Re:OS X with two types of processors.I'm afraid you are mistaken. Bias in the popular news channels is a significant factor in misinformation spread about Israel, its history, and the history of the so-called Palestians. (Sometimes, things aren't what they seem.) Please refer to:

Re:Hey, whose side are they on?
Oh come on, even Israeli lobbying sites aren't claiming anything as ridiculous as that. The best that *they* claim is that they were *willing to negotiate* the right of return of *some* refugees, but that Israel never would have, and never would accept all of them because then they'd comrpise 40% of the Israeli population.
Besides, most *Jewish historians* even are at odds with your view of what happened in al-Nakba. Please realize that you come across sounding like a holocaust denier when you deny something that even the historians of people who committed it in general accept.
Here, why don't you read what historian Benny Morris has to say on it, for starters, and what documents are available from the time to indicate what went on and what was deliberate/unintentional. Morris, who supports the *complete* ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians in the *present day*, even admits what happened in 1948. -
Re:Hey, whose side are they on?
Yes, I have heard of homemade rockets used for terrorism. Ever heard of Hamas' constant use of the Qassam rockets? I'm not saying that overregulating model rocketry for law abiding citizens is A-OK, but since you posed the question, yes, amateur rockets have definitely been, and continue to be used for terrorist activities.

Re:Democracy?
Dear Christ.
There is NO evidence that Iraq was involved in the events of 11th September 2001.
GWB's pretext for invading Iraq was that it wasn't honouring various UN resolutions. That was a hugely presumptuous argument: if someone's breaching UN resolutions then it's up to the UN to decide how and whether to respond. Not individual members.
In fact, the international community made it clear that it didn't believe there was an urgent need to invade Iraq. Yet GWB invaded anyway, while, incredibly, claiming he was "enacting the will of the Security Council."
I've heard Americans argue that opposition to the invasion was influenced by vested interests. That's a fair argument for scrutinising the decision-making process more carefully. But it's not acceptable for UN members to simply disregard the views of other members on grounds of doubting their objectivity. If it were then we could look forward to the imminent invasion of Israel by any number of nations. After all, that country is in breach of several UN resolutions, and many more that were defeated only by a US veto.
Of course the attack on the World Trade Centre warranted a response. But, given the fanatical and nebulous nature of the enemy, that response needed to be thoughtful and pragmatic. Bush has absolutely failed to rise to the challenge. His arrogant and belligerent foreign policy has stirred up far more hatred of the west than ever existed beforehand; and his diplomatic failings have set the cause of world peace back by at least 20 years. Kim Jong-Il (for example) now knows that a hostile power might try to invade and overthrow him at any time, with no regard for international law. What effect do you think that has on his strategic planning? I rather doubt he's decommissioning missles.
Right now you're saying "good thing we went to war." I hope for all our sakes you don't have to find out how wrong you are. -
Re:Wer Deutschland Liebt?
Have you ever been to London?
Yes. And an aunt of mine lived their during the war. While the actual destruction was not at all as devastating as what Germany had to endure, it was certainly not for lack of trying. My aunt gave a very gripping account of the terror that the V2 evoked. It was a death that you did not see coming since it was the 1st supersonic weapon ever. She told us "if you heard it you knew you were al right this time. But it made you feel vulnerable all the time because you weren't save anywhere in London, and there was nothing anybody could do against it." It was perfect state terrorism.
Perhaps, but given how much advanced gas was produced, like sarin, you would think a reasonable person, upon hearing of the attrocities committed by the Russian army as they advanced through East Prussia would make you give up that resolve.
Ever cared to read an objective biography on Hitler?
Hundreds of thousands left, even according to Jewish sources.
And millions have been killed in the holochost.
By far more than survived
A grand-aunt of mine was married to a Jewish German. His name was Wilhelm - as German a name as you can get at the time. They were both chemist and managed to get away to the US before it was to late, but all of Wilhelm's family perished in the Holocaust. His sister and her husband made it to France just to be arrested the night before trying to make their final get-away by boat. I always admired him for being able to come to Germany without hate.
So, what were all those Jews doing from the time Hitler was elected in 1933 until the holocaust supposedly happened in 1943?
If you would care to educate yourself on the issue you would know that the discrimination against Jewish Germans started very gradually. First the synagogues burned, than they had to wear stars, then they were held in ghettos and then gradually they vanished out of sight. The Nazis were very careful in not advertising what happened to the people in concentration camp. They were "just" supposed to be forced to work, and many in fact were exploited that way. It has been reported that even many inmates of the concentration camps thought it was inconceivable that Germany even as badly tainted by Nazism as it was would simply kill its own citizen. A lot of effort was spend on entertaining this illusion. Making the gas chambers in the camps look as inconspicuous as possible (sometimes a shower head was just a device to release water but sometimes it would release something far more lethal).
You can go to Auschwitz and take a look for yourself at the streamlined manufactory of death. Efficient as a state of the art slaughterhouse. If you compare for instance with how many cattle is slaughtered per year in the US the number of victims becomes absolutly plausible. -
Re:MODERATERS DO YOU HAVE NO SENSE
Mod it up if you have to but don't call it insightfull or interesting because it is fundamentally trolling. Only that this is not about software but about disregarding millions killed in concentration camps.
This is not about "disagreeing with my opinion". It is about misrepesenting historic facts.
Usually if somebody spouts ignorant falsehood about IT issues on this board the moderators eventually catch it.
The number of Jewish people killed in the holochost by far outweights the number of Jewish people who survived (by emmigration or other means).
Moderators are supposed to supress falsehood. The original comment clearly makes the point that more Jewish people escaped than have been killed.
In dubio pro reo. Let's assume the poster did not know better. -
Re:money useful ??The UN refers to the area as the occupied territories
According to international law, land can be considered occupied only if it belongs to a "foreign sovereign." Since no state of Palestine exists or has ever existed, there is no occupied territory that so-called Palestinians can lay claim to.
hell even the Israeli government refers to it as so
It was uttered once by the flailing Prime Minister in a moment of extraordinary stupor. It is not an official position of the government.
ask any palestinian if they're living under occupation or not when settlers can and do take your land,
In the 1930s, European anti-Semites used to sneer, "Jews, go to Palestine." Now, they say, "Jews, get out of Palestine." Where do you propose they go? Arabs have 22 countries and 11,796,381 sq km of land. Jews can't have 1 country and 20k sq km? Eretz Yisrael is their traditional homeland. They were there thousands of years before Mohammad lived.
then armies stop you from moving freely and living your daily life
After Arab terrorists in the area murder Israelis, the Israeli forces temporarily stop them from moving freely. If 80% of the PA-run areas' population (according to a recent survey) didn't support the intifada and if the Arabs didn't use their freedom to murder Jews in their homes, Israeli forces wouldn't be compelled to restrict their movement.
when you're not allowed to go to your school
What, so they can be brainwashed and taught to hate and learn songs like "Arabs Our Beloved and Jews Our Dogs"? They'd be better off if they never went to those schools again. But again, the temporary clampdowns are to tighten security after Arab terror attacks.
or visit your friends and relatives in your land then your land is occupied.
They should quit launching mortars and rockets into homes from "their land."

