Porn
As Leo Laporte pointed out, Sony already has decided to lose the war. It won't produce Bluray porn discs, so the biggest video sellers will be using HD.

Re:Translation:
Not true at all. Any store that sells MP3s can sell to people that own iPods.
If you hate DRM, you should also hate this law, because if other companies can only access iPod owners by selling DRMless music, they may. -

Re:So...
Actually, you make a good point...
I wonder how hackable this thing is? I mean, I've heard of people running Knoppix on an iPod, so why not? Anyone hear anything yet? I guess this is a start, but it'd be interesting to see if you could put a different OS on there or something, lose the DRM, and "squirt" music like a super-soaker in July. That almost makes this piece of crap worthwhile.
Oh yeah, I don't actually think the screen is bigger...I read that it's just turned sideways, so I guess perhaps one could argue it is laid out better. Yeah, I know...whatever, right? -

Re:Why no "trickle" solar?
I'm a little down on the 'hydrogen economy' for all the obvious reasons that have been presented here, and in the past. However, if Ford is actually serious about hydrogen over electric, my opinion is that there best bet would be a package where car and solar hydrogen generator sold as a together from the dealership. This would be much like the tiny toy hydrogen car that a Chinese company sold
http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/gadgets/hracer-toy- hydrogen-car-174962.php
hopefully, you don't need to travel more than the 25 miles between time you can charge your car from the grid more than once or twice a week. Meanwhile, your little solar station can sit there, perfectly aligned with the sun for max efficiency, generating hydrogen all week long, might take a few days to generate a tankfull, but hopefully you don't need to make the long trips more than once or twice a week. This should help with the 'no infrastructure problem' as well as a potential source for all those other fuel cell powered gizmos http://www.cnet.com/4831-11405_1-6412811.html that are just itching to get onto the market.

Re:I wonder how small they can get these...
OLED will be IMO more feasible for use in laptops before SED. OLED is already being used in small devices like mp3 players, car stereos, cameras, and stuff like that, while SED is not. Sony has a 27" 1080p TV on demonstration in Vegas, as well as many smaller models.
As you can see, they're already very thin (the one on the second pic is about as thin as the LCD on my laptop) and from my understanding of how the technology works, individual pixels will be powered proportionally to the brightness needed, so black pixels won't be drawing anything at all. -

Re:Wireless, More Space Than Nomad...
"See how stupid that sounds?"
Yes, I do. I also see how stupid the analogy is. The iPhone is extremely similar to other devices that have come before it. There is little, in fact, that it can claim that is unique.
"...while there are phones that are kind of like it, there are no phones that are really like it."
Sure there are. List the features that makes the iPhone truly unique in your opinion and explain how they define a new product category. Can't do it.
"Thanks for the specious argument though. They're always the easiest to rebut."
If it was so easy, one would think you would have done it.
"It IS a miniature Mac in your pocket."
That is a lie straight from Job's mouth. There is no Mac GUI. They've simply stuck the same name on an entirely different product. If it were a Mac in your pocket then it would run Mac apps. It does not. It's not even extensible since there's no 3rd party app support. It's an appliance, not a "computer".
"It runs OSX and you have no fucking idea if it supports 3rd party apps or not since that hasn't actually been announced."
Clearly you aren't reading, or don't want to read, news that shatters your iPhone world. Feast your eyes: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/macworld2007/gizmodo-ip hone-hands-on-part-deux-why-isnt-it-white-and-othe r-questions-227575.php
No, it isn't really OS X and no, it doesn't support 3rd party development. Straight from Apple.
"It would, of course, be absolutely retarded to not support 3rd party apps."
I'm glad you said that and I wholeheartedly agree. It's retarded and it's true.
"In fact there's a chance that this system is even based on an Intel Core processor, though I'd guess it's more likely to be a single-core than a dual."
I doubt it. It's likely an XScale processor since those are what Intel offers specifically for ultra-low power. If it's Core then it's battery life won't compete.
"But your statement above says that criticisms of the device are valid, and some of them are just asinine."
Saying that criticisms are valid is not the same as saying that ALL criticisms are valid. Which ones are asinine? Regardless, valid criticism is not FUD. -
Re:FUD-busting timeOn the 3rd party app subject, it isn't looking good. I'm sure that games will be made for it -- it would be strange that Apple would release games for POI (plain old Ipod), but not for this. However, according to Gimodo, it won't be open for everyone.
Why make such a big deal out of it being OS X underneath? Maybe the info from Gizmodo is wrong, and they will release an XCode module to create apps, or maybe they want to charge a license to develop for the platform much like how many other companies operate.
It seems strange to me, as Apple has to some extent embraced the open-source community. But the problem they continually have is deciding whether they are more on the soft or hard side of the Wares. If they are simply trying to sell the hardware known as the iPhone, then they better open it up for everyone to write software for. People have claimed this is unnecessary because they never did for the IPod, but this is clearly not just an IPod.
On the other hand, if they aren't make much profit on the HW (which wouldn't completely surprise me
.. most cellphones are sold at a loss), then they want to get a revenue stream from somewhere. I'd be curious if anyone knew how this might break down. There is also always the possibility that if it's closed that someone figures out how to hack it. I'm guessing if they are trying to keep it closed, they would make all binaries to be signed -- since you have internet access, it seems trivial to get the apps onto the device.
As a final thought, I don't think it's likely that Apple will release a version with a larger HD anytime soon. I'm guessing Jobs would insist on it being as slim as possible, which would rule out a real HD. What I think will be interesting is what the next IPod will be. It's hard to imagine that it won't be widescreened. But then there is the question, will it have WIFI? If it has WIFI, then it competes in some way with the iPhone. On the other hand, if they don't put WIFI in there, then can the POI compete with the Zune (I assume it will eventually get better)?

