Re:Best DOS game...
I'm not sure about that...but KQ III did recently get a remake.
-
Re:Quest for Glory...
How the heck are those legal? (I looked through the FAQs and don't see this covered -- e.g. no mention of Sierra/the existing owner of copyrights/trademarks saying these are OK, preferably with proof.)
They claim to have permission from the copyright holder.
http://agdinteractive.com/global/legal.html
King's Quest, Quest for Glory, and all related material are copyrighted by Sierra Entertainment, Inc. and are used with permission.

I assume you mean QFG2? Yes, it was remade: http://www.agdinteractive.com/games/qfg2/homepage/homepage.html

AGS
Surprised nobody here has mentioned Adventure Game Studio yet. It's free, runs on Windows. Ports are available for linux and mac. Some pretty great games have been made with it, including the excellent Sierra classic remakes by AGD Interactive. If you want something more old school, there is also ScummVM. It's mainly used to run old games by enthusiasts, but it can probably be used to develop new games as well.

Re:King's Quest series
Thought you might want to know that the first three in the King's Quest series have been updated graphically with new vos/sound and are available online for free
Definitely agree that King's Quest V is a great starting point. Though I don't know how not-scary it would be
-
They are making something new: Mage's Initiation
Just imagine if all the talented people who spent hundreds or thousands of man-hours making this remake instead spent their energy on something new.
I haven't seen it mentioned in the comments yet, but AGD Interactive's commercial arm, Himalaya Studios, announced during the KQ3 release that they are working on something new: a role-playing adventure called Mages's Initiation. From the official announcement on their forum, their promo page, and a thread on the AGDI forum, it looks like in will leverage a lot of their knowledge in creating the Quest for Glory II remake to really bring that unique genre into the present day and future. I still haven't found a game that followed up on the promise of Quest for Glory II in my mind, so I'm personally looking forward to it quite a bit.
-
Re:The best one
ADG - The same people who did the KQ3 remake here have already done a Quest for Glory 2 remake. You can even import your character from the Sierra remake of 1 and export for the Sierra remake of 3.

Re:Cue the DMCA takedown in 5, 4, 3...
Game remakes by fans are fairly common, and few (that I know of) have recieved takedown notices.
http://www.agdinteractive.com/
http://www.tsl-game.com/ (This actually did recieve a takedown notice, two weeks before they were supposed to go live, but they worked things out with the copyright holders)

These are just a few Sierra game remakes.

Let's not forget some other unsung heroes.
You guys are going to love this.
http://www.agdinteractive.com/games/games.html
Not sure how these guys pulled it off (probably got permission before Vivendi ate Sierra), but they've been doing Sierra remakes for a long time.

Re:Sierra games anyone!! Quake2 with 3dfx voodoo
You might be interested to hear that there has been a VGA remake of QFG.
I don't think this series gets the accolades it should get. It was one of the earliest and best crossings of adventure and RPG gameplay. Games like KOTOR and Fable really owe a lot to it.

Fan-made games have worked out in the past FYI
The group at AGDInteractive has released remakes of King's Quest I, King's Quest II, and Quest for Glory II with the permission of the copyright holders. They pulled it off by approaching the company directly and working out a fan license. The release of those freeware games actually increased the sales for the titles in the same series, it was a boost for the fans and the copyright owners. Another fan-project, King's Quest IX got hit with a cease and desist since they hadn't done their legal homework, but they managed to work out a deal where they changed the name of the game to avoid confusion and could proceed with the permission of the parent company.
It is possible to get stuff like this to work out, and it's often in the best interests of all parties to foster a community that takes an interest in their work. Copyright-holders are also within their legal rights to shut-down fan-fiction being made about their works but it's seldom worth the bad press or harming the community that builds up around such things. But it's crazy to put years of effort into a project without exploring its legality and advertise it before completion so that it can get shut down. The worst part is the same thing already happened to another Chrono Trigger project, a 3d remake of the game called Chrono Trigger resurrection. The lawyers only swooped in when it looked like it had a chance of being completed, apparently like this title

QFG
The fact that there's no plans for Quest for Glory would be depressing if it wasn't for the recent release of this free QFG2 recreation.

Re:SCI
Oh I have played some of the AGS made games as well as others. Some AGS games that I liked in particular were the Trilby games (ie. 5 Days A Stranger, 7 Days a Skeptic, 6 Days A Sacrifice), Emily Enough, King's Quest Remake, King's Quest III Remake and Quest for Glory II Remake. One of my favourite free, non-AGS adventures games is Out of Order.
When it comes to adventure games, there probably aren't many that I wouldn't enjoy. Space Quest games, Leisure Suit Larry games, King's Quest games, Laura Bow games, Kyrandia games, Broken Sword games, Monkey Island games, Maniac Mansion games, TLJ games, Syberia games...you name it and I have probably completed it. Any new (to me) adventure is welcome whether it's commercial, free, professional or amateur.

