Wonders of the GIF.
In addition to flashing banner ads and stylish web sites, the Graphical Interchange Format has brough us another important wonder.
Imagine if we never had such a format. Would YTMND even be possible? We can only speculate, but I, for one, would like to thank Unisys for this valuable contribution. Afterall, 361,984—and growing—YTMND sites can't be wrong!

Re:Attach rate?
Those little indy puzzle games don't replace boxed games, they supplement them.
Except after reading about the broken mess that is modern Tetris (try ridin' spinners), wouldn't a lot of people prefer, say, Lockjaw?
Kind of like Geometry Wars for the Xbox360, or Nintendo's Virtual console.
Except Microsoft gets a cut of every game sold through Xbox Live Arcade, and likewise Nintendo with Virtual Console.

Myself, I beat Tetris in about an hour
;-)Yeah, because they make modern Tetris too damn easy. But did it really take you an hour to get 200 lines?

Accusations of fanboyism
Another article that mentions Nintendo products might have angered Sony fanboys who complain about the excess of positive coverage that Zonk has been giving to Nintendo.

Re:Interesting test case...Most if not all of the "hype" on the Internet for Snakes on a Plane appeared to be making fun of the movie itself. I don't know how that would be considered positive. I think the situation that the PS3 is in now is similar to that of Snakes on a Plane as there are groups that enjoy ripping on Sony's various blunders (if you didn't already notice from reading Slashdot.)

Tighten up the grahphix
We just beat level three, we need to tighten up the graphix a lil bit.

Infinite spin
I've barely touched any of the single player modes because I have so much fun in the online matches.
Don't feed me any of that. I know the real reason you haven't touched Tetris DS single player: infinite spin.
-
What they need is tighter graphics!!!
All this talk about game design schools, etc. reminded me of this funny commercial:
http://tightgraphs.ytmnd.com/
Reality is that it is not what you know, but who you know. Not only do you need skill to be successful in the industry but know those that are already in that can help you get in, but only if you're worthy enough.
My buddy got his job as a level designer without going to school whatsoever. I mean he's a highschool graduate, went to Devry, dropped out of there cuz he didn't like it - then attended a local community college. All while doing that he's been teaching himself level editing with the unreal engine and got a job with an indie company and now they are working on a 360videogame. He's been with them for over 2 years now and at first he worked for free because it was an independent company with no money coming in, and now he makes $50K/year salary thru the same company. His skill, determination, and talking to people in the unrealEd scene got him this gig and look where he's at now. -

There are, of course, different levels of blockage
I think some employees are willing to put up with a certain, reasonable level of blockage. Porn sites are a no brainer example of this. My office filter doesn't block out
/. BUT blocks out the Games section, in addition to every URL with 'games' in it.
It's really quite understandable. You're using a company paid computer, on a company paid pipe, on company paid time. It's their right to make the rules on internet usage.
Also, most would probably like a system where they can contest certain websites. On Monday, I was mortified to find that Wikipedia had been blocked. Category: Porn (Thats what they say about YTMND too). It would seem that I was not the only one who got annoyed by this, as we had it back the next day.
Now, I have to get back to work... -
Tetris DS is just as broken
The following interaction between infinite spin and the scoring system was recently discovered on tetrisconcept.com: Go into Tetris DS and start a standard game. Place any tetromino except O over a flat surface. Hold down, and before the tetromino locks, rapidly press B A B A B A. Watch the score go up. The only time infinite spin is turned off is when you play multiplayer, in which case the tetromino locks after a preset number of seconds.

Don't believe what you read....
First I would like to say that I am neutral when it comes to what system will dominate this new "next gen" war. While I believe it is possible for the PS3 to do well, this study is perhaps negligent to the current state of the PS3 and the actions Sony is doing.
First and foremost the PS3 and the Wii have to compete against the already established base that Microsoft's Xbox 360 has. Since the 360 has a year behind them, it will be difficult for either to convince players to get their system. However, Microsoft has pretty much conceded that the Nintendo Wii may be the winner based on their comments.
Secondly, the study does not take into account the state of the PS3. In my opinion, the PS3 maybe a still birth based on all that has been published about it. The cost of the system, the Cell Processor not matching up to it's alleged power, the inability to play used games, and the attempt to push the Blu Ray technology all do not paint a very optimistic picture for the PS3. That is not to say however that the Wii is perfect. Nintendo is notorious for making promises but failing to deliver too. Still, Sony has a lot of problems for the PS3 and no attempt has been made to fix them it seems.
Sony also has a major attitude problem as well. Their own ego has blocked their ability to remember that the PS3 has the same hallmarks as another system. Remember the Neo Geo, Sony? The Neo Geo was a powerhouse and it was the same song and dance the PS3 is trying to do. I guess Sony forgot the ending of this story. Nobody was willing to spend $700 for a system then fork over $200 for a game. Kas's claim is that you are getting a lot for what you pay for. Considering that the Wii lets you play old school games for download, an online service with Wi Fi connections for FREE, and has many great starting titles being only a fraction of what the PS3 will cost, I think you are getting more there instead. This is of course if Nintendo comes through this time...
I know I said in a previous posting that Sony has forgotten what has got them this far. That is the GAME PLAYER. This attempt to push technology but deliver subpar games with a hefty price tag will do the system in quickly. Just because they did well with the PSX and got lucky with the PS2 WILL NOT guarantee them success with the PS3. If all they got for the PS3 so far is "Ridge Racer" then they may as well abort this and try again from square one. To me, Sony is burning gamers and developers with poor design tools and expects everybody to take it. Come 2011, I strongly believe that the PS3 will be called "Neo Geo 2006". I think this site says it all: http://luthorownsplanes.ytmnd.com/

You're the inspiration!
Who needs posters? In memoriam James Doohan. The longest surviving "Red Shirt" on the USS Enterprise, his "Scotty" set the standard for generations of geeks and engineers. Working with the latest future technologies, often experimental, under a demanding boss for whom FTL travel, teleporters, galactic communications and more firepower than all of 20th Century Earth combined weren't enough to cakewalk through missions on any given week, Scotty's role model has influenced millions of 20th Century predecessors. His ingenuity, fortitude, and sense of humor while telling the boss that his demands are insane, but doable, even under excruciating time pressure floating around a newly discovered dimension, are an inspiration to us all. Mr. Doohan, in your new journey, go as boldly as you led us in all your merely astral journeys on our televisions, and in our imaginations.
Anyway, isn't this a 4chan fad? What's next, posting YTMND sites on Slashdot's front page?

Flash is too expensive for hobbyists
I see a lot of the AJAX examples and wonder why the authors haven't just used Flash for the job.
Because they learned AJAX as a hobby when they didn't have $699.95 plus tax to throw away for a copy of Macromedia Flash.

Re:Old tech vs newFile formats are one thing, but you mentioned the laserdisc there.
Is that a problem with the format, or has the laserdisc just melted into nothing?
Folks oft bring up the problem of 'disc rot' when Ask Slashdot cycles round to its 'what's a good backup solution' season, (although I've never personally observed it, my discs are all swank-tastic. JINX! I know!), but eventually this stuff is going to be destroyed somehow.
Remember that bit in The Time Machine where the books crumble to dust? Unless we invent our own 'spinning rings', or holographic guy-with-attitude, then it's all for naught.
(Whether the human existence would all be for naught if our past is lost to time is philosophical matter, (or possibly an ecumeical matter)
