We live in a drug laden society.
For those of you who have watched the "BBC Horizon - 2008-02-05 - Is Alcohol Worse than Ecstasy?" [available at http://www.mininova.org/tor/1173622%5D realize that alcohol and tobacco are among the worst offenders when it comes to drugs. I turn on the TV at times (very few times) and see wholesale promotion of drug use by budweiser, Miller, and a whole slew of drug-pushing beer companies. I say legalize ALL drugs and sell them including alcohol and tobacco ONLY at state drug stores and tax them all. I'm tired of all of the drug related crime here and abroad. Put all drugs on a level playing field, don't promote one dangerous one over another. Scott Emick Euclid, Ohio

Re:To recreate Blade Runner...
To be fair, Rutger Hauer doesn't need to destroy the movies he's in; they're already rubbish (Bladerunner and Hitcher being about the only exceptions).
Ladyhawke is also unrubbish.

Interesting
I hadn't even noticed that Hamas had so many videos on youtube.
Those interested should check out http://youtube.com/watch?v=U8Nj-QKQkCo and related videos.
Also an interesting movie I watched recently was "suicide killers". It contains many interviews with suicide bombers right before they kill themselves, and many interviews with failed suicide bombers in Israeli prisons.

Maybe I am just strange, but I find it absolutely fascinating how a group of people can have such a strong hatred of Israel. It's a really fucked up situation for both sides, but I think it is very important for both sides to be heard. -

I like zebra striping that uses a virtual 'ruler'. It highlights the row that you're currently on, then you can very easily zip across the columns and see what you're actually on.
mininova has a great implementation of this imho. I liked it so much I stole the CSS for my personal websites. -

Re:Problems with the service
I paid my $5 for the album download the day before yesterday, but still haven't managed to download my MP3s. The server took such a severe beating initially that the connection dropped consistently.. a snowball's chance in hell getting the album.
I decided to wait for the traffic to ease off, but later I've been greeted with an error message "Exceeded download limit" or "Please click the download link in your origi(o)nal email".
I've contacted NIN support twice for help. No response.
Should have known better. I'm surprised if I'm the only one with these problems.
Then go torrent it. It's licensed under creative commons. All those torrents are legal. Have fun.
Why Trent didn't set up his own bit torrent tracker and save boatloads of bandwidth is beyond me. A few ads on the free download page to make > 0 revenue off those opting for the free version wouldn't have hurt either. -
Re:Not Typical NIN, Give It A Listen!
I had known that Adrian Belew was doing some work with Trent, but I didn't realize this release was to include that music until just now (having listened to the download that I started this morning upon returning home...).
I've been geeking out on Adrian Belew lately, as I usually do when I get a chance to see him live. He's currently on tour with an amazing band and, if you can, you should (IMHO!) hurry to see them.
Here's some media from my time last week:
Pics from The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano and the Belly Up in Solana Beach.
Videos from the Belly Up (1) (2) (3) on YouTube.
A recording I made from the Belly Up on a digital voice recorder (via Mininova).
Listen, look, (hopefully) enjoy, then try and see them before the tour finishes. This Power Trio is amazing!
Here's some tour info as well. -
Re:Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics
Well, you can take your own arguments as sufficient to leave the subject rest. Or you can reserve judgment and take in further data. As to your first point: the book I directed you to is anything but sketchy, it is very well-referenced. If you don't trust the book, you can still trace the source material it references. If you don't care to invest money in it, here is a freely downloadable article that covers part of the topic, and it is well-referenced too: http://www.jpands.org/vol11no2/ayoub.pdf
As to autism and vaccines, quite a few informed and qualified people are of the opinion that there is in fact such a link. You say the correlations are just not there. I am aware that there are quite a few (typically industry sponsored) studies that purport to show through statistics there is nothing to it. But then, let me point out the title of this thread. For an alternate opinion, download and watch the following video: http://www.mininova.org/tor/1113910
As to conspiracies, well they do happen. Seeing well-funded and well-coordinated denial of realities obviously present in raw data pretty much implies conspiracy, But it leaves the question of why. Digging a little deeper, though, does allow a good case for an answer to the question "why?" to be made. The latter part of the following talk does just that: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6890106663412840646

Re:Biggest tracker and it showsMininova is a pretty good substitute for Demonoid. They are easily searchable, have a good selection, and a "thanks" feature which discourages spam and fakes.

