Action Quake - Predecessor to Urban Terror
There was a not very popular mad for Quake 2 called Action Quake 2 that sucked me in back in the early days when mods started to gain popularity as alternatives to the plain vanilla game. The Urban Terrormod is basically an improved copy for Quake 3 with different weapons.
The idea is the same though, realistic weapon mechanics, including long reload times, very powerful bullet hits resulting in a lot of damage, hits require bandaging to avoid bleeding out and dying, bandaging requires you to stand still for many seconds unable to protect yourself or run away. Grenades are absolutely deadly with very large blast radiuses making them very powerful but they require time to prime and throw that can result in you getting shot and killed before you throw your grenade off. There are many, many one-shot kills due to snipers, well placed automatic gun fire at your head, grenade blasts clearing hallways on the front-line of the fight between bases.
The Capture The Flag type games turn into a grenade spam, sniper alley, and death-rush type of scenarios if both teams have competent players who can hold and defend a mid-point front-line bottleneck such as a hallway or two. Most maps have multiple routes to the enemy's base resulting in 2 or 3 front-line bottleneck hallways, with shotgunners camping waiting for people to run through, noobs grenade spamming the hallway, and snipers sitting far back picking off any folks showing their heads.
The more interesting game is the Last Man Standing with teams where each team goes against the other and there are no respawns but usually in those games the team with better squad work and team work will take out the uncoordinated noobs running around looking for a fight. Ambush scenarios are very common with multiple people camping a well known walk-by spot to catch a few folks from the other team off-guard. Camping is usually the default tactic so you end up walking along walls and checking all corners before walking through them.
These two mods kept my interest a lot longer than the run-and-gun type games since there was more skill required to survive and larger penalties for failure when you did get shot. Marksmanship became important since even a lowly shotgun or sub-machinegun was a great weapon and you didn't require ultra power rocket launchers or plasma guns. Pistol battles and knife attacks were also quite common since the reload time penalty was so high that it was faster to draw your sidearm and try to finish off a wounded guy in a firefight than it was to reload your primary gun. You could hear this happening all over the levels with trrrat, trraat, trraat machinegun fire then a pause, with pop, pop, pop pistol fire.
Very interesting and engaging mods. A lot of good memories and times.

UrT: An FPS with Improved Realism
Urban Terror is a good example of a game that makes an effort to have "realistic" weapon damage effects. In the game—a free, open-source FPS—players square off using modern weapons and equipment. When you spray machine gun fire at your opponents, your accuracy degrades. When you get hit, you start bleeding, and you must bandage your wounds quickly before you bleed out. If you are shot in the leg, your movement speed decreases, and you also take damage to your legs if you fall from heights greater than one story. If you are shot in the arm, your accuracy decreases. Reloading your weapons takes time, and in the middle of combat it is usually more expedient to draw your trusty sidearm, rather than reload.
Unlike most FPSs, where players engage in running gunfights that can last for tens of seconds, the typical Urban Terror engagement is very short; players frequently die before they realize they are under attack. This turns the game into an unending quest for the perfect ambush—attacking with surprise, from behind, almost always ensures victory. Many players tend to be snipers or campers, since the gameplay mechanics make very difficult to "run and gun" effectively. With that being said, it is still possible to power-slide down a hallway, turn, and take out two alert enemies with well-placed bursts—it's just very, very difficult.
Nonetheless, UrT distinguishes itself for its reliance on teamwork. There are almost no plain Deathmatch servers, since UrT Deathmatches simply aren't interesting. Instead, it is all about the team-based gameplay: team-DM, CTF, and bombing run missions. A lone man is easy prey, but squad of two or three players can take and hold an enemy base for some time, provided they know what they're doing. In UrT, working with others is the key to victory, and your ability to score frags can increase exponentially if your team-mates are nearby. If you like teamwork, and don't mind the occasional insta-gib, then you should consider checking out UrT. The game is based on ioquake3 and will run on almost any Windows/Linux/Mac system that's less than ten years old.

