Re:"The Warden"
Actually if you start the game with the normal exe, the warden thing doesn't even come up.
Warden is the small program that only runs when WoW.exe is running. No bypassing that. The launcher (that loads when you use the default shortcut) is a cheatware scanner in addition to Warden. http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/misc/launcher.html seems to say that the Blizzard Launcher only notifies the user if you have cheatware. If you disregard the warnings and go ahead and start the game, then it's Warden's job to tell Blizzard that you're cheating and it won't be pretty.
So I'm not exactly sure what you meant... if I misunderstood and corrected with something you already knew, then my apologies, heh.
But I must say: More power to Blizzard for banning all those crazy level 1's with names comprised entirely of consonants that spam-whispered me offers to buy gold and disrupted my roleplaying. Booyah! (...and heck, even if they didn't get 'em all, at least they're trying.) -
Re:also know as the PvP whiners rejoice patch
^^^ Paladin player, obviously?
The above post should be taken with a grain of salt, however, since apparently he's more concerned with whining than actually stating facts accurately.
I play a Hunter, so that's the only class I can speak to. His comments about Hunter pets are flat-out wrong. PET SPEEDS are made equivalent, but pet attack speed, damage, and secondary attack modes remain quite different (Broken Tooth remains 1.0 attack speed, Ursius 2.30 attack speed). Further pets remain differentiated by what skills they can learn, and the effects of these skills. So there is still a great deal of gameplay in the hunter's pet choice.
Patch notes here: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/patchnotes/patchnot es.html
Further, I know a lot of warlocks that are delighted with some of the changes, so it's not entirely gloom and doom.
Look, Blizzard doesn't do anything 100% perfect, few of us do. But by and large this patch is what it's meant to be, a tweaking of gameplay with some additional content. That's pretty much it. -

Re:Problem with this theory: Starting AreaThere are unused zones around the world. The Blood Elf zones, for instance, will be appearing in the pair of unused zones north of Eastern Plaguelands.
Other unused zones exist, too:
- Eastern Kingdoms
- The zone east of Loch Modan and Wetlands.
- The zone south of Badlands, north of Redridge, and east of Burning Steppes.
- The zone south of Dun Morough, north of Elwynn Forest, and west of Burning Steppes.
- Gilneas, the zone south of Silverpine Forest.
- Kalimdor
- Mount Hyjal, east of Felwood, south and west of Wintersping, and north of Ashenvale.
- Other
- The island continent of Undermine, as pictured in the WoW Collector's Edition Art book.
- One of the other islands pictured on the WoW World Map. As far as I can tell, Undermine is one of the two southern ones, but there's also an island cluster to the far north.
- Eastern Kingdoms

Problem with this theory: Starting AreaThere's one problem that sticks out with the theory of Draenei as the new Alliance race: Where will the Draanei's starting area be? Beyond the Dark Portal? I don't think so! Blizzard said some time ago that opening the Dark Portal will be a World Event. This means that no one on a specific server can go through it until the World Event is completed on that server.
Another World Event that will be appearing in WoW soon is The Gates of Ahn'Qiraj.
I'm sure there are other reasons that the Draenai wouldn't make sense as the new race, too.

This topic has revealed itself to be both highly debatable and exciting, and we're definitely pleased to see so much interest surrounding this particular future addition to the game. With that being said, we wanted to take this time to remind everyone that we have not provided any information or made any announcements concerning the new Alliance race to any Web sites, magazines, or other media sources. While we don't want to discourage you from continuing your discussions on this matter, we ask that you keep that bit of information in mind. When we're ready to announce the new race, we'll eagerly share as much information as we can with everyone on our community site." -

