Re:and this will help disney?
How long do you think it would take Disney to setup a Pixar knock-off?
I don't think the question is setting up a Pixar knock off. If Disney wanted a fully 3d animation studio I'm sure Eisner could put it on his personal platinum card and have it bought this afternoon. So let's say they do that, what then? The problem is that Disney almost never produces any original ideas. Most of their work has been adaptation of existing stories. Outside of their distribution agreements with Ghibli and Pixar(oops), There aren't manny original stories that they can claim. Oh, and before you tell me that the Lion King or Disney's take on Atlantis were original, you had better check here and here.
-
Re:Save Disney site.
save disney? are you joking?
They re-tell stolen stories. They create little original work, for instance; nemo; atlantis) not to mention it robes timeless popular tales then defends them as disney's own creation. They use child labour to make garbage for hyper-consumers in the west (for instance, from a little googling: "A Haitian worker earns only 7 cents for every pair of Disney Pocahontas pajamas she sews, which sells at Wal-Mart for $11.97. These wages amount to one-half of one percent of the sale price of these pajamas.")
disney also plans on undermining poor sustanance fishermen in HongKong, dredging up toxic material in order to build a themepark.
Fuck Disney their immoral greedmongers -- They'll never get a single dime from me. -
Re:Ruroni Kenshin...
If you like Kenshin on CN, you owe it to yourself to buy the DVDs -- CN made some awful cuts to it, and most of the stuff that really makes you think has been mutilated. Just take a look at what happened to Soujirou's flashback. You might also have better luck searching for the song by its Japanese title, "Sobakasu."
It's also worth noting that no, not all Japanese anime makes you think. There is plenty of it that is mindless violence and sex. La Blue Girl and M. D. Geist are a couple of classic ones. Most of the worst stuff never sees this side of the ocean, however. Of course, I'm also of the opinion that despite its popularity, Lova Hina is one of the worst romantic comedies out there... -

Re:Adult Swim has not been editing some shows
I would hardly call the editing of Blue Gender "minimal"... The cutting room floor is practically a bloodbath. They've also taken huge chunks out of Rurouni Kenshin, although I think they really could've shown it virtually unedited on Adult Swim.
-
Release datesAlso, I would say that the US will not be seeing the movie until sometime in 2005. I personaly am looking forward to GITS:Stand Allow Complex, both the series and the manga.
Dreamworks announced a while ago that they would be giving GITS: Innocence a spring 2004 release (april, i think they said, but i don't have a link to that reference).
And what do you mean by Stand Alone Complex manga? Do you mean GITS2: Man-Machine Interface?

Re:The usual questions
Well it may be tagged as "Funny" but I can certainly answer these questions. I am the owner of the server that hosts Anime Digital.
The server is a Lotus Domino V6.01 running on a Windows 2000 server. The main anime.org.uk application is a Domino Database. We sub-host to a variety of UK organisations and clubs for free.
Joe has done some sterling work in getting this FAQ updated. Since I keep the logs I can tell that quite a few respectable companies have perused it.
Joe has twice attempted to slashdot my server now. And this time he tried it even further by posting on animeondvd and on Anime News Network.
I guess he's going to have to pay at the next London Anime Club meeting.

Re:Cases like this are rediculous
Well depending on your point of view, it really is nothing more than a case of being convicted for selling adult comics. According to Anime News Network, he was tried and convicted for "selling adult comic books to adults". The catch in all of this is that the reason he was charged in the first place was because his store was located near a school. I don't know about you, but as long as the adult material was not made available, and to the best of my knowledge this is the case, I have no problem with this. Is it just me?
-
It'll be consistent with the series in one way...
According to this article, the project will be on an "aggressive timetable." Does that mean the last 20 minutes will end up being taken from footage filmed with an old camcorder on a shaky tripod? It would at least be consistent with the last 2 Eva episodes...

