I read a lot of magazines and newspapers online. When I'm in the US I buy most of them in paper form (including the NYT every day) but I'm in Europe most of the time and the online versions are the only reasonably fresh way to get the content I want.

I actually have paid for an online subscription to the New York Review of Books but it was a bit pricey.

What I would like to see is one place where I could pay a single price and select several online content sites to subscribe to. Even if each one has a separate price, I still want one place to handle the subscriptions. I think the hassle barrier is higher than any (reasonable) price barrier. I should have one account that gives me access to several journals.

I would happily pay US$50/year for combined unlimited access to the NYT, the NYRB, the New Yorker, and Artnet Magazine. (Most of that content is currently free.) But I'm not going to bother with four separate subscriptions.

And I really don't think a micropayment or other per-article payment scheme will ever work. The fact that Fark makes money should be a pretty strong hint (and they're not even selling content per se, just better access to their site).

Slightly off-topic aside: if we all use Firefox now, why the continuous grumbling about the NYT Free Reg Req? Whenever the cookie expires on my completely non-personal account, the Fox just logs me back in.

There's a lot more to news than its "surprise" value. Talking about these stories is part of what makes the nerd community strong. You want pure infotainment, go to Fark. The rest of us can carry on with the community activities that protect the rights of even the infoporn surfers who can't even complain for themselves.

Solar Super-Sail Could Reach Mars in a Month Mars

The only reason it made anyone's attention today is that it was posted on FARK this afternoon. The Slashdot submission came after that. The third poster on FARK noticed that the web site hasn't even been updated since 2000; "Klar" (who submitted it here) apparently didn't even read that far.

Interestingly enough, the FARK guys linked my Hoax page which includes a pointer to the WSJ article and those FARK guys wrote some HILARIOUS comments - so I wonder how many comments above were biased by the original press report?

And you better believe I turned on the "Airplane Invasion" option (along with a few other "tricks") and while I turned it off for the night, expect it back on in the morning.

BTW, I thought the /. crowd would have more of a sense of humor - the FARK guys are hilareous! ;-)

I suspect there are a number of individuals on /. that also read Fark. There seems to be a fair amount of overlap between the two sites, as anything remotely geeky ends up on both pages in short order.

So just how MANY shares of ZAP! stock should I buy to get to the top of the waiting list to get a SMART ForTwo?

ZAP! exists not to sell cars, but to pump up their stock price.
These cars are imported by a Registered Importer and converted to US Standards for resale to US Citizens. Overseeing the import and conversion is a company named "Smart-Automobiles LLC" which has NO CONNECTION to Mercedes Benz / DaimlerChrysler.
They have to buy these things RETAIL in Europe, bring them over to the US, convert them, then ZAP! sells "dealerships" and "franchises" across the country and then the "dealer" takes his cut. No wonder the price is so high.

ZAP! exists merely to sell franchises and dealerships for a brand they do not own the rights to.

You cannot buy a Smart ForTwo from ZAP!, you can only buy a dealership.
Despite their advertising claims, ZAP! does NO CONVERSIONS, they are nothing but a bunch of marketing droids in an office trying to get people to think they are a "real" company that actually produces some sort of product.

Here is a conversation on FARK where a few people (including a former employee apparently) pull back the curtain on ZAP!
