Video of Fedora On PS3
klippoth writes, "I just thought I would let you guys know, not only do I have Fedora Core 5 for PPC installed on my Playstation 3, but I video-captured running through the boot loader to demonstrate how it works. And yes, I am selling the PS3 on Ebay, although that was not my original intention. But hearing about people making ten grand... well, let's just say my love for my PS3 is NOT unconditional. Metal Gear Solid 4 doesn't come out for another year anyway! (Although it seems that sales of PS3s are starting to slow down... oh well, I can think of worse things to be stuck with!!)"
Get back to me when you have a beowolf cluster going.
Is this an article about how functional Linux on PS3 is? Or is it intended to spark discussion about PS3 sales on eBay?
The ______ Agenda
I wish I was a subscriber. This is by far the most blatant slashvertisment I've ever seen. It should be tagged as such.
Oh man, way to get advertising for your nerdy eBay sale on the busiest nerd blog in the universe, for free. I don't blame you for trying, but nonetheless, a part of me has died inside.
Oops, I may already be a troll.
Even as you read this, your pants are strangling your loins! Aaa!
He must mean boots ...
LOL. More like $500.
So what works under fedora? Ethernet? Wifi cards (usb ones at least)? How about more than 640x480 resolution? Output to an actual monitor? Video and sound? It would be nice to have some basic questions answered.
My first and foremost question is whether the framebuffer driver that comes with Yellow Dog/RH5 fast enough to do video playback. If yes, PS3/Linux would make an awesome media center.
Using Linux instead of the native media player would be pretty much mandatory, since the built-in one won't uprez DVDs to 1080 -- if rumors are to be believed. Otherwise, since the Sony abstraction layer doesn't allow direct access to the GPU, Linux on the PS3 is just a big useless gimmick. The box is way too expensive for text-only purposes (except perhaps for researchers who just gotta have a cell CPU).
I'm not used to Fedore startup scripts, (Slacware user) it seems fast, but don't know how fast it is compared to a x86 PC..
;)
He should have opened some OpenOffice app
Is it normal that his FC5 lags so badly?
Does it always take 1-2 seconds to re-draw the menu icons?
And what's with the qvga desktop resolution, bad videocard drivers?
Obama likes poor people so much, he wants to make more of them.
The market has settled down around $1,200 since yesterday, although you can still find some obviously scammed auction up in the $2,000+ range. Hell, one analyst is predicting a drop to sub-$1,000 tomorrow. The resale demand just isn't there to support the 90% of people who bought PS3s just to flood ebay with them.
That guy is clearly not a linux user, or even a Windows power user. The one useful piece of info I got from that was that it boots and loads KDE quite fast. Some benchmarks would have been nice. Compiling some Cell code on the SDK would have been nicer.

I've noticed that shortly after the release the prices for PS3s on eBay dropped sharply so much that you can pick one up for less than $1000 if your observant. Basically with over a hundred thousand PS3s on eBay the prices were bound to drop.
Oh and taking it out of the box and using it will definitely cause the price you can sell it for to go down even more.
http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-PS3.html/
They claim to get "Supercomputer speeds" out of the PS3 - can anyone confirm this? How many points-per-day can it really do?
...Also, I didn't know Buggalo could fly.
You could send him an eBay question to find out for sure, but I'm guessing it's because he needed a lower resolution to make the desktop visible on the video. If I'm not mistaken, Youtube videos are qvga (or at least close) making a qvga desktop a better choice. Had he shown a 1080i desktop, all you would have seen was a few splotches on a huge field of blue.