what about multihead missiles?
this is the threat, at least in israel (shihab 4). the latest israeli anti-missile system "ha-hetz" (the arrow) was designed to handle only singleheads. obviously it's not enough.

Re:Better The the Patriots Detection?
Your post shows ignorance of the PATRIOT system (it's an acronym: Phased Array Tracking Radar and Intercept Of Targets, I think), its design goals, its complexity and your dependance on media sensationalism.
You should look up what Arrow is meant to be used for (missile defense only). You should also look up what PATRIOT was built for. It was designed to shoot down airplanes and helicopters. It was built as a "plain old" Surface to Air Missile system (SAM). The Army decided after it was built that they wanted it to shoot down ballistic and cruise missiles which are orders of magnitude harder to identify, hit and kill. It is a compliment of PATRIOT's abilities that it was given this task.
THAAD (Theater High Altitude Area Defense) is also being built for large area protection from tactical ballistic missiles (TBMs). It will be the compliment to the Patriot system and PATRIOT's eventual successor (MEADS?, Medium Extended Air Defense System).
You say that Israel uses Arrow, but when was the last time it was used to intercept a TBM in wartime operations? PATRIOT was designed 30 YEARS AGO and to this day it remains the only system proven in battle to do so. Notice that neither Arrow or THAAD are being built with the range of capabilities that PATRIOT has. It seems that the military and engineers realized that TBM intercept is hard enough that having other intercept abilities are an overbearingly daunting task. PATRIOT proved that TBMs can be intercepted and neutralized as a battlefield threat. Newer systems will build upon what was learned in the PATRIOT effort.
PATRIOT is a dynamic system. Its hardware and software are continually updated in order to meet the challenges of the battlefield. To say it is defective downplays the daily efforts of thousands of dedicated engineers. -
Re:She looks halfway decent at least
I don't get why someone that's intelligent would reply to such a post. The article mentioned you're sensitive on the "chick hacker" topic, but is it such a reflex to respond to trolls and ignorant people when there are things more worth your time?
Since you talk about this on your webpage, I'll write my opinions here. It's greatly unfortunate the chauvinism in computer science/engineering and the world in general. And while I'm sure that has impact on women entering the field, I think that's minor compared to other cultural factors.
Rates in grad school are probably a little different from undergrad and this is only one case, but let's look at my school. In the CSE department, only 26 out of 146 students are female (18%). Most statistics I've seen hover around 20% (for graduate and undergraduate engineering in general). Here, 65% of the grad students are foreign. While the US men hold at 38%, only 19% of the female are from the US. While China and India "only" account for 53% of the men, they account for 69% of the women. While China and India's percentages of women are still low (31% and 23%, respectively), it's much better than the rest (10%).
So either many women aren't finding this intersting, they find it too difficult, or there are cultural issues involved (or mixtures). So is the government (and society in general) not taking steps we should be? If so, what are they? The same can be said regarding male teachers.
Kids are already being told to fear math and science and find it difficult and boring, what other social factors need to be addressed to change what's being told to the girls? While chauvinism is a factor (and should be addressed just because it's wrong), I think there are many other issues (many of which I don't know) that need to be addressed before we can see any dent in the percentages. I mean, recent statistics (going on memory from 60 Minutes report) show girls getting better grades than boys in high schools and the majority of students at MSU are girls. So it's beyond just stressing education.
Generalities and stereotypes can be used very negatively, but at the same time, they are often indicative of something and they should be studied and learned from. Some believe they already know or don't care, however, too many people consider the issues too sensitive to even discuss. It's generally accepted that physically, top female athletes in many sports cannot compete with the top men. Our physiologies are different enough that men have the advantage and we know enough to explain much of that.
But what are the reasons for male to female ratios in top chess players and other mental/educational disciplines? Why do certain racial and ethnic groups score much higher than others in SAT and other standardized tests? How come Jews around the world (with a smaller population than my home country of Nepal, around 13 million to 26 million) hold more wealth, influence and power despite being persecuted almost everywhere they go?
However, the main people really "thinking" about these issues are male chauvinists, extreme feminists, racist bigots and anti-semitists/Islamic fundamentalists. That's not a good sign...
Anyhow, good job in the interview and I thought your answers were well said. Good luck on improving computer security and raising awareness of security. And good luck on changing the atmosphere of chauvinism (of course I'll do my part).

That's a lot of chiken shit...You grossly underestimate the size and intensity of the Iran/Iraq War. It was easily the largest conflict since WWII.
Casualty figures are difficult to figure, but somewhere between 500,000 and one million people lost their lives during it. There were at least an addition 2 million or so non-lethal casualties.

Re:Nothing new
Ugh. It is well known that Israel is often ahead of the U.S. in developing new military technology. I think you should be asking whether the planes you saw employed by the U.S. army were bought from Israel. Although the U.S. was the first to experiment with drones during Vietnam, it is Israel that created the first incredibly succesfull drones which inspired the united states UAV program. At the time it was embarassing to the DOD that Israel's tiny budget could accomplish what they had spent billions on and failed. This is what is meant when people say that the money pumped into Israel more than pays for itself with the intelligence and technology they provide.

I don't want to start too much of a flame war, but I think that there is a lot of myths flying around regarding Israel. I will restrain myself from ranting, but want to steer your attention to this website [www.us-israel.org] full of facts, WITH SOURCES. Take some time and become educated.

English, with its 20 vowel sounds as opposed to the 5 of Hebrew
I count six: short-o, long-a, short-e, long-e, long-o, long-u. In addition to those, my Hebrew school taught that a long-o followed by "yod" was rhymed with "boy".

Re:Article text
As if there were ever doubt any longer that America were a police state
...
You don't really have any concept of what a police state is, do you?
These people had a warrant. Issued by a (mostly) impartial judge. They were investigating an actual crime of serious magnitude commited against a company that I, for one, am very grateful for making.
In a real police state (Nazi Germany, Stalist Russia, etc...), the FBI would not have rung your doorbell at 6:30am. They would not have had a warrant, and they most certianly would not have been civilized while they hauled only some your stuff out the door. They would have kicked down your door at 3am, killed your family, and set your house on fire. All because you belived in the wrong religion, or were the member of the wrong political party.
FBI raids are not pretty, but like it or not, this is how a fair and just legal system works. When you have to balance the rights of victims and the rights of the accused, nobody comes out happy. I don't know if this guy is guilty or innocent, but he should keep his mouth shut, call a lawyer, and take advantage of every other right that he has. And he can do that because he doesn't live in a police state, he lives in a free country. That's why he's laughing about this whole thing instead of next in line to get his hand chopped off at the local prison. -
Re:and the point of that would be?
(I'm assuming you're American, forgive me if that isn't the case) I find it amusing that you're saying New Zeland shouldn't send an independent country, Niue, about $8M a year, while at the same time the US is sending in the order of $3B to Israel. With that much money, you'd think the US would get to control the country and not the opposite...

