Sounds like this - https://www.sharperimage.com/s...
I've had a few of their air purifiers for a couple of decades now. Just replaced them with new ones this year. Wonder how much a big mother city model costs. -
Congratulations MIT
You just reinvented the CoolWare Personal Cooling System.
-
Re:What about the humidity?
If these were for "personal comfort" in a work environment then humidity is a big factor to comfort.
Not to mention this is NOT A NEW IDEA. Of course MIT has a habit of reinventing shit and claiming it as their own discovery.

You mean this?

I have something like that.
I bought a portable mini-cycle from Sharper Image awhile back ( http://www.sharperimage.com/us/en/catalog/product/sku__LI112 in case anyone's interested). I put it under my desk and began pedaling. The first problem was hitting my knees. So I moved back a bit and raised my desk up on two wood boards. This worked, but the force of pushing on the pedals kept pushing my wheeled chair back. I wasn't willing to give up the comfortable chair, so I just figured out how to push without pushing myself back. Now I don't use it every day, but when I'm deep in work and feel the need to move my legs around, I can pedal in place while coding. And considering that I didn't pay much for it (it was on sale and I also used a Discover Card cashback bonus to lower the price), it was worth it.

Re:Polluting?Wouldn't heating oxygen and nitrogen in air with lasers to the point of making glowing plasma also create ozone and nitric oxides? This sounds like it would be the same as having dozens of electric arcs going off in mid air. Boy that almost sounds as bad as generating ions just for dubious air purification purposes. Or using nitrogen oxide as a aerosol propellant or packing gas.
Really, crying wolf every time someone invents something hurts the cause of environmentalism. -

Re:Attempting real discussion...I saw a commercial for this just yesterday. I'm inclined to be skeptical of anything from The Sharper Image, but there may be some value to this. I've noticed when I get really hot on a bike ride, a small amount of cool water on the back of my neck does wonders for my whole body.
But that thing looks really uncomfortable to wear, I have to say. Even in the commercial, which was no doubt shot to make the device look as good as possible, it looks annoying, not to say dorky. (Okay, dorky.) I think I'll pass.

Attempting real discussion...
In the hopes of salvaging this discussion (TFA is a non-story)
Has anyone tried one of these? The priciples behind it make sense:

And since hearing about this development:
http://www.stanfordalumni.org/news/magazine/2005/j ulaug/features/cool.html
It makes even more sense, though a neck-worn device is more practical for mobile usage. -

Ionic breeze?
Did anyone else think Sharper Image Ionic breeze when they saw the cooling device in the article?

"Hummer" flashlightThe Hummer branding of it may be a bit cheesy, but the Hummer Shake Flashlight that you can get at Sharper Image works great. 20 years ago my mom got a flashlight which ran with a squeeze grip geared into a toy motor. Last year we got a couple of these and it is so much better.
First of all, it's a linear generator, so each time the weight inside crosses the center it makes power; second, it uses an LED which is much lower power than old incandescent bulbs; and third, it has a supercapacitor which can power the LED for a few minutes with 30 seconds of shaking. Just be sure to shake it horizontally, as the instructions warn that you might break it if the weight hits an end too hard on a vertical downstroke.
The best part is you never have to worry about the batteries running down or leaking when you don't use it, and you never have to avoid using regularly for fear of running the batteries down. It has a power switch, so you can shake it up and use it as needed, then just shake it again when it runs down.
Slashdot readers would be recommended to get the "red" model, as that is translucent and you can see the guts of it operating, for higher geek value.

Ionic rings
Build an Ionic Flow ring in a straight line going up the mountain range from ground level, pointing towards the west. Each of the gigantic rings strips electrons from the wind that pass through the ring, storing it in an internal capacitor (the power generation is caused by wind passing over the coils around the ring.
So what we do is buy a ton of these Professional Series Ionic Breeze Quadra Silent Air Purifiers, now with OzoneGuard! You get a 50% discount for buying two, I wonder what the discount would be on 1000? I have no idea how many it would take to build this ring you are talking about, but its certainly something to think about.
Don't forget, with each purchase, you get a free Ionic Breeze® Air Freshener 2.0!

