Re:Who cares?
It's not like you'll have to worry about stores instituting such a policy anyway... simple economics says that if there is a market for those bare games (there is), they will support that market. As much as I hate seeing the games without their original packaging (except perhaps the SNES, with possibly the worst game packaging of any system) there's not much you can do about it. Perhaps the stores could offer an additional credit or two for games with their box and/or manual.
Having gotten my own house not too long ago, I've realized how much space that stuff takes up. I've actually gotten rid of quite a bit of boxes, or at least broken them down and put them in storage. I'm glad there are places online like MobyGames and The Video Game Museum to document the packaging of these games. And if you're an Amiga fan, don't forget to check out the CAPS project, which is not only providing *exact* replicas of original disks, but also high quality scans of the packaging. -
Re:Not a big deal
Maybe you didn't play any PS1 games on your PS2, but nearly all of my friends did. One of my friends got hooked on my copy of FF9 and directly because of that, he went out and purchased FFX and FFX-2.
By definition, old games are...old. And crappy.
There are many who would disagree. I'm one of them. Classic games, by and large, are leagues better than the shiny 3D whiz-bang eyecandy that publishers shovel down the throats of consumers these days.
In any case, if I have a stack of old games, why wouldn't I still have the console?
Why would you want to keep an extra console hooked up and taking up space if your PS2 plays the old games even better? Let's also not forget that consoles break. The CD-ROM drive mechanism in PS1s (and PS2s for that matter) are notoriously fragile and are known to simply give up the ghost after a few years of moderate use. For crappily-built systems like these, backwards compatibility gives you a few more years at least before you have to resort to unfaithful emulations of your favorite games. -

Am I the only one that thinks this Magical Quest borrows more than a little from Cotton?

History
Before Wipeout XL, there was arguably two starting points for licensed music in games. The most obvious, was Road Rage for the Playstation. While the licensed music didn't make it into the the game proper, all of the menus / setup screens / shops used tracks from Soundgarden. At the time it was quite shocking, and the music fit well. If anything, that sold the game far more copies than it deserved.
Predating that, there was the little known BioMetal for the SNES... Yes, that's right, the SNES. That U.S. Developed games used MOD versions of 2Unlimited's excellent first album, a collection of mostly repetitive blips and beeps anyway (being dance techno). The soundtrack, however, turned out to be phenomenal, and particularly well suited to the shooter aesthetic. Sadly, the rest of the game wasn't quite as tight, and sales flagged.
Both soundtracks were excellent, but the games were terrible. I leave the consequences of this difference with Wipeout XL as an exercise to the reader.

The originals are emulated!

Picross?
Everyone knows that Battle Picross is a rip-off of Mario no Picross right? I'm assuming that the games didn't need to be original, but Mario's Picross was released for the original Gameboy way back when, so I doubt the 256k limit was too much of a problem.

Turbo Express
When did the Turbo Express come out? This site gives the specs on the Turbo Express, which could play ALL of your normal Turbo Grafix 16 games (which beat the pants off most Genesis and some SNES games).
It had nice color, good portability, and a wide selection of TG-16 Hu-Cards to choose from. The games were even smaller than Game Boy cartridges!! -
Are they owned by Microsoft? They seem to innovate in the same way.
Comix Zone by sega used the batman style "onomatopoeias..." all over the place.

Re:Dennis DyackAlso Dennis was noted in his interview for completely not answering the question:
"Have you completely abandoned the original MGS look and feel as a side effect of graphicalizing Metal Gear: Twin Snakes?"
Where exactly was that question asked?
Just something about that team's character modeling and textures is distant from the feel and tone set by the original game's art.
What? You mean it's not going to look like this anymore? That sucks =P
Are there screenshots up somewhere of the new models and textures by which you're making this judgement? Or are you just blowing hot air?

Re:I can't believe this hasn't been done.
Actually, this has been done, and a long time ago, on a Commodore 64. Only it wasn't about being the president of the USA, but prime minister of the UK government.
The game was called "Yes, prime minister". You can view some screenshots here .

They also had the 1st RTS game
AFAIK, Intellivision was the first system to have a RTS/SimCity-ish game: Utopia. You controlled a couple of islands, and had to collect resources and such. Very fun and innovative game for the day.

Re:Feh.
Heh, Paradroid. Many hours used on that game.
And then I discovered Paradroid '90 (screenshots) for the Amiga and there went some more hours.
I still play this game (both versions). -
Re:Shudder
Clearly your getting it confused with possibly the best game of all time -- Intellivision's Burger Time! Fried Egg Anyone?

Domino's Pizza - Avoid the noid
Ford - Ford Simulator

KP skips - Action Biker
The last link is to a review. A few choice words:
Action Biker signifies a depressing trend to link grotty software with expensive advertising campaigns. Let's kill this off instantly by refusing to buy such garbage.
Software like this gives junk food a bad name.

Re:Nintendo has been a pioneer in the field
I've always thought that Nintendo's portrayal of Samus Aran has been somewhat disappointing. You have this strong, cool, female character, a fighter, and then you reward the good player with some flesh shots.
I'll give Nintendo the long hair as a gift; perhaps they have some technology in the future that lets you have long hair in heavy armor. But the premise that your reward for beating the game with this woman is to see her in skimpy clothing is just a bit offensive.
Of course, the Barbie-doll portrayal of Samus, at least in the Metroid Fusion shots, is abhorrent. This is a trained mercenary, for crying out loud! She's single-handedly wiped out entire planets of alien infestations! Why is she built like a goddamned SoCal pop star?
Not that there's anything inherently wrong with a little bit of cheesecake; however, it basically negates the positive effects of having a female protagonist. Porn games have female characters too...
Metroid Prime doesn't have such endgame shots to my knowledge; the better endings simply clue you in more on the plot. This is a good thing, and I hope Nintendo and their future licensees stick to it.
(Note that the 2-4 hour non-100% Metroid Fusion shot is really cool. It makes Samus look attractive and cool but doesn't rely on sex to do it.) -

Emulation!
but what about video games?
Virtually any classic Nintendo game can run in FCE Ultra (NES), Snes9x (Super NES), or VisualBoyAdvance (GB, GBC, GBA), all of which are ported to Linux. MAME runs thousands of coin-op games. You can even dance the night away with Linux and pyDDR.
BattleField 1942 etc
The game '1942' can run in MAME or in FCE Ultra.