Chobits
Manga writers have experimented with this exact concept.
'Chobits' by the CLAMP girls is about android computers in the shape of cute girls. The story is actually pretty relevant. It's primary theme is the positive and negative things that happen when people start interacting more and more with virtual worlds and peope and less with the real world and real people. -
Re:Good starting point?
I must disagree on a technical basis. Noir shouldn't correctly be called "action".
That word implies that people would move around from time to time, especially when faced with a dangerous situation like a gun battle.
Now that I think about it... maybe it shouldn't even be called "animation". Like Fushigi Yugi, it's more a slide-show with a soundtrack. -
Re:Should be more like 3000
3000 is quite a lot of theatres for any movie. Of the top five films from last weekend, only one is over 3000 theatres (although they were all pretty close). Check the figures. I've heard this 800 number thrown about, notably in the LA Times and the link provided in the story. I believe that Disney has simply stated that it will recieve a "wide theatrical release". Generally wide releases are considered 1000+ theatres, according to Anime News Network (not that they're really experts).
Also, I've been saying for weeks that Disney should be behind a Spirited Away win, because they have more to gain from it winning than Lilo & Stitch. L&S is already out on DVD, so I don't think SA going back to theatres is an overlapping concern. -
Re:huh?
It's a figure of speech. A few weeks back, Disney let on (bottom of third paragraph) that they were prepared to rerelease SA if it did well at the Oscars. It did. This is that rerelease.
-
Why you should see Spirited Away.......for the high-quality animation. Some anime series have interesting-looking characters, but backgrounds that look like they were created with a blob of paint smeared on a cel. All of the Miyazaki films I've seen feature exquisite artwork, from character design to sweeping panoramas to tiny detailing in action sequences that are barely noticed when you see them in Miyazaki's work, but are glaringly absent in anime without all the detail.
...for the chance to experience what it's like to look at the world through a child's eyes. A short plot outline isn't going to express the moments of sheer wonderment and exhilaration that this film inspires. After seeing this movie, I felt young .
...finally, to be able to realize the sad shape American animation and the big industries who market anime are in. Pixar is the lone exception- Disney, Toonami, and all the networks showing Saturday morning cartoons are so constricted by the notion that "Animation is for children" that they will NEVER be able to produce something as original as Spirited Away, or even have the nerve to show many beloved series in their original form. Thank the gods that the Japanese are willing to take chances, because I doubt American studios would have the backbone to produce films like Jin-roh, Spirited Away, or End of Evangelion.
Anyhow, kudos to the Academy members who voted for Spirited Away! The award was well-deserved.
-
Quite possibly, but...
It's also possible that if Spirited Away sees another theatrical release, Disney will delay the DVD release for however long the movie is in theatres, plus a few months. While I personally hope they release the DVD on schedule AND put it on screens out there. anime news network and nausicaa.net will probably have information from disney about this in the next few days.

mmm...i like webcomicsGenerally, I tend to start my day with Webcomics:
- Machall - best..webcomic...ever (updates: "tues, thurs, sat" but more like when he gets around to it)
- Penny Arcade - a very popular, and very funny gaming comic (M W F)
- Megatokyo - a well drawn comic with a strong story mangaish (M W F)
- Ctrl-Alt-Del - cut and paste, but always funny (Daily)
- Something Positive - kinda cut and paste, but often very funny (daily)
- Real Life - cut and paste, but still a pretty funny gaming comic (mostly daily)
- Calvin and Hobbes - rereleasing C+H online, 10 years delayed...my personal fav (daily)
- Errant Story - a well drawn, story based modernish fantasy comic (updates every other day or so)
- Angst Technology - a game software firm and their antics (updates almost daily)
Then (if there's still time before class, if not just after) I generally see whats up on- (as if you need the link)Slashdot
- CBC News Canadian news from the CBC
- Debian Planet good debian news
- Footnotes GNOME news
- Ars Technica another tech site, often has interesting projects too...
- Anime News Network exactly what the name implies.
- Unconventional Conformity a blog.
- The Weather Network - for my local weather
And well, thats about it. That I check frequently at least. I do like webcomics and strongly suggest that you check out Machall Megatokyo and Errant Story if you don't already though! And then there's also everything2 but its not news and I can't check it daily (or else I would do nothing all day but read!) its too good at just drawing you in. And the anime turnpike to go browsing through Anime fansites...

Re:Futurama Professor censored on Cartoon Network!
I was additionally surprised that they even went to the trouble of removing it from the closed captions. Often the closed captions are overlooked. For example, the TV 2 hr. timeslot version of Predator retains a caption of "SHIT!" (though apparently someone thought this alien being able to speak English and even the appearance of its face is deemed censorable--but equivalent scenes are intact in the edited-for-TV version of Predator 2, so maybe they fall into the cut-for-time rather than cut-for-content category).
Then again, when Tech TV showed Serial Experiments: Lain, the word "shit" was spoken several times in the dialog of one episode and once in the next (at least in the first airing of those two episodes my TiVo picked up), but in the captions (which they apparently perform live for their whole line-up of shows) it was omitted or, in the one instance episode I saw, replaced with "(beep)".
Anyway, back to the off-topic, there was a slashdot story about Cartoon Network editing. To this point, their Standards & Practices forbid endorsing or degrading any religion in their programming, even in their Adult Swim block. All religious references and even iconography get removed (see question 9 of the interview).
Adult Swim is edited for a TV-14 rating, not TV-M. Perhaps it should be called Teen Swim? -
THIS JUST IN: Possible Release Dates!
Here's the article from Anime News Network, just posted about half an hour ago, with more concrete news on the Kiki and Castle in the Sky DVDs. As you can see, there's nothing said about a Spirited Away DVD release, though

Re:Region 1?
Actually Japanese TVs use a lower black level (0 IRE as opposed to North America's 7.5 IRE, which isn't nearly so much of a problem), and the only color shifted Japanese R2 dvd was Spirited Away, which has a noticeably red tint on every set in Japan. There's actually a lawsuit regarding that very issue brought about by a few Japanese people (see this article at animenewsnetwork).
-
Re:Yeah, Sure...
Actually TechTV Canada is currently fighting to get the rights to these anime series, if you would like to help check out this ANN article.

