Re:We can only hope
Well they could post all the numerous guides they missed. I had a bunch on my website, which I'll cut and paste here for Geek Dating Guide pleasure: Why Geeks Make the Best Boyfriends
"I just Want To Be Friends"
There is also the Geek Dating Flowchart
Why Girls Actually Want Geeks
Why it usually doesn't happen
and the pitfalls of dating a nerd
15+ reasons why geek guys are "not so bad at all".
How To Lose A Geek in 10 Seconds.
And cause Slashdot loves Futurama, quotes here for your reading pleasure (both said by Fry):
"What? Valentine's Day is coming up?!?! Crap! I forgot to get a girlfriend again"
"Well she was in love with the part of me that's a slob. I was in love with her with the part of me that's desperate."
And finally, have a date for Valentine's but don't know what to do? Never fear, let old 50's educational movies guide you. From what do to on a date, Do's and Don't of Dating and Beginning Dating to Going Steady and How do you Know It's Love, cheesy acting and horrible plots can show you the way.

I like UserFriendly's take on it...
You can see it here. Also, there's lots of encrypted communications programs or file transfer programs out there, if you feel the need for it. Stenograhy works too. Bin Laden was sending people to aviator school. Why wouldn't he be sending someone to do a CS degree in encryption and stenography too?
You may keep strong encryption out of the hands of the general public, because they have no real interest in it. But for a determined group, the cat is out of the bag many years ago. Throwing together some AES + SHA + Diffie-Hellman reference code I could probably make a secure tool before the end of business today. And I'm hardly an expert on the subject...

Re:Reverse spam really isn't that new...but instead forged the whole thing so the send from is my email address
Including the Received lines? Learning how to read those, backstepping from the last (trusted) one takes a bit of practice, but will get you to the spammer or the open proxy that he's hijacking.
The main thing to track is the web site that most spammers have as the "payload" of their spam. Disposable accounts to send the spam are easy to replace, but getting the web site killed hurts the spammer. (Alas, too many ISPs are wearing the Enormous Foam Helm of Stupidity about spam-support web sites.)

Hemos & I have been playing The Sims Online- Come visit the Slashdot Charisma Sweatshop on the absolute west edge of the Mt Fuji City and say hi. I got my real nick for once too! I love MMORPGs and 'There' looks like another wrinkle on taking Sims type games online. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.
I thought this would be a fitting UF comic, considering how Slashdot is supposed to be pro-freedom/anti-corporatism. Have fun SimPeddling your SimAss to EA for SimDollars. Go to the SimMac and have a SimHeartattack or buy a SimPentium4 with SimHyperthreading!

LOTR UserFriendly styleEver wondered what Lord of the Rings would look like in the UserFriendly comic strip universe?
Here is the answer. High octane laughs await.
New to the strip should start by skimming through a couple of early UF strips to get in the mood, and this for Dust Puppy background.

Re:They missed one...
I'd also like to point out that some webdesigners actually develop websites as a job for real living customers. Who pay them. For making websites look like what they want. Pretty websites. And sometimes those pretty websites require absolutely (does that work as an adverb?) sized tables.
<rant>It is really incredibly amazing how bloody stupid soi disant Web designers are. Look if you want to design for bloody paper, design for bloody paper. The Web is not a fixed size medium. I'm currently using two browsing devices - one with a resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels, and one with a resolution of 320 x 200 pixels. If you cannot design a page which will flexibly reflow for both these devices, you cannot design for the Web, period. You are a dinosaur. Stick to paper, it's all you're good for.</rant>
if you ever use a fixed size table, if you ever use a table to position content, you are doing it wrong. If you expect your page to look the same on everybody's browser, then you expect the impossible. Flexible design is easy - much easier than inflexible, broken design - and always looks good, whereas inflexible looks good only on browsers set up identically to their author's.