Pac Man ripoffs...Anyone remember all of the (blatant!) Pac-Man ripoffs?
(My favorite was Jawbreaker!)
Hell, look at all the "official" Pac -Man variants that they released.
And who can forget the Pac Man cereal? It was basically just a Lucky Charms ripoff! -
Okay here we go...
Anyone else think this is going to be popular for about a week before it dies? They think they're going to have an advantage becase they're blending all sorts of units together.
Lets compare shall we?
according to Nintendo, The GBA has a 2.9" reflective TFT screen capable of 32,768 colors and a resolution of 240x160. It is powered by a 32bit ARM processor.
This phone has a slightly higher resolution, only 4096 colors, and no mention of how good the gpu unit underneath is. Their main selling point is that you're getting games, a phone, an mp3 player and whatever else they think they can squeeze in there.
No one's going to buy this for the games if the games look only marginally better than game gear games. The game gear can match this new system color for color. If the OLD gameboy beat down the Game Gear, then how is this thing supposed to compete with the GBA as far as games go? Because it's a phone? Because it's an MP3 player? Please... most people are not going to want to carry something that big around with them. This is why phones and mp3 players are being made smaller and smaller all the time.
~shakes head~ I can't see this one going far with crowds outside the teeny-boppers, and even they will probably stick with Nintendo and a better cell phone.

Well, Someone did bother.
Fujitsu did it. It was called the FM-Towns Marty and was only in Japan. Powered by a 386, and later a 486. Had a healthy collection of Hentai Games. You can even run Linux on it!

Other worst game
Here's another worst game: Chiller, by Exidy, 1986.
It's a "horror shooter", which consists of you shooting people (mostly naked) in torture devices (and other stuff, but mostly torturing people).
- you actually torture people. part of the game is turning a vice to crush someone's head; another is turning a rack to tear people apart. another is lowering someone into a river of blood so that they can be torn apart by a croc. another is releasing a guillotine to cut someone's head off (and then shooting their face after their head's been cut off)
- the people are very detailed: you often need to shoot the chest, abdomen, thigh, shin, foot, upper arm, forearm, hand and face all separately (points for each one), and if the face hasn't been shot yet, it reacts (groans or scream) to each shot.
The programmers are sick: they invested a lot of effort into programming how you can torture and mutilate people - and they're not "faceless drones" - they are a few stationary, helpless people.
It's the most vile and tasteless game I've ever seen. I've seen thousands, and this is by far the worst; I feel dirty for even looking at it.
You can check it out in MAME if you must; here's a screenshot (scream-shot?) or two.

Bah...
Earlier this year, the company showed off an LCD panel with an embedded Zilog microprocessor.
Sega did that years ago! -
Re:Only NES game with nudity?
There was a rom hack called Nuts & Milk, a whacky little game where you were a giant penis.
Bizarre stuff.
NES pr0n. -
Ninja Gaiden, UT, Smash Bros. 2, and Metroid Prime
Again, these are EXCLUSIVES
Caps lock means you're so sure of the exclusivity of those titles...
Battlefield: 1942
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Fact: Willow has appeared in an NES game.
Ninja Gaiden
Not an exclusive. It has appeared on the NES. It's also coming to the Game Boy Advance, in a slightly modified form (different story because of unavailability of characters for licensing, but classic Ninja Gaiden gameplay is still there) as Return of the Ninja. ("Gaiden" means "sequel".)
Robotech
Fact: 1-800-Robotech was the phone number for Quarterdeck Software, publisher of the QEMM memory manager for DOS. US telephones don't have Q or Z in the mnemonic labels on their number keys, which is why Blizzard's American phone number had the word "SNOW" at one time.
Superman: Man of Steel
Superman appeared in a rather crappy (to put it lightly) Nintendo 64 title. What makes this new Xbox version so much better? (question, not flamebait)
Unreal Championship
Isn't that just UT or UT2003 adapted for a console? If so, I might as well run UT on my Quake/MAME cabinet.
WWF RAW 2
Halo alone is worth the price of the [Xbox] console right there.
Super Smash Bros. Melee is worth the price of a GameCube console right there, and in a couple months, the GameCube will be getting its own Halo killer, called Metroid Prime.
If I had to choose between Halo and 50 PS2 games, the choice would be clear.
I thought of another bad PS/2 joke. Once Bochs is ported to PS2 Linux, does that mean that the Sony PS2 can in effect become a PS-Slash-2?

Horizontal alignment????
I'm assuming horizontal alignment means the controls are horizontal from the screen? has everyone forgotten about the ill fated Sega Game Gear??? 3.58 mhz of pure gaming speed, who could ask for more!

Anatomically correct has been donemaybe not for Mario, but there are quite a few adult themed Atari 2600 games you can play with an emulator. There's even female targeted versions of some of the games.
Bachelor Party and the female version Bachelorette Party
Beat 'em and Eat 'em(due to the Atari's lo-res, I first thought the guy was holding a bazooka! Gameplay is like Kaboom, but instead of losing a bucket when you miss, the ladies fart)
Burning Desire and the female version Jungle Fever