Re:Steam?
Yes there are quite a few full mods based on Q3 that come with their own content. For example, you could go get Urban Terror, a very well-made full mod on the Q3 engine.
And yes, the Q3 engine is very much open source and free software at this point. Artwork and level design that came with the original game is not even vaguely related to source code and shouldn't fall into some source licensing debate.
If you want free content, talk to the artists (or their owners), but you can do anything you like with the software of Quake 3.

Re:Looks like FUN
I completly agree with you. I play Urban Terror ( http://www.urbanterror.net/ ) which is a Q3 mod. It's graphics aren't super but it's FUN to play.
Also, I *hated* (and never finished) Crysis. I didn't enjoy it at all, the AI was sniping me with pistols miles away while I couldn't even see them, and if I did, I'd always miss my shots. Totally frustrating.

Urban Terror
I've said it a millon times, here's one more.
Urban terror (http://www.urbanterror.net/) is Counter Strike, less realistic, more fun. Runs in Linux, MacOSX and Windows. Check it out.
-
Urban Terror
You can also try Urban Terror. I have played it for a few months and can attest that the maps are fun, gameplay is great, there aren't many cheaters (if any) and the general behavior on the servers is alright.

quake engine games...
I suggest a couple multiplayer shooters. Warsow http://www.warsow.net/ and Urban Terror http://www.urbanterror.net/ They're both free and based on the open sourced Quake engine (2 and 3). The Intel cards in those Dells should be enough for them. Plus they both have Linux and Windows clients.
-
Urban Terror
Urban Terror is basically counter strike. It is based on the Quake III engine. I was surprised that it was both free and very well done. Available for windows, mac, and Linux. Lots of servers hosting games with lots of players. Free download http://www.urbanterror.net/news.php
-
Urban Terror
MTA is just a OS extension to play your actual closed-source version GTA in Multiplayer.
If you want to cover open-source games cover this one:
Urban Terror
UT is an open-source Counter Strike "clone" that runs on OS X, Linux and Windows. It's awesome. These guys did a great job.
In their own words: "Urban Terror(TM) is a free multiplayer first person shooter, that (thanks to ioquake3) does not require Quake III Arena. It is available for Windows, Linux and Macintosh.
Urban Terror can be described as a Hollywood tactical shooter; somewhat realism based, but the motto is "fun over realism". This results in a very unique, enjoyable and addictive game."
If you know more games like this one, please reply to this post. I'd like to know which other free, multi-OS games are out there. -
Try Urban Terror?
Urban Terror is Free. Plays on Linux, OS X, and Windows.
More of a contemporary Counter Strike than a Call of Duty, but a good game none the less.

Re:And what about BIOS upgrades?
There are some 3D games that run on Linux.
I'm going to mention one that I play myself, Urban Terror (a semi-realistic shooter based on Quake 3).
Sure, it's a few years old. I don't care, it's still just as fun. Occasionally I'll even play some good old "regular" Quake 3.
To be perfectly honest, I don't run UrT or Q3 on Linux myself, I run Mac OS X. The point is, if I ever decided to switch away from Mac OS X to Ubuntu, almost all the games I have on my computer right now would run on Linux as well. Actually, let me go through my Applications folder right now:
- Bridge Construction Set -- yes, it runs on Linux
- DEFCON -- yup. That too.
- Kill Monty -- unfortunately, no.
:-( (Then again, that doesn't run on Windows either.) - Frets On Fire -- yup. It runs on Linux. And way better than on OS X too.
- OpenTTD -- yep. It runs on Linux too.
- IOQuake3 -- sure.
- SNES9x (and by extention, a collection of Super Nintendo games), sure, works on Linux
- Tetrinet Aqua does not run on Linux, but other (and better) Tetrinet clients do.
- The Ur-Quan Masters runs on Linux.
- Uplink runs on Linux.
- And finally, as discussed before, Urban Terror runs on Linux.
So, all the games I actually have on my hard drive and play would run on Linux if I decided to migrate. Except for Kill Monty. (But then again, that doesn't run on Windows either.)
The lack of games are not what's keeping me on Mac OS X on my machine.
Oh, and in response to your issue about not being able to flash because you'd need either Windows or DOS -- I give you FreeDOS.