Re:More information on the FFXI expantion
you know I play both FFXI and WoW and to me the cartoonish stuff of WoW looks worse than FFXI.
FFXI screenshot vs WoW screenshot
I rest my case. I suppose if you're color blind, FFXI might look better, but anyone who actually sees color will notice that FFXI's world is all done in what looks like watercolor - it's all washed out. (Not surprisingly, it's really hard to see that in the screenshots Squeenix posted, but the areas all look the same. Including your precious CoP areas, they looked just like existing areas.)
As a expantion CoP was excellent, but you had to be a good player which was the best part.
Um, no. When COP came out, it was nearly impossible to beat the first mission. They've since heavily nerfed it. When the expansion was released, it took an 18-man raid to get to the 6-man final boss. You also had to farm a rare drop from the harder monsters in the starting area with the raid. They proceeded to nerf the hell out of it in the following patches, so now it's doable by a single group of 6. But I didn't care by that point, because the infinitely superior WoW had come out by then.
I have a feeling your the same AC troll who always trolls these FFXI posts am I right? Well I proved you wrong the first 80 times you commented so why dont you go troll WoW players or something.
WoW just hit 5 million subscribers. FFXI is down to what, 300,000? I don't recall anyone ever managing to suggest FFXI has ever had any up sides, but I think the subscription numbers speak for themselves: FFXI is a dieing MMORPG, and WoW is exceeding all previous MMORPG subscription rates.
The numbers don't lie. No one I know who played FFXI is willing to play it ever again, if for no other reason than the economy has been totally destroyed and, unlike Blizzard, Squeenix refuses to create new servers to allow people to start in a new world without a destroyed economy. There is quite literally nothing good in FFXI, I can't name a single feature of that game I'd ever like to see repeated. The only reason - and I do mean ONLY reason - anyone is willing to play that crime against gaming is because of the name "Final Fantasy" - otherwise, no one would ever play it. Admit it: that's the only reason you play it. -
Re:All they asked for...
You can set up a completely separate passport account for your XBox if you want. Also, AFAIK, you had to do this with your original XBox as well. Also, it has other side benefits, like allowing you to post on online forums with your gametag, and being able to show off your gamercard to others. This really isn't any different than how it is in the WoW forums, where you post with your in-game handle and stats.

Re:The game did it.
I can quite honestly say that in some cases the game DOES do it. I have been a long time player of World of Warcraft, playing since the private beta up until now and to be frank I've come to realize how incredibly unhealthily it has been designed, to create an addiction in its player.
Blizzard set out to create a game with a system of rewards that benefits those who put in the most time, not those who are most skillful. The net result of this is that to achieve anything worthwhile you have to put in hundreds of play hours. If you want to put this into perspective then ask an average level 60 player who has been here since the beginning how much time they have spent on one character; There is an uptime command /played which tells you how many days/hours/minutes you've spent on a given character and mine currently reads 30+ days for one character. That's not to mention the 14+ days on another. I'm not a particularly hardcore player either, and only have one level 60 character. Other people have 2 or 3 level 60s, if an average player takes between 16-20 days to reach level 60 then that's up to and probably 60 days of their life they've spent playing WoW. Now WoW was released in November 2004, so in a year of peoples life they could have spent 60 of those days playing a computer game. I don't mean a couple of hours every day for 60 days, I mean literally 60 days. This isn't by any means abnormal for WoW gamers.
MMO games are harmful in my opinion. They have a massive problem in the form of creating new and exciting content for an audience that furiously devours it, so what they do is create content that is based on grinding to succeed. Grinding means to do a repetative task hundreds, maybe thousands of times till you gain enough experience/reputation to get your reward. The worst case of this in WoW are the Player Vs Player Battlegrounds. There is a ranking system with 14 levels, the 14th being the hardest to get. To be able to reach the 14 and become grand marshal or high warlord depending on your faction, you need to play every day of the week, for upwards of 12 hours a day, in co-operation with team-mates who allow you to attain rank by forgoing rank theirselves. I have personally experienced many burnt out friends who have have mini-nervous breakdowns trying to attain a certain rank on PvP. The funny thing is that if you stop grinding for rank then your current rank decays, so if you decide to give yourself a break then you lose all the work you've already done. An excellent explanation of WoW pvp grinding and why it's so unhealthy can be read here.
Blizzard have created a game with the intent of people becoming addicted to it. They reward you for your addiction, and punish you if you are too 'casual'. It's very amusing to see the stigma attached to being a 'casual' WoW player, whenever they voice their opinion on anything they are very quickly drowned out in a chorus of 14 year old boys telling them to "stfu learn2play n00b". This is encouraged by Blizzard by creating content that only appeals to hardcore players and reinforces divides. Blizz want these divides though as they depend on the hardcore players for their revenue, because they know however badly they treat them nothing they do will make these players cancel their accounts, to the point where someone might get their account banned and simply start a new one, even though they have to begin from square 1 again.
When a developer sets out to make a game that is addictive and unhealthy as WoW then thats prett bad, but when there is no or little expression of concern from the industry watchdogs then that is something truly shocking. I simply don't understand. -
Re:Pah!
I wish people would stop stereotyping all people from Alabama as redneck, uneducated, slackjaw hicks. I am a male in my mid-20s, a democrat, have a college degree in both computer science and mathematics from the University of Alabama (currently #104 of the 1400 in the most widely referenced list. I live in Huntsville, a city of more than 160,000 residents speaking over 100 languages, home of Redstone Arsenal, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, and the 2nd largest research park in the United States (4th in the world). I work for NASA at MSFC making an upper-middleclass living, live in the suburb of Providence and drive an Audi, not a tractor. I don't follow any type of sports, run FreeBSD on one of the many computers at home, listen to music on my iPod while getting my MMORPG fix via EDGE on my widescreen Powerbook while drinking overpriced coffee.
Are there people in the state that fit your stereotypical remarks? You bet. Can you honestly say that there are no people in your state that you are embarassed by? Of course you can't. So the next time you make your uninformed, stereotypical remarks - remember the nut doesn't fall far from the tree. -
Re:A time bomb for the game industry?
Funnily enough, just this week Blizzard announced a new Parental Access Control for WoW. Little Johnny's parents can now set particular times and dates when he's allowed to access his WoW account, and when he isn't. It's doubtful many parents will actually use it (or how many kids won't be able to guess their parents' password), but at least the adding of this functionality shows Blizzard is listening.
Would it have helped in this situation? Probably not, but it's a step in the right direction. -
Re:safety warnings
They just recently added Parental Controls to the game.
Personally, I wouldn't mind in the least if there were no minors in the game world at all. -
Brother Leo Said It Best
Leo Laporte mentioned recently on the excellent podcast TWIT (This Week In Tech) in extended discussion with his old chronies from when TechTV's ScreenSavers was in its hayday (in otherwords before G4 TV bought it, moved it from the Bay area, replaced everyone who wasn't telegenic with pretty faces staring stiff and stupid into the camera - in short made it suck donkey ass) observed that Blizzzard's World of Warcraft redered one "Only _marginally_ functional as an adult"
A fact to which my level 31 Mage can readily attest. Apparently Leo has a level *blah* Paladin in that game.
Also, of note in that same podcast it was mentioned that there are "Latin American sweatshops" where US citizens pay those less of the less fortunate nations to spend the hours on end it takes to "level up" their character so that when they log in "voila"! They can stomp around the land of Azeroth as a Level 60 fill in the blank. Now, I may be an addict, but where the hell is the fun in that? Also, as in other games is the amazing fact that people are selling characters, equipment and "gold" for umtpeen _hundreds_ to a _thousand_ or more real US 'Mercian DOLLARS!
The Cyberworld never ceases to shock and amaze... -

