Want Anime Network on Your Cable System?
ccnull writes "The Anime Network has launched a "tell your cable company to carry this station!" campaign on its web site. Just enter your ZIP code at the top of the site's home page (it looks like a banner ad) and you'll be that much closer to Samurai X 24/7. In case you hadn't heard, the network launched in late 2002." No support via DirecTV. I filled out the form already- I crave this channel.
GOD FUCKING DAMN IT! I lost another loan to Ditech :

My arm is all twitchy. Wonder why. Wonder Bread. Wonder Woman. Wonder why finding light brown shoe polish is SO DAMN HARD IT MAKES ME CRY these days.

Why have the English adopted Asian-style smileys? ^-^ o_0 -_- ? What kind of moisturizer does michael use to kepe his hands so soft and smooth? Please let me know kthx.
HELLO? BUDDY? SIR? MON FREER... I said, MON FREER!
I have no interest of having this on my cable system.
Is Invader Zim anime?
:)
Probably not. Ah well. I don't really watch any anime, except maybe Samurai Pizza Cats, so I won't be demanding anime network locally.
Someone correct me here, but I think the amount of geeks that love anime are about as equal to the amount of geeks that enjoy sports. Why doesn't slashdot support some form of sports (maybe subsection, only)??
Good quote, too many chars. Seriously, the slashdot 120 char limit sucks!
please don't add yet another worthless channel to my cable service petition.
fuck taco
that's the real question.
Do we really want samurai x on tv 24/7?
I Finally
got teh first post!!!!
and as we all know dubbing is evil.

If you answer "Yes" to this, you also answer "No" to ever having sex with a real girl the rest of your life.
it's Kenshin, you insensitive clod!
Too bad they're limiting what they show to those properties they own the rights to. Or at least, that's what I thought I read somewhere recently. And that would also explain why their offerings are somewhat limited.
Surely this is marginal stuff that should go in the Anime sub-topic. Taco - give it a rest. No one gives a flying fuck about Anime.
No, not really.
Duct tape is like the Force. It has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the universe together.
But after I entered my Zip code, it gave the error "Not located: XXXXX"(XXXXX was a real zip code)
Maybe I can do a write in for Orbitel.
I really hate Dan Patrick.
Why do I enter my zip code to be taken to a form that correctly picks my cable company, only to ask what town and zip code I live at...?
Jesus fucking Christ. Literally. This extremely blasphemous dildo features a fairly realistic dickhead at the tip, and a crucifix complete with a figure of our crucified Lord at the base. A very hefty dildo with lots of ridges and bulges, it's perfect for playing debauched priest, naughty nun, or re-enacting The Exorcist. The Blowfishies are all convinced that we're going straight to hell for carrying this toy; if you want to join us on the trip, we can't think of a better way than buying one for yourself. 10" total length (7-1/4" insertable length), 1-1/2" in diameter at the head, 1-3/4" in diameter at the widest insertable point (Jesus's knees). Do note that the shape of this dildo means it can't be used with a harness. Glow-in-the-Dark White (a pearlescent white).
Apparently my zip code is too long for their banner thingy...
You can't take the sky from me...
Then I remembered I can block anime stories in my preferences. AND, as a bonus, I can take advantage of this diversion and block michael's "stories". Come to think of it, he's my enemy now. Nothing to do with this story, just thought I'd do it, you know, while I'm there.
I'd like to thank Cmdr Taco for posting this non-news and making me do something about the amount of crap "news" making their way to slashdot's front page. THANK YOU TACO!
Mother is the best bet and don't let Satan draw you too fast.
And if I wanted to watch anime (which I don't), I'd go to the noid.
If you are over the age of 21 and get exited over male cartoon characters that look like 12 year old girls with purple hair, you need to kill yourself.
I wish we could get it but our cable company is too busy restructuring than getting new channels and stuff. This sucks a lot, I have to steal TechTV from a friend of mine with a pc and cable internet (luckily we get that from them....) It's a sad life under adelphia. Give me a satilite any day if it were for having a fast internet connection.

i don't want the anime network.
that pansy-ass crap that passes for anime nowadays pretty much makes me happy that the old animes of my youth are long forgotten. i'd rather not see their corpses reanimated (it's a pun, c'mon, it's funny) with bad english dubbing and their characters on tshirts for all the pimply faced 15 year olds to wear.
i am at stage 5 on the fandom cycle (reproduced in reply for your pleasure) and would rather everyone just go away.
project a-ko, this one's for you!