I like how the maroon talking over this is discussing that it is "compiling the kernel" as the fedora boot messages flow past.
Check out ioquake3.org for a great, free, First-Person Shooter engine!
But does it run Windows?
You have tried to support your argument with faulty reasoning! Go directly to jail; do not pass Go, do not collect $200!
BogoMips dammit!!!
This same guy has been posting this in most PS3 threads lately. He adds to it now that PS3 is out but it's pretty well a form letter.
Why do fanboys feel such need to defend a freakin' company who's in it for money?
- "Scientia non habet inimicum nisp ignorantem"
If I had known the message I sent in was going to be printed verbatim, I think I would have been smart enough to include a link to my Ebay auction...as it is, I could throw a plug down here but it would get buried in no time. As a note though, I actually went through a lot to get that captured, voiced, cleaned up, composited, etc, so I think if I do get any decent price out of this, I earned it more than the guy who threw in a free candy bar. As a side note, I did learn an awful lot about compositing... So as far as Linux goes, I haven't had any luck with the Network yet, but then again, the Optical drive won't mount and I seem to lack any audio as well. That being said, I am currently re-loading the unit, and this time I am vid-capturing that as well, since a lot of people have asked how this was done. Hopefully I'll have that vid up tomorrow. Personally, this makes for a great exercise in Linux troubleshooting, but I really can't wait for Yellow Dog Linux to come out, seeing as how it is optimized for the PS3. I expect excellent results. Where video quality is concerned, I am capturing it on my old (like way old) MythTV box, so to start with, it's not the best, having an ATI AIW 9000 in it. And since that card doesn't support HD, it's running through a good old-fashioned composite cable. On top of that, Youtube asks that vids be resized to 320x240, so you can do the math. You're lucky it's legible at all. That was really late at night when I did that, so trust me, "Compiling the Kernel" is not that bad....as close as I was to passing out, I'm amazed I didn't refer to its "Registry" or "Guru Meditation Error"....
Console launches are becoming more and more like IPOs than anything else. Except that you can't do as much with stock certificates. But then again, stock certificates don't spontaneously overheat and combust.
IIRC, Sony hasn't released/created (whatever the case may be) video drivers for Linux yet. I believe you have to use the framebuffer (or something like that, it's late), but I think I remember hearing that you can still output up to 1080i.
Honesty may be the best policy, but by process of elimination, dishonesty is the second best policy.
If anyone's interested, the sale is here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=0 15&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&viewitem=&item=2500 51615791&rd=1&rd=1
At first I was impressed when it was just compiling the kernel, but when I realized there was the typical gnome interface like in ubuntu complete with the clicking button for switching desktops I was blown away.
He's a fanboy with proper spelling and grammar? Not likely. He's probably in it for the money too.
Oh Noes!! A company that wants to make money, will the madness ever end!?!
there was Slashdot article on Friday with links to how to do it.

download FC5 PPC DVD,
download the addon's disk (theres some detailed instructions on it too)

and install.
You can find more detailed instructions in various places on the net
In a about a week you'll be able to buy Yellow Dog 5.0 for the PS3, supposedly it has 1 click install.

I really don't know why you're so skeptical, this is not the first game console from Sony that supports LInux, officially mind you, this isn't some sort of hack.
There's a few non Linux users with PS3's who have been walkthroughed the Fedora install on various message boards, just so the Linux guys without PS3's can ask them questions.
How about posting about the Wii launch? :)
Minti: What's that huge shuriken in your back?! Kin: It's the instrument of my victory.
I don't pretend to be "1337" (since you want to use "noob"), I just know how to follow directions. I'm still learning about Linux and thought this would be a fun project, so it'd be kinda cool if you could not be all negative about it. I know it wasn't "compiling the kernel", that was a bad habit of an unexperienced tongue that was too tired too realize what I said, and too lazy to fix it once I realized. As far as the "GUI" is concerned, well, GUI = Graphical User Interface. Any software can have a Graphical User Interface. A Graphical User Interface is an interface that isn't text based. Tell me where I'm going wrong here...
If I was the fanboy you claim me to be, I wouldn't tell you that i'm on my 2nd 360 after having one die with 3 red lights, or that I plan on buying a PS3 and Wii as soon as I don't have to get a second mortgage to do so?
- "Scientia non habet inimicum nisp ignorantem"
The boot/install other OS feature is in the Cross Media bar interface, so yes, it's relatively easy. I've read that you can actually set it so that Linux becomes the default boot environment, which will be a heck of a lot more convenient (when I finally get a PS3) than on the PS2 which requires the "magic" RTE DVD to boot into Linux from being turned off.
Someone who can use Linux can install it on their own PS3. Someone who can use Linux and bought the auction item would reinstall the OS anyway. Someone who can't use Linux and buys this won't get a whole lot of use out of it will they?
What a dumbass auction.
But then again, stock certificates don't spontaneously overheat and combust.
Yeah, tell that to anybody that had stock in Enron.
I've been testing PS3 at SCEA for quite a few months now, and I'm not sure about the retail units (we have a special testing units), but there is a means right from the PS3 menu to setup multiple operating systems, with a partitioning tool included in it.
So I have to say I'm as impressed with this story as I was when I received a link from someone detailing the success of someone who thought he was newsworthy by replacing the stock hard drive, as if it wasn't designed to be replaceable.
When spoken the abbreviation GUI is said "gooey" not G U I. Don't worry. I once had someone laughing away with the way I said Abit (the motherboard maker).
This video doesn't show anything interesting.

