Re:Just stupid
If I'm ever involved in this sort of thing, I will insist that the sign is configured as a secondary display.
Aside from looking better when things go wrong (since dialogs usually appear on the primary screen), it also gives you a local display that can be used for a settings window or something. Given the cost of these things, one more monitor is not going to break the bank. -

Re:iPod was a side project
Um, NO. It was a standard firewire connector on both ends. http://media.techeblog.com/elephant//ul/23125-450x-r_5.jpg [techeblog.com] I know, because I owned one. And, at first the filesystem was NOT obfuscated, to boot. the filenames were merely truncated, not turned into random four-letter filenames like it did later on.
So you mean they added the proprietary connector and obfuscated filesystem as a value-added feature later on?
I see...

Gnome: iPhone Edition
The GNOME 3 UI looks very similar to the Android 3 UI. Maybe the GNOME team is trying to "bridge the gap" and bring a smart phone style user interface to the general purpose PC market. Unfortunately, this strategy will most likely fail due to the differences in input method. The PC keyboard+mouse system is vastly different than a smart phone multitouch screen system.

Love the droid
Best OS: Android IMHO it is more sophisticated than it's competitors. Before you mod me down iPhone fan bois, Android has brought genuine multitasking to the smartphone platform amongst other things. Oh and the aftermarket firmware and themeing community is thriving. It's not great, but it's the newest thing thats making alot of hackers, tweakers and gadget addicts learn to love again. Hopefully an official Google phone will re-center the AOSP and do more than keep the project alive, but really ramp things up.
Worst OS: Solaris without a doubt. In my own experience it doesn't perform like linux does now, ZFS is cool but just confuses me and the userland is the most horrible thing ever.

Re:Purchase On Impulse?
It will be implemented badly. They've already stated it will only do gross motions and have limited resolution. It's the 2d camera version of the Sega Activator.
While a lot of people like flailing about, I rather prefer to be a tool and play from the couch.
Finger/hand tracking would be awesome. Limb tracking, not so much.

Playing to Apple's weakness
Nokia's "open" strategy will pay off big time in the long run. At the moment, their major threat is the iPhone, which inherits all of apple's strengths (RDF, UI design) as well as it's weaknesses (software/hardware lockdown).
The next-gen Nokia phone on the other hand (successor to the N900) will get all the hardware features of the iPhone, but with the openness of a linux software stack. Want to make an app that downloads podcasts? Fine! Want to use your phone as a modem? No problem! In fact, no corporation enforcing their moral or business rules on how you use your phone, or alienation of talented developers!
Maemo and Qt being open source will ensure that the software features of the Maemo platform quickly eclipse those of the artificially limited iPhone platform. Maemo's based on Debian - so Nokia automatically gets just about every open-source software package in existence available on their platform.
I think this is the most serious threat that the turtleneck sweater brigade have yet seen. -

It may not be a nuke, but there's a gameboy in Nintendo's NYC store that survived a barracks bombing (no clue as to which side's barracks it was, though.) It's on display there, still playing Tetris to this day.

Re:The art of electronics
Yeah, like Pierre Scerri, who spent 15 years making a scale model of a Ferrari 312. Not only did he make the body, he learned to make glass in order to create the headlights, and learned to make rubber to make his own tires. It's almost unbelievable.

IS Geek Squad Really Up Sell Squad?
From my understanding, most of the problems that Geek Squad resolves can be solved by selling the consumer MORE stuff. e.g. (New Computer, Memory, Harddrive, Software). Geek Squad was probably a good concept when it started, but it appears economic pressures have pushed Best Buy into the GREED ZONE. If only Walmart wouldn't have started selling those nice new high-margin LCD panels at cut-throat prices.
Oddly, I quit shopping at Best Buy for two reasons, 1) Lack of Product Knowledge in Salespeople, 2) The Loss Prevention Guy that stands at the door and makes you feel like a criminal when you enter and exit. -
Re:Thats a pretty stupid mystery appBut just imagine, it wasnt made by Apple - say it was a Motorola, or Erikson, or billy magoo. It's the exact same design, exact same features, exact same software. Would we be talking about it right now?
Obviously not/not the same exact software, design, and features...but closer than anything else.

Re:True, but the corporations still win...
It's as if these companies and corporations don't have proper protocols or procedures for cancellation.
Not really. The whole point of the article (and much of the comments here) is that these systems have been specifically designed to make the cancellation difficult. AOL are particularly bad; there was a case in the media (and here on
/.) where a subscriber recorded the bullshit he went through trying to cancel. Most of the time it's completely artificial hurdles that they put in place to keep the customer. -
Say what?
I can't do most modifications that I think would be fun, and still legally drive on the freeway, and I can't even put it up on blocks in most neighborhoods that I'd want to live in.
... what modifications do you want to do? Install a turbine?
What is your problem with "putting it up on blocks?"
a) You would need to do this why?
b) Who is going to stop you? If a neighborhood committee or something thinks it's an eyesore, well, there's a reason God made garages and backyards. -

Re:ea: please remake duck hunt
There is no moderation option for "contains a serious factual error," so I'll reply. EA had absolutely nothing to do with Duck Hunt; Duck Hunt was made by Nintendo for the NES and came as a pack-in title for systems with the light gun. And you may very well get your wish, since Nintendo was demonstrating a new Duck Hunt title at E3, along with gun-grip attachment to the Wii remote: http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-gadget/fi
r st-look-duck-hunt-wii -
Cut my chest open and throw my liver to the dogs.
and the PS3 devkit is something like $16 million.
Who modded that up? I can barely break +1 on the moderation scale, and someone modded that up without confirming facts.
There are available pictures of the PS3 development kit on HOME.BTCONNECT.COM. There is an article with a strategic view of the PS3 development kit on WWW.TECHEBLOG.COM. Yet, there has been no price shown. For under USD 2000, one could just buy some Dell PC's and cluster them for a better solution to anything Sony could pull out of its proprietary mind. Why stop at USD 16000000? I say the development kit could be as much as Sony is worth. I'm impressed Sony is advertising PS3 as a Linux solution bending to an 100% open-source environment, yet at the same time BOUGHT its solution from Microsoft--nope, not surprised. If I'm uptodate on my studies in gray-area politics and economics, two competitors can build their products for eachothers benefit to prevent use of their IP (think Blu-Ray) while competing like dogs in a market.
For conclusion to the matter above; The PS3 Development kit WIKIPEDIA article yiels that Sony purchased technology from Microsoft that would provide access to GNU development tools on the Playstation 3! (I kid you naught!) And within that article, the Playstation 3 is not limited to a game console but a complete multimedia entertainment center -- this would propose it not to be a shabby little game device like the competing Nintendo Wiivolution and Microsoft XBOX.
The sad truth is, that I and many others may only buy a controller of a certain gaming system, and just theme the desktop chassis of our computer and theme the visual presentation through an X or DirectFB solution to "have it better than the real thing" while we run an emulator.
Sony and Microsoft have been turds since they ever started competing, no exceptions. Nintendo appears to be an honest venture, having evinced to not choose any intellectual properties that conflict with their customers' and stockholders' interests and securities.
Anyone asking me for a suggestion; I recommend they choose the lesser of two Wiivels... -

No need to read the article this time
"Skadet of Slashdot made great use of a boring Monday morning by transforming an ordinary blurb on Techeblog into a front-page Slashdot article. He even hacked it to include hyperlinks, with a special add-on link to display the blurb in its original German. Do you remember when you actually had to click the links to really know what the story was about? More Slashdotters should integrate the entire article's text into the summary.