I would have rather Turner had spun off all of their anime and "edgey" shows into a Toonami network. It could have been a nice mix of stuff like the Adult Swim line up with hardcore anime shows mixed in. Anime is good, if taken in moderation.
Take your filthy tentacle-rape comics and get the fuck off my internet. disgusting kiddie-fiddlers.
You've been to the LAN party, you know the funk that gets emmited. This would help greatly in this area.
At least you'll get to see it. If you really like it and want it subbed you can buy it on DVD! The problem I have with Anime is that no one I know locally watches it and the local video stores think that Anime begins and ends with Dragonball Z (though Spirited Away has made a dent in their flat heads). I don't know which Anime I like and which I don't.

In fact, I try lobbing for a 24h mathematics channel, but I hadn't much success up to now.
If the slashdot crowd would willing to help me we might get and entertaining and intelligent TV channel all over the world in some time.
This would be much better than these childish TV comics which cripple your ability to read a decent book.

Sorry not gonna buy into this - 1 reason DUBBED
Maybe i'm a snob, maybe I just have a thing against nails grinding on a chaulkboard - but I can not stand dubbs of anime. English voice actors (for the 99% most part) are TERRIBLE and make the anime totally unwatchable for me. If they were to offer the anime subtitled however - then I would be willing to support them - until then - they can burn in hell for all I care.
Ave Molech Setting
For those of you who are less informed Anime fans, the 'Samurai X' referred to in the body of this post was originally titled Rourouni Kenshin.
Bad name for a good show. Bad dub, no doubt. I still cringe when I hear what the west did to Carcaptor Sakura....

Traitors!!!! all of you so called geeks who diss anime should be ashamed, and screw sports! yes this is a rant, it's my rant damnit! I would pay oodles for this channel and wtf is wrong with taco posting something he thinks is cool? somewhere you people lost the fact he is the founder of this site... i'm so sick of all of your complaints so what if they post dupes? can't you guys forgive a simple mistake... Going back to the topic this is "News for NERDS!!" if you want sports go to espn, this is a place for the things that we nerds value most, like hot anime chicks that don't wear many clothes and far off worlds that we can only dream about... *puts on his flame shield* and i love you kenshin!! :X :X
If anime originated in the USA, would it still be considered "cool"?
Somehow I doubt it.

Spend some time doing your wife instead of watching cartoons, eh? If you don't know how to "do" your wife, well, I won't show you but I'll show her and maybe she'll teach you. She'll be disappointed with you, of course, but she'll learn to make do.
And yes, I'm no coward...I'm posting using my nick. I've designated one day per week as "karma burn" day and guess what, today is it!
As a Canadian I must say I'm disappointed that the Anime Network hasn't a single mention of Canada... In fact I'm hurt... Now I feel I don't want the Anime network.... www.realdirect.net

I just faxed my local comcast in under 2 minutes. They should be given props for their innovative/userfriendly approach to getting their name out there. I hope it works out well for them. Then maybe State representatives can take a hint and offer a web-based faxable feedback form also :)
The Surgeon General says sigs are bad for me.
Just as the hordes of anime fans on Slashdot have no interest in hearing about others' disinterest in anime. And yet so many like you are going to post to this thread saying how they don't care because they don't like anime. What's the point?
I have several theme movie channels (Westerns, Mystery, Love Stories, Action, True Stories) and they are generally not as good as expected. Why? Because they can't get the rights to all "good" movies (since they are in high demand and thus expensive). Mystery shows The Avengers on weekdays but other than that is about two Columbo movies away from being Lifetime. I saw Predator on Action... quickly followed by The Fast and the Furious.
Everyone seems to think "Yeah a channel that was purely __________ would rock! I'd so watch it all the time!" Sorry but it wouldn't be Akira followed by Princess Mononoke. More likely "What the hell is this?" then "God... this really sucks." Unless someone feels like throwing millions of dollars into a moneypit, I fear this will disappoint.
The only pure channel I could see enjoying would be a kung-fu movie channel. Why? Because the unintentional comedy runs high in those films. The cheaper/worse the movie usually the more people like it. Of course there is a fine artistry to The Five Deadly Venoms and Shaolin Master Killer but anybody can enjoy the endless kick-to-the-genitals jokes and bad dubbing.

