RTCW: Enemy Territory Full Version Released
bani writes "Following just a month after the test release, Enemy Territory has finally made a full version release! You can download the Linux and Windows versions for free, it does not require the retail Return to Castle Wolfenstein product in order to play.
Hats off to Id+Activision+SplashDamage for giving the community such an excellent 3d FPS, for FREE!"
Update by J : Id has set up a
BitTorrent
for the downloads. And if anyone needs a Mac beta-tester, I'm available :)
Does anyone know if there is a Debian package available of this game?
Quality, free 3D FPS games. What is the world coming... I smell armageddon.

I'm just glad I downloaded it last night when Maarten announced it. I really like it!
I despise having to have an account for places like this, and when you do get through its usually slow as hell.

I'm very excited by this news. Not only is it free but it is available for Windows AND Linux, already.
Now, why is the story red? It really looks wierd on the front page, and probably on games.slashdot.org too since that color scheme is purple.

for realeasing a good 3D FPS game for free to the community and not even requiring that you have the original game either. Always good to see companies do things like this because it generates goodwill. This will make more more likely to go buy the next game they release.

Its fantastic that they are releasing it for free, and I'm very grateful that development took place for GNU/Linux and win32 concurrently. However, I'd still like to see a quality open source FPS sometime. It is important to note that this is still "free as in beer", not "as in speech".
If I ever get it, I'll slap it up on my mutella node for everyone else. I think I'll ln -s it to "daddypants_sent_me_here.zip"
Still I thought the ET test game was excellent and I'm looking forward to this. IMHO, Wolfenstein just kicks the shit out of the likes of UT2003 with their flashier visuals simply because it is not one tedious fragfest with everyone bouncing around like kangaroos.
There seems to be a glitch in the Mat^H^H^HSlashdot system, or perhaps they are attempting to lure more subscribers by showing off the features of the system.
I was browsing it and opened another /. window
and it wasn't there. Perhaps there is a glitch?`
I do like the idea of having an on-line editor to
actually read problems associated with new stories,
the link to the editor seems like a good idea
(after all /. doesn't want to be like the NY Times :-).
I'm wondering that, too. Anyone know why Slashdot is all weird this morning?
Anyone? Anyone?

I noticed, along with this game, that Unreal Tournament 2003 also was released for Win and Linux simultaneously with the Mac version (of UT 2003 anyway) coming out much later. I know that Mac games are always later to market but does anyone have a theory (or even an actual reason) that Linux versions come out along with the Win version? Is development for the Mac platform really that much different now with OS X? Just curious.

Special thanks to fileplanet.com for hosting the linux version.
And as a token of our appreciation we will slashdot the hell out of fileplanet.com. Thanks once again guys.

I haven't been keeping up with news about this game. Is there a Macintosh version coming out? Return to Castle Wolfenstein is available for Mac OS X, so I would think it would be easy to get this out for it as well.

Either these companies are very smart or very stupid, I personally would have bought this game in store for a max of $50 which I'm sure other people would have as well and therefore increase revenue for the companies, but the fact that they are giving it away will really get the word out on them as well and give them the image of a "gamers gaming company" so when they will charge players for thier next big hit, people will remember the name and buy in (I know I would). Either way, Kudos to them for having the guts to give it away and make many MANY gamers very happy :)
Thanks guys!!!

A scam in which all people involved perceive as beneficial...
Since I can't really use either version of the game on my Mac (which is fine, it'll let me get work done :) ) is it beneficial for others for me to download via the torrent link or not? Even though I can't use the file, once I've downloaded it fully I'd only be helping the upload bandwidth I presume...
If you like the work SplashDamage has done for this game you should go check out Q3F. Just about everyone at SplashDamage started out in the industry by creating Quake 3 Fortress. It is a great mod and they are still involved with it. They will be releasing Q3F 2.3 soon.

Won't this take away from the retail MP version? I'm not in the habit of looking into a gift horse's mouth, just wondering...
...
It would be nice if they released a new single-player campaign. There aren't that many good SP maps out there and I've really enjoyed playing the SP version of RCTW.
Tried creating my own maps, but I'm crap at it

I have Doom I&II for trade. I will give leech access to this ftp site as well.
Sorry, just had an IRC-warez flashback
Seriously, it looks like a good game, and I'm impressed by the fact that it's free.
This is set to be a big hit, as you can play online with it, which today is the only thing that counts.