Vision of the wireless iPod?
For all the secrecy, the iPhone looks a lot like some pictures on Gizmodo http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/portable-media/possibl
e -ipod-touchscreen-picture-156619.php from early 2006. They thought it was an iPod though. I think a lot of the cover was helped by the fact that nothing on the final device makes it look like a phone.
Now I can't help but wonder if this may be a preview of a near-future video iPod. Think about it: if you strip out the phone functionality (and thus hopefully much of the expense) from the iPhone, you'd have an video+music player+basic PDA that supports 802.11 synch AND has enough horsepower to buy from iTunes directly from the player. -

Re:not enough ooompf... 0.5W guaranteed max
According to the USB spec this is true. However, I have yet to see a USB host that does the power per the spec. That is, a programmable current limiter and overcurrent detector for every port. These are costly, and most USB host devices are cost sensitive (PC mobos, consoles, set top boxes). Most often the best you can hope for is a self-resetting fuse for every socket module (2 ports), such that your current limit is 1A per 2 ports. If you don't plug anything into the second port then that's a full 5W available for charging your cell, warming your coffee, or powering your your toys.

how hard are people swinging this
i have a wii, and while my friends and i have gotten fairly worked up during play, none of us have come close to breaking a strap or launching the thing out of our hands. my sisters boyfriend has a wii as well, apparently he has launched it into the ceiling, but he wasn't wear the strap at the time. i'm curious as to how many of these accidents happened during proper usage. these are probably the same people that would have punched their televisions when the powerglove came out.
while i wasn 't brave enough to do with my new shiney toy, it someone else decided to see how much effort would go into breaking one of these "faulty" straps.

Re:Overboard
Nintendo should never have put straps on in the first place. They should have just told people to not let go.
On another note, Gizmodo has a bit on how strong the strap is...pretty strong if you ask me. -
instant booting over the horizon
it appears that some, including samsung do care and are looking to the future of speeding up boot times.
personally, i think this is a fantastic idea. i really love the fact that my powerbook can go from sleep mode to on in under a second. however this takes quite a bit of battery power to accomplish. wouldn't it be much better if they wrote out the memory to flash when the lid closes? then instead of sleeping, you'd be able to shut down and re start very quickly. -

Before anyone mentions NexGenWarsBefore anyone mentions nexgenwars.com, I think you should all read this forum thread about how the numbers are calculated. To anyone who has even an inkling of statistics and probablity, his methods should stand out as highly flawed. Until we have a good sales history and ample supply with which to predict the sales of these consoles, it would be best to stick to the official figures released by the respective companies and retail tracking organizations. (The latter of which is not yet available.)
Gamasutra is also reporting sales figures via Ebay for the two consoles. 15,000 PS3s were sold, while the Wii cracked 27,000 via the popular online auction site.
It's worth noting that 15,000 PS3 units could be as much as 10% of the North American supply. Given that we don't know the actual figures shipped, it's just as possible that 15,000 is 5% of the supply. Either way, it's a significant percentage of the PS3 consoles. -

Verizon To Censor YouTube For Cellphones
http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/cellphones/verizon
Watching YouTube videos on your Verizon Wireless cellphone will cost $15 per month, according to the New York Times. The deal is expected to be officially announced later today and launch next month but it's important to note that you won't be paying $15 per month for the YouTube you know and love. Nope, the video service will be a part of V Cast, Verizon's multimedia hub, and won't be a replication of the content you get on the actual YouTube Web site. The videos you'll actually be able to see are ones that have been "selected and approved by the companies...that [have] the broadest appeal and highest entertainment value." Um, isn't that the very definition of censorship? And what are the odds that some of the selected videos you'll see are ads for soap?
I would think that the massive popularity of YouTube can be attributed to videos that might not exactly meets Verizon's "editorial and taste" guidelines. Translation: don't expect too many video saying, "Verizon Sucks!"
Both Google, the new owners of YouTube, and Verizon are just thrilled to be offering us an anemic version of the popular video sharing Web site. But fear not, non-Verizon Wireless users: YouTube will only remain exclusive to Verizon for a "limited period of time."
So, who's willing to pay $15 per month for a censored, anemic version of YouTube that you can enjoy on a 1-inch screen? - Nicholas Deleon