I have no interest in watching a fat, stupid, Marilyn-wannabe parade around whining, wasting away her dead sugardaddy's money...but you don't see me bitchin' about getting E!, now do you? I hate rap/hip-hop/most of the crap on MTV. The Home Channel bores me to death. Travel channel- eh. The ABC/Disney "family" channels make me want to puke within 5 seconds of accidentally switching to them. Don't get me started about the tractor pulls and Shooter's World on OLN.
That's why smart people invented a feature that lets you delete/add channels from your TV's set of channels it scans through when you hit up/down.
That's also why you pay specificially for some channels(gasp! What a concept!) If you don't want the Anime channel, then don't bubmit your zip code, don't effin' buy it...and if it comes with the standard package(highly unlikely), deprogram it from your TV...kay?
Please help metamoderate.
Just post more football stories & you'll get progressively more comments.
Seriously. TV has these two interesting features, CLOSED CAPTIONS and SECONDARY AUDIO PROGRAMMING.
Why the hell can't they show anime with the original japanese soundtrack on the SAP channel? Then I could just set my TV to SAP and turn on the english closed caption channel. Instant subtitles for anyone who can't stand the horrible dubbing.
If people would wake up and realize most anime fans hate dubs maybe I'd consider getting this channel or watching the crap that's on now.
Introducing the new Occam Fusion! Now with sqrt(-1) fewer blades!
I don't have a TV connection but I'd consider getting one if I could watch anime in Japanese with subtitles. However there's no way that's ever going to happen so I'm sticking to downloading off Kazaa... I mean, uh, purchasing 30-min DVDs from the Viz Video online store @ $55 USD each... yeah that's it.

There's this wonderful invention called the remote control. And if your TV is advanced enough, you can program the channels out. Wow, what a concept.
Having an anime channel available doesn't hurt anybody. It's better than the stupid home shopping and golf channels.
But it's only abvailable on the internet on some channel called Kazaa. I forget which station that is, but they play really cool stuff!
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It's just that yours is stupid.
Of all the stuff that gets exported to the rest of the world from Japan, Anime has to be the very worst. I find it so amazing that such absolute crap is produced by a culture so rich and sophisticated. Here this: Anime is CRAP. I cannot understand how anyone with even a scintilla of intelligence can bear to watch such boring, poorly written drivel.
It's just badly animated cartoons. In short, a bunch of crap.
"Want Anime Network on Your Cable System?"
My answer is no. Is that hard to understand?
I'll call you, when I'm in the mood to beg for television channels.
*guffaw*
Get a life!
Nah, I won't be requesting this. The channel sounds cool and all, but my cable bill is already high enough as it is.
If added on Comcast, they would then likely raise rates way in excess of what the channel actually costs them; worse Comcast in our area would likely have to remove another channel to make room for this one.
On an aside, some friends say I should consider getting a dish, but there isn't much competition there either, and it's not the bargain it once was when one adds in all the "extra" charges to get local channels, niche channels, extra boxes, etc - plus the phone line aspect bothers me...surely the dish companies could upload data via ground-based wireless networks where available and eliminate the phone line requirement for folks in those areas.
will this allow me to get that anime show where they chop the bound, gagged, and crying female cartoon into little pieces and shove her in a suitcase?
or what about the one where they take the bound and gagged cartoon, cut her up, and eat her with chopsticks as she cries out..
gotta love the anime.
So I'm to believe that if I go and commit my zip code on their server that I'm one step closer to getting tentacle porn movies shown 24/7 in my hometown? Dream on, guys
I want to pick and choose the channels we actually want, rather than get all the shit we have now. I don't want the fucking Golf channel, I don't want AMC; but I do want MTV2 and some "real" porn channels. Can I get that choice? No, because my cable company sucks ass! Petition all you like about getting your Anime, but in the end you'll still be paying too much for too little.
I vote for Cable reform!
Aiyeeeee! Hide your snack foods, your soft drinks, the television zombies have been summoned! Bring out your dead!
we need a 24/7 japscat channel..
especially the show where they give the woman an egg enema and have her straddle over a giant griddle...
Multichannel TV? Hah! Five is at least one too many...
Real Daleks don't climb stairs - they level the building.
Here this? Better grammar check your posts before commenting about others' poorly written drivel.
You know, some geeks smoke pot. Given the insanity-to-reality ratio of your post, well... makes me wonder if pot wouldn't a minor plus in your life. :)
C'mon. Be thoroughly interested in how your left hand twitches that certain way when you get pissed off. ;) Before you know it you won't realize just what you were pissed off about. :)
Especially Beavis and Butthead.
