:any possibility...I did a bit of research on this this morning. I found out about it from the Penny Arcade mention - the artist saw a friend of his with a working model, taking pictures and updating his blog with it. The friend worked for the company that developed it, and was none other than Ficus Kirkpatrick, one of the hackers behind the BeOS kernel. Anybody know where his blog might be found?

Re:I like this quote... [Y2KBugs Bunny]
When you have a monopoly, you can do whatever you want. Believe me, if RedHat Linux was installed on the vast majority of desktops I'm sure RH'd do precisely the same thing.
Microsoft isn't deceitful. They're very upfront about throwing money at people.
Corporate America isn't about compassion. It's about money. Ever heard the quote "Money makes the world go 'round"?
Did you think that if the Nix workstations had been able to talk to each other about 10-12 years ago, Microsoft would not exist as it does today?
See, this Open -$ource bashing of MS evokes this PA strip. -
A grave issue

Re:Hey MichaelYou get a big briefcase and fill it full of money
Seriously, it's not the're gonna give up the waiver, but you can certainly get guarantees and such. Also, consider insurance.

They do it for the bracelets, baby
Why does this just strike me as more techno-geek technophilia? "I'm going to have my body cryogenically frozen" has the same nerd chest pounding tone as talk of CPU clocks, net-enabled everything, and naming children after esoteric SF novels.
Of course that 133 Pentium doesn't seem so much like a Tiny God anymore, some kid keeps on h4x0ring the AC to 5 degrees C, and your neighbors hit the deck everytime they see Undómiel throw on his black trenchcoat. -
Webcomics I read
-
Two thoughts on thisFirst, I do commend Mr. Gallagher for trying (and perhaps successfully)making Megatokyo a profitable comic. Profit-making webcomics are VERY few and far between. The only other ones I can think of are (correct me if I'm wrong): Penny Arcade
PVP
and possibly 8-bit Theatre
Numerous comics have print versions out, though. Aside from PVP and Penny Arcade above, GPF and I think Diesel Sweeties both have offline versions. So I ought congratulate Megatokyo.Secondly, I thought I could add to the list of worthwhile webcomics to read:
Penny Arcade (above)
Res Life
Mac Hall
Angst Technology
Zeek V2.0
I'll avoid the urge to shamelessly promote my own new comic :) -
this is frontpage /. news?
Ok, does Megatokyo have that large of a following here @
/. ??
Because amongst other webcomics:
Goats Is currently at Comicon putting out a second book.
Achewood is finishing up the polishing touches on a book.
Cat and Girl has a book going out.
As do a whole slew of others. Why don't they get mentioned?? -
Re:Windows has a place
Here, this comic may help...

Re:Not at a local arcade near you
Some of arcade games are becoming physically exhausting to play. Police 911 from Konami leaves my legs sore from all the squats you have to do to avoid getting shot.
I think this comic sums up the arcade experience pretty well.

Re:The rights of the many (us) vs the greedy.
The Web has the potential to make a meaningful buzz but search engines don't friggin cut it. The web will have to be ORGANIZED, INDEXED and cross-referenced the same way that libraries have been since the Great Library of Alexandria. The days of "Cowboy Content Creation" are over. Creatrion of web content will have to be via XML with precise industry standard DTDs. Otherwise you just get lost in the noise.
That all depends on what you're trying to generate buzz for. If you're one of those same Big Media corporations trying harness the Internet to generate artificial buzz, then you're right.
However, if you're an independent creator who just throws his stuff out there for everyone to enjoy, with no obsessions about profit margins or ROI, then you're wrong. The buzz will happen all on it's own.
A perfect example is Sluggy Freelance. It does almost no appreciable advertising -- and certainly less than MegaTokyo or Penny Arcade -- yet it is arguably one of the most popular and longest running comics on the Web.
How did it happen? Strictly word of mouth.
I think the corporate-driven hyperconsumerism of the last few decades has perverted our fundamental notions of just how the free market is supposed to work. The Internet is simply restoring the universality and equality that we used to enjoy in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries, when anyone could buy an old printing press and call themselves a newspaper.
However, the trade-off is that we're now facing some devastating economic contraction. The dot.com bust, the slump in the media and advertising industries, the current financial scandals... they're all just symptoms of a larger problem: as the artificiality of hyperconsumerism is increasingly exposed and rejected, many modern corporations are discovering that they have no real reason to exist. They don't fulfill any real human needs. Their only products are novelty and convenience. Without a captive and ignorant audience, they're doomed.

Old news
.. In case you didnt read it, the date on the article says 'Friday March 15, 2002'
.. And as someone else mentioned, penny arcade is doing a comic today about the report of someone getting in queue for Turok 50 days in advance.. read it here ..
I also think i saw this news-thingy here on slashdot earlier (about the gravestones). -
Penny Arcade already has commentary...
http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3
And, as mentioned in their news for the comic, this itself is old news. They've since taken up the cause of promoting a Irish lad who has been waiting in line for Turok 2. Why? Only the boy himself could know, apparantly. :^)