Der Juden
Obviously someone survived otherwise we wouldn't be hearing from you. Guess they didn't kill your parents, how did they survive? You would think it makes more sense to kill the children first... you can pack more of them into that oven!
Isn't it amazing how many Jews you meet who claims their grandparents or parents or some other direct blood relative died in the holocaust? Or better yet, all the holocaust "survivers"? a million Tutsis were killed in Africa in a mere 3 months with nothing more than machetes... Yet, all that brilliant German engineering couldn't kill all 10 million Jews in Europe in 3 years...
Did you grandfather play in the Auschwitz Orchestra?? I wonder how many performances he made before he was gassed! People die better when they have played some music for a while.
Isn't it also funny how virtually every European country has made it a felony to question whether or not the holocaust happened? Or even revise the numbers?
We are tired of hearing you whine Jude. You have your homeland, life has sucked for you. Fucking go there. The holohoax lies has gotten you all the sympathy you will get. The game is up.
oh, if you want a quick refresher on why Jews have been hated for the last 2000 years, don't forget to read the classic.

Re:Check your factsWell, apparently most of the links offered by the other replies to this are from pro-Palestinian sources. Here's an interesting read, with full references, that debunks much of the Palestinian propaganda that is being fed by AP, Reuters, etc.
I admit that these are Jewish sites and pro-Israel. They are, however, as close as I've seen to being objective and sticking to historical facts. (I am Jewish and Israeli.)
Myths & Facts Online - A Guide to the Arab-Israeli Conflict
And for up-to-the-minute information on the latest news, see HonestReporting. Their newsletter offers some fascinating insight on Mideast events and how they are portrayed in the media, most often biased in favor of the Palestinians.
*sigh*
.. Can the name "Israel" ever be mentioned here without waking all the bigots and spurring a political debate? This doesn't happen if the country mentioned is, say, China.phozz

Steal It
I'm surprised Israel just doesn't steal Office. They stole nuke secrets from American, and illegally sold radar technology to China. Israel illegally stole Palestinian land. Israel began a war in 1967 to steal Egyptian, Syria, Jordanian and Lebanese land. They illegally tried to sink a known US ship to steal land in the Golan Heights.

von Neumann was a Jew & Hungary persecuted Jew
Your statements are false. von Neumann was a Jew and his name reflects this (yiddish). Hungarians did not change their names because Hungary was part of the Austrian empire.
Moreover Hungary is notorious for heavily persecuting Jews during the Holocaust. On March 24, 1944 President Roosevelt had to officially warn Hungary to refrain from anti-Jewish measures.
http://www.us-israel.org/jsource/vjw/Hungary.html# The%20Holocaust
"Of the original 825,000 Jews before the war, 260,000 Hungarian Jews survived and 565,000 perished."
This is about one tenth of the victims killed during the Holocaust.
564,500 Jews were sent to the various death-camps run by the Nazis. 438,000 Jews were deported from Hungary to Auschwitz alone.

Re:Even Donald Rumsfeld.....The term "Anti-Sionist" needs some definition. In many circles, the term "Zionist" merely indicates a belief that Israel should be allowed to exist.
Nowadays, Zionism is understood as "all of Palestine should belong to Israel". Because 1) Israel already exists and always will (a few atomic bombs are there to ensure this), 2) it is this form of Zionism is the initial official program of Likud: " Self-Rule:
The Government of Israel flatly rejects the establishment of a Palestinian Arab state west of the Jordan river[...]
The Jordan River as a Permanent Border:
The Jordan Valley and the territories that dominate it shall be under Israeli sovereignty. The Jordan river will be the permanent eastern border of the State of Israel. The Kingdom of Jordan is a desirable partner in the permanent status arrangement between Israel and the Palestinians in matters that will be agreed upon. "This was illustrated by the vote in 2002 by the Likud, against Sharon will, of the "refusal to accept any Palestinian state".
Anti-Zionists support the Palestinian thug-ocracy, and by extension, their desire to eliminate Israel altogether by whatever murderous and terroristic means necessary
No, anti-zionits simply said go back to 1967-borders, sometimes even to 1947 borders, and that Israel isn't entitled to more. They denounce settlements.
An anti-Zionist assigns moral equivalence between the tactics of the IDF and Hizbollah.
Indeed there is moral equivalence between the implicit wish to drive all Palestinians out of Palestine, and fund the Great Israel, and the Hizbollah. Ethnic cleansing, at the heart of settlement and annexation plans when implemented. Sometimes of course, Zionists will settle for gaining only half of Palestinian territory, or, when they don't support ethnic cleansing (by moving all Palestinians to Jordan) for an appartheid state, where arab citizen will be have only limited rights so that they don't "threaten Israel existence or safety", which obviously can only mean limited/no rights to vote or be elected.
I'm missing the fundamental difference between anti-semitism and anti-zionism.
Yes you are.