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/basics/questba sics.html
Nope. All it means is that they *generally* will be around your level. If the boss is harder, it's likely that any other parts of the quest will be less intensive. They balance enemy level, travel time, and other factors into the difficulty rating.
"Except the boss-ish mob that was the target of the quest was orange-rated! (I.e. at least 3 levels above me.) So I lodged a ticket.
The response? 'Working as intended'. Obviously an error, but working as intended."
It's not an error, and the quest IS working as intended. -
Re:Sometimes I wished that we were limited here to
the pvp rank system doesn't work in such a way as normal RPGs do. It sets the mantra of RPGs that whenever you do something good with your char it gets some benefit. Here the rank system is capped and it doesn't matter if you play for 12 years @ 2 hours a day. If someone can play 3 hours a day he'll keep your rank lower because you don't have as much honor as he does. It is a horrible system and it's pissing people off. FYI- a PSX emulator for OS X
PCSX
Works well, last time I checked...
I actually don't feel that much weakness with Mac gaming (other than the occasional Half-Life 2 class game), then again, I play a lot of WoW and Desert Combat, both of which are excellent and fun games (the latter actually a high-quality mod of Battlefield 1942) with lots of replayability, so I suppose that's all I need.
I was very frustrated at the incidents you cite, though. The Halo one was just awful. -
Re:Oh for pitty's sake.
If you actually read the EULA, you can send back your game (as long as you haven't used the account key to create an account, in which case you would have acceded to the TOS anyway) directly to Blizzard for a full refund. You also agree that Blizzard can change the EULA or TOS at will, as long as they notify you (they make you agree to the TOS and EULA every time they patch the game, whether the agreement is updated or not, and the copy of the agreement on your computer only gets updated through the patch process, ensuring that you will be notified before the next time you play the game).
As for losing value in your purchase once you start using it, hell, once you drive a new car off the lot you can't expect to get your money back (excepting the lemon law, if your state has it). Why should WoW be any different? If you can even claim damages (which I suspect you can't) for canceling your contract early, it would be limited to the prorated amount of the unused subscription fee. It wouldn't invalidate the entire contract and thus allow you to cheat.
Like I said, no coercion. -
Re:Spilt milk, but make some cheese from it
OK, you read the licensing agreement and tell me where it says they are monitoring your system for cheats. The closest is maybe from the linked Terms of Use where it says
6. Consequences of Violating the Blizzard Entertainment Code of Conduct.
Blizzard Entertainment may, in its sole and absolute discretion, take whatever action it deems necessary to preserve the integrity of World of Warcraft.
Other than that, and their statements about automatically upgrading the game, I'm at a loss. AFAICT they never state that their software is doing any of the things mentioned in the article. -
Re:By the time you get to the EULA, it's too late.
So go read the EULA on their website before you buy the game.
Here's the link: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/legal/eula.html
There, I saved you $50. -
Re:ummm..ok
Obscuring what? From what I'm reading from other posters this is part of the EULA. What's the problem?
Take a look here. Can you show me where it describes anything resembling what they're doing? I read through the headings of the Terms of Use also, and saw nothing directly relavent. The closest is
7. Patches and Updates. Licensor may deploy or provide patches, updates and modifications to the Game that must be installed for the user to continue to play the Game. Licensor may update the Game remotely, including, without limitation, the Game Client residing on the user's machine, without knowledge or consent of the user, and you hereby grant to Licensor your consent to deploy and apply such patches, updates and modifications to the Game.
I see references to patching/upgrading the game, not gathering information to check for cheats. Anyone else see something more to the point? Otherwise I'll stick to my previous statement. -
Re:Spilt milk, but make some cheese from it
Current EULA available at:
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/legal/eula.html
In its entirety. A quick read. Easy to copy and paste into a word processor for your records. Easy to see if it has changed. If they ask you to agree to the EULA again, open up a new browser window if a bunch of little screens is a pain.
The problem is not with the EULA, in this case. The problem is that people do not understand that they are entering into a legal contract, and how serious the implications are. At my business, I go over contracts with a fine-tooth comb. Why would I do any less at home?
One problem I have with the EULA is that you do not have to certify that you are the owner of the computer, or that you are authorized to make decisions on behalf of the owner. Once this happens (and it will, should this go far in the courts in the US) then WoW will lose business if they want to implement a EULA allowing something like this. The answer? Don't have terms in the license that require the consent of the owner of the computer. Do "Warden-like" activities server-side. -