Ren and Stimpy was cool the first year, but after Space Madness came out everything that followed was lame in comparison.
South Park is pretty cool too, but very inconsistent.
What???? You're talking about that Japanese crap??? Maybe if there were 10,000 free channels it would be worth wasting one on that drivel, but until then keep it off my system! Not worth the raise in rates or losing another channel to make room for it.
My motto is: Never give up - unless it's harder than you want it to be.
I hope this (is it?) is owned by Cartoon Network. So they can take all that shitty anime crap that's meant for japanese 12 year olds out of "adult swim".
I'd much rather watch ATHF or SeaLab 2021 than this Trigun crap. They could air anything in its place... Oblongs, Family Guy, Home Movies, Ripping Friends, even Dexters Lab or Johnny Bravo. Hell, air some old Gi Joe episodes.
This badly dubbed anime crap has to go. It's not "adult".
I don't need no instructions to know how to rock!!!!
Was I the only person who saw this as a reference to Rick Moranis (as Vince Clortho, Keymaster of Gozer) in Ghostbusters? I am such a dork.
Aren't you dead?
I do. Yum, yum, cookie!
I *loved* that show. Unfortunately, I don't remember much about it. Something to do with the destructive nature of alcohol on brain cells, apparently...
I have a serious question - and I'm not trying to flamebait here, I just honestly don't "get" anime. I mean, do you have to get hooked on anime when you're young or something? Maybe I was watching shitty anime... it just really struck me as... well... stupid (apologies to fans - i'm not raggin' on your tastes - i'm just being honest about how i see it - specifically I've sampled a couple anime movies that we're supposed to be really good: akira and princess mononoke). Do you have to approach it differently than other movies/shows to appreciate it? If so, how? If on drugs, which ones? :-P
Seeing one or two animes and declaring it all crap is comparable to seeing an ep of "Married with Children" and an ep of "Survivor" and calling American TV crap.
Go to high school and learn about statisics (sample size here) and logic.
Baka.
Anime is low-framerate, melodramatic, misogynistic garbage. Every anime movie I've seen - and I've seen a few, thanks to my "friends" - falls into this category. The animation of anything that's supposed to be moving quickly is laughably bad, the dialogue is just dumb and juvenile, and there is always - ALWAYS - a shot of a tied-up chick being either terrorised or mutilated, usually with a shot up her skirt thrown in. How can anyone be addicted to this stuff?
No, but the frame rate would rise above 10fps for the entire movie.
The real story is not that Anime is breaking mainstream, but 'Video On Demand' is Breaking mainstream. This channel is a V.O.D. Cable companies are sliding around the age old network/ad revenue streams and starting to except new models, at least for cliques. Unlike the RIAA and MPAA they aren't killing their businesses by refusing to provide customers with the content delivery systems they crave. Sure, It's on the edge where they're not hitting traditional streams, but then again Linux isn't competing head to head with Windows until it soften them up either. There me be hope for the world after all.
I wanted to spend a few points in this discussion, but in this case it look so useless, that I'd rather loose them...
it's a legit question.
why do people like anime?
I love you.
But is it Edited/Censored? If it is, then it's no better than what Cartoon Network does and I don't want it.
Do not read this
Who the hell in their right mind would actually create a show dealing with a small SUV-like product from Japanese automaker Suzuki?
Watch "Grave of the Fireflies".
Then tell me all anime is crap.
I'll still think you're wrong but at least I'll assume it's something with your brain instead of your being uneducated.
Trolling-putting a rubber c0ck down your pants and cutting it off with a chainsaw: noisy and it makes you look d1ckless
Anime has gotten so popular in the USA that it's here to stay. It's already mainstream ("RTFA" as they say). You just haven't realized it yet.
Ive already seen everything there going to be showing thats new almost a year ago. Some of there other shows have been out even longer.
Of all the topics on Slashdot, anime seems to get the worst rap. The most common diss is that it's a "crappy cartoon". This is as unreasonable as saying "Windows is a stable OS"
Anime is more than just a crappy cartoon. You want a crappy cartoon, watch the disney channel sometime in the afternoon. Yes, some anime is bad, in fact, a lot of it is. Come to think of it, there are lots of crappy TV shows (reality tv anyone?) and crappy movies (fast and furious anyone?). With any genre, there comes the good and the bad.