I don't know why they replaced the existing RTCW sounds--especially voices--with new ones in RTCW-ET that sound horrible.
This opinion is unanimous with everyone I've spoken to during the beta. Perhaps there were contractual issues with the original voice actors?
It probably won't be long before Gentoo (aka Gentoo Games) releases a LiveCD version for those of us who want insane frame rates! *Drools*
I'm on a 2.5/0.75Mbit ADSL. Current BT-speeds: 250kb/s down, 70kb/s up.
Good enough for me.

There are patches for Linux kernel that help improve interactive performance--especially for games. Try the "low latency" patch and you'll notice a huge difference.
Pardon the cynicism, but has anyone checked this for spyware?
Along with thanking ID, Activision, and SplashDamage we should be kissing Bram Cohen's ass for creating software which frees us from the shackles of fileplanet and /.ed mirrors.
Yea, thanks to all the seeders too.
At any rate, the Linux version is just plain SLOW. The Windows version, on the other hand, is a joy to use...
Nice try...
the linux version runs just fine on my really old hardware...
P-III 866 SMP with geforce4 and U160 scsi. I know it's a fricking dog slow machine yet I get great framerates and keep killing those kiddies in the fuel depot with ease...
Bah, linux version runs great.

That's really old hardware? I'll gladly trade you some of my brand new hardware for your really old hardware.
You most likely won't want to though.
I've found OpenGL games to run just as well under Linux as they do in Windows, if not marginally faster. And that's with Wine as well as Linux native. (All the Quake 3 based games I have tried work perfectly under Wine, fully hardware accelerated. So does Counterstrike)
Sounds like you don't have hardware accelleration set up properly (or at all). Your best bet is with an Nvidia or maybe ATI card (I think the Nvidia drivers are slightly more polished than the ATI drivers at this point but I'm not entirely sure as I don't use an ATI).
I'm averaging 3800 kB/sec (while also nabbing a torrent of Knoppix at 300 Kb/sec!) on a 760/128 DSL line, using the experimental client set to 'unlimited'.
I'm connected to 62 peers, and 14 seeds with 6 copies completed.
Bittorrent so rocks.
When the last two stories were posted, they included a mailto link to "daddypants@slashdot.org" labelled "problems with this article". Now that they've pulled it, my post looks stupid. FYI.
Thanks, that got me by the Smart Filter and it's on it's way.
I played the single-player version of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and it left me rather underwhelmed. However, this multiplayer version is quite a bit of fun........ I would have been happy to pay something ($15 - $30) for it, given the fact that it's not pay-for-play.
That being said, how is it possible that they were able to make such a cool game and then offer it for free?
I wonder if the Norwegian University of Science and Technology can handle this link posted on slashdot...
Let's find out. =)
My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right! =)
As a long-time RTCW addict, I can tell you this much -- The original RTCW in multiplayer mode is enough to keep you hooked for months. I mean, come on... Any game that allows you to shoot someone in the face point blank with a high powered rifle, drag their body off into a dark corner, set them on fire, and jump up and down on their chest while stabbing them in the face... What more could you ask for?

Have you tried, you know, not downloading it at work?
A man who can't pronouce "nuclear arsenal" shouldn't have one -sig ends here.
Does anyone know if there is a command line only linux dedicated server for RTCW? IIRC I once found one, but it used an older protocol that current clients couldn't connect to. I've searched high and low for information on this, but it doesn't seem too easy to find. Either that or I'm just looking in all the wrong places.
I was in the beta and I had no problem with the voices. Just fine to me.
I don't know why people always say that about hotdogs and hotdog buns.. here they both come in packages of 12.
You can get the linux version here.
You may have to wait to download the file, as they only allow 30 concurrent downloads, but I am getting 211Kb/sec down, so that's okay.
16 minutes into the download I am 80% done.

According to this article, the company You Play Games is offering an online wagering service where you gain or lose money depending on your playing skills. One of the games that will be supported is RTCW. Obviously they're trying out a new revenue model based on a percentage of the money flowing back and forth between wagers. A bit of a gamble, but it may pay off if the gambling service pays off.
Remember kids, companies never give anything away for free. There won't be spyware because you can't think of a better way to alienate your users. I figure with the gambling route everybody wins (except for the poor newbs who get pwn3d)!

