Re:Thats all great but...
Overclock all you want and you are still playing the same game as everyone else.
Rendering power is overrated when talking about game graphics. If you look at World of Warcraft, the game looks incredible. But it looks incredible on lower-end systems too... the art direction is just spot on across the board. Half-Life 2 uses some neat graphical tricks, but in general the game looks amazing because the artists had a clear vision of what they were creating and ensured that every pixel that went on the screen supports that. Look at the detail in the tree leaves... they're not super high-poly, they're just beautiful.
If your graphics card is good enough to run all of today's games, your graphics card is good enough. There really is no reason to spend 300 dollars every two years when spending 80 every two would be sufficient. If you want better looking games, look to lead artists, not to GPU engineers. -

... same arguments, all the time. That's why the criminality in the States is beyond any civilized place in the world ... 'cause guns don't kill people!
All these things are to be self-controlled - I would agree - but this would require decency, a level of intelligence beyond the average redneck anti-Iraq warrior, and a culture of more than a few years behind. If not - you get pictures like this linked all over photobucket, myspace, etc., and get the kids formed just right to go to war with the whole world, straight out of grade school ... -
Re:WOW! That's a lot of SPAM!Well, I don't take those "normal precautions" I always took before I had a spam filter.
- I don't obfuscate my email address anywhere. Not on Slashdot, not on Usenet, not on web pages.
- I don't create fake emails for miscellaneous "free" services. I just provide my GMail address.
That's all it takes, I guess. In the last 12 hours, I received 32 spam emails.
Here's a screenshot. Between my original post and this one, my spam count dropped by two. (Irony of ironies, the RSS entry at the top of the screen links to a recipe of Ginger Spam Salad. So all you're missing are the ingredients.) -

These are hand-picked images from a quick google images search. Hopefully that balances both ways. I'll let you all be the judge of the aesthetic quality of EQ2.
You'll also note that the imagery has gotten much more stylized as the series has progressed into the desert of flames expansion. I suspect this has been a touchy subject within Sony, which is why they had the strong reaction they did to the criticism. -
New Game Journalism at its best..
I don't know what I had in mind, walking in there. I thought I'd see some new games, I guess. And I did. Unfortunately, they were all in Chinese. Sony and Microsoft tried to make a showing. That didn't work. Local companies, Chinese companies, Korean companies, and this guy all stole their thunder.
Why?
And he got kicked out, and just walked back in. Funny stuff. -

Religion is the most useful mechanism for dividing people into groups and using this division for whatever political reasons, for example to justify wars.
My own cartoon depicting Muhammed as an Evil Genie, who came out of the Jag of Ignorance and is lighting up a bomb, that is the entire planet, with a match, that came out of a matchbox with the Iranian flag drawn on it. Sorry for the quality of the drawing, it was done in quite a short period of time with a touchpad.
My own cartoon depicting Auschwitz concentration camp, where my grandfather spent 2 years of his life (and survived,) and a lineup of people to be burnt in the crematorium while still alive, and a Nazi, who stops the next in line (who is supposedely my grandfather) and says: Sorry folks, vee ar klozed for zee day, vee ar aut of zee wooden for burning.
I also have made a couple of drawings on the Muhammed theme, that could be interpreted more insulting, with Muhammed screwing a goat and a goat screwing Muhammed, but I don't think you would be interested. -

Re:If they weren't farmers, they'd be on their own
The motivation to group with English-speaking players should be enough evidence that one is not a gold farmer. They are called GOLD farmers for a reason. They sell gold, and the most effective way to get gold is by farming solo, especially when compared to a P.U.G. In a group, people's objectives usually are to get quests done, or to do instance runs for items. Compared to the gold farmers' usual killing mob's non-stop in Tyr's Hand, being in a group would be a complete waste of time for them. And on the point of it costing less and better speed and native language, you only got 1/3 right. Sure, it's somewhat cheaper (if you don't play too much every month since you pay by minute in Chinese WoW), but better speed? You have no idea what kind of lag you'll get at peak hour on a server with medium-level population (Chinese medium, not North American medium). At least two people I know has come to play on North American servers because of this lag. And you say native language like it's a good thing. I personally consider that they did a pretty good job translating WoW into Chinese, since it's a lot better than most MMO's which look like they're translated in less than two weeks by a single person suffering from multiple personality disorder paid by minimum wage with only third-grade English education. However, there are still a lot of really annoying errors/quirks. For example, "Private's Tarbard" is translated as "Pirate's Tarbard". Admittedly, I'm probably a little too picky, but I most definitely won't be the only one to choose playing on an English-speaking server just so I can get the original experience. P.S. Just to give you an idea of what kind of population you are looking at on a Chinese server, here's a screenshot. (Taken on a medium-sized server called Anvilmarr when they were doing the Anachronos memory event)