Quest for Glory II
AGD Interactive just remade Sierra's classic Quest for Glory II: Trial by Fire.
It's VGA point-and-click instead of EGA parser, and it's got a number of things missing from the original (like the Saurus repair shop) and quite a few easter eggs.
The graphics are better, but only the level of "better" that Sierra themselves did when updating their own games to VGA in the early '90s. They maintained compatibility, so you can still import your character from QfG1, and still export to one of the later games in the series at the end.
-
Retro games
There's always going to be a market for retro games, but the definition of "retro" will change depending on the market.
8-bit games like MegaMan 9 will be big with the set who remember playing them back on the NES. As will parody games, like Strong Bad's Snake Boxer 5 and Alge-bros. (:
I never owned a NES (only console my parents ever sprung for was the Intellivision); I spent my halcyon youth playing Sierra games. So stuff like the VGA remake of Quest for Glory 2 by AGD Interactive are like gold to me.
As time goes on and gamers grow up, each generation of kids will hearken back to their favourite generation of game console.

Classic Quest for Glory is out
Recently a non-profit group, after 8 years in the making, finally released a remake of the old Sierra game Quest For Glory II - with a point-and-click interface. I was a big fan in the days, so in case anyone interested - http://agdinteractive.com/

Quest
I love Myst. I'll be the first to admit that... even got an armband tatt written in D'ni a couple of months ago.
But Myst sort of killed the adventure game genre. Everyone tried to copy Myst (see Sierra's "Shivers," fr'ex) and everyone failed.
Myst and Riven were fantastic. Myst III was pretty decent, but Myst IV was just a big pile of nonsensical puzzles-for-the-sake-of-puzzles. The puzzles weren't part of the story, but slapped on top because obviously Myst games need lots of puzzles.
Myst V and Myst Online: Uru Live got far better in that regard. I miss Uru, and can't wait for Cyan to start 'er back up again.
I also really miss Sierra's "quest" series. Was never that into King's Quest, but I loved Space Quest and definitely Quest for Glory. Best series ever.
There aren't a lot of adventure fans these days, at least not in terms of percentages of the gamer community. But there are still some of us around. Their VGA remake of QfG 2 is right around the corner.

Re:QFG4
There is no remake of QFG2... yet. I'll be replaying the entire series once that comes out.

Many already remade
Most of the games I would like to see have already been remade, like some of Square's old Final Fantasy games and Chrono Trigger.
Of course, what I would really like to see remade are some old Sierra games, such as Space Quest, Kings Quest, Quest for Glory.... Oh, wait....
http://www.agdinteractive.com/
Of course, this is updating many of the old 1980s Sierra games to the engine that was used in the early 90s Sierra games. I would love to see something such as Kings Quest 6 in a fully 3D enviornment. It seems as if the adventure game genera is all but dead, and what a wonderful enviornment to put an adventure game in, a truely 3D world. That does not mean there are not 3D adventure games, but games such as Elder Scrolls Oblivian seem to fall more on RPG than adventure game.
Strangely, Sierra actually tried a couple of adventure games in a fully 3D enviornment, but Kings Quest 8 and Leisure Suite Larry Magnum Cum Lade did not do as well as other games in the series.
Could you imagine Gabriel Knight in 3D? Roaming the streets of New Orleans in full stunning 3D. Wow! -
Re:Need to revive the whole Graphic
Remakes have already been done by fans... Some are really impressive.
http://www.agdinteractive.com/ (King Quest 1 and 2) -
Re:how about some RPGS
Personally, I am way, way too excited about the impending release of the remake of Quest for Glory II.
-
Re:More boobs! Re:Confusing subject
Thanks for the information...I really had no idea about the re-make or parody.
Looks like Tierra changed their name to AGD Interactive and the Quest for Glory 2 remake is a work in progress.
I'll probably download QfG 4.5 to see how good the spoof of part 1 is. -
Re:Confusing subject
AGD Interactive (formerly Tierra Games) is still working on their VGA remake of Quest for Glory II: Trial by Fire.
They've vaguely confirmed that it'll be done before summer next year. Or maybe it was before spring? -
Re:Adventure Genre
Too bad LucasArts axed it initially, along with the Full Throttle sequel.