After boot there was a console, I wanted to see
Then author just move mouse cursor over menu and read menu items, like he never seen it bfore.
Everything looks quite lame.
Wasn't the Wii released in the US yesterday? I haven't seen anything about it here on /., or anywhere else for that matter (but I haven't been looking very hard). Or is everyone just busy playing Zelda? :)

I see no steps. this is 3 minutes of a tour of fedora. I know how to use it! Show me how to load it on a ps3.
and furthermore batman, what driver compatibility is there? oh, none? well then, pretty useless for the time being? or what?
see all these questions are being asked because none are answered in the googletube! c'mon man! don't let us hang like this!
Who is that masked man?
I know! People have been telling the new to Linux people installing it on the PS3's to create non-root users, but they're so eager to try it out and the guru's so eager to ask tons of questions that it doesn't get done.
GUI = Gee You Eye GNU = Gee Enn You SCSI = Skizzy SQL = Ess Queue Ell People must be pissing themselves laughing at me. But I don't care.

Buy it now! $5,000 USD. lol0bids. That is all.
exactly the point.
go to ebay, pick one up for a hundred dollar premium right now.
wait a few more, the market is flooded.
the problem was that people were not buying the ps3 for themselves, they were buying it to resell. the market has corrected.
check the prices...all of the prices.
they are quite reasonable (compared to the retail price of the ps3)
The phrase "more better" is acceptable English. suck it grammar Nazis
OMG! PWNIES!
The PS3 speculators are already in trouble. Sure, a few idiots paid $10,000 on day zero, but that's over. Auctions of unsold PS3 systems at bloated prices are now getting zero bids. There are "Buy it Now" prices of $3000, but reality is that units are going unsold at $1100. A sale of the 20GB unit just just occured at $925. Then at $840. One seller writes "I waited over 30 hours in walmart so you don't have to!" He got $780.
The original poster should hang onto his PS3. He's not going to make much money selling it. If you want a PS3, one will be available tomorrow. And the next day. And the day after that. At a modest premium over retail.
Do you pronounce "CLI" as "klee"?

I agree. I've been asked what Linux on the PS2 looks like and I say: It looks like Linux, RH6 to be precise, (though I've got plenty installed that isn't included in the base distro)
/proc/cpuinfo and then posted a screenshot. Showed to hardware threads for the Cell, running at 3.2 GHz as we know. I think it was in one of the Linux threads on ps3forums.com
I'd swear there was someone somewhere who did a cat
I sure would like to personally see more info about performance. First thing I'd do is switch to XFCE or fluxbox.
How come he boots into linux and then try to show the world the GNOME desktop which looks the same everywhere anyway.
/proc/meminfo or /proc/cpuinfo - looks like a fake to me?