Re:I still want a dedicated anime channel, though
That was flamebait, you know very well that porn/hentai is just a tiny fraction of anime. (The majority of it is toy commercials for 7
-year olds!)
But I must reply to tell you that "something recently in the news" was that animations of children engaged in sex is legal, even though the Republican Congress is trying to change that. -
Re:What I wonder is...From an interview with one of the plaintiffs:
- You seek 10,000 yen per plaintiff. What is the basis of this amount?
I believe that we should not demand too much compensation because it is not as if we were harmed in any way. Our purpose is not financial, but rather to scrutinize the distributor's attitude as a corporation towards its clients. I think that this would not have become such a problem if Buena Vista had admitted its mistake when people complained in the first place; there would never have been any lawsuit if they had. I think that it is Buena Vista's attidude and response to the issue that are the problem

Re:Cartoon Network Anime
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/columns/edit-list
. php.
A nearly complete list of every single change Cartoon Network has ever made to an anime.
And you thought YOU had too much time on your hands :P -
Re:not too pissed off.
First of all, CN modifies many anime horribly for content. Entire storylines are sometimes cut out of longer series.
I've only been watching Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star, but from what I've read, the edits haven't been too bad. Mostly substituting swears and lessening the amount of blood. Yes, I'd rather there weren't any, but I am far more happy at CN for making the effort and exposing me to some great stuff.
Anime has already gone fairly main stream. It's doubtful whether Adult Swim brings in very many new viewers, so I'm not too upset over them, either.
Er, really? Aside from some fluffy kids' fare a la Pokemon, Card Captors and the like, where are you seeing anime besides Cartoon Network? A few rare stateside movie releases (which I have only seen showing at independant and art-house type theatres) doesn't make it mainstream.
If I am overlooking some other mainstream venue for sophisticated contemperary anime, please clue me in; I've love to know about it. -
For an early review of the English dub...
Anime News Network claims to have seen a 35mm. Read about it here.
The short version: Absolutely nothing was cut from the movie. Not the smokes, not the booze, nothin'. However, a few lines have been added to help fill in certain blanks. He also claims that the dubbing was better than on Mononoke. -
Re:mega-edited?
Kyle Pope's edit list at http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/columns/edit-list
. php is a comprehensive list of edits for both Adult Swim and Toonami, for Cowboy Bebop and many of the other shows that appear on Cartoon Network. Considering it's a cartoon channel, it's been pretty reasonable about what it changes. Although a lot of the edits are just silly, they don't really affect the storyline. -
Read up on what you intend to bashHmm... how to deal, how to deal.
Got to love that broad brush you paint alot of people with. Sort of the same brush folks use to paint people with above-average computer skills as "nerds" and "geeks" -- you know, lower than them because of being "less normal". Whatever the fuck that means -- I've never met a normal person -- but I digress.
I take the view that the original article was nothing more than food for the bean counters. Anime fandom is a bit like most other geek-leaning fandoms: tons of anal-retentives who ignore normal things (taking baths, socializing, etc); all for the joys of super-analyzing their particular hobby down to the sub-atomic particles. What do you want? The original article is on a column about edits to anime. Of course it's going to be spacious and go into detail that's not important to the normal viewer.
But I do find it rather funny that Yet Another Idiot is pushing the "anime is kiddie p0rn" angle. From your chest-puffing boast regarding having written a "manual" that says anime cons are big circlejerks to your quickness in pointing out the obvious content of the questions that relate to sex or sexuality; I'd say you're the one with the "sex" problem here. I suppose you could just be a sexually-frustrated middle-aged pot-bellied fella who wants to feel bigger by shooting at a rather harmless fandom (and one that doesn't really roll through Slashdot in any significant numbers).
If the only significant thing you have to say is "anime is kiddie p0rn", then why the hell are you responding to this? Somehow, in some small way, you hope to find fans who will rally around your silly and unimportant assertions? Rah rah for you. If you even knew what the hell Toonami was, you might actually be capable of contributing a worthwhile response; but alas, you're simply a windbag like many a "superior" nut I've run across. Perhaps you lazily typed in a worthless source of info in your quest for truth, and decided this was anime as far as you could find it with the search tools at your disposal. Did you even bother to Google your way to a passing understanding?
Read. Watch. Learn.
Do these things BEFORE you open your mouth (or pound your keyboard); you might actually (gasp) change your view of things! -
Re:Animated Feature Film?
An film submitted for consideration as Best Animated Film *must* also be submitted for Best Film.
The category will be included any year that there are at least 8 (I think) qualifying films.
I'm just pissed that Jin-Roh was not considered as it had its world-wide relase one month too early in France. It met all the other requirements.
-
Re:Am I missing something?
They play a heavily edited and dubbed Cowboy Bebop. It just isn't the same.
While you are correct that what is aired is edited and dubbed in English, your statement is misleading.
Ask most anime fans to list their favorite English dubs, and I guarantee that Cowboy Bebop will show up several times. Many have said that it's better than the Japanese version. I don't agree with that, but I can see why it's believed to be.
I can not recall CN ever allowing one of their programs to display cigarette smoking, gunfire with actual bloody results, a level of swearing beyond "golly-gee!," repeated and quite visible drug references, etc. While there were edits and completely cut episodes, what was left on the air represents a monumental step in the right direction for adult-oriented animation on television. And to top it all off, they are airing the cut episodes during the re-runs to make up for the knee-jerk reaction to the content the cut episodes had in the light of 9/11. -
Re:Yeah, they ripped off stuff but...
Well, the writers of the movie indicated that they'd never seen Nadia, but they did homage some elements from Miyazaki. I see no reason not to take them at their word. I mean, you have to admit that Nadia has been a fairly obscure series, as anime goes, up to now. It had a crappy Streamline dub that's long been out of print, then in the last year or so a limited edition VHS sub, and the DVDs are only starting to come out now. I've been an anime fan since 1991, and I've never seen Nadia--nor have I had a chance to. Why should they have?

