Palm and MicrosoftAs a palm user this has left a bad feeling in my stomach.
Does this herald a new age of Palm becoming another licencee of Windows Mobile Technology? Check out this link http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_story.asp?ID=80 02Any of my fellow
/.ers like to predict the future for Palm? -
Re:Graffiti-Style Input?
It can be done on most models, according to the Palm Info Center:
http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_story.asp?ID=58 30
You will also need the Graffiti 1 files, either from your old Palm or from http://users.wpi.edu/~ahecht/palm.html -
Palm OS?
Well the rumor as of a few months ago http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_story.asp?ID=7
6 01/ was that Nintendo either licensing the Palm OS or some apps and/or technology.
Personally I think this would be a wonderful move on Nintendo's part. With the competition between NDS and the PSP so close why not take full advantage of the DS's trump card: input! The DS may never be the pr0n machine that Sony has turned out but surely it would be trivial to throw on a few hundred dollars worth of functionality with a cartridge (or even firmware in the next revision).
Honestly, of all the fucked up unfounded speculation to me this just makes plain sense. If you take Nintendo at theor word this is supposedly a machine for adults - so lets see some adult software. -
How to fix the digitizer drift problem.
I had the Tungsten MAD digitiser drift problem - it turns out that it's a hardware problem that can be fixed fairly easily, if you're happy with opening the device up.
To summarise, it looks like the screen digitiser cable connection gets a bit wonky, due to the pcb behind the buttons being loose.
Open it up, and wedge the pcb in place with something - I used a couple of bits of broken matchstick, and put a piece of gaffa tape over the cable connection.
There are detailed instructions at http://www.gethightech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?S creen=CTGY&Store_Code=GHT&Category_Code=_tungsten_ takeapart and a discussion at http://www.palminfocenter.com/forum/viewtopic.php? t=15458&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=48
I use my tungsten every day now, and it now needs recalibrating every 6 months or so, rather than every time I open it. I can't imagine that I'll ever buy another Palm though, even when they do start using Linux. -
Handspring Treo 90
Yes, it's a glorified PDA. However, it has a usable thumbboard and supports SD/MMC cards for file transfer. Being a PalmOS device, there is plenty of support for synching with the platform of your choice. It's also small enough to fit in your jeans pocket (unlike the fancier Tungsten C).
Shame they're not made any more. -
Re:More like a voice controlled remote control
check that - put it on a laptop or a Palm. Hey, that would be cool! Voice recognition for Palm. then I could RULE THE WORLD!!!!!!!! http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_story.asp?ID=7

Re:They ARE crippling the products
who's to say it's not Sprint?
palminfocenter.com for one
geek.com for another.
Yes, the Treo 600 supposedly didn't have the wiring to drive a wifi card, but "legal issues" are what's cited as the main concern. These links are the first couple of hits on a quick google search, but I spent a couple of days researching this in early 2004. Back then, SanDisk had more info on their site about the legal battles with PalmOne that were preventing the driver releases. SyChip, who wrote the drivers, wanted to release them, as did Sandisk, but Palm was claiming that due to the Palm / PalmOne split, there was confusion about who owned the rights to the code, and who could authorize the drivers.
It was pretty clear that Palm didn't want wifi support out there, unless they were the ones charging a premium for it. -
I have a good one
A Palm T3 plus a PalmOne Wi-fi Card plus a NetChaser software. It works great, lots of details, can log the details of the access points found to file.
It's quite expensive if you want a wi-finder device and don't have a palm. But if you already have a palm with wi-fi, it's a cheap ($12.00) fun toy. -

Considering these recent news, you shouldn't have to wait too long before it happens.

Discount specials?
The last versions don't seem too bad (not that I've tried PDAs). I wonder how cheap they'll be discounted before they disappear?

messed up link- Link to PalmInfocenter Article palmOne is still the leading seller of PDA's, HP is second followed by RIMM

Re:The most essential is ...
There was a Palm OS 4 emulator out awhile ago. I'm not sure if it was GPL'd or commercial software, but I tried it out, and was able to play Dope Wars on it. you might be able to find info on it at palminfocenter.