Pity
It is a pity that the average consumer still believes that a computer is like any other home appliance - it should last, unattended and with little regular maintenance, for years upon years. Computers are not like refrigerators or microwaves or dishwashers - they are a category of their own. They
/do/ require regular upkeep via software and regular cleaning of the hardware. Unless you've got a case that has an Ionic Breeze built into it (I challenge thee, O gladiators of Slashdot), your computer gets dusty.
It won't be until computers are in the $100 price range that the average consumer thinks of them the way a lot of enthusiasts do: a tool with perqs.
Until that time, people like us can make money as Mr. Fix-its and computational handymen.
Then there is the other commonly heard phrase: "Well, you fixed it a week ago and it's broke again." To which I normally respond (at least to the people I call friends): "Have you used it since I fixed it?"
Computers don't break themselves. Users break computers. -

Solar Powered Torches and a light for the garden -
As a disabled person myself
I would like to have some of the auto-cleaning robots, like the roomba
and the Robomaid
to help me out around the house. It's almost impossible for me to do housework. Having a large dog makes housework even harder, what with the hair problem. I can not sweep, vacuum, mop, etc..
I think they should classify these devices as assistance devices for disabled/handicapped people because I can't afford them as I'm sure many other disabled/handicapped are on very tight budgets like myself. It would be nice to get them covered like scooters and wheelchairs are..
I won't be holding my breath though..

Sharper Image - Ionic Breeze should do the trick
If you really want to keep this stinky computer going, try putting a Sharper Image ionic breeze unit behind the blower fans. Also, make sure all the front fans are sucking air and the rear fans are blowing air out that back over the ionic breeze. I assume you can disinfect the outside with febreeze or some other agent that breaks down organics, but you aren't going to get the stench out of the inside very easily.
Or if it's still under warranty, try to RMA some of the big pieces like the powersupply and motherboard :) -
Cheap Air Filter
After watching those commercials for that Ionic Breeze air filter, I got to thinking it wouldn't be too hard to make my own air filter using fans from old power supplies and cases. One applebox, 8 fans, 1 power supply and a carefully cut piece of fabric later and I had a pretty decent air filter. Just cut holes for the fans in the box, connect them to power supply, and stretch fabric over open top of box. Works like a charm.
-
Barring cost... why not just use the same...
Barring cost, why not use the same technique as those filterless air purifiers. They produce directional air flow, which I have always assumed the velocity of the air was a function of the amount of electricity used in the system.

Re:Not for PCs
Specifically, check out the Ionic Breeze air cleaners from The Sharper Image. I don't know exactly how they do it, but I have seen them pushing air with no moving parts.

worst hoax EVER!
this, however, is real.

Consarnit.
I was going to buy a couple of those Bathroom Ionic Breezes, take them apart, and place them throughout my computer case and then boast the first "Ionic Cooled" case. I seriously think there's a market for them in PC cooling. They don't throughput much air, and they need constant cleaning, but they are absolutly silent, no moving parts, and low on energy. Not to mention that they clean the air of dust particles and whatnot, helping to keep your computer, and work environment clean. SharperImage should come out with a PC Case.

Re:Countermeasures
Well how about just some way I can find my keys and television remote control.. That alone would make this technology the best thing since sliced silicon.
Here you go. -
Re:Caught in a Catch .22Furthermore, the cost of the 3d tech has to be more than "the low hundreds of dollars," which we will peg at $300. I just priced an Alienware laptop which has:
--1024MB of RAM vs. 512MB
--Mobility Radeon 9600 128MB vs. GeForce4 440 Go (64MB?), the mobile version of the MX cards
--8MB cache 60 GB 7200 RPM Hitachi vs. standard generic 60GB drive
--4x2x8x DVD-RW vs. DVD-RAM drive
--16.1" 1600x1200 UXGA vs. 15" 1024x768 XGA ...and it was still about $125 less!!!So either the tech costs a lot more than they're willing to admit, or they're hiking the price because people will pay for the gimmick. I think Sharp has confused themselves with The Sharper Image.

Media Containers...
Well, if they are CDs you don't really care about, you can store them on a CD spindle. Otherwise, the old 5 1/4" floppy containers work fairly well.
You can also get some fairly nifty CD storage racks, like This one.
Oh, wait... You were talking about... Never mind.

