Re:Sony is screwedSony is screwed... I'll still be buying a PS3 though. No 1st gen title will be able to match something as good as gears of war (or as good as it should be). I see no reason for someone to buy a PS3 over a 360 this holiday season unless they already own a 360 (which I'm sure most of the first PS3 buyers will).
Sony could be screwed, but the PS3 does seem to shaping up as good as and probably better than the 360. Resistance: Fall of Man looks mighty fine, as does Motorstorm, so I don't think the PS3 has any problems at all in the graphics department.
As for buying a PS3 over a 360, I suppose the better question is why you would pick an XBox 360 instead of a PS3 or a Wii. The Wii is cheaper and more fun (or so Nintendo would claim). So if money is an issue you'd buy a Wii. If money isn't an issue, why not splash out the extra and benefit from the better HD support, bluray player, games with more content, video playback, browser, content streaming, better controller, PS2 game compatibility and the other things that an extra $100 would buy you over the 360 premium.
Personally I think anyone who buys a console on the first day is asking for trouble since they never live up to the hype. Better to wait until the dust has settled, production issues are resolved and then walk into a store when there is plenty of stock and plenty of games to choose from.

Re:Lets Think About This a Second
Cite your source... mine says they are. That's why they're called Simulation Games, and not just Simulations (although the genre is mentioned in simulations, but as a video game)
And in case you're not a wikipedia fan... Sony thinks of Gran Tourismo as a game too..
Time to call it quits, don't you think? -

The "port" is included, but the cable will not be included. (#6)

Tokyo Game Show
And the footage of PS3 launch and near launch games is starting to hit the Net.
Here's Motorstorm's latest:
http://www.us.playstation.com/Content/OGS/GMID-015 /Site/
Here's what the PS3 boxes and retail units look like:
http://www.gfdata.de/archiv09-2006-gamefront/2242. html
And Sony's TGS conference starts at 6pm Pacific time today. It sounds like it is going to be insane. Devil May Cry 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, and a ton of other games are all supposed to be shown. From the insane look of the PS3 games at this early stage I guess those PS3 devkits must be pretty fucking sweet to work on if the games look this good already. -
Re:the controller has me worried
You might check out Eye Toy. It's a lot of fun and makes you sweat.

Re:Pinch Those Pennies! Ouch!
No, just THE ONLY OTHER CONSOLE THAT DOES HD
The XBox 360 Premium http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_ id=4103879#Features+%26+Specifications includes component cables which allows HD, I cannot find anything on Sony's website http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/about.html that says it will even include those cables. Also, there does not yet exist an HDMI cable for the 360 so it is not even an option while for the PS3 since it is a normal HDMI output they can easily include an HDMI cable. Another big difference is the the PS3 premium system is TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS more than the XBox 360 premium bundle, for that much of a price difference they should include the god damn cable. Cables are not expensive to make, but stores (and console makers) love to charge a shitload for them.
So you fail this argument, the 360 includes the best cable that is available while the PS3 doesn't. -
Re:Separate box just for the gaming HW?
What may occur is a separate box consisting of the GFX card, Physics Card, AI card, PSU for the above along with supporting memory modules just to power existing games.
what an interesting idea. -
Re:Blu-Ray curse
That's not true. You'll have the ability to use Blu-Ray, just not at 1080p. From the playstation.com website under specification: Video output in HD requires cables and an HD-compatible display, both sold separately. Copy-protected Blu-ray video discs can ony output at 1080p using an HDMI cable connected to a device that is compatilble with the HDCP standard. HDMI cable not included Additional equipment may be required to use the HDMI connector. http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/specs.html So call me a fanboy and a troll for not jumping on the Doom and Gloom of the anti Sony hype machine that is

Warranty was only 90 days anyway
According to this page. The warranty is only 90 days on the 360, which means that if you bought it on or around the launch day, in November, your warranty expired 3 months ago.
To be unbiased, the PS2 also had a 90 day warranty as well. The gamecube has a twelve month warranty. -
Re:One thing to consider.
I'm a bit unconvinced about it, Sony themselves still seem to use the "Spiderman movie" logo, like here. The old PlayStation text is gone, long live PLAYSTATION (why do companies keep on doing stupid things with capitalisation? We know your logo is all upper / lower case, you don't have to keep on using it that way in your press releases, it looks stupid...)

