Re:digital running in our faculty building
It's a lot of fun to play with friends/coworkers in a game map based off of a real place you are familiar with. I regularly play on a couple maps I've made of my old high school and house in Counter-strike:source.
Some pics too in case anyone's interested.

Re:Not paying monthly fee ...
That's why he's proposing a voluntary scheme, not a mandatory one.
There are plenty of ways "technically voluntary" becomes "effectively compulsory". I can think of several off the top of my head, but the most obvious is: Record company offers some sort of incentive for ISP to sign up more customers to the scheme. ISP adds £1 to every customer's bill and sends an email explaining that you'll be paying the "voluntary RIAA Charge" unless you opt out. The opt-out process will be about as straightforward as cancelling AOL.
Either that or it'll be "voluntary" in the sense of "If you don't like it, you're free to take your business elsewhere".

Re:Bad SectorFor those who don't remember the Verizon Math issue, there's a hillarious (and also scary) display of ignorance where a poor blogger spent over 30 minutes on the phone with Verizon customer service trying to get them to admit that 0.002 Dollars is not the same as 0.002 Cents.
Recording can be had here:

at least they aren't using Verizon math
Does this make anyone else remember the
.002 cents debacle where Verizon insisted that .002 cents was equivalent to .002 dollars. See http://verizonmath.blogspot.com/ for the saga, or http://media.putfile.com/Verizon-Bad-Math for the original phone call recording. -

Looks like Andrea shouldn't have left her number..
In the unabridged version of the mp3, Andrea leaves her direct line in case George needs to contact her. Note, she did this after he told her that the recording would be posted.
I checked the number - it would appear many people have already left her kind words.

A longer version of the conversation (5 minutes longer) can be found here: http://media.putfile.com/Verizon-Bad-Math

Re:youtube
The original audio is on putfile: http://media.putfile.com/Verizon-Bad-Math
I believe the audio on PutFile is longer (27 minutes verse the YouTube's 22 minute version).
Also, Andrea (the call rep) leaves her contact information at the end. Maybe someone here can explain this simple concept to her? Her phone number is 1-888-581-1070 (Ext. 2234)
If you call the number currently it says "The mailbox for Andrea is full"... -
The software used
This is a timely article for me since Saturday evening on Battlefield 2 I ran upon an entire squad/clan of cheaters.
It was around 4am with no admins on the server, so they were being quite blatant about their cheating. I believe they were using the wallhacks and aimbots offered from MSXSecurity
Check out the videos:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-364914118 8840786715
Unfortunately, I must be honest, these hacks actually DO make cheating look kind of fun. Like you are a mutant with super-human powers.
I would like to see a team of cheaters going up against another team of cheaters though - that would be strange and pointless gameplay I would think. -

Do any of you really know what GM is?
I mean really, you all talk about glowing green, getting two tounges etc.
I caught my first episode of Penn & Teller's Bullshit the other night, and it just so happened to have a piece on GM food.
Some clips:
A short clip outline
The entire segment
It painted a pretty good argument FOR GM food... to feed the millions who are otherwise dying because it's hard to get crops to grow in their parts of the world.
Aren't the 'GM' crops really just an extension of grafting and selective breeding that has been going on for thousands of years?
Please enlighten me if I'm wrong, but in their piece they/those they interviewed stated that two of the things I thought were true about GM foods aren't:
* GM foods contain genes spliced from frogs/fish/other animals: Apparently bullshit
* GM foods don't require any testing/checks before being used: Also apparently bullshit, that they are more heavily regulated than any other food.
Is this true, or have Penn & Teller hoodwinked me? -
Re:I'm outraged!
You'd really be surprised by the amount of research and development done between Microsoft Research and Microsoft Design.
Just to give an example, there was a presentation at last year's Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles where the design team showed off all the concepts that they went through before they settled on the current Aero interface. From PDC 2003 to PDC 2005, they have gone through several ideas on how to improve the overall experience of the platform. As we all know, Longhorn was scrapped, but it's neat to look at what they came up with.
The presentation was called "The past 60 days in 50 seconds". I found the video of it on Putfile (direct link to WMV), and I found extracted images of the video on this site.

Re:You already have the answer.
If you really want to stick it to them, you might be able to get the local TV news to do a story on the practice (around here, Austin, TX, we have `[channel] 7 on your side' stories, where they go into detail about how somebody was being screwed and how the TV cameras made all the problems go away.
And since you're probably in BC this would mean talking to CTV's Consumer Reporter Olsen on your side and also CBC's Marketplace is doing a segment called Underdogs (note the "Calling all underdogs" contact info).
Bad publicity for Telus will be your best weapon and the quickest and cheapest route to a happy ending. Of course it might not hurt to record your phone conversation with the Telus reps.