Solution looking for a problem
I think that the Segway has some interesting technology, but I also think that it is still "a solution looking for a problem". For the same weight in batteries, a simple foldable inline scooter could go much further at lower cost. The extra energy expenditure for balance gyros
/motors is simply not needed to move ordinary people around on level surfaces... -
How about an ionic airflow system?
Interesting. A friend-of-a-friend is a distributor of ionizing air cleaners. You've probably seen ads of Sharper Image's Quadra Breeze products.
These generate a pretty decent airflow with ionic (electrostatic) propulsion. No idea, however, about the many claims of cleaning the air, improving one's health, killing germs, et cetra, et cetra, et cetra.
I have one (received as a gift from the friend-of-friend) in my house. If I leave the bedroom door/windows closed during the day, I can definitely smell the "ozone" when I get back home at night. -
Re:BIological Systems - Scares me!
Who says 'self-aware networks' are even possible? I've seen no evidence to show that they are.
A network that knows its own configuration, is able to introspect on the status of its nodes, and has the power to make changes to its routing and component members is "self aware" and "self mutable". It is also well within our technological capacity to build one. The abilities to introspect and self-modify are the core of intelligence. Read Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid. An intelligent machine is most likely impossible using a digital computer.
If anything requires evidence to prove, it's that silly statement right there. It's not even clear what you mean by an "intelligent machine". But even taking it to a deep level of complexity (human-level intelligence), it's likely that we'll be there soon as the ability to simulate the right number of neurons is made possible by faster processors. Read The Age of Spiritual Machines.I just think its funny people still worry about this when the smartest machine we've ever built is a robot vacuum.
Apparently The Sharper Image catalog and your local Brookstone dictate your knowledge of technology and human achievement. That being the case, I must inform you that some of the newest meat thermometers are quite sophistaced and even have an "ultra-sensitive 'fish' option". -
Re:They need something to 'push' against
But if it requires an atmosphere, then it's not "antigravity"... and that's what it's claimed to be. People like to toss around the term "antigravity" because it seems to discredit established research.
Kinda like "alternative medicine" - First they say your regular doctor doesn't know as much as they do and conventional medicine is a failure. Then they claim their products are 'clinically tested' and 'scientifically proven' to work.
Besides, there are other problems with this device. The lift power they generate is relatively low for their size. They also use the same principle of operation as the ionic breeze(tm) air cleaner thingy (not an endorsement, just an example). Here's a link to the US patent for anyone that wants a better look at how it works. (Gee, does that mean this "invention" is already patented? If it was "invented" in the 1920's, is that prior art?)
I wonder if these "lifters" are prone to "fouling", since they do work on the same principle as those air filters :)

Sharper Image Silent Air PurifierI don't work for the company, but I plan on buying one in the next two weeks. Ionic Breeze Quadra Silent Air Purifier has a ton of features that I think will be beneficial to computers as well as people. The thing only consumes 10 Watts! It's completely silent, and it doesn't use disposable air filters. It only uses stainless steel metal plates to filter the air. I suffer from allergies, and I think both my computer and my sinuses will thank me once I have this baby running in my appartment.
I think that an office could definitely benefit from one of these babies! You should see what it does with cigarette smoke! Gone in a flash!

Sharper Image Ionic Breeze
I can only echo what I've already read in this thread. You don't specify the size of the room you need to cleanse, and you don't specify if you have any special requirements (allergies demanding HEPA or smokers, or both).
The Sharpter Image Ionic Breeze has been a godsend in my household since 1999.
I bought it because my girlfriend's HEPA filter sounded like a vacuum cleaner 24/7 and I had trouble sleeping with it... for 2 years. When I moved out of the college housing to get a real job, I got one of these that was advertised as "silent" in the hopes that when she followed me 3 months later, she'd not need the HEPA beast. I don't know how close the Ionic Breeze gets to HEPA, but it's close enough for her. After almost 4 years of service, the first one gave up the ghost. I think it was my fault, putting the blades back wet always made crackling noises and bad smells, but I was lazy and water improved the cleaning process. Screw the fact that I had a masters in EE and knew better. Over the 4 years, it paid for itself in the costs of replacement HEPA filters for her original one. Okay, maybe that's a lie... I can no longer find filters for it. But, if they were still available, the original $199 purchase would have been paid back. Anyway, it stopped moving air after all this time and I went to take it apart and broke one of those tiny wires that makes the whole thing work.
Prices have gone up a bit. I just bought my second (and third, they are running a promotion where the second one is 50% off). They have two sizes (smaller than first). I don't honestly know how they work, but it seems like they negatively charge the air with tiny wires and then the air gets sucked to the positively charged metal blades where it leaves off all the bad stuff. It's not silent, but if you have even the slightest background noise, or are more than 3-5 feet away, you'll not hear it.
If your lab is the victim of smokers, no filter in your pricerange will prolong your computers' supplies. Regardless, if it's a problem, taking the computers apart every 6 months to vacuum can cause only 20-30 minutes of downtime apiece and only costs what you put in vacuum electricity.
If anybody cares, and has read this far, aforementioned girlfriend became wife in 2000 and shortly will receive the title "Mom". Not that I'm prouder than hell about it or anything.