Bullshit
Today, it almost seems that voice calls are the least-used function of most phones
Bullshit.
... while Wi-Fi and WiMax use ever-growing amounts of network bandwidth.
Double bullshit.
While cellphones/mobiles might have all sorts of ancillary functions they are still first and foremost telephones. That someone thinks otherwise indicates they need to stop reading Gizmodo & Engadget and get out in the real world for a few hours. As to WiMax taking up ever-growing amounts of network bandwidth, sure, if up from
.00000001 to .00000002 percent is worth blathering about.Find me a few production-level WiMax deployments with significant amounts of traffic and well talk. without such this is just so much empty talk wasting more bandwidth then WiMax has yet to carry.
Oh, and what to call mobile phones? How about mobiles like the rest of the planet? That wasnt so hard, was it?

Did you read your own link?Fanboys are bad, no matter what's their favorite company. If you read the "positive review" you linked, you'll find the sentence "The Zune's screen was bright even outside, and had pretty much zero glare" right under a picture of his reflection taking a picture of the screen. How much biased do you want to get today?
Or how about "The corners (meticulously selected down from hundreds of minutely different corners)"? Only marketroids write like that! What's so special about selecting the "best" radius for rounded corners? To write so emphatically on the corners right on the second paragraph seems to me like he had to strain to find anything positive to say. -
Big Surprise
What a surprise that the most negative review of the Zune that anybody could find would be posted on Slashdot.
I guess we'll just ignore the many, many more moderate reviews that rate the Zune as good, but no iPod killer. After all, we wouldn't want to represent the general consensus.
I could just as easily post very positive reviews of the Zune, but I guarantee those will never been seen on Slashdot's front page.
If I recall, virtually everybody dismissed Microsoft's entry into the game console market in much the same way. People criticized the Xbox as being inferior to the PS2, although in general they gave more credit to the Xbox than they're giving to the Zune. (Perhaps because the iPod fans have a bit more zealotry in their blood than the Sony fans.)
But as we learned from the Xbox360, which according to almost everybody is the tentative winner of the next gen console wars, Microsoft often uses the first release of a product as a test bed for their eventual successful strategy.
I suspect we'll look back in a few years as see the Zune as a predecessor of the device that finally kills the iPod. -
I wonder if.....
a positive review for the Zune, could make it as a story on slashdot?

This is SOOO futuristic that it won't happen soon
We've been hearing about this type of thing in science fiction books, then movies, and then in magazines like Popular Science for at least the past 20 years. While I think we probably have the technology to create the hornets, I seriously doubt we have the technology to have them fly very far then deliver some type of lethal force (e.g. poison) to a specific target.
Plus, it's reasonable to assume that $100's of millions would need to be invested in such a "nanohornet" for it to be feasible. Heck, the current world's smallest flying robot is massive compared to a bee, and can only fly a few minutes (yes, this link is from 2003, and the the robot is still considered the smallest working prototype of a flying robot).
In my opinion, the israelis need to invest in far better armor and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. During their conflict with Hezbollah, the UAVs were a huge success. Also, wouldn't highly armored robotic vehicles be better than a hornet? For example, maybe an armored ball (kind of like those hamster balls) that would essentially be indestructable and roll around doing reconaiscence and shooting things. Just a thought. -
Surprise surprise, it's not PS3 compatible...
... though whether it's down to Microsoft or Sony is unknown. But according to this article it's detected as an 'Unknown USB Device' by the PS3.

...and it has shitty marketing!
If you look at the first run of commercials-- which you will undoubtedly be seeing every time you turn on the TV--you've got to wonder just what the hell Microsoft is thinking.
These ads show people out in public, at parties and concerts, with friends; there's talking, laughing, dancing; a DJ or a band playing music. And somehow you're supposed to make the connection that these are the perfect places to put on your headphones and listen to your own music.
"Wow, I'm glad I paid $20 for a ticket to this concert with all of these people! Now I'm going to listen to my $250 Zune by myself! Welcome to the Social." -

For me, Gizmodo, Kotaku, Engadget, InquirerThey all seem part of some sort of Microsoft network... and would be cited as examples of "Adver-Blogging".
Aside from selective "journalism", they're headlines include:
Sony Hates Europeans, Will Prevent The Importing of PS3
Why the PS3 Needs Lots of Power
Microsoft Blogger Says PS3 Online "Likely Underwelming" Sony: "European gamers come second" The only reason they report on the PS3 is to put a negative spin on it, and get people to think they're a credible news source, rather than a fanboy site or a sponsored Microsoft site. It's a shame that these "news sources" show up on Google News over more credible sites like IGN. -
