RTCW: Enemy Territory Full Version Released
bani writes "Following just a month after the test release, Enemy Territory has finally made a full version release! You can download the Linux and Windows versions for free, it does not require the retail Return to Castle Wolfenstein product in order to play.
Hats off to Id+Activision+SplashDamage for giving the community such an excellent 3d FPS, for FREE!"

Does anyone know if there is a Debian package available of this game?
hi
No Man is an Island, Except Me -- Many servers turn on friendly fire. Almost all of these have some way to punish those who kill their teammates. You may sit out the next round, loose some health or be booted from the game. However, this only happens if you actually kill your teammate!
If your team is steamrolling the other, why not make things more interesting? At respawn, pull out your pistol and shoot your teammates in the leg! They'll gimp out into the rest of the world with a third of their hit points greatly evening things up. Remember, fair play is what the FPS community is all about!
On servers that give you the option to boot people who TK, this tactic can take on a whole new dimension of fun. When your greedy teammates resent you evening things up by shooting them in the knees, they're turn on you. You must punish their selfish actions by booting them off. This will give them some time to dwell on their actions and appreciate how you were only trying to restore balance to the game.
The Bridge Troll -- Many maps have a single, narrow exit from respawn. Outside that door awaits a horrible, violent and often gruesome death for you and your teammates. Rather than let your fellow players rush headlong into a meatgrinder, stand in front of the doorway and warn them about the dangers of the outside world. It'll take a while for this to sink in, so ignore their cries for you to move. Tough love, indeed.
If Friendly Fire has been turned on, feel free to combine it with the first tip and boot people who don't appreciate your life-saving technique.
The Jukebox -- These days many games allow you to comminicate by voice with other players. Its often overlooked that one can transmit virtually any sound to the other players! I enjoy making the game a little more surreal by playing circus music non-stop. Its been my discovery that most people value hearing circus music in the middle of a firefight. Other good songs are the Meow Mix jingle, any Christmas carol sung by the Chipmunks and the audio from any pornographic film.
Some players will mute you, while others desperately wish they knew how. Yet these players are a minority and you can bask in the warm huzzahs of your teammates for brightening up their playing experience.
The Kofi Annan Technique -- Playing the offense in Counterstrike? Well, violence never solved anything! Going out and shooting up a bunch of terrorists won't make the world a better place. And a terrorist shooting a bunch of police just makes their cause look bad.
Negotiations are the key to success in this world. Rather than rush headlong into a bloody skirmish, stay back at your respawn point. Find a good place to hide and then try to resolve your conflict through talking. Sure, your dead teammates may bemoan the fact that you're not violently avenging your death. But when they see that you were able to reach a solution without resorting to conflict, it will be a valueable lesson from them. So feel free to stay hidden until time runs out. You may not have planted the bomb or rescued the hostages but you have learned a little about life.

for realeasing a good 3D FPS game for free to the community and not even requiring that you have the original game either. Always good to see companies do things like this because it generates goodwill. This will make more more likely to go buy the next game they release.
Seriously, I don't want to sign up for that gamespy stuff, ever. Someone should start up a torrent for this and show the RIAA/MPAA just what good legal uses bittorrent really has.
3dgamers.com has it up without the need to login, pretty slow tho as everyone is grabbing it. Or have a little patience and get it from a .torrent later.

