akedia reviews awful links for first post
Regular readers of SomethingAwful will recognize these links below. I think it's fucking hilarious when the Awful Link of the Day is some poor schmucks' Xanga journal. I will seriously pee myself with laughter as the Goons troll the FUCK out of some depressed teenage AOL users' "deep thoughts". Here are two recent examples:
http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=LiL_AngeL_cUti E [WARNING: JavaScript Hell!] - This journal belonged to some Asian teenage chick who thinks it is cool to TYpE iN AlTERnAtING CAps aNd tO MIzspEEl wERdz. Also let's not forget the embededd background MIDI file (now defunct), the JavaScript to scroll the titlebar, the falling stars and, of course, the images on the front page linking back to the users' local disk drive (which have since been removed). Apparantly it took LiL_AngeL_cUtiE a few days to update her journal, and when she came back there were several hundred nasty comments from SomethingAwful followers waiting in her guestbook, not to mention the ChatterBox on the sidebar (now gone) that was abused to Hell. She folded, deleted the comments, and eventually just wiped the site. Hats off to the Goon Squad for effacing this poor user from the Internet.
http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=xpunkxjapxgurl x [WARNING: HTML color abomination!] - More recently featured as an ALoD, the diary of xpunkxjapxgurlx (who seems to be neither Japaneese nor very punk) details the sordid life of a teenage goth who's hobbies include crying, whining, bad psudeo-gothic poetry, lame personality quizzes, and inserting the letter 'x' randomly in words. Once again the Goons arrived in droves to remind this poor Xanga reader of their failure as a human being. But this time the user had the cojones to leave the comments intact (in true "I'm-depressed-and-I-don't-care" goth fashion), but not before posting a response in typical purple 48-point style about how the nation, as a whole, sucks donkey dicks. I personally wouldn't be wholly surprised if xpunkxjapxgurlx took the advice that SomethingAwful's readers left in the guestbook and slit her wrists in the tub. Hey, what's a teen goth gonna do?
That's all for today's SomethingAwful ALoD reviews. If you have any more sites that need a followup, post a link below. -
Re:As much as I like GTA...
I can envision some wacky japanese game where you get to play a sexual predator. The goal of the game is to prey on women and neighbourhood children. Getting extra points for doing things like luring kids with candy or the promise of toys, and performing date rapes on unsuspecting college girls.
Dunno about children, but I'm pretty sure there is a Japanese game where you play a stalker/rapist and have to use stealth techniques to sneak up on your victims. I thought I saw a walkthrough of it at somethingawful.com several months ago but I can't find it now.
In the meantime, Battle Raper is probably sufficient to prove such things exist.

Re:Somethingawful? I think it was a joke."I know, but it's damn hard to tell. Maybe I was fooled. If anyone has more information, tell me."
Here's the donation thread from the forums. Based on what I've seen in the SA forums, I'm fairly confident that it's on the level. SA is usually more "over the top" with their hoaxes, and accepting donations like this for a hoax would have a decent chance of getting them in trouble for fraud.

Re:explanation insideThere is nothing to get, and that's part of the reason the meme spread so well: IT'S RETARDED.
Less so than 'All Your Bases'. It didn't start with the song, it started with an ICQ prank that can be found here
Rich 'Lowtax' Kyanka, owner/founder/writer at Something Awful randomly ICQed some kid and convinced him that he was creating robots, which had gone wrong and shoved his Grandma down the stairs, ending with the robots apparently pushing Lowtax down the stairs and taking over the computer. It's funnier when you read the transcript, but the whole thing kind of went on from there.

Re:Well...I remember a game a friend of mine had for his SNES, which sat somewhere between Wolf3d and Doom in its 2.5D quality... You played Noah, and you had to go around shooting your animals and some evil demons who were trying to prevent you from rounding up your animals. Of course, it wasn't real shooting; you were using a slingshot and you shot out pellets of food with a bit of tranq in them.
That would be Super 3D Noah's Ark.