One of the best anime review sites on the web If you take a look at rankings of most anime shown on american tv (cartoon network, most notably), you will notice that MOST of them are only in the 50 - 80 % range. The anime shown during the "adult swim" of cartoon network have a much higher average. I'll bet most of you anime dissers are judging the whole of a genre based on the anime with the lowest averages **cough**Dragonball Z**cough**.
It'd be like me saying that all sci-fi movies are as bad as "This Island Earth".(Neglecting the fact that it is SO bad that it's funny)
Broaden your spectrum, all ye naysayers. Either that, or stop posting under the anime topics. You're ruining it for those of us with an appreciation for the art.
(And I would request the channel, but I'm stuck on DirecTV)
(Yes, I would rather have subs. But dubs will do till they realize that I'd pay more for subs)
Uh..no. I don't this taking up precious bandwith at my CMTS.
**cough** anime sucks **cough**
Ahem. Anime is the only thing I have ever seen that qualifies as being MORE fucked up than Michael Jackson's face.
Good God why would you watch that crap? You! I'm talking to YOU!
or friends with better taste.
They have Comcast listed, but they don't have Millenium Digital Media listed! COME ON! Hook up with some of the good cable companies!

Sure, it's ADVision, but no Sailor Moon?!
:(
No use for me unless they get Sailor Moon.
-uso.
ADV has the rights to the first two seasons. I have yet, however, to see subtitled DVDs of them.
Dreams, dreams, don't doubt dreams, dreaming children's dreaming dreams. Sailor Moon SS
Folks,
We have to understand that Anime Network has just only started on its rollout!
Thank God that Comcast--who is underwriting part of the cost of the network--is the largest cable system provider in the USA (I think). At least here in the San Francisco Bay Area and in the Sacramento, CA area, due to the fact Comcast owns the cable systems, it means Anime Network will likely roll out as part of digital cable packages later this year. =)
Ahhhhhhrggghh, how it pains me when I see it called that. Sorry...
Drat! I say!
Usotsuki and I must needs Sailor Moon! Where else will we learn how to dress like virginal school-girls and nance about giggling and so forth and so on.
ADV Films has announced the first season of Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon on subtitled UNCUT DVD just within the last few weeks. It'll be out in July in a US$149.95 box package that covers all 46 episodes of the first season.
I will warn you the original uncut version is quite a bit darker and more mature in subject matter than the DiC "adaptation" released in 1995, so you might want to view it before showing it to anyone under 13 years old.
Why is there nothing modded +5 in this post yet?????
I've noticed that video games (at least the year's top-10 I tend to stick to) with voice acting manage to be quite well executed. Deus Ex and NOLF come to mind here. Why aren't they hiring these people to do anime dubs?
NO... Goddamn fucking ANIME
If I wanted anime, I'd get it from P2P.
Sorry, had to work in a hentai reference :)
Here's two best bets: check out anything by Studio Ghibli (best animation salaries in Japan) or (nearly) anything by Production I.G. (second-best animation salaries in Japan, natch). Out of those studios' output, I'd suggest FLCL (excellent 2 1/2-D animation; it's also the most [if not the only] Warner Bros./Tex Avery-styled anime I've ever seen), Spirited Away, and My Neighbor Totoro (we studied the first Catbus scene from this film in one of my animation classes).
I find that I tend to watch anime how I watch any other animation: I follow certain directors and studios. I watch Hayao Miyazaki's films just as faithfully as I do Brad Bird's.
what about canada, you insensitive monsters :)
Anime roxs...
btw I like Dragonball Z, any other similar anime to suggest ?
I have noticed that many people are complaining that since all the good anime will cost too much and thus most of the anime will suck.
Well I would be happy with that? Why? Most of us who have collections of Anime I'm sure already have the "good anime" on DVD. This leaves all the "crap" that we haven't seen or heard about. I would take my chances with seeing a rare anime that I never would have seen normally because of it's obsecure nature.
But I'm sure for most people out there they will still have an occasional good piece of anime.
I'll be happy to expand my horizons with both a bunch of crap and some good stuff which I have never seen.
So 50% of the comments will be something like "hahahahha stupid jap cartoons why is this on Slashdot", made by people who could have just turned the category off in the first place.
40% will be regarding dubs vs subs, and how American actors couldn't splutter out a few lines to save their rear ends, while Japanese seiyuu are suddenly God's gift to voicework. Hint: Just because it's in a language you don't know, does not automatically make voice acting good.
