      Those pizza boxes get double/triple/quadruple checked in case there is the slightest remnant of cheese left before they are reluctantly chucked into the gaping bin.

      And besides who's going to throw away a significantly heavier than usual box without checking inside?

      I have to say, this is a dumb idea. It merely attracts a different kind of thief, a much more prevalent kind. Those who are not generally bad people but will stoop low enough to steal a pizza they see lying unattended.

      Unlike most people it seems I actually followed the link and checked out the product: what a con! It's a standard pizza box with a bit of cheap foam lining and two pieces of red ribbon to "secure" your laptop.

      You'd have to be insane a) to trust your $3000 laptop to such a pile of shit and b) pay 12.99GBP for such a pile of shit.

      The real question is how much did they pay one of the editors to advertise this crap on /. ?

      I had a laptop in a nondescript backpack swiped out of my car a few months ago.

      Dunno how they knew there were goodies inside, but there was a laptop-theft-ring operating in Huntsville at the time...

      Why leave your laptop at all?

      When my laptop is not at home I generally don't get that far from it [unless I'm at a friends place or something]. Let's see, 1500$ laptop... 2 seconds to get stolen... hmmm...

      Sure would be nice to live in a world where you don't have to lug things like that around but that's why you have to be smart. Don't take your laptop somewhere unless you actually need it. Duh

      Hell, even if I am in an air port or sitting down somewhere if the back pack (that has my laptop in it ) is not on my back I will place my leg though one of the shoulder straps while it rests on the ground just in case some trys to run up and snach it while it is sitting on the ground and I am eating that fine airport cuisine.

      I do similar stunts. My laptop is in a case though so if I have to use my hands I put the case between my legs [on the ground] tightly so I can feel if it's moving.

      Though I've been lucky. I've caught people eyeing the case from time to time but nobody has ever reached for it or nothing.

      People always misjudge that about Canada. We're polite [to your face] and generally non-violent. But the second you turn your back someone is there to steal all your belongings. ... well it's not that bad but ... hehehe oh never mind...

      If you've spent any time on a college campus, nondescript heavy bags are just as likely to be stolen as laptop bags, because the nondescript heavy bags are likely to have very expensive textbooks in them.

      I carry my Thinkpad in a Chrome bag. It's comfy, it's cool, it carries lots of other things besides laptops. If I leave the laptop at home, I can get a half rack of beer in there with room to spare. It's waterproof. It has an ingenius seatbelt-buckle mechanism for the strap. It has a secret stash pocket for your, umm, stash.

      I bought it for commuting by bike, I kept it for the all-around usefulness.

      Yeah, did your "light laptop" come with a 4 hour battery [for an Athlon-XP-M 2400+], 15" screen, DVD/CDRW, floppy drive, 2 USB, parallel and serial ports, ieee1394, svideo, PS/2 and VGA ports?

      [oh and a 60GB disk... though that adds little to the weight comparably].

      Oh... and did it cost 1500$ CDN?

      I'd rather carry around a "complete" computer only when I need it then carry around a "half complete" computer all the time.

      Most laptops simply aren't portable enough. I've got a JVC Mininote. My laptop (ultra-sub-notebook technically) fits in my coat pocket. Its a little larger than 2 DVD cases stuck back to back. Its lovely.

      Um it's the Presario 2180CA. It's a bit heavy [7lbs] but is not a "luggable". I've seen huge laptops before and this is "mid-size" by comparison.

      I mean, you can't say that the 2180CA is huge when you just have to look at the [iirc] 3210 series [both compaqs] to see what a huge laptop is.

      But again, if I'm going to spend 1500$ on a laptop [which is the average price in Ottawa for retail] I want to have ports, I want to have media, and I want to be able to type on it without using toothpicks.

      That's your opinion. If you think a "computer" worthy of 1500$ should have a 7" monitor, 4GB disk, 128MB of ram and no external ports...

      Well then I guess I don't know what a decent computer is...

      Yeah, because that's what I want to do, stand typing one handed on a 15$/hr wifi connection to chaps like you ;-)

      Even if my laptop was half the weight [like 3lbs or roughly 1.4Kg] I still wouldn't want to hold it like that for very long.

