MOBIL AVE?
Seen at 39 and 45 seconds into the trailer - Neo in an austere white subway station with MOBIL AVE on the tiled wall. Looks like he meets a child dressed in yellow who then leaves with another party (when Neo is punched).
Simple anagram - LIMBO AVE?
There's a later subway station shot (subway train labelled "LOOP" hurtling towards the screen) at 1m42s but that doesn't look to be the same location.

I know there's a process to this...with submissions and whatnot, but oh well.
Here's the new Matrix trailer.

Why Phobos is better than MarsI think it makes sense to create a first base on a martian moon rather than on the planet.
Firstly, and ironically, the moon is a good place to go to because it's an easy place to get off. It isn't a giant gravity well like a planet is, so it is a great launch pad for further explorations, whether to the planet, back to Earth, or to other locations.
Secondly, as Phobos and Deimos are tiny, construction should be easier in the near zero G environment(once we learn how to do it), though finding the right materials might be more difficult.
Thirdly, it'll give us experience living off of and mining asteroids, which in many ways are preferable to planets, for the reasons above and because we'll be able to fly on them.
Fourthly, no pesky Martians.

Good
Unequivocably so. They offer a time limited trial version, so there is absolutely no excuse, none, for not using a morally, ethically, spiritually, physically, positively, absolutely, undeniably and reliably legit version.
Sure, they're lying about the reason, it's about money. Sure, it's possibly a futile, perhaps even a counter productive gesture; if you have to stop using a hooky Symantec product, you might end up giving money to one of their competitors. But that doesn't alter the basic rightness of their position.
Frankly, I'm surprised there's even a story here. I call -1 flamebait on this story.

They have NOT 'developed' this deviceThe submitter got it wrong. This device is in development and they can only generate extremely low power levels. They are developing the process. Here was my (rejected) post:
Scientists at Matsushita's Nanotechnology Research Laboratory in Japan are developing a power generator that uses blood to produce electricity. It emulates the process the body uses to convert food into energy. The scientists say the "bio-nano" generator could be used to run devices embedded in the body, or sugar-fed robots. Dr. Kazuo Eda, who heads the research, says bio-nano fuel cells are the next step for researchers after generators powered by hydrogen, natural gas and methanol. Hmmm... robots that use humans as batteries -- can The Matrix be far behind?

Look at home first.I just returned from 2 years backpacking around Australia and one thing I realized from travelling is how much you take your own country for granted. In that light here are some geeky things I saw in Australia that you may not be aware of:
- CSIRAC - In the Melbourne Museum "the only remaining intact first generation stored memory computer in the world"
- Parks Observatory - From the film The Dish. Yes it exists and is near Parkes only 6 hours west of Sydney. Free Visitors Center
- Powerhouse Museum - In Sydney. Displays from the industrial revolution to the digital age. Also does a cool Aibo demonstration if you've never seen one before.
As for stuff in North America, I've taken living here for granted and hardly done much local traveling so all I can think of in my neck of the woods is Science World in Vancouver. It's aimed more towards the kids though but the domed IMAX theater is impressive.
No matter what you see or do you're going to have a fantastic time. Just don't try to plan too far ahead or expect to stick to a schedule or budget or you'll spend all your time worrying and won't have any fun.

Re:Drive-ins
There is one in Macon, MO and another in Moberly, MO. Both are still in use. Just FYI.
Don't forget about the other side of the state! The Kansas City Metro area has 3 working drive-ins. The Twin, I-70 and the ultra swanky Boulevard Drive in. Ultra swanky because it is one of only 3 drive-in theatres with DTS sound. My wife and I caught TMR double-featured with X2 out there and I was in geek heaven.
Find your nearest drive-in or buy one from the drive in owner/operators page.

Re:What I don't understandA very insightful post!
While the details surrounding the choices that humanity made 10,000 years ago or so may never get unearthed, we can surmise the nature of the mental change they made by the way it effects human society today. First, we must point out, as you did in your post, that the change that humans made involved thought. Humans before this had very similar genetics to us and non-civilized peoples our culture has met certainly have our intellectual potential, if not the huge knowledge set our culture posesses. So knowing this change has an intellectual basis, we should look for its root ideas. I wish to set out the basic Memes of our civilization.
Meme 1: Humans have a special place in the universe before all other forms of life.
We feel that we no longer need to obey the laws that other animals follow. We feel that we have a âoespecialâ place in the universe, given to us by God for the religious or Reason for the atheist. Our legal system carefully systematizes this distinction between Human and Animal. It pervades most peoplesâ(TM) thoughts without them realizing it.
Meme 2: Our particular civilization has the TRUE way to live.
This way involves a totalitarian form of agriculture in which we constantly choose humans and food for humans over all other forms of life. Chickens must live so foxes must die. Cows must live so wolves must die. Wherever our civilization has gone, we have robbed the local environment to produce food or space for our human species.
Another part of this involves the notion of a âoejobâ. We feel that everyone should make products to sell so that we can buy products. This make product/get product habit encompasses every aspect of life and we have developed many theories to handle it, ie economics. A more realistic understanding of âoeeconomyâ would include the resource limitations put on the system by our environment.
Meme 3: All other humans must live this way.
Humans in this civilization always defend aggressively to the death their system. Even very minor deviances from the current cultural system, be it economic belief, religious belief, or even particular habits can cause massive wars. Whenever we encounter another group of humans, âoemissionariesâ flock to the location in order to indoctrinate these people and give them âoethe one true way.â
The agricultural system ties into it power on this planet. By constantly pushing the Food side of the population equation, we consistently have increased our human population. For 10,000 years we have grown âoemore food for a growing population.â From the look of it, we intent to do that right to the point where we completely outstrip the global environments ability to replenish itself.
Most of you who read this believe these 3 things, even if reading them separately causes you to âoefeel above that.â Please make an effort to rid yourself of these ideas because within them contains the destruction of all of the lifeforms on this planet.