The other 10% will actually be on topic.
No.
"I say consider this day seized!" -Hobbes
"Tomorrow we'll seize the day and throttle it!" -Calvin
Once again, I need to throw in that I find english dubs to be horrible. All of them. Don't even try to tell me, "Well Cowboy Bebop was a good dub." Because it wasn't.
And that is probably what will primarily be shown (I heard that they were considering subtitled stuff LATE AT NIGHT, which doesn't do me good since I'm asleep).
Second is the fact that they probably will mainly show things I've already seen. It might sound like arrogance, but I'm currently watching Wolf's Rain, Scrapped Princess, Last Exile, and DNAngel.
If this stuff even gets onto the Anime Network, it'll probably be there 2+ years from now. There is no incentive for me to watch shows I've already seen.
Samurai X
Ah yes, another reason. The stupid anime-is-cool trend. I've watched anime since the early 90s because I LIKE it, not because it is cool and trendy. This is a stupid ploy by companies like ADV (and others) to label anime as cool and the next wave of extreme animation, and crap like that, and retitle shows like RUROUNI KENSHIN with stupid names like Samurai X because it supposedly sounds cool.
"You spoony bard!" -Tellah
Does anyone know if the anime on this channel will be edited for content? Dubbing can be pretty bad, but what's worse is when they edit the stories for content. Many times the story lines don't make as much sense and entire scenes are cut out. Sometimes entire episodes. If this becomes mainstream, I truly hope they aren't edited shows. Course, american culture would have to accept more nudity and/or blood for many shows. Guess there's not much chance of that.
KhyronI understand peoples arguements about commercialization, fandom, group think, etc. and I do agree with some of it. I never wanted to see Pokemon, Yu-gi-oh, Card Captor Sakura, or a host of other children's anime imported because I KNEW it would be dumbed down and thoroughly demolished. Most Anime is slaughtered in translation or editing for American television. For no reason other than some corporate gimps think american audiences are still composed primarily of prudes and religious fanatics. But look at daytime and primetime television and the same stuff is on there. Why? Because Anime is cartoons and cartoons are for kids! I say BS, but that's cause I am sick of turning to any given Major Network channel at random and seeing nothing but unhealthy relationships. I hate Friends. To me Rachel, Ross, and Monica exemplify the worst traits of personal relationships. I won't say this doesn't exist in Anime, but is nowhere near as prevalent. Most TV shows run by NBC, CBS, ABC, and Fox have at least 1 character in them equivalent to 1 of those I mentioned. So honestly, I do prefer cartoons to network TV. At least cartoons are entertaining. BTW, the Anime Channel is strictly a VOD (video-on-demand) service channel. They have a line-up of shows and movies that you order and can watch for a certain period of time with all the bells and whistles of a VCR or Tivo unit. You won't have to pay for the channel unless you order a show or you have Comcast (sorry, couldn't resist the dig) Anyways, I gotta run. I got laundry to do before Trigun comes on tonight!
What surprises me most is that I haven't seen any posts about the lineup. Just bitching about dubbing and ADV shows. While some of you may be upset that they're showing "A crappy dub of Kenshin that they're calling Samurai X" I say get over it. Yes, the dub sucks. What's important to me is paying a small increase on my cable bill rather than spending hundreds of dollars on DVDs just to watch a sub. Ok, the voice acting is sub par compared to the Japanese. I'll suffer through it, because the story is still there and Japanese story telling is still better than American story telling any day of the week.
Has anyone looked at the line up? Goldenboy is being shown. Goldenboy! Yeah, we've all seen it, but I've been watching the Simpsons for well over 10 years now, it's still funny, and I'll still watch it. Excell Saga? Yeah, it's popular, and yeah, it's way overdone, yeah, it still makes me laugh harder than any anime I've seen in a while. I'll watch it. Gunsmith Cats, EVA, Those Who Hunt Elves, Spriggan, Burn Up, that's some good stuff there. What's better is the fact that I don't really want to buy a lot of those series. EVA's good, and Burn Up is always good for fanservice and some laughs, but sometimes I wonder if they're worthy of watching and rewatching at the cost of $25 a DVD.
Anime's come a long way kids. Yeah, it's a trend, that blows. I miss the days of sitting around trading fansubs online at 2 AM. I guess this is where I say I'm into anime because it's different than American cartoons. Superior? In a lot of ways, yes. What's cool is it's a different cultural viewpoint. Cry all you want, I know so many of you are hardcore otaku. If that's the way it is, fine. $150 a box set is good for you, an extra couple of dollars chocked on to my cable bill every month, well, I like that more than the alternative.
