Re:Intel's dual-core lieAbsolutely true. And the lie goes even farther than that:
Thier initial desktop "dual core" processor is really a dual processor kludge. It's just two Prescott P4s side by side with a bit of extra wiring between them. They are essentially going to make half as many wafer cuts and call the resulting double-wide processors "dual core".
AMD really has got Intel by the short hairs lately. First AMD released x86-64 and Intel had to clumsily pkay catch-up, now AMD will be releasing dual core processors and Intel is again clumsily trying not to be left in the dust.

You know what else is at CES?
SNOW. No, not the rapper from the early/mid 90s, but that white stuff that falls from the sky. Kinda odd, considering that Las Vegas is a desert climate - it reaches about 110F in the summertime.

#1 Phantom spotted at CESApparently a working? unit is being presented at the CES going on in Las Vegas right now

best codec is one I can use in a $60 DVD player
I love my $60 Philips DVP 642 Divx/Xvid stand-alone DVD Player:
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=20465
http://walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id= 2598455
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000 204SWE
When they make a $60 DVD player for other codecs than MPEG2/MPEG4 I'll be interested. Until then, why bother if something is a little bit better? A WMV9 DVD player would probably be another $50 and not worth it (not that they even exist right now). -
Firefox browsing speeds
I'm a fairly long-term Firefox user anyway but until today I had thought that it was not much better than IE for browsing speed. However I just read this article from The Inquirer about how to make Firefox fly along - takes about a minute to change a few settings. If you're on broadband this is superb, particularly on sites with a lot of small graphics eg news.bbc.co.uk

Intel rushes to fix Alviso bug.http://theinquirer.net/?article=20405
whoopty-f*i*kin-ding-dong!!!
THERE IS A MINOR, and I mean minor bug in Alviso that won't be fixed before launch. The DDR subsystem doesn't like to power down the way it should, so if you look at the initial numbers, DRR2 will end up looking much better than it really is.
I say this is a minor problem because you would pretty much have to me a moron to buy an Alviso machine with DDR anyway. The 15 or so minutes of battery life when you use DDR2 is well worth the price premium, especially considering it is probably not going to be in cheap laptops to begin with.
...Note: the Alviso machine is a Sonoma-based (==Dothan with 533MHz FSB instead of 400MHz FSB) notebook that Intel will start to release it in 16-January-2005.
Don't buy the EXPENSIVE & AWFUL CENTRINO's PENTIUM-M !!!

What about HSQL, a database engine written in Java that has beaten some C++ engines and IBM's Cloudscape? Stated here

Re:PowerPC version of Windows NT?
As daoine_sidhe said, the XBox 2 Developers Kit was released on Apple G5s running Windows (with a custom ppc NT kernel). (from theinquirer)
The XBox2 itself runs on power/powerpc processors, so using apples hardware for development workstations makes sense, and as its still running windows its not like microsoft are shouting out that apple machines (as a whole) are better than theirs. -
Another number: 99% dropI love numbers. You can look at them any way you want and make up nearly any story you want to go with them. While some posters are talking about "only a 7%" drop in SCO shares and say this is nothing, you can look at another number and become tingly with delight at a 99% drop in SCO's licensing revenues, from $10.3M 20034Q to $120,000 this 4Q (Forbes story with ads here). This was the big contibuting factor in a total revenue drop of about 60% (and resulting stock drop).
Naturally, the truth is somewhere in between. This is bad news for SCO's strategies. That does not mean McBride won't be able to convince his minders to hold the course and continue with litigation. Strictly speaking, at this moment, they're still convinced. Neverhteless, it's obviously a bumpy road ahead for them.
So, don't throw a victory party yet, but I think we're all entitled to spend a few minutes smirking.

Acutally, it runs Linux!
According to an article here:
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=19922
It's instant-on software is an embed version of Linux! Supercool! I want one!
And street pricing seems to be about $250 for it...so it's cheap! Now that's just a bare-bones system, but still, you could have a nice PVR for under $600 USD!
Sweet!