Re:They are just pissed...
However, according to the estimates in USA Today, The Matrix: Reloaded dropped 50% in sales from opening weekend to this past weekend. Granted, that's an estimate, but that's still one big drop. I'd be willing to bet that a significant factor for that drop is the pirating of the movie.

Re:Mars Attacks Again
I googled the "Mars Attacks", but could find a lot of info on the sequel film that's in the works... Supposedly Warner Bros has put up $45mil for it, but I can't find a damn thing on "The WarnerBros" website.
The original didn't do so well in the box office, but it seems to have caught on as a cult hit. Most everybody I know has seen in on DVD or tape. I saw a link here (or perhaps on Some other news site for the complete set of images of the original trading cards, and had them printed up on card stock at a local print shop. My boy took them to school, and they were a big hit with the kids. (Although the teachers had a few things to "say" about them, haha)
Anyways, if you have more info on the sequel movie, please post it. I'd love to see what they have planned. Thx! -
Re:Not Surprising Though...
A nice treatise of what's wrong with being in the Matrix can be found in the Philosophy section of the movie:
http://whatisthematrix.warnerbros.com/rl_cmp/new_p hil_pryor.html
No matter how the matrix is implemented, as a good simulation (an escape from the real world, so to speak) or a bad simulation (a prison intended to keep people from the real world), it still takes away the aspect of control from a person. Or, in more revolutionary terms, it takes away your freedom.
The article above, however, takes a weird turn and ends with the following quote:
"If the Matrix weren't a kind of enslavement--and it still involved interacting with other real people--then maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all."
I don't buy into the latter completely, because there are many levels of enslavement. Voluntarily putting yourself in the Matrix, or any simulation for that matter, is a form of voluntary enslavement--you are letting the machine take control of your life. That may be okay, as long as you are made fully aware of the reasons for your submission (as what Cypher did). But hiding that very fact from people and not allowing them to choose is what makes the Matrix inherently evil -- the choice is gone. -
Link to "Philosophy & The Matrix" section
Here is it for those of you who want to read the other papers on the site. Philosophy & The Matrix
-
This is "All Fronts Propaganda"I know several of the philosophers who contributed papers to this site.
One thing worth mentioning is that they were paid. Professional philosophers, many with excellent reputations, have been hired to be a part of the PR aparatus of the movie industry. That's not to say that what they wrote was stupid (and if you read the papers, most mention--delicately--that the movie had some serious coherency problems). But their work is supposed to be the seed of a certain new source of buzz behind the movie.
The idea is that you go into the sequel expecting something really deep to happen. (It doesn't. I saw the sequel on opening night with 4 Ph.D's in philosophy who thought it was the worst movie since Highlander 2.)
It's a clever marketing strategy, because now a "hip" site like this one is presenting all this as buzz, when in reality it's a bit like paying people to clap at a talk to make the speaker look more interesting than he is.
I'm sure that the payouts to the philosophers cost about the same as 60 seconds of pointless chase scene footage, and with everyone biting the hook, it was apparently money well spent.
But don't mistake this for what it isn't: philosophers hate Matrix Reloaded, and giggle about the many conceptual gaffes in M1.

Artificial Intelligence, Husserl and other writing
The Matrix Web site has a number of papers written by philosophers, theologians, scientists and others. Of those I've read so far, the one I find most interesting is The Brave New World of the Matrix which draws upon Husserlian phenomenology to discuss the philopsophy of AI. It sounds boring but it's not. If you like that you might want to go on to read some Martin Heidegger.
Unbelieveable to me is that a commercial enterprise (Warner Brothers) is making thinking and philosophy cool again through one of its franchises. I never thought I'd hear about Husserl and Heidegger after I graduated, least of all on a Hollywood-produced movie by the likes of Joel Silver.

Check out Whatisthematrix.com
There is new material on there, and I was just wondering if anyone knew how to decipher this. I saw the movie, but I can't tell what they mean by this: (UPDATE: I just copied and pasted the below text from this link, and I realized that half of the hex code below is black text on a black background, and only shows up if you highlight it in your browser or copy and paste like I did. Check it out for yourself, I'm dying to know what the hell it means.
THE MATRIX: RELOADED covers a lot of ground. The future brings sections on visual effects, the ships, the creatures, the stunts, and much more. All things evolve. For those that understand this, perhaps the following will be understood.

