Re:No Games For Me!!
Uh uh. Computers were for work. Spreadsheets, databases, programming.
So you played Flight Sim, Magic 8 Ball, and Pinball, eh?
Yeah, I'm in electronics, so I used to play a lot of Tetris and Bugs. -
Have Fun With It
Think of it as having some hidden Easter Eggs or a game.
Perhaps It'll come back with something interesting if you listen to things like Joe Wecker - DeCSS Song or Wierd Al Yakovic - Windows 95 Sucks
Could anyone else care about what you listen to?
If your collection is really Da BOMB, it'll include
JJ Walker - DYNOMITE!
Simon and Garfunkle BRIDGE Over Troubled Water
Moody Blues - TUESDAY AFTERNOON
The Vogues - FIVE O'CLOCK World -
Re:What fun
Loom, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle... That liberated the player to walk up to dangerous pirates and insult them to their faces and know that however embarrassing the consequences, it would never be fatal to the game.
That isn't completly true, you could die in Secrets of Monkey Island(tm).
Here is a howto from eeggs.com and a screenshot from http://mywebpages.comcast.net/paulsuth/somipage.ht ml -
Re:Like Wizard + Dark Side of the MoonI've heard about this myself. A woman I used to date said it is absolutely true. I wonder if using the CD instead of an album would screw up the timing. I just looked up a page that describes the synchronicity in detail including when to start the album.
Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd) - Wizard of Oz Synchronization

Re:Sim city Home Edition.
Don't worry, I'm sure Superman will save us! Or not.

Re:But the best. . .
You mean like Excel 95?
-
But the best. . .
Perhaps the best gaming easter eggs aren't in games at all. The Excel flight simulator is an old favorite of mine.

Best. Easteregg. Evar.I remember this one (and the how-to is still on the net!):
1. Hold Left-Shift, Left-Alt, Right-Shift and right-alt
2. Press any of the F keys and get a message!
3. To get a rude message toward Commodore, do this
4. Hold down the same as step 1 and hold down an f key
5. Insert a disk and you get the message " We made the amiga... "
6. Take the disk out and you get " And Commodore Fucked it up! "
(This was from the site above -but I remember doing this on 1.2, with an original 1000). -
Re:Stable Phone!
I have experienced some crashed with my nokia phones (do not blame me, I got them for free). Bugs in firmwares and stuff are also to blame, like this cute little Sony Ericsson bug: here

Re:Thoughts on virtual thoughts
I thought of this first, but he doesn't speak in an Austrian accent, at least not in episodes I've seen.
-
Re:Thoughts on virtual thoughts" As every nerd should know, a 6502 processor is entirely sufficient for travelling in time..."
for those of you who didn't get that joke.

Re:Pac Cel!
Or you could play Doom inside Excel 95, without any special download whatsoever. Er almost.

Re: 3 grooves
There was a Monty Python Album with 3 groves.

Easter eggs?
Isn't the point of an Easter eggs that it is hidden?!?!
Some thing that is put in by one of the programmers as a joke
Like the "I wish Bill Gates was dead" easteregg in Word'97 Or Doom 3 - PDA Spam Egg http://www.eeggs.com/items/43260.html/ Or URL:http://faqs.ign.com/articles/544/544857p1.html /.
Or the WinXP Windows XP -shut down unexpectantly http://www.eeggs.com/items/37518.html/
Dam blood kids growing up on Win2K and XP., want everything now and it be all graphical. Never saw a command line in there live, or if so only in games is enter the GOD or ammo cheats......

Clicky and learn, friend.
Random text to avoid lameness filter. Rob Malda is a sexy man. I wish he didn't marry Kathleen Fent so I could offer my manslot to him upon every waking moment. -
Nice little claim to fame
So Deepz0ne has his name 9 times on every machine running XP. 72 bytes per machine, he must be taking up a several gigabytes across the globe, very impressive. I don't think there are many names buried in Windows now since Microsoft banned easter eggs. Bar Wes Cherry who appears to have his name in every release with Solitaire.

Remember the Easter Egg.The Palm easter egg should be easy enough to display in a portable manner, and there should be some number of panel members who will have their own palm that they can test it on.
Then point out that, instead of running an Easter Egg and Taxi across your screen, if you were dealing with a E-ballot box, it could have brought up a screen allowing you to modify the vote count.
This cannot be tested for after delivery because, no matter what testing regime you come up with and execute, I can come up with an easter egg that will be missed by that regime. (This actually fits the mathematical definition of 'infinite').
Question:
Should we be willing to bet our democracy on the hope that nobody would pay to do what is provably possible? More importantly: should we place our nation, states and municipalities at the mercy of the people who would be willing to engage in such a usurpation of democracy? -
Tyrant Shatner?
I know they're going with Kirk but wouldn't it be funny if he played the tyrant from Sea Quest DSV, instead of Kirk? Anyone who saw this episode will know what I mean... he was terrible in it with a fake accent and all the Shatner pomp and circumstance.
But seriously, I would much rather see Spock again. -
Re:Combining ProductsNow that all products are being rolled into one, I'd like to suggest that any product with a screen and four input buttons be required to have Tetris on it.
-
Re:Why would you say that?!What's wrong with those lasers, and unobtainium? Besides, the flying trout makes it all ok.
While speaking of movies and underwater drilling - The Abyss, anyone?