This is when people start throwing money around. When people watch, more stuff will follow. It can only get better.
While this campain looks promising .. it is sort of telling that Yahoo flags the campain email as spam. .. but than again my very much opt in email notification from my long distance provider is flagged as spam.
This just in: Taco, you're a loser.
Um. The english closed caption would TRANSCRIBE the horrible dubbing, not the actual subtitles.
You do realize that an American TV signal can carry up to four caption channels, don't you? Put English dubtitles on caption 1 and the real English subtitles on caption 2, and then put Japanese audio on SAP, and you've satisfied most viewers.
Will I retire or break 10K?
I heard that they were considering subtitled stuff LATE AT NIGHT, which doesn't do me good since I'm asleep
TiVo.
Will I retire or break 10K?
nt
It's dubbed--most anime fans won't even watch this channel, much less anyone else. How can this possibly work?!?
If you are an anime fan, things are pretty good right now--readily available fansubs from IRC, newsgroups, and bittorrent sites, and most new anime eventually comes out on DVD. This is the golden age for non-Japanese-speaking anime fans--it doesn't get much better than this, folks!
Will this channel be on the cable lineup and censored or will it be something extra you can order like HBO. I really hope it's something extra you order because I sure as hell don't wanna watch some show that was obviously incredibly violent/pornographic/cursing and it be like "I am gonna blow your off you mother, I'm gonna so hard you will be sorry."
"Guns don't kill people, bullets do."
and what's with those big eyes - don't they creep you out?
The guy you're responding to is just trolling.
:/
They put out good flamebait, though, and I guess a ton of people are replying now
I wonder how many of you are actually nerds. I'm not talking about someone who likes to watch certain shows. I'm talking about a REAL nerd, someone who is into stuff like science, technology, computers, etc. Just because you're obsessed with something, doesn't mean you're a nerd. That's a geek; there is a difference. The reason I'm asking is because I'm surprised by how many anti-anime posts appear in the anime topics. I've read that nerds have a tendency to like anime. I even read a book (I think it was by Susan Napier) that even stated that most students who are into anime are ones majoring in either computer science or electrical engineering. I also read on a wbesite that there is a well deserved stereotype of anime fan being either a college student majoring in a math or science degree or an older adult who is in the high tech industry. Now I'm not trying to make you feel bad if you don't like anime. If you are a genuine nerd who doesn't like anime, fine. It just seems that anime topics get way more anti-anime posts than one would normally expect from a website that's supposed to be for nerds. An interesting aspect I've noticed is that so far every anti-anime post that I've read and that gives reasons for not liking anime tries to assert that ALL anime has a certain small list of bad characteristics and nothing more. Now I'm not trying to convert anyone to anime, but saying that ALL anime is a certain way when you haven't even seen ALL anime is just plain ignorant. There is nothing inherent anime characteristic that prevents it from being good. All an anime is is a cartoon that was made by Japanese people. Are you trying to say that it's physically impossible for someone with Japanese ethnicity to make a good cartoon simply because that person is Japanese or because the story in question is animated? That's like saying that's physically impossible for an American to make a good live action movie simply because the person is American or because the movie is live action. The point I'd like to make is that unless you've seen every single anime ever made, you cannot rightfully say that ALL anime has a certain characteristic unless it's characteristic that is a part of or logically implied by the definition of anime (that being a cartoon from Japan). Maybe most of you anime nay-sayers wouldn't be fans of anime if you saw a decent, diverse amount of anime, but there is probably AT LEAST one anime that each nay-sayer would like.
1.Be in japan and watch it there
2.Buy dvds and be ripped off by suncoast or buy the Hong Kong imports
3.What I see as the best option....download it off the net, through IRC or what is now becomming the best option, bit torrent. Check out http://www.animesuki.com for starters. It has some good current series on it.
And for all you trolls out there who don't like anime, perhaps you'd change your tune if you had seen some anime other than pokemon and tentacles.
Buy Steampunk Clothing Online!
Does this mean we can finally get the anime off Cartoon Network? Please God, let it be so!
You report, Slashdot decides
Prevueing you're poast ownly hellps iff ewe no how two spel inn teh furst plase

;-)
AL: Dude, anime rocks! Long live the anime channel!