For the above hex, you will need a fairly fast computer and graphics card. An appreciation of the Neb is not a prerequisite (but it helps).
More shortly.

On TV...
On one of those TV trash programs Celebrity Justice that aired yesterday (nothing on the site about it though...) they painted a slightly different story.
According to them originally Tobey McGuire was cast in the role of SpiderMan but was going to be dropped because he was making demands that related to scheduling trying to make them work around his schedule because of his back.
When he started making these demands producers said fine we have Jake Gyllenhaal in our back pocket so tell Tobey to take a hike. Tobey basically crawled back and is now SpiderMan but had to agree to certain things including signing an agreement that he would be financially penalized if he was unable to fill his role as SpiderMan and also had to undergo a medical exam. -

You can find interesting articles about The Matrix's philosophic and religious background right on the official site. Enjoy.

The SAME CARTOONS as we saw!!
I don't know how everybody can complain about the cartoons being any better when we were kids. Haven't you tuned in lately?
They are the SAME CARTOONS!!
- He Man
- GI Joe
- Transformers
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
- Care Bears
- Scooby Doo
- Voltron (aka Power Rangers)
Plus if you count Batman, Superman and The Justice League, they are all FAR better than the old Super Friends and the crappy live action Batman.
We are just going to have to keep importing our cartoons from Japan.
Kids a few years ago were all Pokemon freaks anyways, and now those kids have graduated to be Yu-Gi-Oh freaks.
Not to mention all of the Pokemon clones: Digimon, Food-o-mon??(That food wars one)
And if you want life lessons and good/evil shows, check out Ultimate Muscle.
As for me and my house, we watch Static Shock -
What about the last visit to Mars?
Didn't Val Kilmer et al. visit Mars just a few years ago? As I recall, they found that Mars has a breathable atmosphere and little bug thingies living there. Why don't we explore other uncharted areas, like the Gamma quadrant? -

Some Thoughts on the soft-sci-fi "power thing"
After reading a particular article in the Matrix philosophy section, I've gotten a little less annoyed with the bio-electric power, because they put more emphasis on telling a story and seeding discussion. --although I still occasionally get knee-jerk desires to yell out, "OMG that's so BS," at the "bioelectric" energy plot-hole/saver(?). One possiblity: The machines, following the "essence of the second renaissance", chose to "bless all forms of intelligence" and preserve humanity for ethical[?] reasons and subsequently did something useful with the human "flesh" the machines had demanded from the people at the United Nations HQ(?) --sounds like a Computer Lifeform's Burden argued for by the human rights faction of the artificial intelligence collective =D[1]
Maybe he film producers are well aware that people don't generate power, but they're trying to show that people are always getting used for power today (politically) and in the future (elecrically [electronically]?) Human-brains-as-computing-source plot device wasn't used, emphasizing that the machines could do all the processing "needed", relegating humans to --exceedingly-- menial power generating duties, a form of role reversal showing how far man had fallen from their earlier thought-of-as superior position.
After all, having "long studied man's, simple, protein based based" bodies, the machines could have engineered blocks of cancer-like bioelectric flesh superior in most ways to the human-power-cells for their power duties because the blocks reproduce, come in adjustable shapes, and are very very unlikely to rebel [al la Neo]
;) ) But, they'd be boring, they'd kill the "save the enslaved masses" plot, and wouldn't be as ironic *heh*

Sound and Vision
I have not tried working in a white noise space, but it's a good idea if you want to implement acoustic privacy. I remember some research on outdoor spaces that showed people in areas with waterfalls did not necessarily pay attention to the waterfall itself - the attraction was the insulation from the street noise. You'd have to tinker with the sound level and speaker placement so people didn't find themselves in a Cone of Silence. I'd try a grid of small, unobtrusive speakers. Try to use materials and decorations with good acoustic properties (large plants, cieling tiles, fabric banners, etc).
Cube farms can totally suck the life out if you if they are visually unattractive and bland. You can make spaces more interesting using quirky tricks - use an old computer (white noise generator?), LCD projector, and theater blinders to put a dynamic mural on the wall without blinding half your staff. Corkboard or painted homasote walls also allow rapid customization as well as enhance sound dampening. -
The Butcher Boy
The Butcher Boy without a doubt has to be my all time favorite, relatively unknown movie.
It revolves around a boy named Francy Brady (Anti-hero?) who grows up in a home with a mother who constantly tries to commit suicide and a father who drinks like a fish.
He has one friend throughout the whole movie, and his arch nemisis's (the nugents) constantly remind him that he is low class trash. The best part in the movie is when Francy starts having delusions of the Virgin Mary (played by Sinade O'Conner) They start out completely fake as a way to gain attention at the catholic orphanage he's put in, but they eventually evolve into full on delusions in which Francy starts to have really weird conversations.
Good movie, gotta rent it sometime. -