Palm Tungsten T5 could launch next Monday.
According Palminfocenter and the Register, Palm Tungsten T5
could come as early as next Monday. -
In other news...
...Sony releases the Clie VZ90. To bad it's for Japan only, as Sony has decided to pull out of USA and Europe when comes to PDAs.

Review and More Info
Here is a nice full review from PalmInfocenter. It goes into full details and testing of the new SDIO Wireless card from PalmOne.
Some have asked how is this different than the SanDisk SDIO Wireless card for Palm that was released a short time ago. This description from SanDisk explains that its card is only for the Palm Zire 71 and products using recent versions of MS PocketPC. The new PalmOne card supports the Zire 72 and Tungsten T3, which the SanDisk card does not (apparently due to driver compatibility issues).
I own a PalmOne Tungsten E, which is the business value model, and there is not wireless support via SDIO cards, and doesn't look to be one available due to the power constraints of the Tungsten E model. Apparently, there have been some tests run with the SanDisk card on the Tungsten E, and it will work, but long-term effects on the SDIO slot have not been studied, and there could be damaging effects on the unit. Tungsten E users that want some sort of wireless connection should check out the Enfora Wireless Portfolio Case which seems to be the only wireless connection available for the Tungsten E.
Personally, I don't need wireless via my PDA since I already have a laptop and wireless card, but I know it is a nice feature, and on a future PDA I would want wireless to be available.

Re:Treo!
There have been rumors in the Palm user community of a Bluetooth Treo for a while, but PalmOne has been quiet about an official release.
If you're into hacking, there's a bounty posted for the first working Bluetooth SDIO driver on an existing Treo 600. -

Re:Smartmedia cards not indestructable
And just too late, I found a more specific article:
http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_story.asp?ID=60 86 -
lets a smart phone be an iPod free of carriers
Indeed. I don't want to carry a phone and an iPod because I don't have three ears for two headsets. But I'd happily pay the money to put some decent storage on my next smartphone so I can listen to music on its hands-free headset.
The division between a high-end phone and a smartphone/PDA is becoming one of expandability. My spouse's excellent Sanyo VM 4500 plays sounds, pictures, and videos, but has no expandability: Sprint doesn't support the phone's built-in Java and PC docking capability because they want you to get media by paying them $15 a month. Meanwhile the promising Samsung SPH-i550 runs PalmOS and has the SD expansion slot and explicit docking. That's what I want.
Another amazing way to get your media on the go is using Rendezvous and Wi-Fi to share it from strangers. No memory card or phone network required.

It's not likely they were having Problems selling them, they were the number 2 PalmOS Based PDA seller, and The Number 3 Overall. They also had the number 2 and 7 best selling PDA.
Maybe they were expecting to sell more than this, or maybe most of those sales are outside the US. -
Re:Howto: Replace Graffiti 2 with Original Graffit
I think that you want to do this: go to palminfocenter.com
You use the a href tag: [a href="http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_stor y.asp?ID=5830"]blah blah [/]
where you swap the [] for the less than and greater than signs. hth -
Re:Graffiti2 to Graffiti1 fix?Is there a fix for devices like the Clie to return it to using the original Graffiti pen strokes?
Yes there is a way. You have to get the Graffiti1 files from a Palm OS 5 device such as the Palm Tungsten T.
This article explains how.
The letter i in Graffiti2 is really anoying, also k and t are a pain. Making x a two stroke character is acceptable only because it occurs so infrequently in English.
-
Re:Palm died for me when...
PalmOne can't, but you can always do it yourself.
-
Well, kinda...
The new Palms, like my Tungsten E, use the new Grafitti 2 system, not the superior Grafitti system. You can't end a word with the letter "l" that doesn't end a sentence (is followed by a space). You'll get a "t" instead. Infuriating.
I'm considering going back to G1 using these instructions.
While G2 might be better than selecting letters from a ten-button keypad, it's certianly a giant leap backwards from the original Grafitti. -
Re:They should really team up with the no 1
I'd love to see your numbers. Especially when they disagree with you so.
-
This would be great in the PDA world
but would be fabulous as a feature built into Mozilla or Opera
Well, I think this would be a great feature for one of these PDAs that have 802.11b -- the small screens could use creative, alternative ways to browse the web. -