      Though when I was in France [at the airport going home] I did crack open my "luggable huge laptop" and manage to check some email. I just did the amazing thing of

      a) showing up to the airport early

      b) Sitting down on one of the couchs that are all around.

      I guess I'm SMRT smart...

      No, my light laptop had a 4 hour battery, weighs 4-5lbs, has most of those ports (no svideo/ps2/parallel, 1394 is a card) and has a 20g disk. I got it used for $800 and $200 will get me a 60G drive if that ever becomes an issue. Right now, it's good enough for SW development, email, and web. It's also cool to the touch, verging on warm if you leave it running for a few hours.

      Um we have lines in Canada too [not as bad though... San Diego at 6am is VERY busy surprisingly]...I guess I can "take" holding 8lbs... us tough cannucks ;-)

      I'm not saying 12" laptops are "bad" [well for me they would be]. Just trying to point out that you don't have to carry your laptop everywhere "just because you can".

      And being smart about when you bring it [in my case I guess, being the only owner of the 2180CA series apparently] can save on having to carry it around [because after a 16 hour day lugging it through downtown to the bus depot isn't fun].

      I'm only talking retail off the shelf brand spanking new here [and Oct'03 prices too]

      My brother routinely mocks me because he got the 2210 [or something, it has the same shell as mine] for 1200$ ... except his has no floppy, ieee, serial, parallel, svideo or ps2.

      He says "those are useless ports" until he tried to plug his ps2 keyboard/mouse into it. hehehe ;-)

      I actually use the other ports [except ieee but it's nice to have]. I use the parallel to program flash carts and the serial to talk to embedded systems. I use the floppy occasionally for quick backups to somewhere else and I use the svideo to talk to tv's.

      Point is my "luggable" computer is actually a computer and not just a screen with a keyboard. So if I pay the price [in terms of an extra 3 lbs] than so be it.

      That's also why I made the comment "bring it when you need it". How many times do you go to town [if you're like me and don't live in a major downtown area] to visit friends or get lunch and actually need your laptop?

      If you don't bring shit you don't need everywhere you stand less chance of forgetting it some place and having it stolen don't you think?

      That and the odder thing is the battery life. His is a celeron M and mine is an Athlon [barton class]. His at 175Mhz and mine at 530Mhz [lowest speeds they can do] use the EXACT SAME AMOUNT OF POWER...I'd rather have an Athlon [which is faster] in that case ;-)

      Also he bought his laptop Dec'04 and I bought my laptop in Oct'03 so there is a years difference in purchase time.

      No but I guess you guys are right. 1/8th of a computer is a "good deal".

      My next computer will only have R and G pixels no sense on using blue. I want to have the mostest uberest computer possible! Afterall incomplete products [re: multi-function cameras] are all the rage now!

      I've been on cramped regional aircraft and they let me carry my laptop + metal case [when I had it] PLUS an additional backpack [school bag I use for a day bag].

      No, luggables are large boxes, weighing in at about 20 pounds, and having cool 1/2" shock mounts around the hard disk drive (they really are cool).

      Woops - I forgot that I do have video out, so I can play DVDs on a large screen. Fact is, I don't need or want a parallel port, and my P3 laptop does what I want it to. It's a whole computer, and it works.

      The dollar is a unit of currency, but the abbreviation for dollar is not $, but USD (or in your case CDN.) '$' is a punctuation mark or something, and therefore has its own way to be used.

      Yeah, but you're in trouble when he realizes a simple fact:

      1 laptop = LOTS of pizzas!!!

      So he starts thinking of ways to enjoy this "free prize":

