Re:Not exactly
Same here. Being an RPG fan, my PS2 got way more playtime than my Xbox (yes, I'm a Squeenix and Nippon Ichi junkie). When I saw the Xbox.com page boasting that all "popular genres" were covered, and no RPGs listed, that irked me. (I don't count Kameo. As good as it may be, it's really a platformer)
Fortunately, there are a couple of RPGs on the way for the platform. Ninety-Nine Nights looks interesting, but it's more action RPG-ish. What I'm really looking forward to are Enchant ARM and Blue Dragon.

Re:What's the point if the graphics suck?Well, as far as playability, you KNOW anything with the Zelda name on it is going to be really good. As far as graphics go, all the shots I've seen look like either promotional pics, or they are game play pics that are 'meh'. Example: gameplay vs. promo. Now, the 360 has some pretty nice graphics, and I am sure once developers get a feel for the system they will make some amazing looking games, but for now, I think that this looks pretty damn close to the 360 launch games.
For the record, I will freely admit that I am a Nintendo fanboy. They have a console that has ALWAYS been less expensive than any of it's competitors, but is able to produce game experiences at least is good, if not better than what Sony or MS is offering. I had an XBox for while, and it didn't offer me ANYTHING that I couldn't get better from a PC. I bought a used GameCube a couple years ago and my non-gamer wife loves it, AND I get to play all the first party exclusives that Nintendo has to offer.

Re:What's the point if the graphics suck?
I can't speak on playability, but unless you have quite intentionally avoided all xbox 360 news except for trolling, most of the Xbox 360 games look quite good. Whether you are into the types of games they produce is a different subjsct, but it's hard to argue that the native games don't look great.

Re:PC Upgradability
720p is required, 1080i is optional (see? or here?; and the console itself is going to cost you almost as much as the equivalent PC, sans display. That pretty effectively wipes out the whole "video cards are too expensive compared to consoles" point I was responding to.
The Xbox 360 doesn't look like a particularly bad console, though. Once you can actually buy it (not anytime soon) outside of a $2000(!) system bundle, I'll probably pick one up. Dunno if I'll kick in a monthly fee to Microsoft in addition to my ISP to play online, though, my PC lets me do that for free. The extra $50 per controller stings, too, as does the extra $40 per memory card. Actually, maybe I'll stick with PC gaming... it's cheaper. -

TheInquirer aren't reliable sources
I wouldn't trust The Inquirer regarding PS3 news.
They were the ones who spread false PS3 news last week based on a message board post saying that the Nvidia 7800GTX was faster than the PS3's RSX. It turned out that the person on the message board misread PSM magazine and it really said the RSX is FASTER than the 7800GTX. I don't think that they do any fact checking. Likelyhood is that Sony manfacters the Blu-ray drives in house and it won't cost more than adding the DVD to the PS2 and they would likely be able to leverage economies of scale in the long run(which were very expensive at the time of the PS2 launch).

Re:Wow!
Um hello. You need to block out more than that. Most remaining numbers are part#s but there are several that are likely unique identifiers for the part. Anything not easily identified as a general part # needs to be removed.
Agreed. It is easy to imagine a database that tracks all the serial numbers together. Query against just one of those and you have the rest. Once you have the box's serial number, look up who got the machine and assess the need to punish the developer for violating the NDA.
I'd bet these machines were not cheap to Microsoft. Hardware before launch is exceptionally valuable, certainly more valuable than the cost to develop simply because your factories aren't up to speed yet. One developer, as pictured, decided to take Microsoft's investment offline, away from game development and take some pictures. Maybe it's a 2 hour expedition that's to be done "off-hours" by employees on personal time so no project was impacted, but more likely the effects will last into development time-- it took longer than expected or something broke. Either way, it's an unnecessary pile of risks that tells Microsoft how much they value the machine and the NDA they signed.

5. What is Xbox Live Silver?
The Xbox Live Silver service means you can connect your Xbox 360 console to a broadband Internet connection and get functionality right out of the box without having to pay any amount of money.
With Xbox Live Silver you can:
Create an online Gamer Profile
Access the Xbox Live Marketplace
Engage in voice and text messaging
Talk to a single friend at a time using voice chat
Receive video messages from Gold level members
Access massively multiplayer online games (additional fees may apply)
6. What is Xbox Live Gold?
The Xbox Live Gold is similar to the current paid Xbox Live service. The Xbox Live Gold service delivers the complete online connection package. With Xbox Live Gold you have all the features of Silver level, and additionally:
Play multiplayer games online
Video chat
Multiplayer online tournaments
Participate in Xbox Live online programming, such as Game with Fame, Play and Win, and Prime Time activities.
7. I heard that the Xbox Live Silver service will allow me to play multiplayer games online on weekends. Is that true?
Yes and No. It is not true that Xbox Live Silver users will be able to play multiplayer games like Xbox Live Gold members every weekend. However, Microsoft plans to allow Silver users to play multiplayer games online on special weekends similar to when HBO has free programming weekends.

Re:well, that will probably be bad
Microsoft has said again and again that games MUST NOT rely on a hard drive being present on the Xbox 360. Also, unlike on the Xbox, all savegames must be small enough to fit on the (64 Megabyte) memory cards.