FC5 is not optimized for the PS3. It isn't even using all of the Cell's cores. Wait until YellowDog Linux 5.0 for PS3, which will be optimized, comes out. Apparently Sony provided them with dev boxes so they have been working on it for a while. That will be the one to test, not FC5.
God, its not redundant, its a obvious take on the "does it run linux" that pops up as +5 all the damn time. And no, its not my post.

1.ad ? buy my ebay product ? 2.information that ps3 has capability to run linux 3.youtube? world first ps3 hack ? but then after some googling "...Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 will be the first Linux distribution to run officially on PlayStation 3, using Fedora Core 5..." i lost my interest... so no news here ... ppl go on there is nothing to watch shoo ...
Wow parent is spreading major FUD; go troll somewhere else. I'm not sure what you mean by "1-2 seconds to redraw the menu icons", but it's kinda hard for a system to display an icon before it has it in memory. If you notice at 1:44-45, when he moves the mouse back up to 'Accessories' after he's already been there, the icons are drawn instantly. The first time it took them time to show because they had to load from the HDD.
All the stories about the PS3 launch and sellouts, and not one about the Wii.
I'm not sure what every country is like, but the Wii sold out up here in Canada in MINUTES. Nintendo shipped many times as many units and still couldn't meet demand. Stores all over are scrambling to put up "sold out" signs as they're sick of customer #3000 coming in and asking.
Looks like Nintendo has one hell of a winner on its hands, and I don't see any news coverage at all. The lineups here started overnight and not even half the people in line at 7am got one - and this is with 5-10x as many units shipped as Sony.
If Nintendo actually meets their target of 4 million units by xmas, and this isn't just a fluke, they're going to dominate this generation at least until Sony can get their production issues sorted out.
Endless arguments over trivial contradictions in books written by ignorant savages to explain thunder in the dark.

That's great that you've showed us how fedora look like, but I think most of us already seen Fedora-Core (1 version or another) works but what about posting some interesting information output in terminal such as
lspci, lsmod, meminfo, df, cpuinfo, or some more informative information.
also, how does it handle a non-ppc version? will it even be able to be loadable? lol I think it will lag so much (at least in fedora) that the smoke will come out from the PS3
Get the cells running under linux first. For now, as far as I am aware, they are just lying there not doing anything useful under linux. (and for the funny part my little filthy hands are itching to get my hands on ether one of those or G80 - I have some AI workloads to throw at that shit :P (isn't this the primary reason why the availability is so low - they all are already installed in some secret governments basement to form the next skynet (now that Google has proven to be too intelligent to actually do something about us)).
And then of course for general purpose use there is a problem who will write some useful software for them. I have a hunch that no-once - all people on earth that have even the slightest clue as to what to do with them are ether senile academics or busy at inventing new and new swearwords while working on the next Big FPS.
Since when were init scripts drivers? ....Also, I have my doubts the shown release of fedora compiles the kernel on boot, and that fast!

Actually, enron took many months to fall. I don't mean to sound like an ass, but a simple sell-on-stop order would have protected against catastrophic losses (same with Nortel). That doesn't excuse the management of these companies from the fraud they were involved in, but I'm pointing out that market prices for things like stocks don't spontaneously evaporate. Even though there are large 'gaps' in price sometimes, usually a catastrophic price change such as Nortel from $100 down to $1 takes months, even years to happen
Thanks for being very hurtful. I didn't post any links to my auction. I knew already that any mention of that would be buried. I was just showing "proof-of-concept", and I did not once claim to engineer this feat nor do I pretend to be a very experienced Gnome/Fedora user. This was not meant as advertising, and I had no clue that the editors at slashdot would print my post verbatim. But if it were an ad, one would have a link, wouldn't one? I just wanted to show my fellow PS3 enthusiasts something they can do with the system. You really suck. I get to go to sleep with your thoughts in my head. Have a nice day.
What the hell? "compiles" the kernel? maybe fast scrolling text is always compiling to you! :D
IT COMPILES THE KERNEL OR IT GETS THE HOSE AGAIN!

