Re:Nice...
I'll tell ya what all the fuss is about: Political Correctness (PC) and the erosion of First Amendment rights as a result.
I think PC sucks. I think censoring people because they might say something that bothers or offends me is completely anti-First Amendment. I may not like what the group Fuck Islam has to say, but they have a right to say what they want to say, no matter whether it's offensive, hate speech, politically incorrect, racist, or anything else.
Fuck Political Correctness should be the next group to organize, though the closest I could come was http://www.subgenius.com./ -

Why bother?
There is access via the web to some sources of information which exist independently and so are fairly spoof proof. For instance, someone wanting to research me could look for publications with my name on them in PubMed. Sources like that would be valid, web or no.
But as long as the web remains a place where anyone can say anything, rightly or not, anyone who relies on it for supposedly objective information that they can use to measure a person's reputation is coming in dead last in the old "Arguing on the internet" poster (http://www.argaste.com/img/arguing_on_the_interne t.jpg).
And that's exactly what should happen. The web *should* remain open to anyone for anything. An individual has no better defense against boneheads that would take whatever they find on the web seriously than to prove their faith in all things computerish as truthful misplaced by pointing out absurdities in what's available. In my last position a colleague came to me with the breathless warning that someone in the department had found some less than flattering stuff about me on the net. I responded by posting a picture of me from the net on my office door (not the same as http://www.subgenius.com/bigfist/fun/devivals/X-Da y98/POST-X-DAY/X-DayPhotos/portraitsTN/_dynasoar.h tml but from the same stage show). I never heard another word from them.
That being said, as long as anyone can post anything, a person's best defense against misinformation is disinformation. The latter invalidates the former in any rational mind. If someone still can't see the joke, that's not someone whose opinion matters to me anyway, even if it's a potential employer. I want to know when they're so informationally inbred so as to take this garbage seriously, as I want to steer clear of them. These are the same people, in spirit if not in truth, that would believe anything they read on paper if it was green and white lined line printer paper printed with dot matrix, since it obviously "came from a computer" and so must be right.
There's a real world, and the web does not reflect it any more than what's printed on that green and white lined paper. -
Re:FSM!I beg your pardon, but the FSM is a fake! I always pray to the Almighty Bob. I heard of His good name when the mayor came to speak of him in my quiet sandwich shop, and it has changed my life.
Thank you, and may Bob bless you.Believe me, Im no pink. I believe FSM and Slack go together. I would not doubt it if it was revealed the FSM gave Bob his pipe. Praise Bob!

Well if that "Bob" is this "Bob" then it's probably a feature !

Re:car mechanics do it too
While I've known some brilliant IT staff who were grumpy, most of the anointed geniuses-with-attitude were self anointed, and less than geniuses
They might be less than geniuses, but are they subgeniuses? I doubt it. -
Re:Beetle-mania
Well, Slack indicates that it's probably derived from the teachings of the Church of the SubGenius. I have no idea about authorship, though.

Re:you aren't helping matters much
I vote slack. Please become an ordained minister in the Church of the Subgenius and run for office now!

No, slack should be reserved only for members of The Church of the SubGenius..

Re: Stem Cells to Treat Brain Injury in Children
I hate to be the one to break it to you, but science is a belief system (with, at its core, axioms every bit as unprovable as any other philosophy). It is perhaps more accurate to say "there exist a number of scientific philosophies: empiricism, realism versus instrumentalism, falsifiability, and so forth". Wikipedia is by no means the only available reference. A good introductory book on constructing scientific experiments would enlighten you as to the basics, and from there, you can chase down the relevant original works listed in its bibliography. Since I am by no means an expert, nor am I a philosopher, you might also want to consult someone schooled in the study of belief systems for more information.
(The whole "science isn't a belief system" schtick annoys me every bit as much as fundamentalist Atheists who think their assertion that there is no god or gods is somehow less axiomatic than, thus superior to, other people's assertions that there is definitely, may be, or may not be a god or gods. These kinds of people disingenuously play at being rigorous intellectuals without thinking through how their own arguments apply to themselves. I think such behavior is far more hypocritical than plainly admitting to believing in certain things without a rationale, whether that's a piece of 50's clip art or God or a system of logic.)

Never mind all the panty waist mediocretin religious techings. What are they going to say when little Johhny comes home smoking a pipe full of frop and spouting unorthodox Subgenius liturgy.