Xbox to be 299 not 149 as article says
Slashdotters. If you value your geekery, do not buy an xbox. I am pretty miffed at the numbers who did on here (you know who you are!). Just think. Cell architecture. YOU KNOW linux is going to be working on PS3 much cooler than XBOX, and you just know the best use for all this new technology is to run tux racer, so just think about it!
Which is whack - check out:
The Inquirer and TotalVideogames claim that Wal-Mart employees apparently have leaked the launch date and price of the Xbox 360. According to these reports, the Xbox 360 will retail for $299 and the launch will be Friday, November 4th.
From Aug 2nd told at some site
Now, personally, I think this article was a little FUDDY, but customers may wait out for the PS3, i.e. when making a choice, wait for the second option, when it appears, it always looks newer and sexier. Now, Christmas may make a hiccup in these strategies, but XBox is aiming for this period.
If people decide to wait for next gen, then a 99$ pstwo may leap in sales, this christmas may be the christmas for PStwo and PSP!!
People might step over the Xbox launch, to look at handhelds, and then wait out for the next next-gen , the PS3. -
Re:Perhaps a response from Sony to MS..
Its interesting that this comes quite soon after Bill Gates himself announced that the first next-gen Xboxes would ship with non-HD DVD drives
He did no such thing. It has ALWAYS been specified that the Xbox360 would have a regular DVD drive (see this article from May), because the next gen formats would not be available in time. What he announced recently was that in the future, they may ship new models with HD DVD drives. -

You're 100% right
It's an Xbox game (very soon):
http://games.teamxbox.com/xbox/944/Battlefield-2-M odern-Combat/ -
It's a little bit of everythingOne of the main reasons the Xbox did as well as it did was due to Halo. It had one killer app that everyone just needed to have and that you couldn't get anywhere else.
What will end up making or breaking the Xbox 360 are the games that are available when the product launches. This article has a list of probable launch titles for the Xbox 360. Team Xbox also has a few predictions. The question is, are any of these killer apps that I just need to have and that I won't be able to get anywhere else?
A quick glance at the list and I know there isn't anything on there that I just have to play right away. Some of you might differ, but to me it looks like a lot of those games are more of the same old that will probably see PS3 versions with the possibility of slightly better graphics.
The launch titles are especially important for the Xbox 360 because there are still a lot of doubts about the compatibility of Xbox games. Apparently, some explanation has been given about hos it will work, but I've heard a few rumors that say backwards compatibility won't be there. If there aren't any games I need to have for the Xbox 360 and I can't play my Xbox games on them right out of the box, then do I really need an Xbox 360 right away?
The final factor is the price and what I get for it. Sony has called the Xbox 360, the Xbox 1.5, which I won't entirely believe, but does have a few points. Right now it has a plain old DVD drive in it. Where's the next-gen media format support? A recent EGM article hinted that this might be upgradable to HD-DVD if MS feels the need to do it. The Xbox will also serve as a media center, which I really don't need. So is $300 worth the price of admission? Considering that the PS3 is expected to launch for $400 or more and include more next-gen bells and whistles, I might consider waiting for that if I needed a media center. Then again, Nintendo is trying to ship their console for $200 or less. Granted that Nintendo isn't offering an all-in-one package, but it is an affordable gaming console. The only problem is that I'd have to wait almost another year for it to come out.
As metioned in the article, brand loyalty will certainly play a part in what people decide to do. Since I own all three major consoles, I don't really see myself as loyal to any particular brand. Each has its merits though.
If I had to make a prediction, I'm going to guess that the Xbox 360 will do quite well in America taking the number 2 spot and picking up market share, but will do poorly in Japan.

Re:In the year 2000... (and 9)
Interesting interview about what they're doing with the Xbox 360 at TeamXbox... specifically they're going to support VGA connections on retail consoles (with an accessory cable) but marketing-weasel-dodge the hell out of any digital connections at this point in time.
-
Re:DammitWierd. Because I came across this:
But it does seem you are correct.
One thing I am doubtful about - I really don't understand what is so great about the game. I suppose the graphics are pretty good but I've seen as good or better demos the next gen and almost as good demos for current gen. Hells bells, how hot can it be if they are running on hardware that they built months ago.
Anyway, it's a good read, but def not sold on the game.