The rules are clearly stated...This could all have been avoided if he'd read the Getting Started guide which has a clearly marked link to the naming policy, wherein it states:
Titles
Fantasy titles should be earned through the mechanics of the game, and should not be recreated through character naming. This category includes names which:
* Consist of any title prefix attached to a character's name be it fantasy-based or not (i.e. Kingmike, Presidentsanchez)
I read this myself a while back, and as soon as I saw the title of this article and who the author was, I correctly guessed the issue. -
Let's see if my "online name" stays intact....Firstly, to everybody claiming that "Slashdot is a blog and Taco can post whatever he wants on it":
Slashdot stopped being Taco's personal blog when VA Software bought it and employed him. Oh, and let's not forget the advertisements, slashvertisements and the subscription sales. This makes slashdot a BUSINESS VENTURE (granted a very poorly-run one, if VA's stock is any indication (it's lower in value than SCO's!)), and somebody's personal blog no longer. To paraphrase a previous poster: FoxNews may be Rupert Murdoch's property, but does that make it alright for him to have his "i didnt read the speed limit sign, how dare they give me a speeding ticket" story read as headline news by the anchors? Taco's bad experience belongs on his journal, because that's what the journals are for. He's abusing his ability as a site editor to put this on the front page. This would be relevant to gaming if it were a well thought out article about online identity, instead of somebody whinging that they had to change their name in WoW because they didn't take the time to read the rules of the game. I've seen Taco point others to Slashdot's years out of date FAQ, so now I'll take the time to point him to one: Part 3, Section A, Subsection 13 (naming conventions) AND I QUOTE (though the emphasis is mine alone):
In particular, you may not use any name...
13. That incorporates titles. For purposes of this subsection, "titles" shall include without limitation 'rank' titles (e.g. , "CorporalTed," or "GeneralVlad"), monarchistic or fantasy titles (e.g., "KingMike", "LordSanchez"), and religious titles (e.g., "ThePope," or "Reverend Al").Now, if you're going to join a service that you must pay a monthly fee to use, that you're going to put in all sorts of time over, then don't you think it would behoove one to read the fucking rules of the service? it's pretty clear that Taco was breaking the rules, so what exactly does he expect to happen? Does he expect to get an exception just because he's That Guy Who Makes Slashdot Run? If it took him "dozens of inquiries to get that explained" then he needs to learn to read the rules of the game before he plays. I don't play Wow, and it took me about 10 seconds to find the relevant rules page and its section regarding names. It's really not that hard.
This is a non-story, the only reason it's on the front page is because of Taco's abuse of power. To be fair, at least it's something fresh and recent instead of the usual "news items" (or duplicate posts) that showed up on the BoingBoing RSS feed weeks ago...
-
Yes, and?"I'm told that since the game has an internal honor system with titles, my name is not allowed. Never mind the fact that 'Cmdr' is not one of their titles."
As it happens "Commander" is one of their titles, and a pretty high one at that. "Cmdr" is not only a string of consonants which makes native speakers of Slovenian give up all hope of pronouncing it, it is very similar to an in-game rank.
You violated the naming policy. It is unpronounceable, contains a masked title, and is even a clear reference to a well known person, character, place or icon.
You agreed to these rules before you ever created the character "Cmdrtaco" and broke all of them. What exactly is the lesson that needs to be learned here?

