Re:Yeah, the electoral system is messed up.
Why shouldn't we have a popular vote? Because it disadvantages the small states? That's crap - they already have disproportionate numbers in Congress, why should they have an advantage in the presidential election as well?
Do they? Only in the Senate, not in the House. Besides, how often does a bill come to the Senate without passing through the President's hand first? Never. The president represents the federal government.
Also remember things like appointing Federal Judges is by far one of the most important thing the President does. Why is this important to individual states? Because that would almost effectively undermine any minority state's Supreme Court. I don't think it's a perfect system at all... However it works. The loser's will always whine about how a change is needed, however it's not applicable during this election.
Who cares anyways though, eventually it will not matter. The streets will flow with blood from all the non-believers. -
Re:And the news here is?Nothing, except perhaps to the person who submitted the story. I'll admit the names are solid (I particularly like Evan Dorkin's Milk & Cheese, something I'm sure I'm not alone in) but you're right that marrying videogames and comics is nothing new. For example, Scott Kurtz (of PVP Online fame) will have a comic included in the upcoming City of Heroes reissue, and the boys at Penny Arcade have done several online comics for video games (most notably, for Ubisoft.
Personally, I'll always have a soft spot for Atari Force.

Re:Any ideas on security
I only keep a few important documents on my flash drive. Since I have to move between Windows and Linux (and occasionally Macs...) I have multiple binaries of GnuPG on the drive.
Ideally, you want some way to write directly into the encrypted file. I'm not aware of anything to do that myself...yet. Only started looking.
For now I just encrypt and decrypt a zip file (gpg -c --cipher-algo AES256 file.zip). The obvious flaw here is that yes...you can use an undelete program to retrieve the unencrypted zip file off the drive (I've successfully done so.)
My goal was to generally make the drive un interesting to someone who finds it. Unless they have some knowledge of how things work, they're either going to open up the text file with my contact info or wipe the drive clean because double clicking on these .gpg files doesn't do anything...
What I'd like to do is throw an encrypted file system image on the thing. That way only a previous version of the encrypted file system image could be recovered. Until I find something cross platform that doesn't require software to be installed on the host computer, that just isn't an option though. My advise is just don't put anything on it that you don't want someone else to see. Or get a piercing and attach your flash drive by a chain. Maybe you'll start an Office Punk trend... -
Re:What puzzles me
If I understand the question properly, then in answer I'd point to places like Homestar Runner, PvP, Penny-Arcade, etc. all of which grew up on free distribution of their art and have become well known both on and off the Internet. If you think they're not cultural icons, I'd offer Homestar Runner's 'Trogdor' character showing up in the Final Episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or the infamous Cardboard Tube of Penny Arcade appearing in Legacy of Kain 3.
Or do they not count for some reason? :) -

When I read the summary, I thought of Scott Kurtz of PVP fame. Instinctively, instead of RTA, I went to his website and saw:
"Home again

We're back! KC was a blast. The wife and I had a great time....
I was like, wtf! When did his wife die? Yesterday?
Gotta at least open one link in the summary. -
What like this ?The Mootrix
Can't find it but PETA (I think) did a Mootrix take off as well as a video, was pretty funny on "farm raised" animals stuck in the Mootrix

Re:Probability. From what I've gathered so far about the film, the only thing any Hollywood schmucks have to do with the actual filmmaking (aside from any special effects), would be with distributing it and promoting it in the USA. I've got faith that the film won't suck.
However if it does suck, we may see the nerd riots after all, except they'll be in 2005-6 instead of 2004.

Re:Firefly wasn't watched
if it were popular Fox would have kept it.
Fox made damn sure it couldn't have the chance to become popular.
They aired it at a random timeslot, not everyweek, and not at the time they said the night before that it would air.
Some episodes played on fridays at 8, one played at 12:05 AM, another around 12:20 AM, they played out of order...
I think Fox wanted Joss to make another teen-hit, but in space. And when he showed up with the best sci-fi show ever shown on TV, the execs freaked because that was not what they wanted. They didn't want innovative, or smart, they wanted bland and dumb, like them.
The show wasn't watched, but not because it wasn't good, only because it was sabotaged by its cruel Fox masters. -
Re:Am I missing something?"Unless they are talking Garfield like comics, small square panels all the same size, how the hell is it going to fit?"
They should publish PVP.

Whew
Guess we won't have to witness the Nerd Riots after all. And I had my D20 prepared and everything.
Never had more fun watching the Oscars. That said, by the end, I almost felt sad that so many other films weren't winning. Oh well, I'm sure it was an honor just to be nominated. -

Can't decide on FloodRanger or this game for my next purchase.