The SherriffHaving lived in Phoenix this doesn't supprise me one bit. The County Jail is a fun place called "Tent City" - some acrage in the desert full of tents and surrounded by chain-link fence and razor wire. Thats where the chaingangs and pink undies are located.
I remember a few years back I went to the Xmas parade and Joe Arpao was the grand marshal. He road ontop of the 6-wheeled assualt vehicle the sherrif's dept. owns sporting a santa hat.The guy seems to enjoy anything that causes the maximum amount of controversy.
It shouldn't take very long for anyone living in Phoenix to realize that this joker is some kind of low-rent Goebbels
It looks more and more like the shit-storm is coming.

Re:Hmm... weren't the Lutherans Nazi cheerleaders? From the Jewish Virtual Library
:"Martin Niemoeller was a Protestant pastor born January 14, 1892, in Lippstadt, Westphalia. He was a submarine commander in World War I. He was anti-communist and initially supported the Nazis until the church was made subordinate to state authority.
In 1934, he started the Pastors' Emergency League to defend the church. Hitler became angered by Niemoeller's rebellious sermons and popularity and had him arrested on July 1, 1937. He was tried the following year and sentenced to seven months in prison and fined.
After his release, Hitler ordered him arrested again. he spent the next seven years in concentration camps in "protective custody." He was liberated in 1945 and was elected President of the Protestant church in Hesse and Nassau in 1947. He held the title until 1964. He was also a President of the World Council of Churches in the 1960's.
Niemoeller was a pacifist who spoke out against nuclear weapons. He is best known for his powerful statement about the failure of Germans to speak out against the Nazis:
"First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists, but I was neither, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me."
He died in Wiesbaden on March 6, 1984. "

Re:From the articleCommunism proposes that voluntary association (i.e. free trade) among human beings is evil, primative, barbaric, immoral, and counter-productive to the "needs" of "society". The theory proposes that if human beings were FORCED to "contribute" to a common goal, society will benefit as a whole, and inequality would be non-existent
Bzzzz. That's 100% wrong. What you describe is not communism, although it fits Stalinism and some variants of Marxism. Communism asserts that people would be delighted to work for the common goal of all and it would be all joy and hapinness, but of course this plan is prevented by the pesky Capitalisms who are controlling the world (replace "Communism" with "free software" in the previous sentence, and you'll be enlightened). Also try look up for Kibbutz for instance.

Re:That's right
Here's a nice detailed record of resolutions that have been unilaterally vetoed by the United States.
Of course, one could argue that the problem lies in the veto power assigned to United Nations members, and in that regard it is partially the UN's fault. -
Re:I have to admitWhat does US foreign military aid have anything to do with this? Lenslet is a privately held company and has nothing to do with US funds.
But since the subject was raised.. Ahh, WRMEA. A website dedicated to "balanced and accurate information concerning U.S. relations with Middle Eastern states". Funny how their home page has a live counter (!) of dollars given to Israel, but no corresponding counter showing how many dollars are given to Egypt, Jordan, or whatever. And they do get a lot of money. They also don't mention that about 3/4 of the money Israel gets can only be spent in the US - which means the money goes right back to where it came from, creating jobs for Americans. Here is a link that presents the Israeli side of things. Actually I think that whole site is a worthwhile read, if you're curious to hear the Israeli side of the conflict.