Shutters click as cameras capture the publicity stills, the pictures that will be on the cover of every magazine this week. This is how the world will remember the Olsen twins: matching tight pink blouses highlighting firm, buoyant adolescent breasts, tight black jeans suggesting a level of sexual experience which the twins do not, in fact, possess.
When the pictures are complete, the twins are turned so that they stand facing one another. Their arms are held behind their backs. The bailiffs bring a pair of cuffs for each girl. The cuffs have no keyholes; they are not designed to be removed. This fact is not lost on the girls, who begin to sob helplessly as they feel sharp steel close around their slender wrists.
Twin winches hum to life, pulling the girls up onto the balls of their naked feet. They begin to strangle almost immediately. They emit tormented gurgling sounds as boiled hemp digs into their tender throats. Quivering lips strip a couple more years off their apparent age. Their increasingly desperate facial expressions confirm that the Olsen girls are in no way prepared for the sudden pain. They have led lives of comfort and pampered privilege. They have never known suffering, until now.
The winches fall quiet, their cruel work done. This is where the girls will remain: in that place where the pain is psychologically overwhelming but not physically dangerous, in that horrible place where they could, perhaps, remain forever.
Still, this is an execution. And so the girls must not remain on their toes forever. They listen carefully as the announcer explains the rules of the game. He makes it sound erotic and exciting, and that is surely how the audience sees it. But it does not sound erotic and exciting to Ashley or Mary-Kate. Indeed, it fills their hearts with an almost limitless dread.
If nothing else happens, then in one hour's time, twin trapdoors will open beneath the girls' feet. Because they are already on their toes, there's no chance that their necks will snap. They will have to dance themselves to death--a process which, the announcer explains, could take up to an hour, because the twins don't weigh very much, and because their nooses have been tied loose.
If, on the other hand, one of the girls chooses to take action, she can buy herself a quick, easy death. As the announcer speaks, bailiffs slip small cylindrical remote control units into Ashley's right hand and Mary-Kate's left. If either girl pushes her button, then her winch will lower her down onto the gallows platform, while the trapdoor drops out from under her sister's feet. She may watch in comfort, her breathing perfectly unrestricted, while her sister endures a terminal slow hang. The girl who pushed her button will then have earned a neck-snapping long drop.
The moment the announcer finishes his introduction, the twins begin to negotiate through their tears. At first they are selfless, altruistic:
"You have to drop me, Mary-Kate," Ashley whimpers. Her voice is thick and rough. The noose is tight, and it hurts to speak. "You're my baby sister. I have to take care of you. I can't bear to watch you hang!"
"Baby sister? You're two minutes older than me, Ashley! And how do you think I'd feel, if I had to watch you spend an hour strangling to death? No way! We'll die together!"
"Don't be stupid, Mary." A little anger surfaces now, through the pain, through the laborious breathing which is required to get even a few words out. "Do you know how much that'll hurt?
"Hurts now," Mary-Kate replies. She is being economical with her words, for each one costs her dearly.
"Yes. And we're still on our toes. Airdance...much worse."
"Scared," says Mary-Kate.
"Then push the button."
The girls perspire as they suffer. The thin pink cotton of their tight tops sticks to their skin; the wet fabric is slightly translucent. Naturally, they wear no bras. Their taut, pouting young breasts press up through their blouses, yearning towards the heaven the

Just thought I'd mention it so
Its fantastic that they are releasing it for free, and I'm very grateful that development took place for GNU/Linux and win32 concurrently. However, I'd still like to see a quality open source FPS sometime. It is important to note that this is still "free as in beer", not "as in speech".
If I ever get it, I'll slap it up on my mutella node for everyone else. I think I'll ln -s it to "daddypants_sent_me_here.zip"

There seems to be a glitch in the Mat^H^H^HSlashdot system, or perhaps they are attempting to lure more subscribers by showing off the features of the system.
So the Slashdot editors believe that having an online duty editor able to correct mistakes is better than getting it right the first time?! Come on Rob, you gotta be kidding us. Get off your fat ass and do something correct the first time so you aren't the internet jackass everyone says you are.

I noticed, along with this game, that Unreal Tournament 2003 also was released for Win and Linux simultaneously with the Mac version (of UT 2003 anyway) coming out much later. I know that Mac games are always later to market but does anyone have a theory (or even an actual reason) that Linux versions come out along with the Win version? Is development for the Mac platform really that much different now with OS X? Just curious.