Looks like they were beaten to the punch
These computer scientists have already developed a simulation of Urban Terror. Perhaps these two useful projects can share data, or even possibly merge!

Another greate game
Not completely 'Open Source' but is based on the Q3 engine.

Urban Terror?
What about Urban Terror? http://www.urbanterror.net/ . Just released a new version. It's a pretty fun game.
-
Share it
If you can't sell it, open it up! Release it under the GNU GPLv3 and perhaps the content under CC by-sa-nc. There's great stuff coming from the modding community, some mods are even completely new games like Bid For Power, True Combat Elite and Urban Terror (the more recent versions of it are quite well done).
Enemy Territory was canceled and then put up for download, it became very popular and True Combat Elite is based on it. Heck, it's probably being shared on news groups and through bit torrent already, uploading your own torrent to a torrent site costs nothing! -
Re:hmm
Well, it's technically not Open Source, but the engine is, and it's free:
Urban Terror is MUCH better than counter strike OR Alien Arena. Play some DM on Ramelle, you will love it!

Re:hmm
Well, Urban Terror is.
Let the flamefests begin! -
Re:"Yeah, those suspicious e-lectronics".
Umm.. did you look at the picture of it? That doesn't look like a bomb. It's a bread board with some wires in it. You know what looks more like a bomb? A cell phone. Fortnately they didn't arrest everyone who had one of those!
Take a look at these pictures. What she was wearing looks like a mini version of one of THESE. None of which, looks anything like a cell phone, btw, but look strikingly similar to what she had on.
Other pictures.
HERE
and HERE (this actually looks more like what was on her shirt, minus the wires)
Of course, she could have easily ended up like THIS guy who was only wearing a vest with a bunch of pockets! (warning, graphic)
Ah, screw it... use google images and search for "suicide bomb vest". You won't find any cell phones there, but you might find a few that look very similar to her shirt! -
Re:This is getting really f-ing old
Quake 3 Arena is one of the worst multiplayer FPS games
... compared to Quake 2 even. I remember when I bought Q3A and played it for hours then went online with it and realized how much better Quake 2 was (with community mods of course). I spent many many hours playing Q2:UT (Urban Terror) and trust me, low res doesn't cut it when you're playing anything semi-realistic (sneaking, strategizing, not running around jumping like an idiot spraying anything that moves with bullets).
I'm sure there are many ranges of hard core FPS gamer, but those who work as teams and want to hit what they're looking at accurately from more than 10 feet away like their games running at more than 640x480. -
Re:Quake 3 Source Code to be Released
How many games do you know that use the Quake3 engine without even minor tweaking of the engine?
I believe Urban Terror is one, and for me, the only one game that I still play!

Bah.
I used to spend a ridiculous amount of time playing Urban Terror , and frankly, some of the 'cheating' he mentions actually kept the game interesting.
I understand nobody wants to play against wallhackers and aimbots, but what is wrong with using avatar pyramids to gain access to higher levels? If the devs didn't want people to get there, why the heck did they leave it as a solid surface?
Good sentiment, bad execution. -
Re:Linux fortune
don't forget Urban Terror!
its a counter-strike like mod that was originally made for quake 3 (also fully supported in 'nux) and the team that developed it is working on a new version for Enemy Territory
you can get the quake 3 version from http://www.urbanterror.net/ -
Re:ET, the free game platform?
Yes and Urban Terror is coming as well. There is a problem in that there is no Mac client, though.
http://www.urbanterror.net/ -
What I am waiting for is...
What I am waiting for is the http://urbanterror.net/port to ET. I've been playing the UT mod for quake3 for ages now and it's the best playing mod of all times. Those guys don't really care about how good it looks. They just want it to play great. And in the end that's all that matters.