The interview seems to be an AIC exclusive. And on a totally unrelated note, why hasn't anyone introduced Taco to Key the Metal Idol? I'm wondering why this little gem has never goten the publicity it deserves. How good is it? I would say it's the best android/robot-related work since Bladerunner, and certainly the best android-related anime. And yes, I am including Ghost in the Shell and Bubblegum Crisis in that comparison.
It has some elements of fantasy, (What are Key's mysterious powers and how are they related to the feelings of those around her?) and of sci-fi,(what are the Sipes,(short answer: military-grade humanoid robots),and what is their nature? and what is Ajo Heavy Industries doing with them on the streets of Tokyo?) blended together to form a great series with mysteries abounding.(what is the relationship between Key and these sipes?)
The pacing is excellent, the storytelling incredible, and it looks like it won't disappoint with its last episodes, unlike Evangelion. I've watched up to Episode 14 so far, (13 30 min eps, 14 & 15 are 90 min each), and as soon as I'm done here I'll go watch the last one. Sigh. Will this piece of anime ever get the attention it deserves? Listen, just watch the opening sequence, nothing more. If the haunting style and brief glimpses of story elements don't draw you in, then you can leave without ever watching any of it again, and I won't ever bother you again, Ok?

SummaryFor anyone who doesn't want to read the entire interview, here's a summary from Anime News Network with a little more information:
3rd Tenchi Muyo OVA Series officially Announced
According to an interview posted on the AIC website tonight, Kajishima Masaki, creator of the Tenchi Universe, will be directing the 3rd OVA series.
The new OVA series is to be the sequel of the original "Tench Muyo! Ryohki" OVA. In the new OVA series Kajishima will set out to answer the questions that were left unanswered in the previous series. The story will feature very prominently the the "Choushin" goddesses and also feature a new, currently unamed, character who will be show up in the 13th episode as Tenchi's potential rival.
The first chapter will feature Tenchi, Washu, Tsunami and Tokimi as main characters. Aeka, Ryoko and the others will not have any part in the main story, however they will be present on the sidelines and at the end of the series.
The new character, whom Kajishima temporarily calls 'Z' will be a minion of the Choushin godess Tokimi and is a part of her goal of forwarding the Choushin's original plans.
And, of most interest to Tenchi fans around the world, the announcement they have been waiting for, "Tenchi is forced to make up his mind and chose one among girls." This decision, which will occur near the end of the 1st chapter will be a major turning point in the series and signal the end of chapter 1.
Kajishima's exact plans for the series beyond Chapter 1 remain unclear and he does not seem entirely certain exaclty how many chapters there will be.
It also isn't clear how many episodes will be in chapter 1, but since a major protagonist will be introduced in episode 13, at least 15 episodes can be expected at the very minimum.
I just hope they go back to the original Character designs rather than the travesty that was Tenchi In Tokyo/Shin Tenchi Muyo... Jesus, that was awful all around. The OAV series, however, was excellent. And Tenchi Universe was resoundingly mediocre... at least they're going to build off of the first and best plotline instead of building yet another continuity.... that's the thing that's most infuriating about Tenchi Muyo.. four series, and three different continuities..... more if you count the various one offs, like Pretty Sammy and Mihoshi's Special.