Re:$499? $599?
Irony - the advertising campaign for the PS1 in
.nz and .au centered around the phrase "The Third Place". -
Re:It's pretty much 100%.
Not entirely true. The new slimline PS2 has its own compatibility issues and Sony still keeps the earlier list of problems on their Consumer Alerts page. So, if you were to go out right now and buy said replacement unit, even more PS1 games wouldn't work than before, in addition to whichever PS2 titles don't work on the slimlines.

Re:Insomniac Put Me To Sleep
I'd guess a periodic fee or share of revenue at least. In reality Sony stands to gain a lot from this kind of connectivity - especially since MS Live won't do it yet. They've also taken on the risk of building this stuff tho - so they've got a right to get something upfront. I guess you could have a look at their Beyond site and see if it tells you anything.

Re:Could it be a hit?
- It's the first ping-pong game to have come out in years.
Want a bet?
Here's one
Here's another
And another
And another (it's one of the included games in Eye Toy: Play 2)
There's more, and I could keep going. There was even one in Japan that I'm forgetting the name of that came with a set of ping pong paddle controllers with sensors built in so you could play in first-person (similar to the way the Eye Toy game works, but without needing an Eye Toy).
Most of these have not been released in the US, sure, but you don't think there's a reason for that? Do you think Rockstar knows something about Ping Pong that every other publisher doesn't? Maybe. But then again, maybe not.
- It's probably also the first ping-pong game to have decent graphics.
Take a look at the screenshots in the first link. All modern ping pong games look at least pretty good. The Rockstar game will probably look better just because it's on the Xbox 360, but it won't be the first ping pong game with "decent" graphics. They all have decent graphics.
- Whilst ping-pong isn't going to attract many gamers into GTA, it could be a hit amongst asian gamers.
And as you can see, this is hardly an underserved market. It's really not much different than Capcom deciding to make a basketball game and some guy in Japan says "this could be popular among Americans. Basketball is popular there." Ummm... hello? NBA Live? NBA 2K6? NBA Street? NBA Ballers? How many games in a particular genre do you need?
And anyway, Asians don't own Xbox 360's. This game is not for them. And nobody there is going to buy an Xbox 360 just to play an American-style ping pong game. -
Re:Who are they kidding?
Yeah, actually I appreciate the work they've done on linux for the ps2 - it's cool (even if it costs about $200 in Europe and is no longer available in the US). But sony is a split up company. PS2 techeads might not be the same people trying to stop you from using your computer transfer Sony camcorders, mp3 players + other peripheral devices so it doesn't get cracked in 6 months instead of 12. And that's optimistic - 4 years on Sony net-mindisc players + walkmen (old or new) still can't transfer mp3 files under linux.

Re:Prostitutes?
Nah, Chtullu surely would be the last cheap-almost-unbeatable (or even secret?) boss of this game. Actually, would be great to fight him as a Colossus!

Re:I'm not convinced about internet radio...
nd no i'm not going to connect my computer up to the stereo becase evry time someone IM's me or I get an email or windows breaks you get horible alert noises that would drive everyone insane!
Airtunes is your friend. I stream to two stereos from my machine in the office remote controlled by the PSP and no alert noises (e.g. incoming email) interferes with this.
If you use Airfoil you can use pretty much any application that processes audio. -
LocationFree
Old news - the technology's called LocationFree, the LocationFree player was already included in PSP firmware 2.5, as was already reported here, with the PS3 as PVR story repeated too many times to even bother pointing you there.