Warcraft, Starcraft... even Grim Fandango
There's got to be better game material out there for a movie. I personally think that Warcraft or Starcraft could each make a fantastic special effects film... I always loved watching the cut-scenes in the game. Why HALO? While DOOM might end up being a turkey, there is good video game material out there. I would love for Tim Burton to make the LucasArts title Grim Fandango into a film... it would certainly be entertaining.

Well in the next patch alone it appears they will be releasing this huge area with 120 new items and tons of new quests in an all new area, and additionally they are releasing this new battleground
And as for the story, aside from Snood this is the only game I play, as it offers a continuing experiance and since I pay for it, and most other games are not nearly as fun/addictive why would I spend more money and time on another game. And just for reference I've only been playing for 4 month so it may get old eventually. -

I was at the launch
And it was insane. I was one of the first people in the door because one of my rugby teammates had set up camp near the front of the line. When three more of us showed up to join him no one really said anything. There were seriously a ton of people though. The line wrapped all the way around the store and out into the parking lot twice, and then snaked down the road into a residential area. The doors opened at midnight, and I heard some people didn't get in until four or five in the morning.
The whole thing was more than worth it though. I have a Collector's Edition box signed by the whole dev team, and the night was a lot of fun in and of itself talking to people about what servers they were going to be on and what classes they were going to play and whatnot. There was also a lot of chat about whether or not they were going to run out of games (which they did), and there was even a Tauren walking around trying to get people to make the best warcry.
If you want to see some pics from the launch, check out Blizzard's report on the launch here. -

Re:I almost agree with you.I want to start my own set of free servers only for friends and friends of friends invitation only. Should I be allowed to create a server side application that Blizzard's WoW client can connect to and invite my friends to play?
Boy that'd be nice... that's also what this was really about. Blizzard didn't want anyone making a WoW version of bnetd so they nipped it in the bud before it could even start. They also have several lines in their EULA about not making your own server. You do read these things, don't you? Here's what you should pay attention to:
4. Responsibilities of End User.
B. You agree that you shall not, under any circumstances,

I've paid for the client. I'm just not using their monthly service anymore.
You should know better than that. You did not buy anything but a box with shiny discs in them. The software is 0wned by Blizzard and not you.3. Ownership.

My reply that I finally got around to writing:
Dear sirs or madams:
This is, for lack of a better phrase, complete bullshit.
I find it flat out offensive that you can ban me for a mundane thing like "Fukinshaman" while cheating, exploiting, instance cascading, and terrain bypasses continue to go unpunished by your GM team. It is blatant two-faced favoritism.
First, "Fukinshaman" was banned for:
Offense: Naming Violation: Obscene/Vulgar
This category includes both clear and masked names which:
. Are inappropriate references to human anatomy or bodily functions
. Are pornographic in nature
This is wrong. Fukinshaman has nothing to do with the act of fucking, the act of sex, the act of intercourse, the act of sticking a penis into a vagina, or any other bodily or pornographic function. It is a merely a testament to your design team's inability to balance a class that is so blatantly overpowered. It is an exclamatory remark. It has nothing to do with the offense listed. The ban should be lifted on basic principle. Police can't just write tickets for crimes that never happened and, in my opinion, your GM staff (as incompetent and unhelpful as they are) should be held to the same standards.
My guild and I have brought in more customers to WoW than any other company or organization that you aren't paying. The fact that you would turn on your customers that contribute to the community like this while you leave others who have more serious offenses untouched speaks a great deal about why your customer service is rated as horrible.
I speak for the entire WoW community when I say your customer service is unsatisfactory, horrendous, incompetent, and more corrupt than a Bangkok prostitution ring.
Please don't message me with insulting and condescending hypocritical crap like "The bottom line is that we want World of Warcraft to be a fun and safe environment for all players." This is not your bottom line otherwise you'd be dealing with the other exploiters instead of banning people over things that are slightly offensive.
Sincerely,
Abduhl