A bit harsh perhaps. Apologies. But for a tech site it was a fairly worthless article - no offense. Just thinking there could be countless better videos to be made of the PS3. As this is a geek site, you can replace moron with non-geek which for 95% of the population is a compliment. Hope you feel better.
How about SCUBA, do you pronounce it S. C. U. B. A.? How about NASA? If the acronym lends itself to pronunciation, then say it as a word. If not, then don't. NSA, USO, or CLI, for example.
Don't steal. The government hates competition.
First off, this wasn't meant for you. This was put together for Playstation 3 enthusiasts, not "been-there done-that" Linux snobs that apparently just want to eviscerate me for making screen cap before they did. Not all of the hardware is showing up properly, so I'm not about to test the system, it has to be fixed first. Second, I don't care if people know Fedora is Linux. Refer to point one on who this video was made for. The same people that may not understand the usefulness of Linux and need to be sold on it with software they understand, in a language they understand. I know how to capture just fine. Buy me better gear. I am taking my video direct from an ATI All In Wonder capture card. Looking at you Point #5, I think you were looking at some other guy's video, because I DON'T OWN ANY CAMCORDER! IT WAS CAPTURED DIRECTLY IN A COMPUTER! Get your facts straight. Look for videos by me - klippoth. Not just any random basement shot crap videos you can dig up by strangers. I wasn't in this for marketing, I am in this to inform and excite fellow PS3 owners with the potential of thier console. Call me crazy or evil or whatever, but if I were a marketing whore, I would have included a link. - And now to point 5... LOOK AT MY VIDEO AGAIN! MINE!! NOT SOMEONE ELSE'S! I HAVE NO BASEMENT (2ND FLOOR APARTMENT)! I CAPTURE STRAIGHT INTO COMPUTER BECAUSE I HAVE NO INTEREST IN BEING ON SCREEN UNTIL I LOOK LIKE A MALE MODEL! MY ROOM IS RED! THE LIGHTS ARE ON! BECAUSE GUESS WHAT - YOU ARE WATCHING A VIDEO BY SOME KID NAMED HALISTER!! Idiot...

I hold very few opinions. I hold information based on observation and fact. If you wish to disagree, please use facts.
GUI isn't alone. Off the top of my head:
Jay-peg instead of J.P.E.G.
Scuzzy instead of S.C.S.I.
Wine instead of W.I.N.E.
Ram and rom instead of R.A.M. and R.O.M.
Guh-noo instead of G.N.U.
People usually only use the letters when it is unpronouncable (PCMCIA) or the official pronounciation is just too silly (Ping for PNG anyone?)
That having been said, I also find Gooey to be a little odd.
Mr. Period: Nine is the one that's right by ten!

I'd like to think I'm a geek, but a good deal of my geekiness is pencil-and-paper rpgs, another chunk is video games, quite a bit is PCs and windows in general, and I am currently trying to expand further into open-source, considering some of the bad moves by M$ lately. But a crowd like this really make me not want to associate in any way with the Linux crowd... The article was to show PS3 enthusiasts what potential their newly purchased system had, and at the same time explain in layman's terms the appeal of Linux (and that it is full of applications that are rather familiar - not scary at all). It wasn't meant to bore the snobbish Linux crowd, nor was the hours of work compositing video and editing sound meant to make me feel like a horrible person and want to just cry myself to sleep.
No one reads the links anyway in slashdot stories.
That's ok. Good effort nontheless. If you want to improve i suggest going to a terminal and typing things like lspci, dmesg, cpuinfo, meminfo etc... I think what everyone would really like is a copy of /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Post these (for example type "dmesg > file.txt", then copy them to a flash card) somewhere and you earn your geek cards.
I ought to let you know, I was only using your post as an example of shit editorial. I have no intention of getting a PS3 or looking at the hardware. Kudos for getting linux on it though.

I'll do that...and thanks for being nice... I needed someone to be at this point.