AH: No it doesn't, it sucks! I don't want that channel, it's got cooties!
AL: Rocks! (x10)
AH: Sucks! (x10)
AL: Oh yeah, prove it!
AH: Oh yeah, prove it!
AL: Here's some statistics/anecdoatal evidence/articles that tells how cool anime is!
AH: Here's some counter statistics/anecdoatal evidence/articles telling how sucky anime is!
AL: Liar, anime rocks!
AH: Anime sux! It's for kids!
What is the big problem with some people liking anime? Seriously. Yes, some people get WAY too carried away about how great anime is, but I don't see what this big debate is about. From what i've read, it's mostly people supposing and assuming various untrue things about Japanese people and anime fans. (Kinda like how the world stereotypes 'hackerz', but anyways...)
In any case, folks, I think a woman is far more likely to be turned off by guys who rabidly debate pointless topics like this than by some guy who watches anime.
Ok anime haters, I'm going to teach you a magical trick. Log into slashdot, select preferences, and select "anime" in the "Exclude Stories" section. Wow. Slashdot no longer posts anime news!
As for me, I already submitted my petition for the anime network. Thanks Taco! =)
Jesus Christ, there hasn't been a single decent or relevant post in this entire thread!
When geekdom becomes popular, true geeks move on.
Cool, but useless.
Detected topic: Anime channel available, how to tell the company that you want it
Intended audience: local US users who can possibly receive the channel
Reached audience: WORLDWIDE DISTRIBUTION
Don't be offended, but for me this again shows (rather sadly) that for many people only their local backyard exists.
I've experienced this a number of times, e.g. if you order something at Sharp.com, and you even know someone in the US where the goods may be sent to.
Place Order -> Get Confirmation -> 2 days later: Get Cancellation Message: "You have a VISA card in a non-US country".
Ouch! Wasn't Visa intended to be accepted everywhere?
Or the many order sites where I have to enter a state, even if the country is not 'United States'.
Sometimes I wonder whether a "Globe of the U.S." award exists or such one would be appropriate. ;-)
Please accept my humble excuses if the channel is indeed available worldwide. :-)
...so far my 2 cents :-)
THINK! (the old IBM motto)
Kind regards,

Actually, that's not a legit question.
Anime is a style within a medium (animation).
Might as well ask "why do people like French cuisine?" or "why do people like impressionist oil paintings?"
I made a small change to their zip form and made a small bit of html code for people to put on their websites.
Get the code here
Let there be Bubblegum Crisis 2040 through the WORLD!
Let there be more Cowboy Bebop!
Let there be Excel Saga!
Let there be Neon Genesis Evangelion!
And let there be the final season of Sailor Moon with the Sailor Stars - SUBTITLED!
As a matter of fact, let there be three Anime Network channels - one dub, one sub, and an HDTV channel that incorporates both features!
Then don't tune to that channel. Geez. Do you complain about reading certain websites as well?
I went to the home page to sign up my ZIP code. I saw a link about "New Jersey". When I clicked on it, there was a press release that it was *already* on Comcast On Demand.
I did notice a lot of anime choices on the regular on-demand menu. It's just that we usually only watch Showtime On-Demand. P&T's Bullshit! rocks.
All true wisdom can be found in sigs.
I happen to work for a cable company. The harsh truth is that you have to pay big money to get carriage. Fox News set the mark by paying $10US per household to get on to the analog tier. Digital channels like the golf channel are paying $2-4 per household. On the flip side they may get $.10 - $2.00 in subscriber fees over the life of the contract so the net result is very profitable. Do an NPV analysis on a 7 year cash flow and you'll see what I mean. Still the barrier to entry is high and no ammount of letter writing is going to force a system operator to give away what they have always sold.
Maybe you should check out this response to my post. That poster obviously got the point you missed -- that the offerings on this would-be anime channel are quite limited, NOT that they should illegally broadcast anime shows which they don't own the rights to.
But despite the fact that they're taking a big chance here, I think they limit their overall appeal by limiting the library of titles which they'll debut with. Consumers aren't going to watch the channel at all just because it's anime, just as they wouldn't subscribe to the channel if it didn't have titles that appealed to the masses. Or at least, broadly enough to justify establishing a dedicated anime channel.
I really hope they make the cut, and have the chance to expand their offerings in the manner you describe. My girlfriend and I are both big fans of cartoons in general, and having oodles of anime to watch would be most welcome indeed.