Re:Hm. Astroturf much?
Sorry xbox fanboy/MS PR astroturfer
Excuse me? And you're not a Sony fanboy?
I have an Xbox and a PS2. The last console game I bought (and played to death) was Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2 - and I'm planning on picking up a PSP when GTA finally comes out for it. Although if any games come out on both platforms, the Xbox version is usually the one to get as it's a better machine.
If I came across as having a negative attitude towards the PS3, it's only because of the smug air of superior contempt from Sony (and people like you) over the PS3. Remember the PS2's "Emotion Engine" massive overhype that turned out to be nothing more than a big marketing joke? I'm inclined to not believe a single word about the PS3 until I can see it for myself.
the PS3 has been in development longer
So it's an older, more dated design than the 360 then? That'll be a problem for Sony if the PS3 is obsolete by the time it hits the shelf...
And the amazingly poor showing at E3 seems to have been so bad as to turn off a large percentage of even the most diehard xbox owners.
Except that some retailers have already blown through their 360 pre-order allocations. This does not sound "turned off" to me.
We doubt MS will be able to even hold
Sorry - who is "we"? With your acidic hatred and disrespect of the Xbox and Dreamcast (including repeated use of the term "Dreamcast 360" - which isn't clever or funny), you're sounding more and more like a Sony rep. At worst you are reciting the opinions of others - at best it is in your interest to see the PS3 succeed. Your opinion is not exactly unbiased.
It looks like the diehard xbox fanboys really only have one thing right now and that is clinging to any of the high estimates for the PS3's price.
I thought they were drooling over Project Gotham and Gears Of War.. not to mention Final Fantasy and Prey. -
Re:$100 more than the Xbox 360? Ouch.
Nope - analysts predict a $75 loss per Xbox 360 sold at $300
Quoting another analyst doesn't give your claims any more validity, it's WAY to early to be talking about console prices in any kind of absolutes. There is no way any of these analysts know what Sony or Microsoft are going to be getting their parts for, much less what they spend on the parts they manufacturer themselves. At best these analysts' predictions are educated guesses, at worst they are outright lies.
The $494 price tag was reached when Merrill Lynch Japan estimated that the PS3's main components( Cell chip, RSX, and BD-ROM drive) would cost about 11,000 yen ($101) each and the other components would make up the rest of the 54,000 yen . That was a rough estimate, which was probably very wrong. I can't find how the analysts at the UBS investment bank determined that the 360 was going to cost $375 to manufacter, but I imagine those estimates are even more bull shit than Merrill Lynch's figures. -
Re:$100 more than the Xbox 360? Ouch.
Given that the 360 is including a HD it's likely to cost more to produce.
Nope - analysts predict a $75 loss per Xbox 360 sold at $300 (so, a price of $375 to manufacture). While the article in this story is saying just a hair shy of $500 to manufacture a PS3 unit.
Keep in mind, not only did Sony sink a ton of money into Cell R&D, but they're also packing in a Blu-Ray drive, and those easily spank the cost of the hard drive at this point in time.
You're right that Sony could end up pricing right alongside Microsoft - I even said that. I also pointed out that doing so means taking MASSIVE losses per unit. It could happen, but the losses won't be so easily sneezed off.

Uh... what?

Re:Xbox 360 v. PS3
A few specs you didn't include:
I think the XBox Live Silver is a great idea -- I probably wouldn't use it much, but I know lots of people who will buy an XBox360 for that feature alone (plus a few games). That said, Sony can make a similar system if they want to after the fact, or Sega could bring Heat.net to the PS3.
Audio
PS3 has support for DD 5.1, DTS (6.1 maybe?), "etc" (from their site)
All I could find on the XBox360 was "The console has a multi-channel surround sound output that supports 48 KHz, 16-bit for over 256 audio channels. Internally, the console can process 320 independent channels in 32-bit mode." (from the site above)
Performance
According to this site, you could try using the 3 x 3.2GHz CPUs in your xFlops calculations instead. Each core also has a vector unit (any performance values anyone?).
Silence
The XBox 360 uses a water cooling system which should be quieter than the normal fan systems if done right. How will the PS3 be cooled?
Devkits
We won't know much about this right away, but part of the gamer's experience comes from how easy/hard the platform creator makes it for the game developper to bring these features alive. If the SDKs make it easy to render 3D audio automatically based on environment mapping and make pixel shading easy or dynamic lighting simpler, then you'll see more of these features out of the gate.
Some developpers will always push the envelope, but the average game you buy probably won't. -
Re:PowerPC CPU?
No, John, I don't yet have "a hardware accelerator for game physics in your PC?"
But, they are going to be shipping by the time the Xbox 360 is being released.
And here's a link for it:

Re:It's a nice thought
Babbster posted the following:
" This is why moving first on their new home console may be a big benefit to Microsoft...."
Yes, just like the Dreamcast helped Sega.
or the Jaguar helped Atari?
Personally, I'm not holding my breath. I haven't seen the Xbox 360 in action, and sure, from it's specs it sounds nice. But then, the Cell chips sound very nice for the PS3. Not to mention Nintendo might actually have something very good this time around (but once again, I'm not holding my breath).
once the machines are out, and games are out for them, then I can make judgements.
But the problem with the consoles is technology can rapidly outpace them. Sure, Xbox360 may be nothing like we currently have now, but by the xmas 2005 we will see things like PPU add-in cards (PhysX Chip http://interviews.teamxbox.com/xbox/1117/AGEIA-Tec hnologies-Interview/p1
)
Which has the ability to completely change gaming.
But of course, how much depends on how the final product works.
There is a chance it's in the Xbox360, but I doubt it. They would of mentioned it by now I would think. Seems to me the addition of one of these chips would be ideal to console makers.

This conversation will happen one day
"Uh, yes, I'd like to return this unit."
"Why?"
"Because somebody sat on it!"
