YoDave writes "Have a slick new iMac and a boring old desk? This BBC report may be music to your eyes. John Treby from the University of Hertfordshire has designed the iDesk. It has space age styling with space for all your Apple goodies and not much else. Rain Design of San Francisco is shipping a similar stand called the iGo. PC users can prepare to drool with envy, again."
what about those of us with an old imac and a slick new desk?

Is it any good when surfing for pr0n???
I've always loved apple because they're just soo much more styly than a M$ box. Ever moticed that in most movies if they have to do a computer scene they never have windoze, always Mac or the old console interface (not that the console is bad I have heaps of friends who nly use the linux console), thats cause the mac is more 'cool' (not that /.'rs would even touch cool with a long stick :)

Just look at all the air around that desk. Complete waste of space!
Instead, get something like this.
That's all the desk you should ever need.

On a desk like that, where would I put the pizza and the stuffed Tux??
I don't think PC users drool with envy over Apple Mac computers.. i'd like an iMac, and if I really wanted one that badly i'd sell my PC and buy one. But at the end of the day, an iMac can't do everything my PC so i'm going to stick with it for now.

I'm all for eye-candy, but the desk looks to be unsuitable for my needs (ymmv, of course). At work, I generally have a couple of books close to hand, printouts of specs, a project plan or two, etc. The paperless office is a nice idea, but I don't see it happening any time soon...
At home, my desk is a complete mess. CDs everywhere, a book or two, assorted junk that I really ought to put away but never quite get round to doing... There, a desk like this might actually make sense, as it would (hopefully!) force me to be a little tidier. For work, though, it's simply not practical.
Looks utterly gorgeous, though.
It's official. Most of you are morons.
...there's always the one in the front of the iMac, isnt there?

Ikea must be sweating like mad right now. Overpriced overhyped overtrendy furniture is their turf...
Watching monitor on that desk would cause enormous strain on my neck. It's really not nice to look upwards.
For either of the linked iRealityDistortionStations, there is no place to put CD's, papers, a drawing pad, or any other tools. Much less a drink. Or for the Mac crowd, their reality distortion equipment.

Many of the big companies (such as Steelcase, Herman Miller, etc.) that make office furniture also make high quality workstation systems. But what will looks of your desk help when your back and neck is strained? I think that was by far the most non-ergonomical desks I have ever seen. I think I would throw them it out imediatly if my employer asked me to use one of thoose.
It is so many errors with the workspace that I don't even what to go into it.
Only one thing good was probably the iGo's built in lamp for night-work. But that is probably just about it.

I'm sorry, but these offering suffer from the same flaws as Apple's current design. An over-pretentious presentation, and a form that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Give me a good solid oak desk, or something in black laquer any day of the week. You know, something that looks like I'll be able to pass down to my great-grandchildren. These desks are purely the flavor of the week, and will be forgotten by next month.

Why is it that almost all desks made specifically for computers have their legs exactly where I would like to put mine? I hate furniture that comes in my way when I try to use it. Why not just let the table have its legs far apart, with room for my legs in between?
The pictures on the iGo page are hilarious. Can you see the way the woman has to sit in order to use the computer? More than 5 minutes at a time in that position and my back breaks. The designers obviously never tries to actually use the furniture they make.
Where the hell do I put stuff like reference meterials, notepad, or even, god forbid, a cup of coffee? At least the boring desk works
we can rebuild this sig. we have the technology
It may look good, but its functionality as an office workstation is impaired. Unless, of course, you have managed to eliminate all need for paper and take all coffee/meals away from the machine (which is highly inefficent).
I'd go for a simpler desk, instead of one of these iSores. I just get the feeling that the long legged one would topple over (iDesk). Well, whatever floats your boat.

I must admit, I do own an L shaped somewhat ergo desk, a microsoft un-natural keyboard as well as a microsoft optical track ball. I even have heavy duty platform for my keyboard.
I appricate the i-desk on some level... but there just isn't enough desk for my tastes, and it's freaking tacky as hell.
L shape design.. this I like. Place to route cables, added bonus. But even if I owned an i-mac I would want a bit more desk to my deskstation. not this rounded corner look from hell.