      a) He sells it and gets an extra money for pizzas
      b) He steals your passwords, credit card numbers, and orders a pizza with your account (keep the change, you filthy animal). Of course he gets in trouble because he ordered the pizza with "extra anchovies".
      c) He calls you and asks for a reward for "finding a laptop that some guy dropped"
      d) He calls you and asks for a delicious quantity of money "if you want to keep your data alive and healthy. And don't call the cops"
      e) b) and c)
      f) b) and d)
      g) He backs up your porn folder and sets up a paid website using your credit card, to earn more money.
      h) He backs up all your data and starts blackmailing you when he finds out that besides a porn folder, you also have online dates, AND you're married.
      i) He finds out that you're involved in some illegal activity, and he asks for the double. In case you want to kill him, he published all this data in his personal internet harddrive, and sets up a script to publish all of it on his blog if he doesn't cancel it in 14 days.
      j) Instead he blackmails your g/f and asks her to pose naked for him, or else he'll tell your wife. THEN he uses your credit card to setup a website, giving away the video of your g/f AND publishing your name (just because he felt like it!).
      k) He gives the laptop (with wireless internet) to a hacker friend of his, and do all kinds of nasty illegal stuff.
      l) Among the nasty illegal stuff, he defaces the PowerPizza website, mentioning how they made money with the laptop they stole thinking it was a pizza.
      m) He writes all these experiences in his blog and the Hollywood guys buy him the script for "Home alone 4: Pizza Powered".
      n) All of the above. The possibilities are endless!

      Lesson: DON'T use the powerpizza box. It's not worth it.

      You can't trust thieves to do too much thinking. Years ago, I worked as a stagehand in London on a farce called No Sex Please We're British (better than it sounds...). One weekend a thief stole a television set and several bottles of booze off the stage. Of course they were all props. What a disappointing evening that must have been.

      Sorry I just have to call ya on this one, never happen. I might give you that if we weren't talking about the stoned kid the grandparrent post mentioned.       Nobody actually says 'snog'. Well, I certinally wouldn't and nobody around me would! (I am a teenage Brit).

      "Nappy" is pretty much always used, but I like 'diaper' is starting to replace it, with all this Americanization. I don't like either words very much, to be honest.

      And I think more people drink Coffee than Tea, really. I, for one, hate Tea.

      Consulting the English-to-American Dictionary, I see this entry:

      When you have to explain something funny, it it obviously wasted on the person to whom you have to explain it to. We were playing on some words that have different meanings between english in Engalnd and English in America. Pissed happens to be one of those. Being 'pissed' in England means to be drunk, being 'pissed' in America means to be upset. Two very different meanings depending on what continent you happen to utter the word. THAT is what we were playing with. Not that the word means both things, but that it's utterance in different places means different things. Get it now?

      The all-night pizza place at my alma mater was so bad that we considered throwing away the contents and eating the box instead. It couldn't taste any worse and the box wasn't quite as greasy as the pie.

      This fine establishment was also routinely closed by the Health Department and burned down at least once. I sometimes marvel that I survived college.

    I normally keep my laptop in a Targus backpack. This way it's easy to transport and not as easily forgotten.

    While the pizza box concept is neat to a point I can't imagine putting all the items I need into it and it doesn't seem to be designed for it. Really, who only carries their laptop in their laptop bag?

      I only carry mine in a laptop bag (Targus, of course, good taste). I like backpacks, and they are comfortable, but usually I'm only going from my office to my car & then from my car to my house with my laptop so it's not inconvenient for me to use the traditional bag. It would probably be MORE of a pain to use a backpack.

      When I travel I carry a "regular" backpack with my "personal" stuff & some clothes as a carry-on so that I don't get screwed if they lose my luggage for a day or two, so the laptop backpack doesn't really work for me there either.

      I could certainly see cases where the backpack style of carry would be better (students, pros who do lots of travelling, etc), but for my needs the regular bag is great. As far as forgetting it, well, for what my Thinkpad cost I won't be forgetting it - ever.

      The pizza box thing just doesn't turn my crank at all but hey, who am I to deny this sort of thing to those who want it? For my needs it's utterly useless but I could see it being a great gag gift for the geek who has it all...

      Well, you don't have to feel THAT sorry for me. I have to admit that when it comes to taste in food I always liked the big mass-production products. I will also admit that it is in fact the freshly made products (in this case pizza) which have more taste to them and I haven't got a tasteorgan evolved enough to notice. I guess the same goes for the fact that I also prefer the MC-D's burger over many others, although you will probably publicly hang me for saying that as well.

      Let's see, we have 'Donatello's' (which isn't a big franchise I think) which is ok. I think Domino's is good. 'Al Capone's' wasn't the one time I tried and that's about it.

      Pizza arrived 8.45pm. Almost cold.

      Delivery boy had to go back to the shop to authorize the credit card as he couldn't do it. 20 minutes later, sign slip.