Either these companies are very smart or very stupid, I personally would have bought this game in store for a max of $50 which I'm sure other people would have as well and therefore increase revenue for the companies, but the fact that they are giving it away will really get the word out on them as well and give them the image of a "gamers gaming company" so when they will charge players for thier next big hit, people will remember the name and buy in (I know I would). Either way, Kudos to them for having the guts to give it away and make many MANY gamers very happy :)
Thanks guys!!!

A scam in which all people involved perceive as beneficial...
I was an early beta-tester for this game, and I regret to report that this is yet another game that you'll need to keep your Windows partition around for.
Believe me, I'm an expert at optimizing my Linux machine - why, I just graduated from Redhat school last month!
At any rate, the Linux version is just plain SLOW. The Windows version, on the other hand, is a joy to use...
Is there something wrong with the Linux kernel that makes it so difficult to write games for? Should linux try to copy DirectX maybe?
Since I can't really use either version of the game on my Mac (which is fine, it'll let me get work done :) ) is it beneficial for others for me to download via the torrent link or not? Even though I can't use the file, once I've downloaded it fully I'd only be helping the upload bandwidth I presume...

If you like the work SplashDamage has done for this game you should go check out Q3F. Just about everyone at SplashDamage started out in the industry by creating Quake 3 Fortress. It is a great mod and they are still involved with it. They will be releasing Q3F 2.3 soon.

I don't know why they replaced the existing RTCW sounds--especially voices--with new ones in RTCW-ET that sound horrible.
This opinion is unanimous with everyone I've spoken to during the beta. Perhaps there were contractual issues with the original voice actors?

How is that comment flamebait? I'm just curious because I think that it was a decent comment. Definitely not worthy of -1 Flamebait. The Test did have serious lag problems and I decided not to play as much as I might have if there hadn't been so many issues with it. I was on a extremely fast Cable Modem Connection in a rural area with not many competing high speed users around and still found players teleporting to other parts of the screen constantly. If you don't bother to even read a comment then don't mod it down.
Now this comment is probably worthy of flamebait.

I played the single-player version of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and it left me rather underwhelmed. However, this multiplayer version is quite a bit of fun........ I would have been happy to pay something ($15 - $30) for it, given the fact that it's not pay-for-play.
That being said, how is it possible that they were able to make such a cool game and then offer it for free?
I wonder if the Norwegian University of Science and Technology can handle this link posted on slashdot...
Let's find out. =)
My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right! =)
I've looked at the RTCW site, and read through a bunch of stuff, and I still can't find a straightforward answer.
Are there bots in ET?
I've read that it is multiplayer only, and that they were planning on having bots at some point, but I can't tell if there are bots in the final version.
It's really important for me to know, because if I'm playing on a LAN with my brother and friends, and we can't fill out a team, it's always nice to have bots along. I also remember the bot issue being one of the biggest problems with RTCW during its initial release.
As a long-time RTCW addict, I can tell you this much -- The original RTCW in multiplayer mode is enough to keep you hooked for months. I mean, come on... Any game that allows you to shoot someone in the face point blank with a high powered rifle, drag their body off into a dark corner, set them on fire, and jump up and down on their chest while stabbing them in the face... Does anyone know if there is a command line only linux dedicated server for RTCW? IIRC I once found one, but it used an older protocol that current clients couldn't connect to. I've searched high and low for information on this, but it doesn't seem too easy to find. Either that or I'm just looking in all the wrong places.
I was in the beta and I had no problem with the voices. Just fine to me.
And only a full YEAR after I got tired of playing the version I paid for.

According to this article, the company You Play Games is offering an online wagering service where you gain or lose money depending on your playing skills. One of the games that will be supported is RTCW. Obviously they're trying out a new revenue model based on a percentage of the money flowing back and forth between wagers. A bit of a gamble, but it may pay off if the gambling service pays off.
Remember kids, companies never give anything away for free. There won't be spyware because you can't think of a better way to alienate your users. I figure with the gambling route everybody wins (except for the poor newbs who get pwn3d)!