A few things..
First of all, the exploit is in PHP (see here), not phpBB, the worm just happens to attack phpBB. I just think that should be cleared up before people start spreading FUD about how phpBB is insecure.
Secondly, this issue has been patched for a month now (see this announcement) and the phpBB group has reminded users several times to upgrade. -

Stay online for 6 hours?
Which distro bundles OO.o pre-2.x? No wait, none, because OO.o pre-2.x came out just two days ago.
Download the 2.0 PR.
"Linux 95M | Win 78M" doesn't help if you're on NetZero dial-up. Lots of ISPs kick the user off after about 2 hours of being connected (long enough to download 30 MB if you're lucky), and lots of people don't know Wget exists, let alone how to use it.

Re:Wafer computing at last?
The problem is not then processor numbers but bus contention. This article, posted by another user, goes into some of the problems. If you start putting the Level II, Level III and DRAM on other wafers the delays are going to kill you unless you stack the wafers in 3D -- and *that* is going to be really expensive technology.

Re:Bad track recordMicrosoft is definitely thinking about bundling AV software with Windows now... In the UK they have started to offer Computer Associates AV software as a bundle with OEM for System Integrators.
Apparently though, in Israel (WTF?) it is proving harder to get Win XP OEM withOUT McAfee bundled then it is WITH...
Imagine a world where every copy of Windows comes with AV - like bundling antidote and poison into the same pill! Perhaps Symantec purchasing Veritas is giving them more branches to follow then just the security arena that M$ is moving into...

Re:Maybe if they would bring back VMS,,,
Indeed. And HP itself knows it -- as reported on Slashdot before, they allegedly suppressed Alpha benchmarks to keep from cannibalizing (and embarrassing) their Itanic server business.
(Note to readers, parent post is responding to an AC, not my original post.)

Re:What's the problem?
Red Hat's Linux clearly in this context means Red Hat's version of Linux. Ok, it's ambigous but let's not get stupid with the nit picking.
Nitpicking? He's still wrong, a very sigificant portion of all Linux installs by businesses and corporations, are in other distros than Red Hat. In my particlular corner of the world Suse is the distro of choice for most businesses. In fact I'd say Suse actually has Red Hat on the run over here. Red Hat may be the distro of coice in the US where a DoD official is reported to have expresed the following opinion of Suse: We don't use that German ****! but then again the Linux using world is alot larger than the USA alone. -
Re:Maybe if they would bring back VMS,,,
A couple of synthetic benchmarks prove nothing. In real world applications, itanic sucks. If alpha could run at 1.6GHz, it would beat the trousers off of itanic hands down. Face it, itanic is a turkey.

Funny, but pertinent
An additional problem is that there are too many loons on the internet screaming hysterically about Spyware at the slightest opportunity rather than helping people really understand the issues and make informed choices.

We've all watched the demise of Alpha, Tru64, PA-RISC, Itanium, storage - it's now irrefutable that HP-UX is on its way to that same, very crowded boneyard. Along with the systems devoted to running it." http://www.linuxworld.com/story/47317.htm/

according to my irc channel, the state of the movie not being about hell, not being based on mars, not having space marines but instead swat teams, and having mutated virus monsters instead of hellspawn is analagous to something you would see being done to Jenna Jameson in one of her many films. also, Here's an editorial on the movie.

Re:AmazingI wonder if it has the same quirk as was reported in the Inquirer today:
"any URL beginning with extra http:// at the front seems to take you to Microsoft's home page"
Try "http://http://slashdot.org". It seems that the extra "http://" winds up redirecting you to Microsoft. Wierd. -

Why top of the line products existTechnology companies make top of the line products for the same reason that the Wendys fast food chain sells triple cheeseburgers.
Several years ago the top execs at Wendys noticed that the triple cheeseburgers weren't selling very well, and decided to take them off the menu. When they did that, they found that sales of their double cheeseburgers dropped to almost nothing.
After conducting several surveys and focus groups, they found out what the problem was. With triple cheeseburgers on the menu, the double cheeseburgers were perceived as mainstream items that people felt comfortable ordering. Without the triples, the doubles became the high end item and people avoided it.
Since their profits on the double cheeseburgers were higher, they decided to bring back the triples not for the sake of selling triples but for the boost to doubles sales.
Thanks to Bob Colwell for this anecdote.