Only idiots put all their 401k money into their firms stock.
Since only 60% was in Enron stock (which was likely discounted) that means 40% wasn't.
So who is to blame because these employees were foolish enough to buy ONLY Enron stock for their retirement? The taxpayers?
If you're not smart enough to diversify, then you're probably not going to be smart enough to manage retirement wealth. I love the 51 year old 'exec' who lost her $150K nest egg and is living with her mother. What kind of 'exec' only has $150K in ONE stock at age 51? Hint: not a terrible effective one.
I wonder if there's a corollary between the intelligence of these employees and the fact that it's tits up?

I'm always amazed that people who post the "ignore the snobs" posts also talk about how much better they are than the other people. This is slashdot, a forum for geeks to discuss technology, not news for people new to comptuers, not news for windows users and not news for those thinking of trying the new OSS thing. There's a reason that Windows is represented by a broken window and Microsoft by the Borg. With any large gathering, there will be people who disapprove of the speakers. On the internet, on a site with millions of registered members, it's pretty much certain that at least a few people will HATE your post, whatever it's about. It's far lamer to complain about it.
How do you kill that which has no life?

I read your earlier post mentioning that you're an older gentleman getting a late start in computers. Welcome! Please ignore the rantings of immature children here on
Tiller's Rule: Never use a word in written form that you've only heard and never read. You will end up looking foolish.
Most of the crap you are catching is from younger more insecure people. Posting snarky shit helps them feel better about themselves. The Linux User Group I attend sometimes would NOT praise such behavior. They'd correct you and suggest things but they wouldn't be dicks about it.
Being a jerk and a being a Linux user are two different things. Someone can be one or the other or both. It would be better to just play with Linux and see if you like it or not for itself.
This is enough to make me buy a PS3 once the prices drop a little. It will be great for audio/video!
I have a 360 right now, but the requirement to have a Media Center PC to make it useful SUCKS! I got spoiled by XBMC and it's capabilities.
Sony knows which side of it's bread is buttered. People want to do more with their gaming consoles than just play games. They want to run unsigned code, play around, and understand the system better. Microsoft is doing itself a disservice by going out of it's way to prevent people from tinkering. They go overboard by requiring a "bundled package" in order for the 360 to act as a good media player. Suddenly people are buying new computers because Microsoft doesn't ship Windows Media Center as a standalone OS. Screw Microsoft.
So they have optimized an entire Linux distro to use the highly specialized SPEs in the Cell? Somehow I doubt it. You can't just fire up X standard threads and throw them at the Cell, since the SPEs cannot access main system memory. The PPE has to copy whatever data the SPEs need onto their local memory store, and then move it back when they're done with it. This basically throws everything we've been doing with multithreading on x86/PowerPC out the window. I'm guessing they may have fiddled with some of the video codecs and other places where it makes some sense, but on the whole I'm suspecting it's a more or less standard PPC distro... without graphics drivers.
Don't listen to the jerks making stupid comments about why you suck and telling you how you should have done x, y, z. Remember, these are the same people that cause the first "But will it run Linux?" comment to be modded +5 everytime new hardware is discussed. But, now that you've actually shown it running linux (Sony said it could before, but I doubt many, if any, people had seen evidence), they are treating you like crap. Everyone can criticize (and most do), but they're not rushing out to buy a PS3 and do it themselves, or offer any useful advice (with a few exceptions). Instead, they're laughing at "teh stupid sony fanboi linux noob" who said "compile" instead of "boot." I would say, try not to let them get to you, you can't make everyone happy (especially here), and for what it's worth, I think it was pretty cool that you spent the time and effort to get it to run, especially considering you are not an expert (I am a linux noob myself). As for the comments about your ebay auction, I know exactly where you are coming from. I thought a PS3 would be cool, but I figured I'd wait until the price came down (and MGS 4 came out) before I picked on up. But, after seeing the prices people were getting on ebay, I had serious doubts as to whether or not I had missed an incredible opportunity. The $4000-$5000 profit is a month and a half of my salary, and knowing that I could have earned that in a few days.. Well, you bet your ass my PS3 would be on ebay right now too. I figure, the way you thought (and the way I would have thought too) was, "Well, I want this PS3, and it is really cool, but I'd have to be stupid to pass up earning this $4000 for 1 honest day's work."
To reiterate, don't let some people here ruin slashdot for you, there are some very useful stories/discussions and I usually learn a thing or two reading them each day (at the very least, I laugh my ass off thanks to the various smart-aleck members and his/her comments (stupid me, this is slashdot, they're all "his" comments)).
Take a look at some of the discussions surrounding NewYorkCountryLawyer, especially this one. This guy is a lawyer who is fighting for something that 99% of slashdot readers agree with, and he takes time out of his busy schedule to talk to us, answer our questions, and keep us informed about the RIAA. And we treat him like crap. Reading those discussions, you'd think slashdot was "news for lawyers", because everyone and his brother thinks they know more than an ACTUAL lawyer. There are plenty of experts who post to slashdot, and even more non-experts who think they know better. Try not to let the vocal minority get to you, Linus Torvalds himself could post to slashdot and there would be "slashvertisment" tags to his story and users who claimed to understand the Linux kernal better than he. Don't let the things people here get to you (especially not in real life). I think what you did was pretty cool, and the important thing is that you thought it was cool. I too would have figured that the slashdot crowd would have appreciated what you did, it's a shame that some of the loudest voices didn't.
Take care, I hope you have a nice night.
Hey OP, looks like nobody took the bait!
Really? So when everyone I knew said "gooey" when we were doing OS/2 1.5 programming in 1989, it wasn't "the old days"?
The cake is a pie
Actually if we want to talk economics (which I am not an expert), I was wondering something. Essentially the PS3 is a computer that runs software. It's $600 (for simplicity) but the amount of software it can run is limited. People are eBay'ing theirs for very high prices and yet there are very few titles out for it.
So essentially this is a hammer that can hammer a few nails. So it should be cheaper because in a about a year it can hammer more nails, have more flexibility and thus should be more valuable. But this is probably moot because the supply is low and demand is high(the main price driver?)
Here are some Links showing more of Linux running on the PS3.

