blog = boring
I have written a letter about this issue, which is posted on my blog
Defition of the word blog, among other things -
Podcasting is right up there with blog......in my list of overhyped/overmarketed buzzwords.
This page carries a pretty accurate and humorous description of my feelings on these overused buzzwords. To quote:
Lately I've been hearing a lot of stupid people parroting stupid buzz words. There are too many to list all of them here, but I'll be damned if I'm not going to try. I propose that we all agree, here and now, to strike these words and phrases from our collective for the betterment of humanity, and the improvement of my blood pressure. Thank you.
Podcast: Someone had the revolutionary idea of taking a compressed audio file and putting it online. Yeah, doesn't sound so sexy when I describe it for what it is, does it you morons? It would have been a great idea if streaming audio wasn't already around for over a decade before the word "podcast" entered the lexicon. Man, I can't stand the word "lexicon." Talking about all these shitty words has made me start using shitty words. I'm so pissed, I just slammed the door shut on some kid's nuts.
Podcasting: It's snob for "streaming audio."
Podcatcher: Any idiot with an iPod, web browser, or ears.

Maddox on blogging idiots
Blogger: Term used to describe anyone with enough time or narcissism to document every tedious bit of minutia filling their uneventful lives. Possibly the most annoying thing about bloggers is the sense of self-importance they get after even the most modest of publicity. Sometimes it takes as little as a referral on a more popular blogger's website to set the lesser blogger's ego into orbit.
Then God forbid a blogger gets mentioned on CNN. If you thought it was impossible for a certain blogger to get more pious than he was, wait until you see the shit storm of self-righteous save-the-world bullshit after a network plug. Suddenly the boring, mild-mannered blogger you once knew will turn into Mother Theresa, and will single handedly take it upon himself to end world hunger with his stupid links to band websites and other smug blogger dipshits.
Blogging: If minds had anuses, blogging would be what your mind would do when it had to take a dump.

Re:Podcasting?

Podcasting is just a stupid buzzword
I don't see the link to the RSS feed anywhere on that page. No RSS = not a podcast.
And that RSS feed would make just how much of a difference, if I may ask?
I refer you to Maddox's "If these words were people, I would embrace their genocide". It's a good read for all you people who seem to think all these blogs in the blogosphere podcasting Filegate-pundits actually is something more than stupid words for old things.
No, really. Read it.

Re:Podcasting?
I think maddox best addressed the issue of all the buzzwords bloggers are shitting out by the minute: maddox's take.
"Podcast: Someone had the revolutionary idea of taking a compressed audio file and putting it online. Yeah, doesn't sound so sexy when I describe it for what it is, does it you morons?" -
Re:Podcasting?
Read this article - I think you'd enjoy it (and it is indeed relevant to the discussion).

More info on websense
The "security" frim websense is actually a censorship firm. For examples of their work, you can read maddox's little article on them.

Re:Do-gooder
If you want to read another interesting take on this entire thing visit Maddox's site. He has quite the story up on it.
Oh, duh. I meant to link to that as well.

Big Whoop
Maddox has posted what I've been saying for a while - the change from Mature to AO means nothing for this particular game.
What it means in the future is yet to be seen. But, those 17 year-olds who wanted to get the game now are screwed - they'll just have to wait until either Rockstar releases a censored version (that still has all the looting, drugs and violence), or their parents buy them the game (like parents ever do that!) -