Real estate
The real difference in resolution is noticeable when you have a really large screen area.
And if you don't own a lot of real estate, you don't have any place to put a really large screen area. Remember that real estate is at least an order of magnitude more expensive than electronic toys, especially in Japan. Analysts have conjectured that the Xbox would have sold a lot more units in Japan if it were this big.

So you look at a 7-day period and claim the sales are better? I'm sure we can find an arbitrary 7-day period where the PSP sold more, too.
It's certainly possible but not likely. More info on Japanese sales.

Re:gabbo Gabbo GABBO!
It's difficult to say which is doing better without up to date sales figures. However it has been shown that the DS has been consistently outperforming the PSP in Japan and generally in the U.K. and France.
I'm not sure about figures in the U.S. but PSP may have a lead. It would be great if we could have total sales figures instead of units shipped from Nintendo and Sony.

More Lies - More BS
John Smedley: There are long threads that I've started myself on our forums...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v464/Jhazmin/SWG
/smedlylies.jpg/ You disgust me, Smedly. You are no Star Wars fan. ("Jedis." "What is a pikeman, and why is it in SWG?") Have you EVER watched the movies?
You don't know what players want. I do not know a single player that ever said "i think there are too many confusing professions." I defy you to EVER find such an example. These changes have little to do with the what the player wants. They are because you didn't make the TIME to work on the bugs in the game, because you neglected to build on a foundation that you were not worthy of. Because the devs and programmers didn't think things through, glaring bugs and huge windows for griefing were allowed into the live servers time and again. You did not listen to your beta testers. Not in beta, not at the cu, and certainly not at the nge.
How is 9 professions more "unique" than 34 various ones we could mix and match to suit our styles and whims? There is nothing mroe unique in this system. This game, when it debuted in 2003, was a beautiful wonderful innovative thing. The fact that it has decomposed into it's current state rests solely on the shoulders of soe/la. We as a playerbase would have done ANYTHING to help this game succeed. It is Star Wars, man. It is EPIC. How can you fail at making a successful Star Wars game!?
The amount of content you could have made with the resources available (comics, movies, eu, novels, mini movies) is mind boggling. This game had so much potential. It was so exciting and wonderful and new. You squandered it all. This game is now a mockery of it's once innovative and expansive self. You should be ashamed.
How dare you say that this new nge is how the game should have been, Smedly. How do you have the NERVE to come here and blatantly lie. I have supported three accounts in SWG. I have been a loyal customer, I have loved it so so much. I have devoted countless hours and hundreds of dollars to this game, because it was different - because it was Star Wars - because I always had the hope it would be better. But it never got better. It just kept getting worse. This is, to me, a tragedy. How you can say these things with a straight face, is beyond me - oh wait it, isn't. I guess you will be getting more money this way, at least in the short term. But if you think the console gamers will support 3 accounts for 2+ years like I and other vets have, you are sadly mistaken. It is too bad that I am not ICONIC enough for you. And hey, whatever happened to "Experience the greatest Star Wars Saga ever told: YOUR OWN!
This new nge is so bug ridden and unattractive, it is shocking to me that you could label it as ready for live. By the devs own admission, the quests past lvl 30 are not completed. The UI is not completed. The art for several screens is not completed. How can you release this mess to your paying customers?
- The targeting system: it is SO fundamentally flawed I cannot even begine to wrap my mind around it. Who ever thought that it was a good idea for you to target every single thing you moused over was insane. For pvp, all you need to do is toss in a bunch of coverts and hey, no one can fight. The targeting makes the nalargon and omnibox nearly unplayable (but hey i guess you dont care about those pesky entertainers.) It is immediately obvious to me how this system can be exploited and used as a tool for grieving, and just plain annoying in day to day actions.
- The movement. Uhm yeah - I'm not here to play an fps. I don't use fps style of movement in my gaming. There has always been the option to have whatever ui style you wanted and 6 or so different default maps to chose from. That was wonderful. a customizable UI and control system is friendly and comfortable. T -
Bad move by Apple...
I think the piracy community is going to make apple look a little like this...