Re:Groklaw?
Groklaw is being generously hosted by ibiblio... that being said, it'd be nice if
/. did something to help out with how they crush people's bandwidth, but in fact they don't want to take responsibility for anything of the sort... which is why some websites who *do* have to worry about paying for bandwidth have redirected incoming visitors from /. in the past... -
This bothers me a bit.On the one hand, obviously spam is a problem to some people and the effort to reduce or eliminate many kinds of it should be applauded.
However, this provides more interference with the operation of the Internet while offering very little in the way of actual benefit. Already some people have experienced problems with overzealous realtime blackhole lists, others (me) have problems with ISPs implementing incoming filters without letting anybody know, silently dropping legitimate mail along with the illegitimate. And legal solutions rarely are -- it's just a matter of time before a loophole is found in this one (besides the obvious: since the empire has waned in recent years only the U.K. really trembles at U.K. law). Additionally, this may impede legitimate unsolicited commercial e-mail as well as that of the "Free Vitamins 7538" variety.
At the end of the day, we've really yet to mount a good defense to spam. And I still don't think laws are the way to do it.

Oh no!
Coincidentally, I just rented a couple of the Space 1999 DVDs from Netflix and all I can say is this is a bad idea. Magnetic fields will hurt the lunarnauts' brains and make them attack the other colonists!
And need I mention the Terrible Space Secret? I think not...
I will say Space 1999 had the coolest looking ships of any series. They actually seemed to be well designed and functional.

SA on organization
There's a pretty funny article over at Something Awful today about organization. The following quote sums up my thoughts on the subject quite nicely: Basically, I'm the world's laziest obsessive-compulsive.
...and one of the many conclusions drawn from seeing what is contained in, well, a container:
Conclusion: A colony of ants has set up shop in my filing cabinet, accepting damp cigarette butts in exchange for crafted rodent accessories. Their queen enjoys writing words alphabetically. At some point in my life that I don't remember I had an intense fetish for kettle voyeur photography. -

"the... popular simulation genre"Unfortunately, the most popular facets of the simulation genre in Japan are those of "rapist", "pedophile", and "incestual pedophile rapist", judging by Something Awful's review pages.
On a serious note, they say:
If a game like Dragon Quest VIII came out on PC, they could easily sell 4 or 5 million copies, but there's just no incentive for Square Enix to move away from consoles
but surely there's not much bigger an incentive than 4 or 5 million sales for a port?

data != information
I love how commentaries on the volume of data generated\transferred on the 'net inevitably provide a handy reference to how many Libraries of Congress it would fill, or how many tonnes of paper it would take to print. Has anyone else noticed that libraries aren't full of pointless posts like this, journals nobody reads, and well, any of these? It's not information, damnit. Archaelogists 2000 years from now are not going to dig up some kid's Angelfire site looking for documentation of our race. (Heh, at least I hope not).

Re:Spamcop's a waste of time.
It would be far more effective to simply drop any SMTP connections from networks in Brazil or China. Even better would be to actively scan emails for links pointing to that IP space, and dump any messages received. This would eliminate most spam from user mailboxes.
Alternatively, you can simply drop all SMTP connections from the entire IPv4 address space! That would eliminatate all spam from user mailboxes!
P.S. I'm being sarcastic, but blanket bans suck. -

Microsoft Behind SCO Cash Investment?
I was about halfway through the article, reached the paragraph that read, "But people in the open-source community are far from convinced. They cite the myriad of investment holding and other companies that firms like Microsoft can hide behind when making investments", and I realized I wasn't wearing my AFDB (aka "foil hat" by the masses).
I donned my AFDB and finished the article but now I'm worried. I've seen movies like "Antitrust" and "The Falcon and the Snowman" (the prequel to "The Cathedral and the Bazaar") so I know what this big companies can do. I want to post some information I've recently discovered before something...uh oh...what's that? Let me check...

Will you STUF about SomethingAwful?
I sware you fanboys try to find something to bring up SA's being listed by SPEWS. Just get over the fact that they chose to host their site with the cheapest provider, only to find out that their provider is a dump.
Besides, considering what the trolling site claims about SPEWS I what they claim Like say this one: "Network admins who use the SPEWS.ORG blocklist are thirty eight times more likely to attempt to hot glue a realistic latex vagina to a skateboard and call it by their mother's first name while having intercourse with it than those who either use no blocklist or one of many less draconian SPEWS alternatives."
So, is this a good example of what are they trying to "demonstrate" here? I also question the "serious" manner in which they address this issue. This site even belives some k00k page about how SPEWS is linked to spammers and the FUD anti-SPEWS sites. But SPEWS is the least of their worries.
They told their retared viewers to spam a anti-spam newgroup and got SA perminitly black listed by some admins. Unlike SPEWS, they will never get out of this blacklist. I doubt most of them care, SA's ISP is a dump and home to a lot of spammers. People are not going to accept mail from you if majority of stuff that comes from your IP range is spam. -