Re:Video Blog?
Check out Maddox's take on "blog".
-
maddox on blogging, vlogging etc
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=b
a nish/
Videoblog: Another idiot who had the bright idea of coining a term for posting a file online, except instead of music, it's crappy home videos.
Vlog: I don't even know if this is being used yet, but I suspect it will be used soon if it hasn't, so preemptive strike, bitches. -
You're not alone
The best web page in the universe is squarely in your corner, buddy. FTFA:
In observation of all these shitty phrases and acronyms, I've decided to coin another phrase that can be used for "blog" called: comment-log or CLOG for short. What users do is labor over documenting their inconsequential lives, trivializing man's greatest invention, the microprocessor, until the Internet is so CLOGGED that commerce comes to a screeching halt. Anyone contributing to the congestion would be known as a CLOGGER. I hate blogs. -
Re:On logging webs.
Here's what our thoughtful, considerate critic Maddox has to say about the issue: http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=b
a nish . Amusing read, as is all of his stuff. -
OMG Bloggers ...
... hear what maddox has to say about them: http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=b
a nish -
According to Maddox:
Blogging: If minds had anuses, blogging would be what your mind would do when it had to take a dump.
<maddox> -
Obligatory...
Oh man. If Maddox heard about this, he'd be pretty upset.
Oh wait. No, he wouldn't. Because he's a badass pirate, and according to the Uncyclopedia, "it is important to note that pirates will never, ever stop being cool."
Not to be confused with Ninjas, who "just totally flip out and cut people's heads off ALL the time". Ninjas would not make good bloggers, because they would constantly be attacking their monitors because they look like heads. -
Why Stupid patents? You going to back up your claims about about why it is stupid? Or are you appealing to the lesser mods around here who mod anyone up who derides big corporations and fits into
/. groupthink? What happened to the yesteryear of well thought
/. posts? This place has caught the DailyKos/LGF emotion over thinking meme. It's no wonder Maddox and Kottke are thinking that blogs are starting to suck ass. -
Down-sampling versus made up words
Just incase the hyperventillating bloggers pick up this story, the correct magic word is down-sampling.
For an insightful, and balanced view into blogging read this article -
Considering ISP's and hosting companies
Are usually staffed by some pretty decent folks, and verisign are the scum of the earth, and I can quickly see them pricing themselves out of the DNS market. People are realizing the power of a
.com is like a rose... or was that... anyway, the smells like shit *confused*.
Since the community of web developers is thankfully separated from the hyperventilating MOOCFA crowd (make our own crazy fly acronyms) (for an indepth reference, read this insightful article) I can see that the google warriors of our time will find ways to drop the .net, and basically give the finger to verisign.
After the fuss they caused breaking the whole damn internet, I don't think many people in technical decision making/planning roles (which I would guestimate would cover 80% of .net purchases) would really want to be ass-fucked by them.
Check out that link (here) you will like it, and it saves me some keystrokes harping on about hyperventilating eunuchs.

Re:I hope not!
Heh, reminds me of Maddox' rants against Orbitz. (All things said I side with Maddox on this one though)

Orbitz blows.
Yes, they might have blogs. Or they may just be named Maddox.

Re:Smith is oblivious
As a paradigm of your third example, the website run by Maddox is an excellent example. He does not run any ads on his website, and he gains more hits than many corporate websites, according to one article of his. With over 100,000,000 hits, his bandwidth bill certainly can not be cheap, yet he still manages to keep the site going entirely by donations and his own money.
-
for example
"companies used to dismiss vocal complaints from one or two consumers as an aberration. But now, they have to pay attention because now those complainers may have blogs."
for example maddox and orbits. -
Oh wow
I don't know much about this device and don't really care to learn anything, but if you can watch anime and type in Japanese, it would rule! A big step closer to being this guy.

The best "sucks" page in the whole universe
Of course the subject matter of Maddox's page is not for the weak of heart or mind. So if you are easily offended, please do not read his web pages. He is, like me, a fellow pirate.
Maddox a man with an opinion on everything.
Read how he says that Orbitz blows.
Read how he trashes Websense.
Read his suggestions for CompUSA.
Read his review on a Fox News Network show.
His review of a McDonald's ad campaign.
Read how he is more popular than Pepsi!
His advice on dealing with pesky credit card companies.
Read his review of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy movies.

Maddox's opinion on suicide
Has anyone read Maddox's opinion on suicide? He jokingly encourages such an act, but would a site such as his, even though it is meant to be satirical and not serious be a crime in the eyes of the Australian government? The link to his suicide article is http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=s

What's wrong with taking a lethal dose of paracetamol (double the lethal dose to be sure), lying down in your bed, drifting off and never waking up again. Certainly not painful or messy.

Re:The sound of silence
I spent three days of productive work time listening to polyphonic ringtone versions of speed metal, trying to find exactly the ringtone that expressed my personality
What a disgusting person. 3 days picking out a stupid sound? I think she has officially redefined shallow. It's stupid enough to see a woman agonizing for half an hour over whether to wear the seafoam or the aqua colored turtlneck. We're talking about a 10 second freaking sound clip you stupid yuppie. "Three days of productive work time?" Does that mean you get to charge a client for this BS? Then she presumes that it's perfectly fine for her phone to go off in a meeting, where other people are hopefully trying to get some work accomplished, and if not, desperately hoping the meeting won't lengthened by some dumb broad taking a break to say "Can you hear me now?" 10 times over while pacing around the room looking for better reception.
Then the next paragraph goes on to babble about the artistic value of a ringtone because it "teaches us how songs work." Anybody who buys into that crap needs to go read Maddox's latest article on impressionable idiots, right now. -