Re:I can understand why . . . .
Just thought I should let you know, Sony supports modding the PS2, they have even offered a kit for it. I think that their PS3 may come with it already installed. I guess this sorda takes the fun out of it.

Re:Well, duh...
See, there's this little known site called "Slashdot", they ran something on it.
Or you can go with Joystiq, or GamesFirst!, and there's always the Wikipedia.
Hey, you can always try Google for more articles, there are plenty!
But if you REALLY want a Sony press release, the only one I can find about the PS3 PERIOD is this one, and they're notably silent about online support - the word "online" appears ONCE. -
Wrong, Sony has donated...
... at least $500,000 for Katrina relief, and is matching employee contributions up to $1 million. I have not great love for the company, but all this demonizing gets old after awhile.

EyeToy: Play2
EyeToy: Play2 for the Playstation has an air guitar game.
And a drum game, and a boxing game, and a bunch of others. -
Re:Quality Repairs
BTW... Its not only Microsoft that has this problem. Tonight at Best-Buy I noticed at least 10 leaflets posted that report that the PS2-mini's powersuply can "overheat and melt, possibly causing a fire". The recalls on Sonys website:
http://www.us.playstation.com/Adaptor/
Also, it doesn't say anything about placement, like don't put them on carpet or in enclosed locations. Don't have the manual anymore for it to check since I tossed the books when it became a doorstop/paperweight.
Reading through the FAQ on Sony's website, they say it can take 2-4 *weeks* to get a replacement.
I wonder if the same company is involved in both? -
Re:Interesting article
Dell to a degree are lucky because their inventory is built from off the shelf components [...] but if you look at shortages of devices such as the Sony PSP, you find that there's a trade-off between time-to-market and component availability.
There's no shortage of PSPs. They may have sold out at launch, but they are in plentiful supply now. EBGames will ship you a PSP within 24 hours, Dell will ship you a handheld next working day. And you forget the similarity between the products. Compare the Dell Axim to the Sony's PSP:
Axim: 624 MHz to 416 MHz CPU (depending on the version)
PSP: 333 MHz CPU
Axim: 64MB RAM, 128MB to 256MB ROM
PSP: 32MB RAM
Axim: Compactflash (8GB+), SDIO storage slots
PSP: Memory Stick, 1.8GB UMD disk drive
Axim: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB 2.0
PSP: Wi-Fi, Infrared, USB 2.0
Axim v51: 480x640 screen with hardware 3D acceleration (mobile Direct3D).
PSP: 480x272 acreen with hardware 3D acceleration.
Axim: Touch-sensitive screen with stylus for input.
PSP: Joypad and a couple of buttons for input.
Axim: Windows Mobile 5, Microsoft Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, etc.
PSP: 0 to 3 software titles, depending on the bundle.
Axim: $269.00 to $621.00 depending on configuration and bundle.
PSP: $249.99 to $379.96 depending on the bundle.
From a standpoint of "the components that go into them", there's not much difference between the two besides the design of the case, buttons and ergonomics (although Sony's use of an optical drive is just insane). Dell Axims certainly should be capable of running any type of software that the PSP can (hence the Quake 3 port for the Axim v50/v51 which initially runs slowly but I'm sure will improve). -
Re:Finally!
Not just Sony music, Sony playstation has equally rediculous terms of use, if the internet rumour mill can be believed.
This Article, and others, suggest the playstation3 will be released infected with DRM as bad as the music media.
If the rumours are true, there will be no second hand sales of ps3 games, no playing your games at your friends home, no rentals from the video store, and consumers will be blessed with the pleasure of renewing of content licenses after a fixed number of hours of game play.
This article presents Sony's position nicely. -
Re:Why can't they go to jail?
Oh, thanks for telling me. I guess I'll just have to casually work it into my conversations, in the same way that the trolls put in Matrix spoilers when they post articles. You should help spread the word about the PS3 being infected with DRM too, though. : )