The Wii has been released yesterday, and already 620.000 units are sold worldwide... No news on Slashdot? Seems like Zonk has to get out of his PS3 bashing mode...
...yes, but does it run linu... oh. Nevermind.
I thought Tux was a kernel-based http server.
There's no place like 127.0.0.1
More like the stock market of 1929 or Comic books in the 90s.
When everybody and their Dog was standing in line for days to get the PS3 to put on EBay you had to know that this was going to happen.
It was all very predictable. There is a limit to the number of fools that will pay more then $600 for a PS3 instead of waiting a few weeks.
I am waiting for them to droop to less then retail.

;)
Unlike my PC which runs music and bedtime stories?
Don't forget LASER. I find it much more terrifying to tell captured secret agents that they are going to be executed by being fed to my tank full of sharks with frikkin Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation devices on their heads! ;)

A relatively new linux enthusiast comes along to show us what he was able to accomplish with the OS most of us love to use and all a lot of you can do is knock they guy down. Now if he had managed to install Windows on his PS3 and tell us about that I would fully expect him to get treated like this since we all "hate" Windows.
Linux will never get new users or gain popularity if the community using and supporting it starts acting like a buch of elitist jerks. This entire experience has probably soured klippoth from ever posting anything again and will probably result in him not even reading Slashdot any more. That's a shame. He is obviously an enthusiast who wanted to try something that had not been done yet. You all remember enthusiasm right? You know, it was that excited feeling you got when you first installed linux yourself, or built your first computer from a bunch of parts, or made your first DIY project. Remember that feeling? That's probably what klippoth was experiencing and he just wanted to share.
The OSS and Linux communities were built on sharing ideas and information. If the result of sharing such ideas and information is to get kicked around for your efforts then why would anyone want to share anything no matter how small of an idea? You should be supporting kipploth for his interest in linux and for being one of the first people (if not the first person) to get it to install on a PS3.
Is that the new euphamism for porn?