Link to mp3 recording. Putfile's proper site for this requires a proprietary download just to run the file, so have this link instead. They'll probably move it though to make us look at their annoying page.
Rep: I don't know what anybody's done to you...
VF: You're annoying the shit out of me
Rep: Well that goes both waysHere's link to Vincent's blog. He's been dugg and farked and all the other usuals by now (which is why the file is now on putfile), so be gentle with the poor bastard's bandwidth. He's just come out of a very rough breakup, after all!
Also, this isn't a new tactic at all. That spin isn't in the linked article or anywhere else, so I guess 'Jhon' is to blame.
Opinions on this practice aren't as one-way as you might expect. It's kind of surprising to see a site called 'consumerist.com' reply to

Not a troll, a real question
While I've been trying to pry myself away from IE and meander over to Firefox, I've encountered a few bugs (quriks?) with FF in terms of how it handles fonts.
Is this because IE renders the page incorrectly? Firefox is on the left, IE is on the right. The only font settings I've changed has been increasing point size via the mouse wheel (on both browsers) 3-4 clicks. I would hate to have to change my display resolution just to make it look right (using a 19" CRT with 1280x1024).
IMO, IE just looks better to me, comparitively speaking. The way the font(s) are being displayed in FF makes for a terrible browsing experience to me - large text is extremely, overly large, while regular text is small & almost unreadable on my 1280x1024 screen (see screenshot).
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated, I figured you slashgeeks could help me, cause I'm stumped. No, this isn't a troll, it's a legitimate question. I'd love to be able to use Firefox, but I'd want the text to be displayed *exactly the same* as it is in IE, and it would be amazing. -
file size / compressopmg
Maybe not as big as a factor anymore, but filesize is and no compression are the 2 features I look for. Ability to edit online is fine and dandy, but I can already recompress, re-encode, and edit on my machine already. What I need is a service which will not decrease the quality after my upload to conserve bandwidth and allow a good max size, now that video quality is up to the HDTV era.
Google Video I believe doesn't have a max file size limit, but they do recompress your video to whatever codec they use.
Youtube (not sure about file size limit), but after re-enconding into FLV, the quality is pretty depressing.
I haven't tried the others listed on the site, but I currently use PutFile ( http://www.putfile.com/ ). They have a limit of 25MB for videos and no longer allows direct downoading, but they're decent and actually play back the original file. For larger files, most people probably won't want to view it in the browser anyway, so I upload to RapidShare ( http://www.rapidshare.de/ ) which allows a maximum of 100MB and unlimited downloads. Though for anyone that's used RapidShare, you know about the wait times. -
April Fools?
Is this an April Fools? I mean the 25 sec clip could easily mean last week's opening sequence where they had British actors perform the opening sequence to Simpsons and somehow BBC took the bait? or maybe we're taking the bait...
You can watch the clip here (though the clip is ~1 min long; not the 25secs they mentioned):

Re:Slow news day?I've also seen a bunch of dumbass articles every time I've visited digg.. here's a prime example: RAINBOW SIX XBOX 360 SCREENSHOT OMG! That's the story. A screenshot of an Xbox 360 game.
This has the most "diggs" of anything on the main page, which is just damn sad. People come to Slashdot for the discussion; I have yet to find another tech website with a better intelligence to stupidity ratio.
And digg stories are frequently just taken from Slashdot as well, sometimes one site has a story before the other, but it's not like it's more than a day's difference.

in short the article was written by fps doug
here are some cliffs for those who don't want to read it all.
1. the author plays alot of street fighter and probably alot of fps games
2. the author is angry that his mad mousing skills can't help him in a rpg
3. the author doesn't understand how rpg's work
4. the author wants a rpg that is really a fps
5. the author apparently wants the ability to pull out a noob cannon and scream "boom headshot"
6. the author hasn't listened to all those l2p tells
7. the author doesn't play well with others
further more, and to steal a quote from maddox, if you're too much of an impressionable idiot to play World of Warcraft, don't. WoW isn't teaching any lessons, it's a game and it has certain rules that the player agrees to play by. -
The trade-off
On the other hand. if you instead of spending your time playing VG's you spend it studying, working, reading an educational book, socializing with fun or interesing people, the benefits would far surpass the whatever skills these ppl claim you acquire.

Good point. To be more specific, the two best beer commercials (from my point of view and others I know of) that I have seen was the one at the last superbowl with the soldiers walking down the Airport Terminal and people start to clap and one more recently with this guys house that had his Christmass lights timed to "Wizards of Winter" (among other songs). Here's a link to a site that has a copy of the lights (mind you, this was out before the commercial) http://media.putfile.com/WizardsofWinter-SM -