Re:Why do we measure things with money?
Are you a member of the "Church of the Subgenious"?
http://www.subgenius.com/
Cause you sound like one of their priests... -
Two questions
Firstly if Jesus was supposed to have been born in the middle east how come he has a Mexican name ?
And secondly if he's pissed that I haven't been to his church for a while then all I can say is that I'm equally pissed that he hasn't been to My Church for a while.
No wait a minute.. the second part's wrong... he's actually working there at the moment. Sorry Lord I take it all back.
I'll also not mention that his followers have stolen Oestres festival for themselves and replaced her sacred Hare with some "Bob" damned "cutesy wabbit" crap 'cause that'd be too complicated for me to type (yes I'm full of booze, look it all up if you doubt me)

Re:There's already a Church of Humanism
Maybe. But it's pretty hard to take seriously a church whose website includes a button labeled "Ordain Me".

Re:Finding things is harder...
Regardless of the troll against Windows in the parent, he's right. Exceem is a failure. They not only made it closed source, but they made it spyware, a la Kazaa. Having it on Linux with the adware still inside would *not* have made it an attractive alternative.
It also connects to a centralized server, which really defeats the point of a decentralized tracker.

Re:hosting links isn't illegal
How about posting instructions on how to build an atomic bomb? Should that be legal?
I'm very sorry but unfortunately for you we live in a place where supposedly we have freedom of speech. It doesn't matter if maybe it's in the public interest for the government to consider some forms of expression illegal. THAT'S NOT IN THE GOVERNMENT'S JURISDICTION. -
Re:What RMS really means with GNU/Linux is...
You kidding? Xerox's primary benefit is the fact that their company name is used as synonymous for "copy." Brand recognition is never a bad thing.
Xerox very much wants you to respect their trademark, even running an ad in Writer's Digest to encourage TM-correctness among writers.
but if I want to call it "Linux" for simplicity's sake, I have every freedom to do so, and there's nothing he can do about it without making himself out to be a hypocrite.
There's lots he can do; he can correct you, he can write letters, etcetera, none of which impinge on your freedom.
The FSF explictly aknowledges your right to be wrong
:-) on the issue:Yes, indeed, we believe you have a free speech right to call the operating system by any name you wish. We ask that people call it GNU/Linux as a matter of doing justice to the GNU project, to promote the values of freedom that GNU stands for, and to inform others that those values of freedom brought the system into existence.

Re:The draftThe purpose of these bills is to call attention to the fact that Bush is unwilling to share the burdens of the war in Iraq among all Americans. The wealthy get tax cuts, the middle class (their children actually) get the bill, and the poor, without jobs or access to job training, have few alternatives except to do the fighting. A draft without any exemptions would even the burden somewhat.
Some facts:- George Bush miraculously jumped to the top of a 500+ person waiting list to get his berth in the Nat'l Guard and then failed to show up for a flight physical after the US spent approx $1M to train him as a pilot.
- Dick Cheny got five deferments because he had other priorities in the '60s than military service.
- John Ashcroft received several deferments during Vietnam. One was a critical occupation deferment for teaching business law at a Missouri college.
- Trent Lott (R, MS) avoided the Vietnam draft and lies about it.
- Out of the top three Republicans in the House and the top three Republicans in the Senate, none served in the military.

Re:Chickens won't even allow JythonOf course you are baiting Google, so there's that to consider...
Well, there's also this to consider.
I'm actually rather surprised no one coined the take-off "subgreatness" at all before. There's been a lot of verbage indexed since J. R. "Bob" Dobbs first appeared on the scene.

faith in science
I have faith in science - miracles every day, with the assurance that I too can perform them, if I understand its god, nature. And only one or two "axioms", articles of pure faith, to believe - simple. And rayguns!
If you are really swayed by that "I read it in a book, it must be true", you're looking for the Church of the Subgenius. -
Pagan Music
I like 60's, The Dead, The Who, etc.. I also buy modern Pagan music http://www.witchvox.com/xpaganmusic.html/ I am a Unix, Linux, and Network administrator. The first pagan music that I purchased, http://www.wiccabilly.com/lyrics-chantrant.shtml/ has referances to "Bob Dobbs", http://www.subgenius.com/ and the best Linux distribution, Slackware, also uses Bob's likeness in some of its logos.
-
Re:Not my impression.
I'm a unix sysadmin, and though I've never used slackware and have little use for Linux in general, my impression of this distro has always been that it's built by slackers (thus, the name), and as such I wouldn't want to put it on *any* server.
In other words, "I have no fucking idea what this even is, but the name sounds highly suspect so it must suck. QED."
The name has nothing to do with "slackers", it's a reference to Slack. As a distribution, it is simple to install, straightforward to administer, and has a very broad set of tools and applications available as installable packages.
You accuse the maintainers of laziness, when in fact Pat Volkerding and crew have consistently turned out the most stable, full-featured, and robust Linux distributions available for over ten years now. I wouldn't use anything else on a production server. I hope for your employer's sake that you don't leap to such ignorant conclusions while administering AIX, or Slolaris, or whatever "real" Unix you work with. -