Re:Screw ATI
I thought King's Quest 2 was only 4-colour CGA. Did Sierra make a redux? With an improved 70 word vocabulary?
By the way, you ARE familiar with the beautiful loving fan remake, right? http://www.agdinteractive.com/ -
AGDI
If you're into indie games, don't forget about AGD Interactive. Not only do they re-make classic Sierra adventures with tasty VGA graphics, but they have an original adventure game (called "Al Emmo") coming out that looks pretty awesome. Any old(ish)-school fans of Sierra adventure games should check them out.
I am not affiliated with this company in any way - I just think that what they're doing is nothing short of awesome, and want to spread the word. -
Re:Old games were pretty nice
Make sure you play the fan made VGA remakes w/ full talkie and digital music of KQ1 and KQ2:
http://www.agdinteractive.com/
They even got some of the original devs involved.
Anyway, KQ1 is an EXACT remake, KQ2 has added stuff, very very high quality stuff. I actually liked the KQ2 better.
And now they are working on QFG!! I cant wait! -
Re:Why - The quest for Glory!
check out http://www.agdinteractive.com/
Very exciting to me :)
Also there's a fan game called "Quest for glory 4.5" that is.. interesting (and fun) -
Re:Why - The quest for Glory!
Here, here! Amongst my favorite games of all times.. I think it might be time to play through them again soon in fact!
Though personally, I found 5 HUGELY disappointing ... I almost don't consider it part of the series, but I love the first 4.
Ooh, and if you haven't heard about it, you shoudl check out http://www.agdinteractive.com/. They're working on a VGA remake of QG2! Should be good.
Also, there's a fan-made game scrapped together out of pieces of various Sierra games called Quest for Glory 4.5. It's...interesting to say the least. I had fun playing it. -

Re:Nostalgia
Remakes of both KQ1 and KQ2 (plus music and voice packs for both games) can be downloaded from http://www.agdinteractive.com/ (the group that did the remakes.) No poking around on IRC required and for what ever reason, Vivendi seems to not care about this group's work as much as the KQ9 group's not even finished game.

QfG2 Remake
Sierra On-Line didn't do it themselves.
But Anonymous Game Developers (formerly known as Tierra), a group of highly motivated fans, are working to make one.
They already made 256 color remake of King's Quest I (Sierra did only remake the old AGI [160x200 16col] to SCI 16color. No 256 point'n'click color) and King's Quest II+ (with additional content, hence the +). Both game are available free for Download.
Note though, that these remakes don't use Sierra's old SCI engine, but with Adventure Game Studio engine. Therefor, you won't be able to play them on whatever hardware you want with FreeSCI, you only have a less versatile binary-only interpreter for Windows and Linux.
Sierra did also 256 color remakes of Larry 1, Space Quest 1 and Police Quest 1. -
Re:Well...maybe
There's a fanmade version in production using AGS. It's by the same people who remade the first King's Quest games.

Re:Random Thoughts:
Ok, only FYI (as many of these topics were covered in other replies) and certainly not for karma (as this topic is dead at this point), here is the definitive guide for playing Lucasarts/Sierra games on modern PC's:
First, Linux PC's:
Lucasarts games: http://www.scummvm.org/
AGI Sierra games (Lsl1, Sq1, Sq2, Kq1-3, etc): http://sarien.sourceforge.net/

Windows Sierra games (Sq6, Lsl7, etc): http://www.transgaming.com/ (or apt-get install wine)
Any platform, Sierra games: This guy has done the unpossible, writing timing fix patches for the games so you don't have to kludge them with slowdown utils: http://geocities.com/belzorash/

Good luck, let me know if you have any problems. -
Re:HrmmnIt also puts Sierra in the not so enviable position of selling a product directly to the customers...
Actually Sierra is in no position to sell to any customers.
Did Steam lead to the end of Sierra? No, but it probably didn't help.
Thank goodness for Tierra.
-
Re:Does it play games?
AGDI have remade Kings Quest One and Two in VGA modes with voice and music packs.
Awesome stuff!
Check it out at http://www.agdinteractive.com -
Fan-based King's Quest
Anonymous Game Developers Interactive (Formerly Tierra Entertainment) have 2 great adventure game remakes, Sierra On-Line's Kings Quest I and II, both done in KQ5-ish VGA graphics -- and KQII+ (as they call it) have some new stuff thrown in... very good games. They are also working on a remake of the 2nd Quest For Glory (a.k.a. Hero's Quest), in SVGA.
-
Re:LEC doesn't see that...
yep, and additionally you got Space Quest 7 and Quest for glory VI projects.
Tierra vga remake of KQ1 and KQ2 they are also making a remake of quest for glory 2
-
New (sort of) AGI/SCI/SCUMM gamesActually, there have been some amazing fan remakes of Kings Quest I&II, and best of all, Quest for Glory II. I've heard rumors of Space Quest remakes as well.
All are well-crafted and will bring back a memory or two. In addition, I've played a few new 'point and click' adventures made with the AGI/SCI engines; check the web, there should be a graphic adventure equivalent to the IF-Archive.

Older games
I'm still going back and playing my old games on occasion. Space Quest, King's Quest, Ultrabots, Quest for Glory...
Hell, AGD Interactive (formerly Tierra) is redoing some of Sierra's older EGA games into scintillating 256-colour graphical wonders.
Cell-shaded 3d graphics? Pretty to look at, but I don't need 'em. (: -
The Tierra Factor
Roughly half a million downloads for King's Quest 1 VGA and King's Quest 2+ VGA can't be wrong.
Above games were created by AGDInteractive, formerly Tierra Entertainment.
They're currently working on a VGA version of Quest for Glory 2.