Re:Matrix and snobishness
I'm one of those 50%, actually. Only, when I say people didn't "get" A.I., I'm not insinuating a lack of intelligence of their part...I just think not everyone understands things the way other people do. For instance, I don't get most modern art...I think a lot of it is garbage. There are people who honestly do understand it though (there are also people who fake an understanding, but yeah...offtopic).
For me, the first Matrix was a kind of religious experience. I think for the second one, people were anticipating the same mindfuck. I figured it wouldn't make as much of an impression, but I was still excited to see it. After reading all the miserable reviews that came in, I seriously wondered if they saw the same movie I did. I loved it on many levels...not as much as the first one, but close. And to those people who trash the rave scene...come on, wouldn't you be partying if it was possibly one of your last days alive? Hell, I'd be out running around naked in Times Square. But I digress...
It's obvious that people like Scott Kurtz (oh god...don't get me started on his lousy review) did not interpret the movie the same way I did. As for the third one...I have my ticket for Friday and I'm anxious to see it. So far I have abstained from reading any reviews or editorials, as to keep my mind free of any prejudice. -
Sounds familiar ....
... like I've heard that one before...

Comics that are better than UF
... because, honestly, there aren't that many goood cartoons out there, maybe a handful, and Illiad is still in the top 10 tech comics, IMHO.I used to think User Friendly was pretty good, but then either it's quality deteriorated, or i found other, better comics to put it in perspective.
Here's a list of (some of) the comics that in my opinion are better than User Friendly. As usual, your opinion may differ and your mileage may vary.
Adventurers! the best of the CRPG comics.
Dragon Tails comic about strange geeky dragons and a squirrel or two. (Has jokes that cover all kinds of geekery, not just the tech variety) The Wings of ChangeFantasy comic about a dragon, a girl with wings, and a group of pixie children
The Devil's Panties "Real Life" type comic about a female protagonist and a couple of her friends. Frequently touches on goth and comic geekdom, and there's a side comic about LARPs.
Sparkling Generation Valkyrie YuukiA manga style take-off on the "pretty-girl" anime genre. Has some Ranma-esque gender-bending themes if that disturbs you.
Freefall Science fiction comic, primarily focused on an kleptomaniac alien scavenger, a friendly but somewhat dim robot, and a genetically engineered anthropomorphic female wolf.
Ozy and Millie One of those comics with a world (mostly) like ours but filled with anthropomorphic animals. Frequently philisophical or political.
Something Positive "Real life" type comic with a very twisted and sometimes sick sense of humor.
Venus Envy A comic about highschool aged MtF transgendered person dealing with all the issues you'd expect such a person to be dealing with. Obviously lots of gender-bending issues.
8-bit Theater tied for second best CRPG comic.
RPG World the other tied for second best CRPG comic.
Anti-here for Hire by the author of Adventurers! Same style mostly, but with a comic-book superhero theme.
Megatokyo some people love the comic, some people can't stand it. The art is certainly pretty though in either case.
Penny Arcade people talk about it enough on Slashdot (including several mentions in this thread) that i'm not going to even bother describing it.Okay, I'm tired of making descriptions, so some other good comics that didn't make it into the top tier (but still better than User Friendly IMHO) if you feel like looking around, PvP, Ctrl-Alt-Del, Saturnalia. The Life of Riley, No Need for Bushido
And last (just because everyone here has probably heard of it already) Sluggy, which has had its unfunny moments, but unlike User Friendly has managed to pull out of those slumps and return to its former heights every time (so far)
There's also a large set of comics that i only check every couple of weeks because they don't updated more than once a week, but are still worth taking the time to check. However i'm going to just stick to my daily list at the moment.

Working on it as we speak: PvP
Frosty!! -
Some good webcomics
8-bit Theater. Remember Fighter, Thief, Red Mage, and Black Mage from Final Fantasy? Well, they're the main characters in this strip. Archives go back a year or two. Rather entertaining.
d+pad covers the goings-on at a video game store. The artwork is pretty crude, but if you're into the gaming world at all, you'll enjoy it.
Goats is a VERY disturbing strip. The early artwork was a lot less refined than it is now, but how can you go wrong with a strip that involves overclocked lemons and a Satanic chicken named Diablo?
PvP is a strip about a fictional gaming magazine. Sometimes crass and goofy, but often hilarious (go to any geek gathering and see how many people laugh when you shout "Panda attack!"). I know I'd subscribe to any magazine that had a 300-year-old blue troll as an intern.
And, of course, Sluggy Freelance. Best. Webcomic. Ever. But you really have to go all the way back to the beginning of the archives. There's years of great stuff in there. (Worship Bun-bun!)
I know that no day is complete without reading all my webcomics... which is really easy using bookmarked tabs in Mozilla. I just click on one bookmark, and the browser opens up a dozen separate tabs with all my comics loaded. -
Re:Some Fun Game Related Comics
I think you are also missing PVP, which recently has made the jump to print comics, but maintains a daily strip online as well. This is a success story as to how the online medium can make the transition with a large enough fan base as well as a consistently amusing scenario and characters,