This thing is JUST like the Nokia Communicator
Think about it. It's WAY too big to be a wristwatch (Comminicator is too big to be a phone, IMHO) and it probably costs quite a pretty penny, too. Probably in a similar fashion there'll be that small group of people who will want one and who think they just couldn't live without one.... and then they smash it against a sharp corner or something
;)
Seriously, PDA screens are fragile things and wrists constantly bumb into stuff. I don't think there would be any way for someone to convince me to buy one of these, not after I've had a look at the Palm graveyard (Here's a link) -
Am I missing something?
"I can't play Legend Zelda, Final Fantasy, or Dragon Warrior on my Palm V."
A quick google-search for palm nintendo emulator turns up this as the first result... -
Screenshots are here...
Here are the screenshots. But better open them in a different window 'Slashdot User!'
-
NVIDIA is going to enhance Cobalt devices
I saw this at the bottom of the article. NVIDIA is going to enhance the graphics for devices using Cobalt and Garnet. They're going to "bring advanced multimedia support to the OS". I thought it was pretty cool; although it makes my PDA sound so old and boring.
-
What I've GatheredPalm OS 6, according to palminfocenter.com, is basically redesigned from the ground up to embrace wireless networking. Palm OS 5 is staying because, quite honestly, it works. I never owned an earlier generation PDA, but I swear by my T3. I haven't experienced any of the bugs I hear about from OS 3 users.
Plus, it doubles as my mp3 player to take to work in the morning (with the addition of a handy SD Cruzer drive) and it impresses the heck out of people.
-
Re:Open Source Opportunity
But porting Gaim to PalmOS I assume is a much bigger task.
Maybe they're waiting for Palm OS 6 to be generally available. It's a true preemptive multitasking OS (finally) and done by a lot of the original Be developers.
Pity Palm/Handspring just released the Treo 600. An updated phone+PDA with Bluetooth running OS 6 and Gaim would be the ultimate communication tool.
-
Re:again with the linux....
Another thing about the Fossil PDA Watch, it's vapor. Here's a story from Palm infocenter regarding the delay of the watch. Fossil never released tehse and it looks, to me, like they used the same chassis/desgin in the MSN SPOT watches. So this is probably why it was not done with a Fossil PDA Watch.
-
Why they didn't use a software programmable watch
Because the linux watch is a is a prototype that will not be marketed and the PalmOS watch is vaporware.
-
You bet. Bluetooth SIG Adopts Bluetooth v1.2.Nov 6
Would a dying standard be releasing a new specification version? Don't think so.
The naysayers can eat their statements. Wifi wasn't cheap and took a while to take hold. Same case with bluetooth.
The Palm Tungsten 3 does not include a wifi chip but a bluetooth one. Because a wifi chip takes up more power. For portable devices, bluetooth will become de facto in the coming year. -
Re:Smaller, or Larger?
what are we gonna end up with - implantable PDAs and PDAs that are mini-laptops?
On the Laptop end, the Clie' UX-50 is making a stab at laptop-esqueness, and on the other, Fossil keeps trying PalmOS PDA/watches on the market, but can't seem to find the 'sweet spot' balance of functionality/price/usability to make them viable. -
Re:These things look pretty sweet.
Since you have a IIIx you can use the Graffiti Replacement Trick. The reason Palm moved to Graffiti 2 is because Xerox sued Palm over a unistroke character patent.

New Sony Clies too
Sony also announced two Clies today, which cost $200 and $250 respectively. Not bad, but not revolutionary.