Re: Arbeit macht frei
Check out the Auschwitz Orchestra You the palestinians are given that much freedom?
-
Re:win/win
My question: why must one side lose and the other win? Why don't the Israelis and the Palestinians work together and create a secular democratic government? Jews and Arabs can work and live side by side. This is a win/win situation! Let economic freedom and inter-dependencies foster peace.
That is the conclusion "leftist" intellectuals like Eqbal Ahmad and Edward Said eventually reached. However, you have to understand that if Israel becomes a multiethnic pluralistic democracy, it is no longer Israel. Zionism is predicated on Jewish sovereignty. Israel without Zionism is a tough sell to Israelis (because it eventually means Palestine).
Conversely, the single state solution requires Palestinians accept their disenfranchisement. When the UN partitioned Palestine, Jews comprised about 31% of the population and owned 7% of the land. The plan awarded them more than half the country, and the 1948 war and expulsions disenfranchised hundreds of thousands more Palestinians. When Ahmad and Said began preaching the single state solution, it was blasphemous to mainstream Palestinian nationalists. Now the Palestinian body politic is more receptive to such a message. But the same weariness which created this spirit of compromise has empowered a competing religious radicalism which doesn't know the concept of compromise and will actively disrupt any hint of it.
Is it hopeless? Yes and no. The reality is a single state solution is all but inevitable. Israel's Jewish population is shrinking and its Palestinian population (Muslim, Christian and Druze) is growing. If you count non-Israeli citizens in the occupied territories, Palestinians under Israeli rule will soon outnumber Jews. While the current administration envisions a South African style minority rule surrounded by Palestinian Bantustans, such a model is not sustainable. In the long run it will suffer the same fate as South Africa: pluralistic multiethnic democracy.
". . . Let us not today fling accusation at the murderers. What causehave we to complain about their fierce hatred to us? For eight years now, they sit in their refugee camps in Gaza, and before their eyes we TURN into our homestead the land and villages in which they and their forefathers have lived. We should demand his blood not from the [Palestinian] Arabs of Gaza but from ourselves. . . . Let us make our reckoning today. We are a generation of settlers, and without the steel helmet and gun barrel, we shall not be able to plant a tree or build a house. . . . Let us not be afraid to see the hatred the accompanies and consumes the lives of hundreds of thousands of [Palestinian] Arabs who sit all around us and wait the moment when their hand will be able to reach our blood."
-Moshe Dayan, eulogizing a settler killed by a Palestinian in 1969- -
Too Bad
Too bad there's historically no such thing as "Palistinians," and has never been a soveriegn nation called "Palistine."
Too bad that the Six Day War didn't go the way you think it should have. Since when does regions conquered in wartime count as "stolen?" It was won, fair and square.
Too bad nobody realizes that there will never be peace in the Middle East until one side wins. Whom ar you rooting for? -
Re:And how exactly do POWs held without a trialHow do you define POW? What war? My understanding is that these terms are defined case by case by the US government. The times when wars started by declaration and ended by a treaty unfortunately seem to be over.
Regarding your second point: my primary sources are personal US contacts, US newspapers (e.g. Washington Post), US news sites (e.g. CNN), and US community web sites (e.g. Slashdot). If anything, I am not a consumer but an agent of European anti-present-US-politics propaganda.
Finally, I find Martin Niemoller's famous quote fitting:
"First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists, but I was neither, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me."
My point is not that one should not bring terrorists to justice, but that it cannot be ignored or tolerated when certain groups are deprived of basic rights and legal guarantees.

