Re:At this rate
You're basically right for what they have out in the US (that I know of). The thing is there are some really really nice Android tablets available here in Japan. The Galapagos tablet by Sharp is gorgeous and also has a smart phone version with a 3D display (no glasses required): http://www.sharp.co.jp/mediatablet/product/home/index.html . I think it's going to be released in the US, but I'm not sure. As for actual performance I've tried out both the iPad and the Galapagos and I personally found the Galapagos much more appealing.
Well, according to Google translate:
Enjoy the magazine spread, "10.8-inch wide screen"
Images can be clearly legible letters show ,
"High-definition HD LCD (1,366 × 800) " with
microSDHC Memory Card (sample): 8GB × 1 included
Nice screen resolution, not entirely sure what the 'magazine spread' is about, cost is about $665 USD. Doesn't say much else. -

Re:Huh?
Wow, so many
/.ers going off on something they have no experience with...Sharp sells their computers in Japan, so most of you might not know this, but they sold(and maybe still sell until stocks run out) an Ubuntu-based ultraportable called the Netwalker. One has a touchscreen, the other has an optical trackpad-type thing and keyboard.
As far as I could tell when I saw it, it was a stock Ubuntu Japanese install, with no proprietary crap saddled on top of it. They even kept the Ubuntu logo instead of slapping their own on it.
http://www.sharp.co.jp/netwalker/
I'd say that's pretty far from proprietary.
Of course, all of their 'regular' notebooks and PCs ran Windows.
-
Re:Give me ARM, please
That's not necessarily true. Sharp's Netwalker is based on the Freescale i.MX51 which is ARM Cortex-A8 and Ubuntu.
It even has Flash(Lite).
Linux isn't tied to x86.

Re:Hard to find Linux Netbooks in Japan
I have seen the Netwalker from Sharp at every major electronics store that I have gone to in Tokyo recently (http://www.sharp.co.jp/netwalker/). It exclusively runs Ubuntu and is one of the smallest and cheapest netbooks you can get in a store.
Then there is always the Dell website. You can get even cheaper mini 10s from there. I have purchased 2 such machines for friends and family as return gifts (Okaeshi). Doubt either know they are running Linux, but they are plenty happy to have a convenient webbrowsing/Skyping machine.
I would say there is quite a bit of activity recently in this space in Japan, if you know where to look. -
What about the new "Zaurus" from sharp
The PC-Z1 is ARM based, uses one of the best system architectures around (waaay better than say OMAP), runs Ubuntu Netbook Remix in full, and will be available by the end of the month here in Japan. I don't believe I've seen a post about it on Slashdot, but a post about Hon Hai? I've never even heard of them.

Re:Interesting SpecimenSony's notebook was a statement product. It wasn't very practical, but they did it anyway, which is why it is noteworthy. it is no thinner than the MacBook Air It is
.39 inches thick!!! Look at the diagram. Only the hinge is thick. The entire notebook is about half the thickness of the MacBook Air. It's about half the weight, and it must be half in volume as well. Excalty, it is ridiculous.
With that said, at the time, I got myself a Muramasa, which was Sharp's thin notebook. It had a 12" screen, full keyboard, a touchpad, and even a cradle that would charge it and transform it into an external hdd. I paid about 900 dollars. This first came out in 2001. Again, it is thinner than Air except for around the battery.
http://www.sharp.co.jp/products/pcmt1c/
What a beauty. I chose Sony in my original post because it was more interesting.
I am sure Air is a great notebook. The problem I have is with those who believe Apple is always the first to break new ground or innovate. That is just what Apple wants you to believe.
There is a good reason why the iPhone isn't out in Japan. Phone's there have been "that good" for a long time now. Also their reaction to Air was more like "finally, sigh".
Not to say it is a bad notebook... I have no idea. -
Re:Why this is probably wrong
I heard (from a Korean) it was released in Korea before iPod (was released there?)...
(Note, the Techeblog site fracks with my Mozilla Firefox browser in that it DELAYS my getting off their page and back into my Slashdot tab... I suspect some fracked up ad code, cookies/java/other code interrupting my keyboard and mouse...)