Re:EULA
One favourite at our lan partys is Urban Terror which is a Q3 mod. A few great maps like laneway, although could get kinda messy with any more then 10-12 people.

What a real geek needs
pfft, who cares.
I'm a geek so that means I don't run Windows. And I'm a real geek so that means I dont rely on Wine either.
ID Software has a Quake3 port available for Windows, linux, and Mac OSX. And Urban Terror works with them all.
If your really a geek and want to engage in some violent first person combat look no further than Quake3 and Urban Terror.
Yeah, I know, shameless plug for one of my favorite games in somebody elses game thread, sue me. :P

Re:Urban Terror
You should jump back in... a lot's changed, and SID just announced that they are porting it over to the Enemy Territory engine, so within a couple months there should be enough of a shakeup within the games so that those people with amazingly well-developed skills will have to get back onto the learning ladder.
As far as being a newbie to UrT, my experience is that if you say sorry when you TK someone, don't make the same mistake too many times, and generally try to be friendly, on most servers you'll be treated well even by the most experienced players. Of course there are still some jerks, but that's the case everywhere. Some of the better servers around are TexasUT, FSK405, Mumble's Meat-Rack, and The 6th Floor...
The more the merrier =] -
Re:Enemy Territory
Also, Urban Terror will be releasing future versions on ET instead of Q3. I've found Urban Terror to be quite entertaining after I got bored with Q3 Rocket Arena, Q3CTF, Q3 Classic CTF and some other Q3 mods. I'm glad they've made the decision to move on to ET.

Re:worse yet
Actually, punkbuster has been releasing a LOT of updates in the last month or so. I actually had it nail me twice on the same session! I loaded a game of my favorite mod, fragged somebody, got bumped for a punkbuster update, switched to a vt, ran pbweb (much faster than waiting for the ingame download to work, if it even ever does), got the update, did a
/reconnect to the game server, and played for about 2 hours, at which point I got bumped to spec AGAIN for a pb update. I just had to laugh.
Those pricks like noskill must be hating life these days =] -
Urban Terror getting ported
Urban Terror of Silicon Ice fame is getting ported to RtCW: Enemy Territory since they released the source (I think, or at least Silicon Ice Development has it) so they'll release an official version 1 (no beta this time) which is the equivalent of version 3.3 (I think).
Urban Terror will guarrantee that you fail at least one course because of it. :D -
Re:If you want quake, buy quake.
Urban Terror is terrific, I've played it on the Mac & Windows, either way is the same. Check out some of the
gameplay screens.
Hmm there's plenty of other mods for Quake III Arena as well.

Re:Linux version?

Q3A Mod - Urban Terror.
I highly suggest Urban Terror. -- it's a team-based (or DM) semi-realism mod that bares some semblence to QuakeWorld mixed with Counter-Strike. Very fast paced when you want it to be, but has semi-realistic weapons and excellent maps. Personally, I found that it always beat Counter-Strike in pure fun-factor hands-down.
Enjoy! -
Re:Urban Terror mod for Q3A?
DOH! Wrong tags (ezboard).
try again. -
Re:Why do modders seem to prefer Half-Life?
You coulda reworded that slightly and been a karma whore
:)
Urban Terror looks like Golden Eye + Counter Strike -
Re:Kick em out...
Most cheats are well known. For Quake III based, OGC (that's an interesting page in general with good screenshots) is well known and often suspected.
However I think the problem isn't so much at LAN games where you have actual physical people who'll clearly see if you're turning on auto-aim or wallhacks, but rather online games where every person is isolated, and the only monitoring is the realism of their gameplay. Some guys, like Urban Terror, allow some players to spectate, or to spectate after they die, and this can allow one to look over someone's shoulder and determine, to a pretty good accuracy, if their play seems skillfully good, or unreasonable. Wallhackers, for instance, are generally brutally obvious.
Most online games I've played have been ruined by hackers. From Diablo, to Quake 3, to America's Army. Cheaters in online games are not only morally reprehensible, they seem to have a very weak desire to be challenged, and hence can often be considered the weak of the herd. -
Re:Hardware requirements
As tacky as replying to yourself is, I should point out that I get 30+ fps in online gaming on that machine playing Quake III Arena and 15+ fps in the Urban Terror TC.