Re:And?!?
'Socialism' - GNU, Linux, FreeBSD, Dragon CPU, Socialism could actually be a Good Thing.
Hahaha... christ, this is such a troll that I can feel the hook biting at my lip. You want want a fair comparison?
Capitalism:
Enron, Microsoft, SCO, **AA
Socialism:
Gulag, Concentration Camps (then and now), etc
Don't so fast to dismiss capitalism, it's not a perfect system, but it beats socialism by a head. Why? Socialism goes against human nature and evolution. It supports the weakest while hurting the strongest, it assumes what everyone wants to work the same by giving them the same rewards.
The problem with capitalism isn't when it's capitalism, it's when it starts to resemble socialism. Enron happened because people lied, cheated and had their asses covered by friends in government. The **AAs function so well because they pass anticompetition laws through the house.
Microsoft functions well because it makes (and has made) a decent product. This'll probably get me modded down to the basement, but it's the truth. Why was Windows 95 so successful? It had no real competition, now it has competition and it's getting better and better.
Linux isn't about socialism, it's capitalism in it's finest form. It's people doing what they consider best for them to get ahead. For a lot of companies it's about lowering costs, for most of the home grown developers it's about working with others to advance their skills, get themselves a better tool and get bragging rights. What's socialist about that? -
US Double Standards...
I know that someone who considers this "patriotic" is going to mod this down as flamebait but it has to be said: the double standards portrayed by the US are what makes it so unpopular beyond its borders. What double standards you say? Well, let me give you a few examples:
1. When France or Russia want to use their UN Security Council veto then it's treasonous. When the US uses its veto then it's OK.
The number of UN resolutions that the US has vetoed over Israel alone is astonishing. In most cases, the US was the only country standing in the way of a unanymous resolution and it was only its veto that scuppered each vote.
2. When the US interferes in Iraq it's OK, when anyone else does the it's not.
Get this quote:
"I think all foreigners should stop interfering in the internal affairs of Iraq."
Want to know who said that and when? Well it was Paul Wofiwitz, US Deputy Secretary of Defense, only last week. Now either he's been hiding in a cave with Osama for the last nine months or he's the one American dumber than Dubya because, as far as the internal affairs of Iraq are concerned, the US is a foreigner too!
3. When an Arab TV stations shows pictures of dead US and British troops it's disgusting. When pictures of Saddam Hussein's two sons are plastered all over the world's press, then it's perfectly fine.
If you want to trot out the line that the people of Iraq needed proof then please explain to me why the same reason/excuse can't be used by others seeking to provide proof of US/UK casualties.
4. Whatever the opponents of the war say is just a pack of lies, whatever the US/UK says is 100 percent honest.
Gee, where do I start with this one? The 45 minute threat assessment? The nuclear materials from Niger? The "saving" of Private Jessica Lynch? The evidence of WMD stockpiles that has suddenly become evidence of WMD programmes?
Since when was having a plan to make something the same as actually having it? Is that how it works? Because if it does then I'm a billionaire - hey, I've got a programme to become a billionaire and it's the same thing right?
This latest DoD gaffe is another example of hypocrisy - if a Muslim nation was to start making predictions about attacks on key US targets how well do you think that sort of "risk analysis" would be taken stateside? -
Re:Its amazing
It is amazing what PR can do.
Oddly enough, the best way to defeat terrorism is to solve the grievances of the terrorists.
You must be kidding. Their grievance is the existence of Jews. Their hatred is indoctrinated and not born of valid complaint. If you doubt this, read some palestinian text books or watch some palestinian tv... especially the children's shows. There are aspects of it that are as close to evil as I have yet seen.
Why should the palestineans suffer because Europeans feel guilty about mistreating the Jews, for example? Creating a new palestinean state is the best way to end the Infantadia.
Ah... is that what started the Intifada?