Now, on the techeblog site, someone remarked that the phone was not touchscreen capable.... Their comments were in February.
The MacNN site has commentary that it is touchscreen.
The NewsFactor site article is also in Feb 07. See "Features Galore" section.
But, as for regular phones, check out things that kick the pants off US-market phones (tho I realize most of the cell phones here ARE from Japan or Korea):

I used to have a Vodafone phone that had a multicolor strobe emitting from the camera flash. It was independently activated.
http://www.sharp.co.jp/products/v402sh/
When I lost it I wanted to DIE. -
Re:Not all that's secret
I'll get to the iPhone toward the bottom of this...
Check out the Sharp-built Vodafone V402-SH, which is now obsolete. I bought one for ONE YEN back in Dec 2004. Hell, when I bought it, the salesman at Yodabashi said it was "obsolete". I laughed, because the US STILL has not seen such a phone. I showed it to phone shops in San Jose, and they where stunned, one even exclaiming "THAT technology is not even on our product map for 3 or 4 years from now!"
http://www.sharp.co.jp/products/v402sh/index.html
Other models sold by the former Vodafone ae now sold by Softbank, which recently completed acquisition of Vodafone. Partly, why we will NEVER get such phones in the US is the overseas feeling towards the US: "They wouldn't appreciate it. And -- they don't DESERVE IT"....prevails. But, I dare say it is just a US disease on the part of the carriers to give us what we would like, and at reasonable prices. Ever since I saw what Japanese, Koreans, and other Asians carried around in Tokyo, I have since felt nothing but pure, unadulterated, firery CONTEMPT for US cell carriers. Even Europeans have better models than most of what we could legally obtain and activate here in the US. So much for "U.S. technological superiority"....
Anyway, the V402SH phone has an analog TV, among other features.
I lost it in Oct 2004. I wanted to DIE. I'd give my left pinkie finger to have my very same phone and the data card back.
Some of the models double as game console controllers. The product feature list in dense type in the stores is MIND BOGGLING. But, then many 'Merkuns probably would not be able to cope with the sheer feature-rich phones.
As for the iPhone....
If the iPhone comes down in price, and if I can have a steady income again, and if they make one with a clamshell to protect the screen, I'd love to have one. -
Re:Straight outta the 90's
I don't know. Samsung's looks like a rip off of Sharp's Mebius

My phone
My phone (in Japan, though) can record directly to an SD card. A 256MB card gets me ~80 minutes of 320x240 pixel MPEG-4 video (Sharp V601SH). The video bitrate is about 440kbps.
However, the downsides are:
- Battery life. Recording and encoding video (and showing it on the screen) sucks a lot of power.
- Lens quality / resolution. Although it has an auto-focus lens, a person 10-20m away comes out as an unrecognisable blob about 10 pixels tall.
- Light balance. The camera software has trouble compensating for an overexposed target (at the centre of the image). If I want to take decent home videos, I'll go out and buy a camcorder. That can't beat the convenience of a phone and camera the size of my palm.
-
Re:Only useful if...
I'm studying in Japan this semester, and I've seen tons of phones here far more advanced than those in America. To address your concern, though I don't know about the Samsung camera in particular, alot of the phones here with 1-2 megapixel cameras have flash RAM sockets for storing/retrieving pictures. I would imagine such would be the case for this new camera as well.
And in response to the "it should be imported any time now" comment, I would have to say that's highly unlikely. The phones here that have features we in America wouldn't even dream of. Everyone here has 1-2 mpixel cameras, and some phones even have videophone capabilities; Hell, this one even has a TV/FM tuner built in! I actually held it in my hand, and watched TV on a cell phone. In-freaking-credible. But seeing those kinda phones all over the place here, and nowhere in America, I'd have to say the creation-to-import lag is quite high.

Re:Concidentally the Sharp Mebius PC-RD3D...
Also, back when I bought my Actius 150, the Japanese lineup was called "Möbius" -- had the one-sided loop as the wallpaper and everything. Can we assume that "Mebius" is a translation error?
Googling for "sharp mebius" got about 35,200 results, while "sharp mobius" got only 15 results, and "sharp möbius" didn't get any. Maybe it was a trademark dispute and they changed the name to get by it. The actual name they would be using for the Japanese market would be in Japanese, anyway. Perhaps the Japanese name actually means "Möbius" and they intentionally mistranslate it into "Mebius" to avoid trademark disputes. And maybe that's why they renamed it for the US market as well.
Aha! I just found out something- this is the homepage of the Mebius. When you translate the Japanese webpage title in Sherlock (Mac OS X) from Japanese to English, the result is "Mobius: Sharp". They do intentionally mistranslate it!