I am Slashdot. Are you Slashdot as well?
You know, that fancy sleek iDesk looks awkward to me. I'm nearsighted so I really have to strain to see text on the screen if my face is more than 18 to 20 inches away. From the pictures, it would seem one's head would sit a good two and a half feet from the screen at least. I have contact lenses, but I can't look at computer screens for very long with them in before they start hurting. For some reason I don't blink as often looking at computer screens. Rewetting drops work for a while, but it's just easier to sit closer. I agree with you completely big, rectangular and flat is the way to go. Much more comfortable.
I recently ended a long and agonizing affair with "computer furniture." Over the years I've spent fairly large sums of money swapping out one arrangement for another with the belief that each new purchase was necessary -- to "finally" get comfortable, be more productive, make more efficient use of space, etc.
What did I do? I started by refinishing an old pine dining room table. Instead of a "ledge," I have a "real" desk with plenty of space on which to read and write, pile books, and rest my elbows. My two 21" monitors are off to the side (an L-shaped arrangement) on a second table I built with a retractable keyboard tray. Underneath that table, the computers are kept in a sealed but vented cabinet. The rack equipment (including hissing modems, routers, etc.) I moved into a closet (also sealed and vented).
Workstations may be fine for working if one defines working as doing nothing but staring at your monitor with your hands typing away at the keyboard. Past that, however, I find the entire concept as flawed and unworkable.
Mind you, I do think the desks shown look nice, but I'd never trade horizontal space with the gimmicky extras and pseudo ergonomics that are part of all modern computer furniture design. Put another way, if I hand nothing else, I'd use a 6' utility table instead. Or hell, maybe even a door on supports -- at least you can decorate it with a plant or two.
I am highly happy to not own either the outstandingly ugly (and slow, overpriced, etc) iMac, nor this horrible "workplace".
If you are a fashion designer, by all means get this, as you will probably not spend that much time in front of it, and you can ramble on about Gucci and the latest dresses (about as practical as this desk...). I have to spend a considerable time in front of a computer, so I want it to be practical, I can care less about the color as long as it doesn't reflect a lot of light.
It all makes sense when you look at the pictures of the desk "in action".
Notice the woman in the picture is lounging around, in hip poses, looking stylish and "chic", but not actually getting any work done.

Just as the mac table holds exactly the equipment a mac user needs/can afford, my table accomodates my monitor, KVM switch, printer, scanner, speakers, network hub, firewall, and fax machine, with room left over for note paper, coffee cups, pens, USB gadgets, CDs and manuals. It has plenty of space below for my 5 PCs and their huge tangle of cables.
As an 31337 mod, I've added a sliding keyboard/mouse tray and a clip-on desk lamp. I've been using this setup for years, and I really can't find anything wrong with it.
On another note, would someone like to invest in my new venture? ipail.com. I sell pail and pail accessories.
No envy here... Those seem a little too "corporate" for me. Maybe I'm just not part of the Mac Generation.
I prefer my 2 old doors up on 2x4 legs wraparound desk. I covered the tops with some kind of wierd plastic posterboard, and I added an aftermarket lamp. I got a few old arm lamps from a yard sale, rewired them and drilled holes in my desk that fits the bases of them.
Maybe it's not as pretty as those i-thingies but it's as solid as heck, it fits in with this renovated barn I hav emy office in, and I do get to fiddle with the old hinges while I'm compiling...
Do these remind anyone else of toilets? Besides the color I guess it's because they seem designed to just hold the computer and not do much else. Actually there is more room to put things on my toilet so I guess they would be inferior even at that.
Desk space is a good thing, legs that don't get in the way is a good thing, not having your scanner on a hump way off in the background is a good thing. These designs utterly suck.
Of how people use thier computers... Does anyone actually do this?

I was totally jealous of butt-ugly iMacs before, but this just takes it! Now there are butt-ugly desks to go with them. These desks are just like the iMac -- small, fruity, and with no space to get real work done.
Oh yes, I'm drooling with envy. I've always wanted a desk that was straight out of the Jetsons. The furniture in these pictures look like that modern crap that came out of the '60s, and quickly died, except for the fact that it's not a nasty orange color.
I hate the iGO! WHEELS? Please, I'd have to chase my desk across the floor every time I tried to use the sorry thing. The model might be cute, but who really tries to sit on a couch will using the computer? Really. Inside an hour you would hurt so bad that you'd want to kick the sorry thing. Not to mention that you would be too tired to do so from chasing it across the floor.
As for the other POS, the strength of the materials is a big concern. The last thing I want is any flex in my workstation. I can see this as the new replacement for cow-flipping -- Keyboard Flinging!.
Finally the mere thought of trying to access your peripherals while chasing some sorry rotating tray makes me shudder in fear.
No thanks, I want a good solid and dependable desk that won't break. Can it look nice? Certainly, but I prefer this.