Umm... The Q3 executable is available for linux, you know. I'm sure you can find the rpm somewhere. Gentoo has it in its portage too.
All you need to do is copy the .pk0 file from your CD into the baseq3 subdirectory, and you're good to go. No need for WINE at all.
You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button.
Alright, there's a Linux version, so is there a Mac OS X version?
I have some experience doing OpenGL both with Linux and with Mac OS X, and if they could get it working on Linux then they should definitely have an easy time getting it to work on OS X. Under Linux it's tricky to switch to fullscreen under X11 in a robust fashion: in a fashion that doesn't leave your WindowMaker dock or GNOME panel still showing. The last time I tried to do it with SDL the sample didn't work. Also, under Linux you of course can't programmatically change the display adapter's mode unless the end-user explicitly puts the mode in their /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 or whatever.
Let's not even get started with the state of programming decent sound on Linux....
Under OS X there are easy, supported ways to get fullscreen OpenGL modes, switch the display mode, and program great sound. You can find samples at Apple's developer site.
Nice Joel reference..
Why, do you cheat? Afraid of playing someone with some skill?

just curious if anyone out there has gotten it to run with an "older" Radeon card using the XFree radeon drivers?
glxgears (and Neverwinter Nights) run just fine - but et just presents a black screen and goes nowhere.
Anyone?

A pretty polished release is being given away - what can I do to support this kind of output? I was thinking about purchasing the original RTCW but it is getting a bit dated now. How do I support these commercial developers who have given way something free?
NPTL breakage (thanks glibc!) means you have to run X using LD_ASSUME_KERNEL if you are using the nVidia drivers. If you don't, you'll have wierd problems, like errors about the static TLS memory size being too small. Here's how to make it work.
1) Install the game.
2) DO NOT hit start, there is a bug in the installer, which will run the game as root if you run it from the installer. D'oh.
3) Once installed, hit ctrl-alt-f1 to get to a console. You can get back to the desktop at any point by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F7.
4) Log in as root, at the text terminal
5) Now enter the following commands exactly as shown:
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 :1
X -ac
6) You will be looking at any empty screen. Press ctrl-alt-f7 to go back to your desktop. Now enter these commands:
export DISPLAY=:1
xterm & metacity &
Now press ctrl-alt-f8 to go back to your dedicated gaming display :) Running, run "et" in the xterm that has appeared. The game should now start reasonably quickly, and let you set up a profile.
You can use ctrl-alt-f7/f8 to switch between game and desktop at any point.
Good luck, and have fun!
The real reason that this was released today is an attempt to destroy my chances of a successfull thesis defence next week. How can I possibly prepare when I must defend the world form evil Nazis? The world is against me I tell you.

With my Matrox G550 Quake3 runs just as fast on Linux as on Windows. The only difference is that it looks about 10 times better on Linux. Don't know why.
Software should be free as in speech, but if we also get some free beer, all the better.

I must be too stupid for Bittorrent. After One hour I still was uploading at 9kb/s and downloading at 1-3kb/s with an estimated Downloadtime of 20h. So I went over to fileplanet and start sharing it now by edonkey.

I agree wholeheartedly. I was immeadiately struck by the clarity and asthetics of ETs graphic design (the splash screen itself would make an excellent screen saver), but the voices are terrible. I suspect you are on to something with the voice actors. Perhaps there are contractual limitations that prevent inclusion of the original voice over work in a product that is being given away for free. I certainly can't understand why anyone would want to replace RTCWs slit-eyed "dynamite planted" with ETs dorktastic copy.
Well I just finished playing thought all the maps for ET, granted Im still getting used to the objectives but I have to say this rocks, and the quality of the level design and models are great. I think some people get turned off to this game quickly cause its pure chaos when you first start out, so I would really read up on any information about the maps, classes, objectives etc. its really a great game once you get into it.

Version: 1.0-4363 Operating System: Linux IA32 Release Date: April 24, 2003
Release Highlights:
Bug fixes since 1.0-4349
I've been using these drivers on Gentoo with NPTL without problems in 3d games (haven't tried this yet, but they work with everything else I've tried).
Yeah, that bugs me, too...but this is (largely) being played in America...home of the mono-lingulars. There's so much room to travel in America, we have no need for a second language.
But the Linux version I just stopped playing *did* have Germans speaking German....that was pretty cool.
This is an excellent game...and we're damned lucky to have it. I feel compelled to pay someone, somewhere for this great offering. (I was getting tired of Quake/UT).
--- For a good time mail uce@ftc.gov
While indeed quake3 is quake3 based, I have a feeling he was talking about other games than quake3 based, all of which don't have linux executables.