The NVidia GPU in the PS3That's not what Sony is saying:
SCEA press release:
TOKYO and SANTA CLARA, CA
DECEMBER 7, 2004
"Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) and NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA) today announced that the companies have been collaborating on bringing advanced graphics technology and computer entertainment technology to SCEI's highly anticipated next-generation computer entertainment system. Both companies are jointly developing a custom graphics processing unit (GPU) incorporating NVIDIA's next-generation GeForce(TM) and SCEI's system solutions for next-generation computer entertainment systems featuring the Cell* processor". -
Re:Keep up the pressure
It might not hurt to use a page from turd blossom's handbook. Say, start an outrageous rumor on the web, and let SONY present the other side of the debate.
I heard Sony might ship the PS3 infected with DRM that will only allow the games to be played a set number of times before the license expires. I for one will not be upgrading my PS2 to the PS3, the risk is too great. -
Re:daft...
Sony won't stop until every last machine is Infected with DRM
Sony music wants your machine infected with DRM
Sony corporate wants your machine infected with DRM
I won't buy a playstation because I'm afraid it will leave my stereo equipment Infected with DRM -

not to mention infected with flash

Also you are wrong on upcoming games.

Re:I already got mine
Apparently not, the Apple iPod Video edition has a 320x240 resolution.
The Sony PSP has a 480 x 272 resolution.
Clearly the Apple iPod not only has a smaller screen, but a lower resolution. These are the facts that you have denied. Why are you spreading lies and mistruths? Are you yet another Apple Zealot claiming that Apple technology is superior? Don't let the facts slow you down, apparently. -
Re:Why?

Re:Product life of Gameboy
The PS2 plays Playstation games, but it certainly didn't stop Sony from re-releasing original Playstation hardware in a new form factor after the release of the PS2.
http://www.us.playstation.com/consoles.aspx?id=1
If they can squeeze more money out of the old hardware by sticking it in a new form factor, there's no reason for them not to release a PSPOne after they come out with a PSP2.

buy one for your playstation2 NOW
new playstation controller ok, im just joking, but when i thought about it, the transition from this to nintendo's new controller isnt that big of a leap. combine this with the eyetoy and your almost there(minus the corded analog ).
once again, for tha fanboys, it was a joke, no need to mod me as troll about how they arent the same thing. it occured to me when i showed my girlfriend the new nintendo controller, and then reached for the playstation remote to turn on tekken5. -

no US replacementes?!
2 points:
1. my AC adapter failed 2 weeks ago so i bought a 3rd party unit (uhg, now it's wasted $30!)
2. the replacement page linked only covers europe, and my AC adapter *IS* covered... The US Playstation website still doesn't say anything, nor does the Consumer Alerts page... uhg!
*bonus point* - calling sony US support, they gave me this number: 1-888-780-7690 to deal with it. :)
*bonus bonus point* - calling that 888 number directed me to the Sony US page (linked above) several times - i'm probably just getting a cached version, or someone forgot to upload the most recent pages.... -

US Site / Send your old one in first?
Hmm... the US site doesn't seem to have anything about this on their main page. They do have a page http://www.us.playstation.com/Adaptor/ for american owners, but the page linked in the article is supposedly for all jursdictions, but I'd trust this one first. They also make you send your "defective" adapter in before you can get a new one. I wonder how many people will do that?

Catching up to Japan
Looks like gaming companies here are finally realizing that giving away limited edition swag in games will boost sales.
It's been working in japan for years.
Look at Skies of Arcadia for the dreamcast when it released in Japan.
You got a Leather strap with a logo from the game, a bandana that is an acctual item in the game, a cell phone strap, an art book, and some limited edition artwork as well.
Or look at Gran Turismo 4. You could buy a limited edition that came with a pair of Nike Sneakers! http://www.jp.playstation.com/game/granturismo/