      Pizza (one of the new ones with the cheese layer in the middle) tasted like cardboard, was now cold, and cost about 50% more than the pizza hut a mile away...

      Domino's 555 deal is really good...especially when a bunch of us want pizzas. We get together 6 or so people and order 6 medium pizzas...ends up to be somethin like 33 bucks with tax....charge everyone 6 bucks (plus tip)...and you've got a nice late night snack.

      I think it's a mistake to automatically associate pro-life with being not liberal. I consider myself to be a liberal. I also consider myself to be a fairly logical person. (As a scientist I kinda have to be.) So as a logical extension of my liberal attitudes, I believe that depriving unborn babies of this basic human right to life is wrong. I have listened to the arguments of the so called 'pro-choice' crowd, and I have to say that their arguments leave my unconvinced. The reason this is so is because, as a scientist, I know that every single one of those arguments is based on a false premise.

      I do remember several articles in the Ann Arbor news about this issue, and while I can't quote anything verbatim, I do know Dominoes lost a lot of business in the area and a few of their shops even closed down as a result. Surveys were conducted, and in the final summary, Ann Arbor had far more pro-choice residents than pro-life.

      As a side note, I made the Pro-Choice == Liberal assumption because it's consistent with the majority of my experiences and the people I've known. Most of the Pro-Choice people I know have been moderate to liberal while most the pro-life people I've known have been Conservative. Mind you, I didn't say ALL. I fully acknowledge that my experiences, and media portrayals are not necessarily reflective of reality, and even if the assumption holds true for most cases, there will be exceptions, even sizable ones.

      If you've eaten part of the pizza, and/or the pizza is not freshly goopy, and/or the pizza's toppings are relatively firmly affixed to the crust, this is not a problem.

      One New Year's, a friend and I took a half a pizza into a movie theatre, with the box tucked securely under my arm. We got some weird looks (one employee almost walked into a customer while she was looking at me) but no one said anything, and the pizza remained in excellent eating condition.

      I still remember my ex bumping her Packard Hell and seeing the screen go nuts, as the video RAM had fallen out again. There were no clips or friction to hold it in place.     Really, how hard is it to pick up a nice black leather or blastic nylon bag that isn't plastered with "TARGUS" logos and just KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE DAMN LAPTOP?

    I've owned many laptops for many years and I've never once come close to having it nicked because I tend to pay attention to my surroundings when I'm carrying it with me.

      According to a lot of sources, The Bible is the most frequently stolen book (followed by "The Joy of Sex").

      I understand what you're saying, though. It's not entirely unlike telling your name to your kidnapper or a mugger. If they see you as a human being or have even the remotest sympathy for your situation, it reduces your chances of being physically harmed.

      Of course, churches get robbed anyway. So while it might work on some would-be criminals, it certainly wouldn't deter everyone.

      My brother-in-law used to operate under the same theory. He went to Boston College, and would park his Jeep in front of a statue of Mary outside of a church near his apartment in Random Student Ghetto, Chestnut Hill MA.

      It took about six months for his radio, discman, and all his CDs -- which were in the center console, not lying on a seat or anything -- to be stolen.

      He didn't bother with a particular parking spot too much after that.

    I had a machine stolen about three months ago, and notified the local police. It was running the GMail notifier (that checks mail on bootup), so I emailed Google from my gmail account and told them: "The only machine running the GMail notifier keyed to *account name* was recently stolen. From now on, if someone logs into this gmail account, they're doing it from a stolen machine; could you give the IP address to the local police so they can track it down?

    GMail wouldn't do it, even though there's no threat to user privacy here: the police are the only ones getting information, and that information was requested by the owner of the account.

    That got me thinking: someone (laptop manufacturers) should run a phone-home service, that keeps a log of the IP addresses that send in requests (with an authentication string specific to the user or computer). That way, using that same string and a password, you could get a list of all the IP addresses your machine has connected to the Internet from... which could be turned over to the police if necessary. If you trust the site explicitly, you could even run an applet that will respond to remote instructions (including flashing the BIOS with a "THIS IS STOLEN PROPERTY" message on bootup) when the site's notified that it is stolen. Once laptops start including onboard GPS, this would make recovery a snap.

    This won't do anything to deter sophisticated thieves, who will start formatting drives, but it would be cheap to implement and would provide another layer of protection from theft.