Electrostatic Air FiltrationI would think that a form of electrostatic air filtration would do the best job. Sharper Image has two or three (here, or here) would be the kind of thing your after. There are different sizes, etc, but this is probably the best thing you can get. On top of this, you might want to invest in some of those fan filter covers for computer fans that are made of fabric or whatever to keep dust out. There are some here, here, and here. I would think that the combination of these things would keep you pretty low on dust. That said, make sure to clean the air purifier and check the fan filters every once in a while to make sure they're clear or else thing might end up worse than before. Once the room is clean (after the first week or whatever) and you've cleaned everything out, I'd imagine that you'd wouldn't have to check the fan filters much at all (maybe only when working on that specific PC) as long as you keep the electrostatic air filter going on clean.
Also, see if you can talk to whoever in incharge of the heating/AC system in the building to see if there is anything they can do. Maybe Allergy Free has a filter that would work with the system or maybe you could get together the with the other groups of people in the building and buy an electrostatic air filtration system for the whole building. They work great on both dust and allergies. These are just wild ideas from brainstorming, they really aren't that realistic I guess. The first paragraph though will probably work well.
PS: We have electrostatic air filters installed in our house. We also had them installed in the house we had before this one. Our family has allergy problems and when we clean them, you'd be amazed the colors the water turns from what comes off them. They really do catch alot.
PPS: Or you could just watercool everything and run it all through one massive radiator. But this would be a bit more than $500. More pipedreaming.

Re:how much noise does it make?
Yes, I leave it on all the time. I used to use an air cleaner much like this one. With it on, it sounded something like a box fan set at a medium speed.
It used about 200watts of electricity, and I ended up changing the filter every month or so, at a cost of 30-45$ to me. It worked great, but it was somewhat expensive in the maint. department.
I kept seeing ads on TV about the SharperImage Ionic Breeze. I get their catalog, and in one was a testimonial from a user who had one running when the attack on the World Trade Center happened.
He said that when he came back, he had the EPA guys come in and check the air in his apartment (about a block from the WTC) and it was a lot cleaner then the surrounding air in the city, almost pure!
So I said, hell, I'll give it a shot and plunked down the 350$ for it - and love it.
It cleans just as well as my old one (maybe even better) and instead of a filter to change and a prefilter to wash every month or so, I simple pull out a 'collection grate' and wipe it off. Wait for it to dry, plug it back in, and I'm good to go - 5 minutes or so, and at the cost of around 0.05 cents in water. Plus, it only uses 15watts of power and is silent. SO I keep the big one in the living room on low and leave the ionic breeze in the office.
As for dust, I've had very little accumalation now. Used to need to clean the TV every month or so with a pretty thick layer of dust; now I can wait 6 months and there isn't much dust at all on anything, so I would safely assume it cuts down on that as well hehe. -

Please read again
1) Negative ion generators != ozone generators. Read. Learn.
You read. If the Sharper Image products didn't generate ozone, why do they all come with information & warnings about ozone??
"About the Ionic Breeze® and Ozone limits (top)
The Ionic Breeze® complies with US safety standards for low ozone emission (less than 50 parts per billion). We recommend that individuals with a history of respiratory disease consult with their doctor about possible heightened sensitivity to very low ozone."
2) A review that indicates that one model/brand of air-purifier doesn't work does not imply that ALL air purifiers do not work. Read. Learn.
You provide nothing to read. What brand of negative-ion type air purifier does work, and has been verified by a third party?
I've been using things that claim to use ions to clean the air since I was a kid, and when the ion generator is on, I get a sore throat. I haven't tested them all yet, but I have had this experience with 10 different models. -
Re:Smog?
IIRC, it wouldn't add up- it would break down. Ozone is not the stablest form of oxygen, after all. If quantities are small enough it will combine with other materials in the air or break down to O2+O. I've got a "Ionic Breeze" air purifier from Sharper Image, and it manifests this behavior- if the quantity of ozone it's put out into an area is small, the ozone doesn't build up and you can have it running indefinitely without any trouble even if you don't have much air circulation. If you have it putting out a fair bit for a while, though, it gets to the point where it's created an environment in which the ozone concentration is high enough that it doesn't break down. Then it gets quite smelly really quickly.

Re:Personal watercraft
> I wonder how small an effective boiler can be made.
This might be an indication. -
potential patent flawIf the patent calls for a change in the "ornamental or decroative appearance of a device," but then goes back to claim this could provide feedback to the user about the internal state of the device, doesn't that preclude the display from being decorative? Isn't it then, simply, an additional display device inside of a case?
I know, there are millions of examples of prior art that all are microprocessor controlled utilizing storage (write once only, but it is storage) and decorative lights projected through a surface. But at what point do we draw the line between decorative and functional?
