400,000 CD storage facility
>
... as many as 30,000 CDs and DVDs on hand ...
Pththth, amateurs. These guys are storing almost 400,000 AOL cds -
Re:Nothing to hide?
Maybe they could get together with this guy and bury a couple of tons of AOL disks around their property before the backhoes get there...
-
Best chance ever...
...for nomoreaolcds.com to get rid of a huge bunch of AOL-Platinum-Membership- and AOL-Gold-Membership-CDs.
Just offer that poor family for a nominal fee of only $1M to bury their (at this point) 399176 AOL-CDs and wait for the big fun. -
Uh oh
Now how are they going to reach their goal?
-
Sad News
No More AOL CDs, while they may accomplish the goal of stopping CDs from being sent out, may not be able to achieve that goal of rolling up to AOL HQ with a million CDs.
-
Re:AOL Weapon Of Mass DestructionGreat idea! It's so great somebody is already doing it
Statues, sculptures, and everything.

Bad deals this weekI thought eBay buying skype would be a bad deal.
But Microsoft buying AOL would make a company more eval than.. (remember M$ is already the most evil company, or was it Google nowadays?)
No More AOL CDs would have send the Millions CDs to Redmond then...that would be fun indeed.
I can't wait for my AOL CD with Windows Vista trial on it.
-
Re:AOL = evil.
-
here's a suggestion for them..
what are their hopes for finding new jobs?
I recommend they print up millions of copies of their resumes and mail them out to everyone in the United States. If they play their cards right, they should be able to get computer manufacturers to place an icon for their resume on the desktop of every computer sold. They should also cut deals with publishers to include their resumes bundled with mainstream consumer magazines. They should print their resumes on non-biodegradable media so that someone will start a website called "NoMoreAOLResumes".
Appropriate plug for above reference. -
Here's another one:
-
OR...
you can so kindly donate those unwanted AOL cd's to this cause...No More AOL CD's
-
Re:Coasters
I think a better destination for those CDs would be the good folks at http://nomoreaolcds.com/. In case you haven't heard, once they've gathered 1 million CDs they are going to dump them on AOL's front lawn.
Sure you'll spend a bit on postage, but this way you get a little revenge, and you aren't polluting. -
Which one is the CD-Company?
Is AOL (Access) or AOL (Audience) sending me these CDs?
If YOU want to get rid of them send them to:
No More AOL CDs!

Re:Note to Slashdot Populace:
Are you sure they are sending use the distro on cd? All it said is "To order a pressed CD: Fill in your basic shipping data in our CD distribution database. We won't give or sell your information to anyone or use it for anything other than sending you these CDs.".
Maybe what they're sending us is the AOL cds that was donated by No More AOL CDs. ;) -
Re:At least you *could* install Windows...
They might as well have sent them 10,000 AOL CDs.
Don't forget, someone is already working on that -
Recycling ideas...
See the "creativity corner" at the bottom of this page.
This might keep them busy for a while ;) -
Re:Security?
-
Re:thats all well and good...
The ARMY can't help with the AOL cd's, but there is a few organizations that are trying to. There is one arganization that is trying to collect a million of them (probably the amount that AOL delivers to ONE Barnes and Noble location alone..lol) and then send them all back ot AOL headquarters. Click here to check out www.nomoreaolcds.com

Re:Use AOL? Are you nuts?
Perhaps you could put them towards a worthy cause.

Use AOL? Are you nuts?
When I first read this, I read "AOL Dicks". In all honesty, they are the type of people who really need this sort of guide. Nerds have their own patterns and be damned anyone who steps in and tries to change them. I like the part about going outside, or becoming social. You shouldn't wait for an outage in order for that to happen, as it is more stable to have set times when you go outside. Nerds will agree that having a good schedule makes for a sensible life that has meaning, and positive ebb and flow. Maybe there are times when panic sets in, but for the most part, geeks without internet are geeks who suddenly shed their reclusive behaviour and gently stretch, as they crawl out from their stagnant dens of computing supremacy. Perhaps we spend too much time in there anyway?
I can think of a hundred better things to do with an AOL CD than actually using it... well at least one! This article has a place in our lives if we work techsup, as a guide to give users. The only problem is reading the URL on the phone to them!
If the net has to go down in order for you to spend time with your spouse, you are sunk anyway, and she's prolly got the divorce papers drawn up, and can't get enough face time with you to get a signature. I have set times I spend with my family, but I also have flex times, when anyone can interrupt what I'm doing. Good policy if you like having a family, and wish to keep it. -
Re:This won't work.
Instead of returning to sender, everyone should send them to these guys
-
Fun things to do with THESE cds...
This could be just the boost that No More AOL CDs needs...
Come on guys, they are 1/4 of the way to a million AOL cds...send the new ones you have in with the old ones collecting dust in your closet!
Any other fun things to do with AOL CDs? -
Re:Is this an AOL 9.0ism?
For other software, it might be in the 8.1 release, with some minor feature enhancements and fixes. But no, AOL skips right over the incrementals. 6.0 to 7.0 to 8.0. Why bother with the
.0 at the end? I don't get it.Oh well, more cds for nomoreaolcds.com