I hope Bittorrent has better than this to offer.
I'm getting between 15-30 kb/s with the Id link using Bittorrent.
Maybe that's good given the slashdotting and the fact it's the initial release.
What we really need is speeds posted using both Bittorrent and other sources, to compare. I was getting 120kb/s the other day downloading bonus stuff for UT2003.
Okay, here's an update on the Bittorrent speeds:
Now I'm getting a steady 70kb/s.
From other sites I tried, I was getting about 6 kb/s.
So maybe Bittorrent is doing pretty well.
What they're not telling you is that installing Punkbuster is REQUIRED. You can disable it from within the game, but by then it's already installed. I wasted hours downloading RTCW:ET from a taxed server only to find out it's useless to me. I won't ever install Punkbuster or play any game that requires it.

Alright, there's a Linux version, so is there a Mac OS X version?
I have some experience doing OpenGL both with Linux and with Mac OS X, and if they could get it working on Linux then they should definitely have an easy time getting it to work on OS X. Under Linux it's tricky to switch to fullscreen under X11 in a robust fashion: in a fashion that doesn't leave your WindowMaker dock or GNOME panel still showing. The last time I tried to do it with SDL the sample didn't work. Also, under Linux you of course can't programmatically change the display adapter's mode unless the end-user explicitly puts the mode in their /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 or whatever.
Let's not even get started with the state of programming decent sound on Linux....
Under OS X there are easy, supported ways to get fullscreen OpenGL modes, switch the display mode, and program great sound. You can find samples at Apple's developer site.

A pretty polished release is being given away - what can I do to support this kind of output? I was thinking about purchasing the original RTCW but it is getting a bit dated now. How do I support these commercial developers who have given way something free?
NPTL breakage (thanks glibc!) means you have to run X using LD_ASSUME_KERNEL if you are using the nVidia drivers. If you don't, you'll have wierd problems, like errors about the static TLS memory size being too small. Here's how to make it work.
1) Install the game.
2) DO NOT hit start, there is a bug in the installer, which will run the game as root if you run it from the installer. D'oh.
3) Once installed, hit ctrl-alt-f1 to get to a console. You can get back to the desktop at any point by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F7.
4) Log in as root, at the text terminal
5) Now enter the following commands exactly as shown:
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 :1
X -ac
6) You will be looking at any empty screen. Press ctrl-alt-f7 to go back to your desktop. Now enter these commands:
export DISPLAY=:1
xterm & metacity &
Now press ctrl-alt-f8 to go back to your dedicated gaming display :) Running, run "et" in the xterm that has appeared. The game should now start reasonably quickly, and let you set up a profile.
You can use ctrl-alt-f7/f8 to switch between game and desktop at any point.
Good luck, and have fun!

I agree wholeheartedly. I was immeadiately struck by the clarity and asthetics of ETs graphic design (the splash screen itself would make an excellent screen saver), but the voices are terrible. I suspect you are on to something with the voice actors. Perhaps there are contractual limitations that prevent inclusion of the original voice over work in a product that is being given away for free. I certainly can't understand why anyone would want to replace RTCWs slit-eyed "dynamite planted" with ETs dorktastic copy.
Well I just finished playing thought all the maps for ET, granted Im still getting used to the objectives but I have to say this rocks, and the quality of the level design and models are great. I think some people get turned off to this game quickly cause its pure chaos when you first start out, so I would really read up on any information about the maps, classes, objectives etc. its really a great game once you get into it.

since it appears none of the comments talk about the game but about the various evil places were you can d/l it if you are not running bittorrent ill be the first.
what is the difference between this version and the test version? are there more levels? is it just more stable? I see from the filesize its less than 300 megs so I imagine it cant have to many levels.
i am d/ling it via torrent and its 1/3 d/led already so I may just find out firsthand how the game plays before finding a post.