You think anti-semetism is limited to Europeans (e.g. during WW2)? Arabs were involved as well... in fact Hitler enlisted their help.
More interestingly, do you know the boundaries of the original british mandated palestine? (note palestine was never a country unto itself). Only a small fraction of it is actually Israel... the majority of the land was taken by Jordan (called Trans-Jordan). Jordan currently has "refugees" as well which they refuse to incorporate... in fact, that's where many of them were (e.g. Arafat) before trying to take over Israel. So why do you think Israel is the focus of the new Palestinian state? Why do we never hear of all these other palestinian refugees? Why can Jordan defend itself agains these palestinian terrorists, but not Israel? Why has the entire Arab world focused upon Israel rather than incorporating these poor refugees?
Also, keep in mind that the residents who remained after the attacks on Israel became citizens of Israel.
An even better way would be a semi-secular, ethnicity-blind Israel.
While I think that is a generally reasonable goal, when faced with extremists who want to destroy an entire race, it seems reasonable to take steps to specifically protect that race. -
Re:One reason why we need to absolve money
Perhaps a micro-socialist system could be implemented for those who are out of a job? To give them a job within a co-op, where they can create their own jobs, train themselves from the resources made available; a safety net for the unemployed, at almost no cost to the government.
It's called a kibbutz, and they're working quite well in Israel.

Re:I hate to say...
Ford's anti-Semetic work was called The International Jew. The Eternal Jew was published by the Nazi Party.

Re:wow islamofascist propagandist.
Look at castro helping krushev put nuclear missles and chiding krushev to pre-emptively start a nuclear war against the west. (Letters from Castro to Krushev showing this are avaiable.) Look who is friendly with Castro now, your Islamofascists pals in the M.E.
I dont know if have a fucking clue about right and wrong, and by no means is anyone hands clean, but perhaps you little shits like the Soviets and them invading afghanistan, etc? Perhaps we should have let them run amok. If I dont remember, the Soviets were far less tolerant of your little cult religion than the west is.
You are a young, twisted little kid. Go live in an Islamic hellhole, Islamofascist. (I like that picture of the Grand Mufti of Palestine begging Hitler to let him in on the Third Reich)
Grand Mufti of Jerusalem Haj Amin el-Husseini admiring German troops
The Mufti offered Hitler his "thanks for the sympathy which he had always shown for the Arab and especially Palestinian cause, and to which he had given clear expression in his public speeches....The Arabs were Germany's natural friends because they had the same enemies as had Germany" -
Flouting international law
An occupying power that respects their international treaty obligations simply cannot rewrite laws like this. See The Geneva Convention.
Art. 64. The penal laws of the occupied territory shall remain in force, with the exception that they may be repealed or suspended by the Occupying Power in cases where they constitute a threat to its security or an obstacle to the application of the present Convention.
Subject to the latter consideration and to the necessity for ensuring the effective administration of justice, the tribunals of the occupied territory shall continue to function in respect of all offences covered by the said laws.
The Occupying Power may, however, subject the population of the occupied territory to provisions which are essential to enable the Occupying Power to fulfil its obligations under the present Convention, to maintain the orderly government of the territory, and to ensure the security of the Occupying Power, of the members and property of the occupying forces or administration, and likewise of the establishments and lines of communication used by them.
I highly doubt intellectual property law is:
essential to enable the Occupying Power to fulfil its obligations under the present Convention, to maintain the orderly government of the territory, and to ensure the security of the Occupying Power, of the members and property of the occupying forces or administration, and likewise of the establishments and lines of communication used by them.
Unless the RIAA itself is administrating the occupation.