Re:CD's...
here's a good one about their cds!!
america online, made in mexico. i've also seen ones from taiwan.
HERE'S what needs done with them :) -
Re:Hurray!
-
Re:Wow!
Then send them to nomoreaolcds.com!
-
Re:Ah yes....
I mean what the heck do we do with them.
Send 'em to the guys at nomoreaolcds.com.
They have a goal to collect 1 million CDs. Once they reach their goal (or some subset therof), they're going to pile the CDs on some trucks, drive them across the nation in a big media spectacle, and give them back to AOL.
-
Re:Ah yes....
>> I mean what the heck do we do with them.
We could do these of if it really bothers you join up here.
These guys have collected 150000+ cd's already to forward to america.... :) -
Re:AOL
Dang! Where are all those AOL CDs when I actually WANT them?
Right here.
-
Re:AOLWhere are all those AOL CDs when I actually WANT them?
Probably you've sent them to http://www.nomoreaolcds.com/.
BTW: If I read the article that says aCD Rom is a bomb ready to explode I really wonder if we can sue AOL for deploying weapons of mass destruction. *eg* -
Re:Uhhh..
Just send them to these guys. http://www.nomoreaolcds.com Will they ever hit their goal?? Who knows! But, I personally can't wait to see this cross-country convoy of AOL cds.
:-) -J -
Re:What I want to know is...i started such attempt too. got lazy and it never went far.
check this site out though: www.nomoreaolcds.com and consider putting those cd's to a larger cause!
-
Doesn't sound funny at all, actually...
"It may sound funny, but if AOL started sending out CD's like this I might just start keeping them around."
Back when AOL used to send out 3.5" floppy discs a lot of people wanted to get as many as possible. They'd format the discs, rip off the label, put their own label on and use it later.
I remember seeing sites that listed a bunch of methods on how to get more. Thanks to AOL you never had to buy floppys again! But unfortunately, as everyone knows, they switched to CDs and now everyone would rather see less of 'em. If they were rewritable that would probably be a different story for many -- and thus even if CDR-ROM was an option AOL might not do it for this very reason. -
Re:speaking of aol...
As of February 19, the No More AOL CDs project has collected 141,803 CDs.
-
Re:Odd?
-
Levy the AOL CDs!
What they really need to do is levy the AOL CDs that keep clogging my mailbox! Now that's a law I would get behind!
-
Most noble use
Send them to the guys at "No More AOL CDs.com"". When they get enough, they'll send them back to AOL! "We represent all who are sick of receiving unwanted AOL cds. By sending us your unwanted AOL, Netscape, or CompuServe cds, you can help us make a statement. Once we have 1,000,000 collected, we will make our quest across America to give them all back to their rightful owner, AOL and say "stop doing this". Don't throw them away or get mad, send'em to us and we'll all end this wasteful practice while sharing a laugh or two."
-
a comment that's NOT about this being a dupe!
umm, since when is AOhell worried about SPAM? the emails are one thing, they're easy to delete and don't harm the environment. Stamping enough CDs for every person in the world to get ten of them... now THAT is wasteful! no one wants AOL, when will they learn!?
-
send them to nomoreaolcds.com
send them to nomoreaolcds.com so they can dump them on aol's front lawn!
-
Re:Here's a few...I think a while back there was a web site that was going to start collection of aol cd's until they got a nice amount and then they were going to go to aol HQ and toss them at the front door
:)Yep, that would be the good folks at No More AOL CDs.
Here's an article about the website.
-
They're after a million...
...and had 103,000 as at today.
Unsurprisingly, you can get there by typing "aol cds" into Google and clicking "I'm Feeling Lucky". -
Re:That's so ironic it hurts
Perhaps instead of cheap books, which actually do have some monetary value, we could take a cue from these guys.
-
Re:AOL, GM and FORD
What about all those frigin "free" AOL disks being sent to our homes? I suggest AOL to be forced to for recycling (like a 5 cent deposit for cans). The idea is basically an extenstion of what certain people are already doing. Similar ideas been already mention on slashdot and CNN
Basically my idea is, when people recieve these "junk" AOL disks, they should be able to drop of these disks, at a certified, recycling plant to get a small return (for their recycling effor). Like 5 cents per a disk. The 5 cents would be paid by AOL. This way, the dump sites would have less waste to dispose.
Something like this would require a federal law to be implimented and enforced. Perhaps the US Post Office (and other mailing places) would take the deposit and return when the cd's are returned.
Any ideas on this? -
Re:I used to
Send your CDs to www.nomoreaolcds.com. They will have a good use for them

Re:Why return CDs to AOL
Question number four on nomoreaolcds.com's FAQ - AOL doesn't see those disks and doesn't have to pay any more postage, it's just more work for the post office guys
-
It's unanimous
-
x-prize
wft is X-Prize ? Someone care to enlighten me ?