Wallhackers and the honesty of surveillance
I'm a fan of the game Urban Terror, a mod for Quake 3, and play online a fair bit (I usually run Visual Studio on one monitor, UT on the other: One good thing about being a rambo player in team survivor games is that I'm dead the majority of the time, and hence find it to actually be a remarkably productive time): While recently an anti-cheat tool, PunkBuster was added to Q3 (and it is constantly updated), there is still a serious issue of cheaters, the most common among them being wallhackers. What is a wallhacker? Well it's what was mentioned in the summary: Wire frame worlds, allowing cheating players to view other players whereever they are on the map, obviously giving a pretty clear advantage.
So what does this have to do with the honesty of surveillance? Well in team survivor when you die you can ghost other players as they move around the map, and it tends to be that wallhackers are discovered quite quickly--Their behaviour and actions in the game do not correlate with the information that they should be visually receiving (from what we can see ghosting them). Usually this quickly leads to cries of cheater and a vote to kick the offending player. -
Re:This list is why I keep a Windows box around.
Quake3 is still the best because of mods like Urban Terror and tons of others. It's the engine that counts, not the game itself.
-
Re:Quake III still kicks ass!!!!!!!!!
Personally Quake II is the one that I think was probably the best in terms of style (after Doom II of course!), I never really liked Quake that much. Currently I play quite a lot of UrbanTerror which is a free Q3 total conversion which is like Counterstrike. UrbanTerror works fine in Linux and they have a Linux section of the support forums.
The other Linux games I have a Wolfenstine and Tribes 2 but after playing them for a bit I found that I always end up going back to Quake 3.
I don't actually miss the fact that there are not many Linux games -- there are enough for the time I have to play them.
-
Re:x-anything
Hey, you must play urban terror too! It's improving..but there are still heaps of cheaters out there.
-
Re:What (cool thing) could you do w/multiple devic
While you most certainly don't need multiple AGP ports for multi-monitor (there are several solutions: Most video cards nowadays let you multihead with a single card. Examples: GF4 4400 (using that in this PC right now), ATI 8500, Matrox (Matrox even has a triple head solution). Occasionally you need to get a DVI->VGA adapter for the second port if you don't have a DVI LCD screen, but it isn't a biggie.
Right now as I type this I'm typing on the right monitor while on the left monitor I have a game of Urban Terror going (I'm dead right now so I have some downtime). Normally I use dual-monitors to have documentation (i.e. web sites, MSDN, etc) open on one monitor and the development environment on the other. It really is brilliant and I find it difficult operating without it now. -
UrbanTerror
For those that like CounterStrike, check out UrbanTerror. It's a TC built upon the Q3 engine, and it's quite nice.
-
Re:His previous mod..
Yes, that mod was very popular. In fact, I ran a popular AQ2 server (Ant Farm's Action Quake2 Movie Set) when team play was introduced in this mod. First at LAN parties (before teamplay), this mod wasn't popular. Eventually, it did (two full Linux servers!)
:). Ahhh, the good old days.
I dislike the new AQ2-related sequels (Action Half-Life and Reaction Quake3). I am currently into these mods: Day of Defeat (HL), Urban Terror, and getting into Navy Seals (Q3A) :)
-
not meant to be a flame, but
CS sucks. Play anywhere on the internet and you'll find the players are the ones who make it suck like it does. Cheating is rampant, and if you're not cheating and manage to get a good score, everyone will accuse you of cheating anyway.
Personally, I much prefer the Urban Terror mod for quake3. Although still in beta, I believe it's already much better than CS. ....and I don't have to run it in Wine ;) -
Urban Terror Rocks!
Urban Terror is a great Quake3 mod. It runs natively under linux, there's hardly any cheatz, and the community is strong, with the developers taking an active role.