Server 1 Server 2 Server 3-Hashing it out.
URL Hashing would fix that problem.

Re:Poor move..
16 bloody pounds!!!! I think I'd rather stick with one of these at 910 grams (2lb). Sure it's not as fast, but It has 802.11 included and a battery life in the region of 8 hours. plus I won't get a hernia trying to lift it.
-
Re:Ocr?
my phone, an SH-505i made by Sharp, does do limited OCR for English characters. It can do a single line of text, and you can specify whether you are scanning a URL (which you can then browse to after scanning), a phone number (which you can then dial or store after scanning), an email address (which you can store or send mail to), or just English text. This feature hasn't proven to be very useful other than the novelty value of it. I'm sure there are other models which do even more, since I bought this one last summer.

Here's the press release on Sharp Japan's site.
Main features:
1) Built-in J-E/E-J translation software
2) CF and SD memory cards in the Zaurus can be accessed directly from a PC just by linking the PC and Zaurus with a USB cable.
3) Can use the AirH", FreeD, bitWarp PDA and Yahoo BB wireless services. -
Sharp has also got a mobile phone with 3D(In Japan that is)
There is an interview about the latest 3D phone here: page(EN)
Also check out this page, which has a drawing explaining how this works: page(JP) (I guess - it is in Japanese
:)As Sharp also has the Zaurus I'm waiting for a mobile phone with a 3D screen, running linux, and with a full keyboard - perhaps something similar to the C-760, only narrower. Oh, and dual 2mp cameras for taking 3D pictures.. (Sharp already has a 2mp mobile, so why not two of them.)
It might not fly in the US (lots of features = expensive), but I bet it would sell in Europe.. My mobile (a nokia 9210) is still retailing for 1000$ + without a subscription here.

Maybe not...This new 3D display differs from traditional 3D devices in two important ways:
(1) This display does not require special googles, which is a good thing because they can be very cumbersome.
(2) With this device, the 2D and 3D modes can be toggled electronically, as mentioned in the original press release. 3D images do put strain on your eyes, but if you don't like that, you can always go back to the traditional 2D mode.
As a side note, we usually do not share the screen of a laptop computer, so the last problem you mentioned is not a big issue in this case.
I, for one, am very excited by this news, being a big fan of 3D movies. I cannot wait until the prices of these displays go down and I can actually get my hands on one of them....
-
Re:Proprietary 3D format?
Strange. They're trying to get a locked-in niche market for their hardware, I guess.
Too bad, since they're using an nvidia chip and nvidia has a stereoscopic display package already. -
Details
If you can read Japanese, here's Sharp's explanation of how it works.
If you can't, look at the pretty diagrams and the stupid faked 3D photo. -
Re:Forget Nokia, give me DIGA!!!!
It doesn't review as well as the Sharp, though the support for DVD-RAM is nice. Note, the Japanese-spec players tend to automatically delete stuff after 31 days to comply with Japanese copyright laws. But yes, any of these products make the Nokia distinctly an also-ran.
-
Re:embarrassing questionI'd personally steer him towards a Sharp Zarius, or even one of the latest Japanese models shipped across
They support Compact Flash Type1 Cards which means you can swap in a Modem, GPS,Barcode scanner or anything else available.
Cos you just know your Boss is going to NEED a Barcode scanner, well, just as soon as he thinks of it...
PS. I just used google to find the example CF Cards so I recommend looking about for the best buy. -
Sharp, Panasonic
Sharp Mebius Muramasa It is smaller and lighter than Apple's brick. It runs on Transmeta so you can get geek points too.
Panasonic Let's Note Again, smaller and lighter than Apple's iBrick.
It continues to amaze me that people look at the iBook as some kind of zenith of hardware design when it is bigger, heavier, and has only one mouse button compared to the Windows-based alternatives. I guess if you are comparing the Apple to an IBM or Dell laptop you'd have a point but with all sorts of more stylishly designed laptops than those available you'd be hard pressed to claim that Apple is leading in the field. -
Re:Laptop screen resolution (Zaurus C7x0 Series)
Well the new series of Sharp Zaurus C700/C750/C760 have a 640x480 3.7" Screen, that's 144dpi. The screen is amazing.
Using the same resolution (144dpi) but on a 17" slab, would give you a resolution of about 2920x2200 (Microscope is not included). -
2 things to consider
The first has already been brought up. Basically, whatever crappy laptop you buy her in the U.S. is going to be completely too large and too heavy compared to the laptops she can find in Japan. Take the Panasonic Let's Note Light or the Sharp Mebius Muramasa as examples of laptops that are at the pinnacle of portable, not to mention that they already support Japanese out of the box.
The second thing to consider is that this is *your girlfriend*. It's not your wife, it's not your sister or your mom. It's someone with whom you do not have a determined future with. Are you prepared to give away $1,500 bucks and have it disappear forever if she decides that she likes Fuji Nakamichi more than you? Some advice (that's why you're posting here, right?) - give her a big kiss and some flowers. -
Or better...
Wait for the great SLC-700.
I know a guy who has one and it kicks ass ! -
no screenshots of the 3D!
To see images or run programs in 3D on these screens, users won't need special glasses or additional software. Sharp already sells a cell phone with a 3D screen for the NTT DoCoMo network in Japan and is showing off a 3D notebook at conferences and press events that can run a 3D version of the game Quake.
nice to see these will be autostereoscopic displays. I was looking for a bit more information about the notebook, but I can't find much. There is some information in Japanese about the phones, though, as well as a few comments from this page.
...Three-dimensional monitors consist of two TFT panels separated by a parallax barrier. Each eye receives a slightly different image, which creates the illusion of depth....While objects in the background do not pose problems, viewing objects in the foreground can cause the eyes to shift back and forth rapidly.
This sounds like more advanced technology than the previous 3D displays occasionally discussed here, where the LCD panels were seperated by a larger space and there was less of a reliance on optics for a more limited 3D effect. I would imagine this will still have some negative side effects in terms of viewing angle though, can anyone comment on that?