Dude, change your sig. Direct links to multimedia clips should always be accompanied, at the very least, with a warning, like "WMV media, 250 kB". Especially if the URL doesn't hint that it's going to be media. I leapt for the volume control once I saw WM was loading, fortunately it loads so slowly and performs so badly that I caught it before it had a chance to finish dicking around with itself :)
One simple rule for its versus it's
This is mostly interesting in that it shows that a non-explicitly-supported distribution runs on the PS3. This is good news as most other consoles/devices (including the PSP) are actively crippled to prevent this sort of thing. Perhaps they learned from the issues they had fighting the PSP homebrew scene.
The cake is a pie
As Ubuntu appears to have a PPC dist you should be able to install it directly.

Do What Now ???
The problem is that the supply issue will correct itself after christmass. Unfortunately your son has GOT TO HAVE IT and your promised it to him for christmass. Right now Target and Best Buy only sold 50 wii's and wont have anymore in until next year in my area. Its insane and creates a bubble for rich customers. If you have a few thousand dollars in your checking account if your rich enough so just buy it. Its just supply and demand and nothing is overinflated in the market. Sony purposedly made less of them to bring up the prices for christmass.

I'll tell you why it lags so badly. Dirty secret of PS3 Linux: 256MB of RAM. Even the cheapest Dell desktop has 512 these days.
I have seen the future, and it is inconvenient.
So, whether you think I'm a noob or an idiot or whatever doesn't matter at this point. The fact is, Sony expressly designed the PS3 to run Linux - any version, and they say so on thier site http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/index. html . We all know that Fedora is open source, and you can sell computers with Fedora installed without a problem. But my auction was cancelled without any notification from Ebay over "Unauthorized Copies (Copyright)". To quote:
Dear klipp0th,
You recently listed the following auction-style listing:

The listing was removed because it violated eBay policy. All fees related to this listing have been credited to your account. We also notified members who placed bids on the item that the listing has

What kind of crap is that!?! Since when is installing Linux on a system that supports Linux violating copyright? It wasn't a paid distro, it was a free one...
I think the "jargony" aspect of it is what bothers me the most. Plus it makes people sound like idiots, who use a word, but don't understand what it means.
... and then they built the supercollider.
Actually, there is debate over this interpretation. Some people believe acronyms to cover all initialism. Some only use them to refer to pronouncable initialism.
... and then they built the supercollider.
So, 1989 could be considered an early part of the "new era." By that stage, computers were well and truly out of the realm of scientists-only. Windows was out, and kids had been messing with Apple ][s and Commodore 64s for years.
... and then they built the supercollider.
Actually I heard that more Wiis are coming. The PS3 who knows.
Sorry but it is a really sad thing that a child will have their Christmas ruined by not getting a PS3 or a Wii. It is just a game and there will be more.
Sorry but I hope that my son will have better values than that.
If it is going to be such a total mess I wish Sony and Nintendo just put all of them on ebay. Donate every dollar over list to Toy for Tots. Or just give all of the consoles to Toys for Tots.
Let all the poorest kids get the coolest toys this year.
Too bad we live in an imperfect world.
Maybe I will just pick up an extra Salvation Army Angel this year as my protest to this great exhibit of mindless greed and selfishness.
See my blog http://ilovecookes.blogspot.com/ for light hearted technical information.
It doesn't run linux ;)
Well...where I was, Southern California, only n00bs said "Gee You I"...going back to the original Amiga, Mac and Atari ST.
The cake is a pie
(But this doesn't change the fact that you can't just use the SPEs as additional cpus.)
Right you are sir. I must've misread that part. :)
The term "noob," ironically, is something only "noobs" would say, in my opinion. Serious computer scientists were never that immature.
... and then they built the supercollider.
PSubuntu, maybe? Not too far fetched. I'm sure Ubuntu could be re-formatted to work with the PS3 and maybe even the PS2. It'd have to be running the XFCE desktop or something leaner than that.