Re:Just great!Good point. With handicap ramps now the norm in building construction, they'll be quite practical too. Wanted: apartment in multi-story building with no elevator. Close proximity to gun store preferred.
Everyone knows Daleks have this ridiculous useless sink plunger on the front. Dalek rayguns only point forward so you're safe if you keep behind them because they can't turn fast. And above all, Daleks can't climb the stairs.
Yeah. Everyone knows that.
(Some of them _prefer_ not to climb the stairs, finding an alternative approach more aesthetically satisfying, but that's another matter

PREAIR Torrents in 2007
Is this why there have been so many "PREAIR" torrents released this past Fall? I guess there's an incentive for producers to show earlier-than-airdate statistics to broadcasters as a way to convince them of the program's expected popularity. http://www.mininova.org/search/?search=PREAIR

What happens if you want to pull out your copy of Orange Box and play it ten years from now? Will you be able to?
It won't be a problem. I can guarantee you that The Orange Box will be completely playable at any time in the future. (Software companies only win if you let them.) -
Re:I hate reruns
I hate reruns - not sure who else would want to watch old Daily Show clips.
Lots of people apparently like Daily Show re-runs: http://www.mininova.org/tor/578304 (44 gigs, 635 episodes, tons of extras). It's a nice collection, though it doesn't include any episodes from 2007. The extras alone are worth the download. -

Re:How much harm exactly?
>>Curious, I don't see or hear of the RIAA suing anyone for this massive theft of sharing CD's.
It was in the leaked Media Defender emails, IIRC. Actually, I think that the numbers were closer to 85% CD trading, 15% P2P transfers.
True though, that you don't see big lawsuits from physical trades - but mind you how difficult that would be to enforce. How would you catch people? Sting operations? Surveillance? It is gobs easier to have computers do automated searching and track IP addys. There's a trail to track - unlike you taking your best friend's CD home overnight.
>>I don't even hear them talking about it.
But you do hear about them doing things that would hinder it, right? DRM? Sony rootkit?
>>This is an industry plan to wipe out Fair Use, plain and simple.
Well... that might very well be (esp. with the witness saying that copying one's own property for one's own use is piracy,) but the lawsuit is definitely targeting the idea of actual copyright infringement.
(Aside, the tape-vs-mp3 thing... it'd depend on the cassette quality, the hardware, etc. It really doesn't take that many tape generations to notice significant degradation. Tape tends to stretch and wear out (physical contact with the read head) over time. Also it'll depend on the bitrate of the mp3. Quality doesn't just mean loss, but includes it as well as noise, encoding artifacts, etc... but I'm wandering.)
The lawsuit isn't questioning true Fair Use. It is about transferral of songs that people don't have bought ownership to. Think old-school... Libraries. You are allowed to photocopy a couple pages of a book (Fair Use) but not allowed to copy huge sections of it - the photocopies are also lossy. Same idea here. Fair Use should let you use/copy/transfer 30-secs (or whatever) of any song - not entire songs, certainly not entire albums.
A virtually worthless MP3 is subjective. But ... argh, hate to bring it up ... its not too hard to trade lossless CD bit-perfect quality over the net anymore. ( http://www.mininova.org/search/?search=flac Note: dig the ones EAC was used on!)
Again, the "best" music is subjective. Some people love Brittany Spears, while others (like myself) find her to be completely devoid of any musical ability, let alone innovation. (btw, I do love archive.org.)
Hey, I'm not trying to defend the actions of the RIAA. I think they're some of the biggest wankers out there. They screw us over with their tactics and, perhaps more importantly, they screw the artists over with their contracts.
I didn't think my initial post would lead the talk this way. *sigh* I'm done with this thread... flame on! -