DVD Audio back-compatibility
Imagine how much DVD-Audio and SACD cost, especially as they have to accommodate existing players and feature backwards compatibility.
Accommodating existing players? Most DVD Audio titles I've looked at include a backward compatibility track for use with DVD Video players.
Oh, you meant backwards compatibility. You mean like the alleged "Satan move through our voices" in the song "Snowblind" by Styx?

Messin' with people
Instead of a ring, you could play this messed up thing that Weird Al put at the end of Off the Deep End...

Re:Makes you wonder
The best easter egg in a car I think is this one. Have not found the hidden launch control on my 10 year old rustbucket, though. I am taking apart the digital clock this weekend to find it.

Re:ADF Scanners
I definitely second this recommendation. IMO, one of the best scanners ever made. I have a newer usb HP scanner that doesn't even come close to the speed of this thing. They just don't make bulky, well built quality scanners like the 4C anymore.
And for the record, you aren't limited to only 4 software applications for scanning (at least in Windows, any application will work if it uses TWAIN). Perhaps you were referring to the document feeder having limited software compatibility?
(Off topic, but amusing nonetheless if you didn't know, there's an easter egg that's quite humorous..) -
Re:HP Printer Easter EggAs someone mentioned in another comment, many of HP's scanners can play "Ode to Joy" if you perform a certain set of actions..
you do it like this and it works on a lot of HP's older scanners..

vim
I'm just waiting/hoping for the day when Microsoft creates a PDF on a Mac that does a MS Office vs. ViM comparison.
Then those stupid emacs lovers will finally have to shove it. Of course, ViM doesn't have a version of Tetris for ViM (like emacs) or a fucking flight sim nested in it (Like Excel).
Come to think of it, Open Office doesn't have a flight sim nested in it either. Shouldn't this be in the PDF? This some serious ROI here... -
Tetris on the HP 54600B Oscilloscope
This has already been mentioned below, but I dug up the link and I think it deserves its own thread: LINK
One of the labs at my University has the infamous Tetris oscilloscopes. Hoo mamma, when I discovered that little "feature" I was one happy camper.

Re:Well...
You must be forgetting the fast-paced, finely tuned, ultra-realistic bloatware that is Microsoft Word 97. Yeah, that's right, a pinball game somehow slipped into the release of Word 97... oops.

Use a Copyright Trap> How do you distinguish a list from a copy? And would not the burden of proof be on the accuser? Don't they need to provide some mechanism for making the case that it was 'their' data that was 'stolen'?
You would presumably place a copyright trap in your database.
Map makers, form companies, and the like are known to insert intentional errors in their maps in order to prevent somebody who has copied their information from claiming that the information was gathered independently.

Re:Oh My God ...Isn't it against the law to have 'undocumented features' in software used by the government?
AFAIK, Microsoft is one of the leading makers of 'undocumented features' in the industry.
Pun intended.
-
Yes.

Weren't those easter eggs a kind of prank?
Weren't those software easter eggs pranks too ? If you end up keying in some combinations of keystrokes, you might see totally unexpected funny/interesiting stuff on your screen.
Did you miss out on this post and all the replies?

Re:I am going to get slammed, BUT...
i hear this argument a lot, the whole, "why should i give out my code for free?" thing. doesn't anybody do anything for the love of doing it rather than the love of money anymore?
take for example the model of the USS Enterprise in the smithsonian (unfortunately the only link i can find relating to it is here) . from what i remember, that guy spent 6 long years making this huge, minutely detailed replica of the USS Enterprise, and donated it to the smithsonian. donated!
it received national attention and is probably visited by several hundred people every day. as an engineer, i can respect that: bored engineers need to work their hands and minds, and man, if people can marvel in our creations at the end, that's fucking awesome.
i doubt that guy gets any money for what he made. i doubt he really wants any. it's a beautiful replica that isn't otherwise languishing in a shrink-wrapped box gathering dust in some closet.. it's not a project that was scrapped halfway through because of some manager's whims or economic constraints. it's the product of a lot of love, attention, and imagination. -
Re:NCC: What does it stand for? Absolutely nothing

DVD-Audio
i saw this link on fark recently. as was so perfectly stated at that time, i can't believe anyone decided that DVDA (DVD-Audio) would be a good acronym for... well for anything at all. sorry, that acronym is tained for all time.

Re:Get the word out!Actually, DON'T go there and post your eggs. Hopefully others will NOT follow. Let me explain...
I think this site is the most inaccurate, stupid, and mismanaged conglomerations of crap out there. Sure, there are a lot of cool and verifiable eggs on site that you will not find anywhere else, but if you actually take a minute to sit down and look closely at the content, you will see that it is often inaccurate and incomplete.
The site maintainers need to set up a system that is more rigid and structured for defining what an egg is and in what manner it gets posted. If you look at most eggs, they are lacking in many important details, such as:
What the egg is.
Exactly how to reproduce the egg.
What hardware/software versions does it work on?
Many of the eggs on the site are simply not eggs. Read the comments in the following egg to see how many people show the egg to be false, but yet the non-egg continue to stay posted:
http://www.eeggs.com/items/16200.html
The webmaster even admits it for this one:
http://www.eeggs.com/items/22634.html
Here is the same exact egg, listed twice (also try reading the comments for some highly intellectual discussion):
http://www.eeggs.com/tree/1243.html
I think the site sucks, because it doing a less than half-ass job. It's not worth doing if you're not going to at least _try_ to do it right. -