      After two company notebooks were stolen (We're 99% sure it was a certain employee, but have no proof), I started installing DirectUpdate on all the notebooks, updating a record on dyndns.org that corresponds to the computer name. The software is running as a service and there's no start menu, desktop, or system tray icons. Basically, the users are unaware of the softwares existence. If a notebook is ever stolen or gone missing and is connected to an internet connection and booted, I'll be able to track it down and prosecute.

      So you want computer manufacturers to monitor and record the locations of the laptops they sell, just in case one gets stolen someday? Something just doesn't sound right about that.

      Privacy concerns aside, it sounds like a support nightmare for computer manufacturers too. The extra cost of tracking every laptop they make would drive laptop prices back up, just when they're getting low enough for me to buy one for myself.

      Also, as you pointed out, this just isn't going to work against people who know what they're doing. The man who steals your laptop in the airport (for example. If that's where yours was stolen, it wasn't me!) doesn't want it so he can get online. He wants quick money for it. And those people will learn to just format the machines and sell them without ever getting them on the internet. You might eventually recover your computer, but your data will be long gone, and so will the thief.

      Your best bet for not getting your laptop stolen is just don't let go of it in public. Don't let it out of your sight, and if someone suspicious approaches, shoot to kill.

      Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Social engineering is a big threat for companies like Google. Anybody can get a police report. All you have to do is call up the police and lie to them.

      There was actually an article in the Fall 2004 issue of 2600 that discussed a shell script to do something very similar. It would check in periodically to a particular web address, and execute a command contained on that web page. So if your laptop ever gets stolen, you have both a record of the thief's IP address and a means to execute commands locally. Pretty interesting.

      You could write a small java / C# / VBScript ap that just sends packets out or you could rig it to send SMTP (which records IP) which of course you will let it do. The main thing is GPS though. Cause even if you have an IP address you just get the location of the ISP not the laptop. And most likely if you have a DUN installed or using a local hotspot it wont help.

      As long as the script runs *quietly* they may play with the laptop long enough to get a GPS signal and email your self with lat/long of the location. Since there is low over head to send it you could send one evrey 30-60secs with out drawing too much attention.

      Having the manufacturer build this into the BIOS would be sweet!! with a pass lock and security like IBM has for thier laptops.

      Assuming you're running a *nix system: Make a PHP/Perl/Python/etc. script that logs the client IP address to a file on a server somewhere. Now, put a cron job on your system that runs "curl -o /dev/null http://www.someserver.com/yourscript.php" to "phone home" and track the IP activity. You can even make it smart enough to only record a new IP address and resolve the IP to a (relatively close... if by close you mean state-wide) geographic location. (credit goes to 2600 magazine for this one)

      There's nothing at all wrong with it, as long as the consumer is willing to pay for it.

      What would make sense is if the consumer wants to buy into a "protection plan", then they'd pay X dollars per year and upon request, the company would be able to tell the registered owner (or his/her local police, if regional privacy laws forbid disclosing this sort of information to someone other than them) where the laptop is at the current time.

      And this sort of protection would be built into the hardware, not merely a device driver that could be removed as easily as reformatting the hard drive.

      Not that i've ever handled stolen property but if I were in that situation, i would boot it up SANS network, just to see that it worked - look for interesting docs - and then whipe it.

      If your dumb enough to plug a stolen laptop onto the net without formatting it, you have no business stealing laptops in the first place. This also goes for trying to sell whole laptops on ebay. Im pretty sure you could get away with parts.

      I believe toshiba reserves the first few years where they will not even service your laptop without running the serial numbers. thats your best defense.

      Apparently ASUS is developing a laptop board that will (optionally, but password protected) automatically deliver it's IP on bootup to an ASUS server for just this purpose. They will work with you to get it recovered if you report it stolen to them. As it's on board, even if the drive is wiped it'll still work. Don't really know what happens if they reset the BIOS, but presumably you're screwed - I suspect it does rely on the thief not being technologically terribly literate, which is likely a good bet.

    Interesting that they put an Apple TiBook, which is the most scratch-sensitive laptop ever. There's even special paint to cover the scratches. Now look at those straps (in the flash movie on their site). Will obviously cause scratches. Straps for laptops = bad, unless you got an ugly DELL with stickers all over it.