Re:Disappeared? Really?Naturally, the common people don't want war, but after all, it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag people along whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.
-- Reich-Marshall Herman Goering.
A friend in Germany sent me that.

Sick, Sick.
The Gestapo were the Nazi secret police who particpated in the death of nearly 6 million people. To trivialize this by equating it to rounding up of thiefs shows a real warped sense of perspective on your part.

Finally they did it!
I wanted them to decide if they want to attack Iraq or not. The anticipation was killing me, and finally they are doing it! I hope they find Saddam and spank him like they should.
Seems that Kuwait isn't equipped with the Arrow missile, because 3 Iraqi missiles have already exploded in Kuwait near the border (with no casualties or damage, though), just like in the start of the previous gulf war.
Btw: I am looking for a girlfriend. -
Re:What about the Israeli guy?
Yes he has a degree so fucking what. Every damned officer has a degree. Did he do any actual work as a scientist? No he just killed people for a living.
here is a page from a pro israeli web site about his accomplishments. I'll summarize them for you. He knew how to fly military airplanes, he dropped bombs on people. There ya go.
BTW thanks for the link I'd never been there before.

DRM seems strikingly familiar ...... to a way to identify yourself legally to the one's in charge.
Please don't mod this +1 funny, as it's not meant to be that way. I really do find strinkingly large simularities between the way the Nazi's do things and the way certain members of congress try to force the people that elected them to give up their rights. Just because "Rights" is one of the DRM words, doesn't make it right.
I believe in Law that is for the people.

Re:man o manAccording to the Law of Return, Israel defines: "'Jew' means a person who was born of a Jewish mother or has become converted to Judaism and who is not a member of another religion."
While the Law of Return grants rights to non-Jewish children, grandchildren, and spouses of Jews, they are not automatically defined as Jews (from what I can tell). I'm not sure if your mother's mother's mother was a Jew that you would be classified as Jewish.

Instead of a central repository, carry it with youSed quis custodiet ipsos custodes? It doesn't matter where the data are; if they're on a central server, they're at risk -- all it takes is some disaffected sysadmin type or his boss or an FBI/NKVD/Gestapo type, and your personal details are public.
I carry all my logins etc. in my PalmOS device, encrypted in a Blowfish-protected database, and synched to my personal computer when I'm back in the office. I have to enter one decent password to get at my data, and if I lose the PDA I suppose someone could crack it if they *_really_* wanted to, but at least I know the data are NOT on a Microsoft/Sun/Liberty Alliance box where some disaffected BOFH can get to it.
YMMV.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer "Worlds Richest Jew"
I don't think it's likely that Microsoft is anti-Semitic, especially considering their CEO is the world's richest Jew. :-) -
Re:In other news...I believe the "expensive tech" is meant generally to all UNIXes and maybe more specific to FreeBSD than the proprietary ones.
But I don't get it why people don't get it as to why this is such a horrendous faux pax. Let me try to make an over-the-top comparison:
- 1935 Olympics. Germany. Aryan Supremacy:
- "Germany skillfully promoted the Olympics with colorful posters and magazine spreads. Athletic imagery drew a link between Nazi Germany and ancient Greece. These portrayals symbolized the Nazi racial myth that superior German civilization was the rightful heir of an "Aryan" culture of classical antiquity. The Nazis reduced their vision of classical antiquity to ideal "Aryan" racial types: heroic, blue-eyed blonds with finely-chiseled features."

Re:even-handed
I thought I would reply to my post before someone points out that the Dead Sea Scrolls go farther back than the middle ages. I meant that oldest complete Torah ms. dates from the middle ages, or 1009 to be exact.

The US could prohibit co-operation on censorshipThe US could, by legislation, prohibit U.S. companies from assisting with censorship in selected countries. There's an analogy to the Arab boycott of Israel, which led to lobbying by Israel for U.S. laws prohibiting American companies from cooperating with the Arab boycott.
There's an opportunity for a left-right coalition in the U.S. on this. The Right doesn't like China because they're Commies, and the Left doesn't like censorship.
