Afrotech done a PSX + PC hybrid a while back
And he used a capture card, so you'd get the PS1's output in same screen as the computer.

Done already!

Re:That is the coolest thing I've seen in years
Are they paying this guy royalties?

Re:Yes, and the Vimeo version is MUCH better quali
And of course, the source for some of the tech he used for the art school project, http://www.afrotechmods.com/cheap/hdspeakers/hdspeakers.htm Almost as old as the internet itself

Re:What a waste of energy
okay so. Let's try this again, I will not insult you this time however as I apologize for being a bit over the top.
This intel system, nor the system in the mouse I referenced, are not necessarily degaussing fields. It would depend on the wavelengths and charges used. Just because it transmits power doesn't imply degaussing.
The systems already in place will indeed charge any existing battery of any device that is capable of holding a charge. see http://www.afrotechmods.com/cheap/arnoldpad/arnoldpad.htm if you are wondering about this technology...(too lazy to find a non entertaining link to the same). Just do it to a non rechargable battery for too long and you'll blow it up. Do it to a rechargable battery for too long and you'll kill the life on a battery before blowing it up.
Not all things need to touch a battery to charge it, etc.

Re:What a waste of energy
see anonymous comment above with this link: http://www.afrotechmods.com/cheap/arnoldpad/arnoldpad.htm
of course, skip the ahhnold humor. At about 1/4 of an inch away from a pad (which can charge batteries OR enable a device which sits on the pad to be used without any batteries whatsoever - this is what the mouse I linked is), the efficiency is a lot better. Intel's extending the range.
It is a completely 100% universal adapter, and even works with things that are not rechargable and will give them some electrical charge (still diminshing).
The only thing is, it's not always safe as the stuff does tend to heat up.

Rock concert
With the low price of current new 1TB HDs, I think your project will cost more than buying new hardware (I may be wrong).
So I suggest building some enormous speaker arrays with the drives, as e.g. demonstrated in this video of Radiohead's Nude (the hard drive array kicks in around 1'40").
Building instructions.
Another demo. -
Re:Oh dear...
like this one?
It's DIY.. ;) -
Re:Dumbest video everI heard a story while I was working at a drive system design/assembly firm about a fellow who, back in the early days of digital drive systems, took a tape recorder, hooked its output up to an analog input on the drive, and used the signal of his voice on the tape to modulate the torque command to the motor, thus resulting in the motor vibrating out the sound of his voice. You mean like the HDSS?

Theah is sahmthing wrong with youah sense of humah circuit. Perhaps You need more powah!!!
-
Re:depends on how you measure improvements
It's not nitpicking. Floppy discs are close to "paper thin;" that's why they're called "floppy." Hard drive platters are solid metal, at least 1mm thick, and quite rigid. They're probably either the heaviest or second-heaviest part of the drive (the cast metal casing might be heavier). And as far as resonance goes, hard disks can actually be used as speakers.

that's nothing
The same guy also made slashdot out of paper and crayon

neat.
That's like the guy who made speakers out of some old hard drives.

HD window boring... HD speakers are cooler
I remember a while back there was a post about this guy who "explored" the sonic capabilities of some old, discarded HDs. They claimed the sound wasn't all that bad. Case windows are soooo yesterday anyway.

You can refill the cartridges for free

Refil your carts
Why not just refil your cartridges with deoderant? The cartridge isn't empty, it's just dried out.

Re:More Like: Inductive Coupling
This sounds like basically the same principle of inductive coils in the mouse pad and mouse that Afroman used in his wireless mouse charger. At the end of the article, he says the mouse works fine on the pad without using batteries. It's an interesting [and funny] read, as is everything else on the site.

Real DIY champ: afrotech
In terms of DIY, not many people can beat that guy
not many but this one, surely, can:
http://www.afrotechmods.com/,
the amazing things this guy does with a computer using only, off the shelf, under a dollar items.
see http://www.afrotechmods.com/reallycheap.htm for really great mods like the ghetto heatsinks or the paper cooled computer..... -

Re:Old News
That was an Afrotech Ghetto Hardware Mod. Sorry, couldn't find the
/. article on it. -
Bad Plan, but possible
Good luck. This is a really crappy way to do it, but...
You could set it up in an independantly vented sound-dampened box. Run two pieces of dryer hose out of the room and put some 50+ cfm fans on the ends. Build a case cover to seal the hoses onto - cardboard & blankets to go cheap, brown bread or something intended for the purpose is more expensive. You could try polyester batting, possibly.
Anyway, it's a crappy plan, reminiscent of even cheaper mods.
You need some kind of partition, box, etc. How much you are willing to spend is the big issue. -
This isn't the first...
The Afrotech Ghetto Hardware Fun site has early, failed experiments in peltier beverage cooling, with dangerous results! He almost had it right in his second experiment though...