i have in my mind a more of less perfect setup of a workstation. it goes something like this: alien.
that's right. i'm gonna build a room covered in pingpong balls, and use voice-commands for everything on my comp, using 'mother' as the trigger.
all the stuff that i need, like books, misc papers, scanners, coffee, phone, blah blah, would be tucked away in one of the hidden drawers, that extend to where i sit on voice command while, get this, it puffs out small clouds of smoke going chk-tsssssss .
you think i'm kidding? i'm not. oh, and for a chair, i'd go for that ceiling mounted thing from event horizont, so that i could just rotate in my room at leaisure. so when i'm bored, i'd be weeeeee.
now that's a good setup. not those wimpy designer tables that look good only when not actually used...

I belong to the ______ generation.
Yeah, well, the design is cool, but I still can't keep my feet like I want to. The iDesk has its only leg right in front of me and the NetSurfer places the computer there. I still think that the best desk for computer use is a normal desk with plenty of room for my legs underneath.
Yeah and did you notice how the design looks really practical, only lacking a switch to flush it.
These guys make cooler furnature that looks halfway functional.
Oh. So sorry for associating you with those. My bad.
I believe that i own the most ergonomic computer workstation there is. And its quite simple to make yourself. Two 6' utility tables next to each other. I can store so much crap on them, I never have to run to a bookshelf or somewhere else to get something i need.
And the best part about the tables are that they have no drawers to smack your knee agains, and provide excellent leg room for stretching and whatnot.
The first thing i thought when i saw these iWorkstations was "Whre do you put all your crap."
But, I do say this would be a perfect setup for the 80 year old women who think macs are cute and only use them for e-mail.
That's stupid - we have planety of Apples where I work and, while they tend to need less support than their Windows counterparts, people frequently still need help with using and fixing them. The thought that people in the IT business don't want to support a solid platform sounds ludicrous to me and a sign of a bad IT professional.

Maybe it's because I'm not a Mac PersonTM, but if I was forced to use one of those desks I would hit somebody with a stick. If, when they recovered, they asked me to sit at the desk again, I would feel compelled to hit them with the stick again.
Perhaps the best plan of action would be to hit the person with the Desk itself. Hopefully ruining both in one shot.

Lately I've been using my PowerBook a lot when I'm watching TV. I put the critter on a TV Table (substantial wood kind, not the rickety aluminum kind) and IRC away while I'm watching TV. This desk would be ideal for that kind of entertainment multitasking.
I have been considering one of those rollaway desks specifically designed for laptop computers. However, being that I'm a broke dot-com refugee going back to school this Fall, I have more important priorities than that, like food and shelter. So the TV Table is just fine for my purposes.

forget the desk... the model on the iGo's site is HOT! :-o
Complaining about where to put stuff misses the point, I think. The idea is that this thing sits beside or opposite your ordinary analog desk, rather than replacing it. I personally like to have my digital desktop integrated with my analog desktop, rather than elsewhere in the room, but there are many folks I know who like a separate roll-around workstation. This is for them, only.
Does that help?