Sharp bringing to US 2003q1, lots more story linksAccording to this story in PC World, Sharp plans to show it at the January Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and bring it to the U.S. for sale in Q1 of 2003.
Here are some other useful SL-C700 links I've found in the last week or so:
MobileNews article with LOTSA pix (in Japanese, but the pix are easy to see).
Here is a mobigeeks blurb (with several off-links to other interesting places, also a forum).
About a quarter of the way down this page, there are some good closeup pix.
Here is an nvmax.com article, describing Dynamism's efforts, and several other off-links.
Here is Sharp's own page, also in Japanese, but has a couple of decent pix.
Here's a German article, with a good description of the specs.

Battery life, add-ons, etc.
According to the press release from the Japan official site, the battery last 18 hours with Backlight turned off and a static screen.
Another interesting add-on is a Compact Flash XGA adaptor from I.O.Data for video output, now all we need is some nice games.
Oh, there is also the camera CE-AG06 (640x480 color)
Other interesting parameters:
w x d x h: 74mm x 138mm x 18mm (w/o LCD cover)
weight: 205g (w/o LCD cover)
display: 240x320 3.5" 64k color TFT (Front light) (i.e. you can read clearly under direct sun light)No Bluetooth? Look up Bluetooth support from their developer site.

Re:My personal Transmeta anecdote.
Panasonic Let's Note Light only advertises 5 hours.
:-(
It's the cutest of the bunch.
In any case, if I were interested in getting a laptop these days, I'd lean towards the Sharp Mebius Muramasa. 9.5 hours advertised there. -
Re:Not the ultimate player.
[Re portable Mpeg4 players] Do you know of any that are coming?
Yes. -
The SHARP press release
is here. It has much more interesting content, including some specifications, the fact that they have filed 330 related patent applications, some info about the process of making the displays and finally some images
:) Now someone who wants to ride around and avoid breaking any of the 330 patents will have to be very careful. Infact, some might think that Sharp is actually slowing down the development with this invention and making it harder for others to enter the market. -
Picture of the product...
I can't read japanese, but I believe this is a picture of what the article talks about.

The Japanese version has everything and the kitchen sink. Let's hope they have at least half the functionality in the US Linux version.
Check out the main page (Japanese)
Here's a page with the wireless modem and camera
And mpeg4 video playback (with add-on encoder is very cool too)!