Showing off
For a TV demonstration, try CD Burning.
I installed knoppix on my IBM thinkpad, default install (which may be the only way with knoppix) and plugged in my USB CD/RW drive, it was automatically detected as a SCSI device. Launch CDBakeOven as root (also already installed), drag and drop, and done. It's as simple as using Roxio/Nero under windows, which means it's come a long way from writing bash scripts for mkisofs and cdrecord.
As it's something that people do regularly, it would be nice to show off that linux can be user friendly for day to day tasks.
Also, OpenOffice.org is quite impressive, intuitive, and visual.
In my (humble) opinion, the programmes included with the knoppix distro are a good general selection for showing off. (:

Re:This is the new management?
How are you gauging "successful online publication"? Are they making a profit from their ads? Can it be shown that the free service increases readership of the printed publications?
This is an early warning of Things To Come. As the economy stays in the doldrums, we will see more free/ad-driven services online either dry-up or turn to subscriptions.
It happened here at slashdot, it happened at User Friendly. It's happening.
There is freedom of information, but that information won't be available for free... -
Re:Moot?
I'm guessing they are doing it now to serve as an 'example' the next time they release some sort of encoding.
They want to scare the people who might crack the code, of course I think userfriendly explained it the best. -

Some more good comics
Here's some online comics that might be worth checking out:
Sluggy - Students, aliens, ghosts, psychotic rabbits, evil kittens. One of the oldest and niftiest comics online.
User Friendly - Linux, geeks. You get the idea.
Megatokyo - An online manga following Piro and Largo whilst stranded in Tokyo.
Schlock Mercenary - Not too good art, but usually a very good and suitably sci-fi-ish plot.
Clan of the Cats - A modern-day witch cursed to change into a panther. Good artwork.
RPG World - Great art. A parody of almost any role playing game (the console variety) you'd care to play.
Ghost Cat - It's a cat! It's a ghost! It's ghost cat!
Elf Life - Elves, fairies, barbarians, time travel, romance, comedy, and very well drawn as well.
Exploitation Now! - An anime-ish comic with good art and an interesting, if sporadic, plot.
Real Life - It's real life. Except it's not. Reasonably funny.
Penny Arcade - The mother of all gaming comics. Very funny :)
Sephen - A relative newcomer, but wow! Great pencil-work!
8-bit Theater - The grandpappy of all sprite comics. I think. It's funny anyway. Go read :)
Demonology 101 - Fantastic art, fantastic plot! If only it came out more often! Ah well, the world isn't perfect.
Oh, and I can't really get away without mentioning my brother's sprite comic, Pixelated!. It really isn't bad. No, really!

Re:Noooooo.....
I read Angst Technology every day, in fact, when I started reading it I spent the good part of 3 hours reading all the strips from when it started.
No matter which way you look at this cartoon it is damn funny. Most people in the IT industry will get the jokes. As far as reusing whole cells is concerned I don't think it happens. He may reuse drawings of individual characters but I have not noticed and has not detracted from how good the strip is.
I find it just as funny as User Friendly but with better cartooning. -
What online comics really need...
This is cool, but what online comics really need is hosting that doesn't whack them into oblivion with bandwith charges when they get popular. Preferably hosting that doesn't also put restrictions on them or make them charge for access to the archives.
My favorite online comics are User Friendly, Megatokyo and Circle Weave. At least two of these have a huge audience and equally huge bandwidth usage. For all I know the third one will also now that I gave its URL here on /. Oh well...

More likely, he will probably slip right through before you, and you get stoped because of a filling. Kinda like this User Friendly commic (Apr 19, 1998).

Re:Is all this work really worth it??
Well, I think userfriendly put it best, in that case.
There's a trade-off the RIAA and others like it (MPAA) don't realize. The kind of tactics they're using are not just driving people away from the sanctioned download sites, but they're driving people away from CDs themselves!
They're hurting their own user base. Right now, it's a very small percentage of that user base, but it's the educated and motivated portion, which is a danger to them in the long-run.
The Republican takeover of the (U.S.) Senate has at least one positive outcome - the indefinite shelving of the Hollings bill. -

Re:YES YES YES
(B) a technological measure `effectively controls access to a work' if the measure, in the ordinary course of its operation, requires the application of information, or a process or a treatment, with the authority of the copyright owner, to gain access to the work.
In layspeak: if something stops you from looking at something without someone's permission, then it 'effectively controls access'.
But what exactly does 'effectively' mean?
(and yeah, it may be silly to link to a cartoon, but it raises a VERY good point. The first definition in the two dictionaries at hand right now list something like "in an effective way" as the first (and predominant?) definition of 'effective') -
Re:I can see it now...

Re:Fritz' hit list
May I refer you to today's "User Friendly"?
That's how I'd like to see it handled. If the copy protection isn't effective, the law shouldn't be enforced. ROT-13'ing something isn't effective, as one example.