Along the lines of poor design... the keyboard tray is physically centered with the display. Unfortunately, the useable center of the keyboard is not the physical center; the numeric keypad offsets everything. The useable middle of a keyboard is between the G and H keys.
Spoon not. Fork, or fork not. There is no spoon.
Welcome to the wonderful world of IKEA. I have their Galant desk here at home.
This desk is immense. The shorter limb is about two meters, the longer 3. Extremely sturdy. You can literally jump up and down on it. It laughs at my 43 Kg 22" monitor. Note how the legs are placed way back or to the sides, more leg space for you. I have four computers on it, two rolling sets of drawers and the trusty old HPLJIII below. That still leaves plenty of desk space for the phone, ADSL modem, various piles of paper and assorted knick-knack.
Prize: $329. I couldn't buy the planks to build a desk this size for $329 (slight exageration).
To much or not enough? It's all modular. Buy new segments. The desk in the picture is made from a narrow segment, a wide segment, a narrow-to-wide bend and a semi-circular wide end-cap.They fit together in a wide variety of configurations. By some strange voodoo the pictured desk is exactly the same as mine.
NB: I'm not in any way affiliated with IKEA, I just like this desk. Best I ever had.
I choose to remain celibate, like my father and his father before him.
These are Industrial Design Projects, and should be evaluated as such (not Apple's endorsement of a sellable, workable workstation). Thing is that when people bought an iMac, lots of them complained about how it made the rest of the room look ugly. So some students responded to this and created these proof of concepts. So everyone, go easy.
I still have drawings of a concept mp3 player from my classes from 1994 (back then, it was just a black box that "magically holds 100 songs").
If all goes well, I'll have my ideal desk shortly, and for free, too!
It's a 1950's era Steelcase desk. Weighs a ton and has a desk surface area approximately that of a small aircraft carrier.
What makes it idea is that it has a swingaway typewriter platform on the left side. Pull out and push down and the scanner will disappear inside the desk, behind a door. That's where the scanner will live and if there's enough clearance when the scanner is stowed, the 10 GB external SCSI drive will be stashed there as well.
On the desktop, there will be more than enough room for the PowerMac 5400/200, modem, speakers, mouse, telephone, LaserWriter, Palm cradle, Hello Kitty USB hub, CD rack, plastic file folder holders, red stapler, mug full of pens, coaster for the can of Red Bull, slide rule, calculators, diverse reference books and manuals, diverse desk tools, Initech mouse pad, et al, etc.

I think the only real function for this "desk" is to advertise the Macintosh on it. In other words, it'd be great to draw attention to the Macintosh for in-store demos or something but that's about it.
Furry cows moo and decompress.
Someone please mod it up. I agree entirely. At work, I have my monitor lifted up pretty high, because I'm convinced that the people that came up with the notion that you monitor should be lower than your eyes have never actually worked at a computer all day. Everything about that desk looks right. As for not having enough room for documents and things, nobody ever said that you can only have one desk. At work, I need a lot more than one dest to suit my needs.
Does that thing look strikingly similar to the "Martian Attack Machines" from the 1953 version of War of the Worlds?

It's just like a real desk, except that there is no room for anything but a specific line of Apple computers.
That's right, but what you show is a very primitive, very unfuctional desk.
Nothing can beat (yet) IKEA's Jerker desk. Personally I have two of them, each with three shelves onthe top (Jerker can have an extension to make it even higher). It's the only desk that can fit two Apple Studio 21 on it, with two printers and two scanners on aside trail-shelves. The size is big to fit two big displays with keybowards *AND* to leave some space for papers.
Do you like Jerker's design? That's not all! Jerker s design is flexible: you can adapt it to size of your equipment. But what's the most important, Jerker is the strongest desk I've ever found.
I don't work for IKEA. I just love Jerker after I spent so much of time and money looking for the best desk.

Good thing I don't have any money.
In spite of the suggestions and all the tests that I have made, I have not cavato a spider from the hole.
I meant it in the most juvenile way. Not literally "gay". Most gay men I know have better taste than to buy anything from Apple.
So the iMac was considered an aesthetic success for a couple of reasons, one of which was its minimalism: It's small, it's self-contained, and it doesn't dominate your space. Designing a whole freakin' desk around the computer doesn't exactly go along with that concept. "Needing" special furniture to acomodate your computer is one of the problems with computers that Apple's design tries to avoid, and they're reintroduced it on stylistic grounds.
Obviously, the pictures of the iDesk show what is merely an "artist's concept". It shows a round shelf to hold mouse. The production model would at the very least include two more shelves like that: one big shelf to hold the pizza, and one small shelf to hold the caffiene.
There's something not right with that desk. I find that it's design for the sake of design rather than something that was made to be functional and elegant yet minimal with no waste. I personally prefer my desk better - it's a Caban oak desk that came out last year - sticker price was $1300 USD but I managed to snag it for far less. http://homepage.mac.com/patricksevenlee/cabandesk. jpg
FYI, I have run OS9, but that was the past, this is the present, and the present is OSX, And since this desk appears to be new (it was designed for the flat-panel iMac).
OS9 had 2 forms of multitasking, it had the co-operative multitasking that you got by default in the OS8 and prior environment, it also had(has?) a preemptive system. The main OS (the cooperative part) worked as a thread of the preemtable system, which is kind of wierd, but also irrelevent since OS9 should be consigned to the dustbin of any respectible establishment, and my home.