    This is really old news now, I saw it a long time ago and decided to make my own, with a twist. Instead of a pizza box I took a box file (for holding documents), lined it with furniture foam and my 12" iBook, mouse and power brick fit snigly inside. What's more the whole thing can also fit in a rucksack.

    Pointless for anti-theft, but looks like it could be usefull for social engineering. Showing up at someone's office building with a laptop and saying "hey, can I plug into your internal network for a few minutes?" isn't likely to have too much success. Your chances are much better if you show up with 1) a tool belt and CWA polo shirt, 2) a pizza box, or 3) a cleaning cart and a complete inability to speak english.

    Of course, the real hilarity ensues when you bring your pizza box with a laptop in it with you to the airport...

    Dumbest product, but best idea in the world. I can buy a Little Caesars Pizza for $5 USD. I can probably get enough foam, straps, and hot glue for another $5 USD to do AT LEAST 5 boxes. Shipping will be cheap because all the parts weight so little. We're talking ~$8 USD

    Not only do you make profit on every one, you get free food. If someone would hire me to do one of these a day, I'd never have to worry about food again. I imagine the entire "case" takes about 15 minutes to make (excluding pizza eating time), and it will even have grease stains on the outside to give it an authentic feel. Free food for relativly no work = good idea.

    But, I'm betting those are bulk-purchased boxes w/o a real brand name (as that might come into legal issues). Assuming they actually sell as many as they bought the profit is going to be very large, even at $12 USD. All this for a non-custom case that is bigger than most laptops and pretty shoddy looking. I guess you get what you pay for.

    As a former Pizza delivery person (Hello Mamma's in Edinburgh !), I can guarantee that an unsecured pizza box is far more likely to be stolen on a Friday night after the pubs turn out than an unsecured laptop bag.

    The thief wants pizza, is fairly confident that the Pizza company is too busy to report the theft and in all likelihood would never dream of stealing a laptop.

      I'm afraid I'd have to agree with you. Pizza is a far cheaper commodity, and the value of some objects is much more a deterrent to thieves if they are of HIGHER value than a lesser value. The only people this would really keep from stealing your laptop are professional theives that like a bigger score.

    Try looking up nTracker. Our company was considering it after we had a laptop stolen. Basically, like you said, it makes the laptop phone home periodically, in this case doing so via Email. As always, a sophisticated thief will get by it, but with proper protections (turning off booting from anything but the harddrive), no one should be able to get in to change anything without a proper password. Sure, they can dyke the harddrive, but that's always a risk with computer thefts. Meh, our company dropped the idea after looking at the costs involved, but it seems a reasonable enough investment for a private individual.

    If all you're looking for is a way to keep tabs on a machine's IP#, there's a very simple way of doing it that comes w/ some other benefits as well:
    use a dynamic DNS service.
    Like http://www.cjb.net/ and http://www.dyndns.com/

    You go to their site, create a DNS entry for your machine with your current IP#.

    Then you make a small script to connect to those sites and update that IP# and set that script to run at startup.

    The result is if your machine is on DHCP or moves around a lot (or gets stolen), you'll know its current IP# (or at least it's most recent IP#).

    Here's an idea, grow some balls for crying out loud.

    Thieves, like predator animals, look for the easy mark. What I'm trying to say is that if you look like a victim, you will become one. You also should not try to attract attention to yourself by carrying something suspicious like this.

    Confidence and common sense are your best defences against theft. Don't look like you are afraid of getting mugged and don't leave your laptop unattended in plain view (put it in your car trunk instead of the back seat).

    I always either use a Targus laptop bag or messenger bag to carry my powerbook around without any fear of getting mugged. I just make sure to not leave my bag unattended.

    I also travel without fear with my ipod with white ear buds. Maybe it helps to have the attitude of a bad ass and to look like one too. I've never ever been mugged in my life or had any fear of being mugged.

    My advice would be to go to the gym and bulk up and learn some basic self defence to build up your confidence. This also works wonders for attracting the ladies.

    That's what I use. AFAIK one of them is unbreakable or unbreakable to any realistic level of real world efort.

    At least the data will be protected. If the machine is not, oh well, that's what insurance is for.

    There are a few companies that sell explosive CDs a-la Mission Impossible. I'm sure someone could rig up a program that fires one off in the machine unless a password is entered on a regular interval. If not then the machine immolates itself. Or something like that.

    I got the impression this sort of protection was intended for storage at home when you aren't carting it around. So if a thief breaks in, he's not likely to consider the contents of what appears to be a pizza box as something worth nicking. Having had my home broken into once, I can tell you that these sorts of people are just looking for either cash or else things that are small and easy to carry and valuable enough to quickly sell.

    Your dogshit box idea reminds me of something my roommate did a few years back. I had just bought a house from the estate of an old man who had died some years back. There were all kinds of personal effects scattered around the attic, garage, etc. As we sorted through these rooms, we hoped to find something exciting like an old pistol or maybe a hidden wad of cash. At one point, my roommate brought down these boxes from the garage attic labelled "Rags." I asked him what he was going to do with them.     Pizza Boxes are made of cardboard which is not known for it's conductive property's. Also computer motherboards run on 3.3v to 5v which is not enough to even at 20 amps of current to throw a notable spark anywhere.

    I doubt thieves are looking for text-books when they steal bags.

    First: Unless they knew the titles in the bag for a fact, the low probability of being in the same class and needing the books would make random bag-pilfering for textbooks uneconomic risk/reward wise. Reselling the textbooks is difficult when they probably have marks inside identifying the real owner. Someone who just had their textbooks stolen would be a typical customer of a thief who just stole them and would recognise the copy that was stolen.

    A thief who would steal textbooks purely for the random knowledge they might contain is hard to imagine.

    Inside bags: Wallets, Gizmos/Cds/Laptops/PDAS/Pens/Pencils/theBagItself/ KeysToStuff/Graphing Calculators/Clothes/Prescription Drugs/Illegal Drugs/etc.

    Wallets full of Ca$h, Expensive Gizmos, Illegal Drugs and Prescription Drugs that can get you high would most likely top the list of goodies that would most please a thief that stole a bag to find therein. The rest is not that interesting financially.

    The Technics Deck Bag is great for carrying laptops. It's padded, has lots of pockets and comes in camo (listed above) or black. It's meant to hold around 30 LPs and is an interesting alternative to regular laptop cases/backpacks. Of course, it still somewhat screams "steal me" as it says Technics on the outside.

    I really think thats how this thing was born. I think some slob with a trashcan for a car just started stashing his laptop in one of the many discarded pizza boxes strewn about.     Just very overpriced

    When I was in NYC using the free wi-fi access in Bryant Park (my favourite place in NYC incidentaly), I was extremely concious of sitting in a public place with over $1000 of tablet PC sat on my lap. A pizza box would help disuise the laptop from any casual observer.

    But at the end of the day, I would probably buy a pizza and keep the box rather than pay around $20 for a cardbox box.

    Their pizzas are very middle-of-the-road. Nice pizzas, slightly larger, from non-chain pizzerias typically run to about AUD$12-16 apiece.

    I mail out laptops frequently for service, and I have to say the mailers we use put that pizza box to shame. First off, it has ZERO protection around the edges. If you're going to drop something shaped like that, the odds that it lands dead flat on top or bottom is close to nil - it's going to land on edge, and the laptop is just going to slide right to the edge (strap or no strap) and spiderweb your LCD as the only thing between it and concrete is 3mm of cardboard.

    Second issue is the thickness of the box. You'll notice they have a tibook in there in the ads... that's about the THINNEST laptop made. A 1.75" thick pizza box with 1" of padding (estimates, sue me if I'm wrong) leaves 0.75" of space for the laptop, unless you want it to bulge. This case just isn't practical for anything but a mac powerbook. Even the ibook would be pushing it to fit into the case with the lid shut.

    That, and sooner or later SOMEONE is going to prank you and hide your laptop, and you're going to open that box up and find...

    I don't know - I tried to be real careful with the first one, but that cup of cream and sugar (well, it had some coffee in it) shorted the video leads and fried the motherboard (genuine tears shed, there). Damn thing didn't last a week. I'm all callus and devil-may-care with the biatches, now. They like it when you slap 'em a little bit around once in awhile... *flex* *belch* *big shiteating grin*
