"Drag" and "drop UMD" are Sony inventions
What the hell happened to drag and drop UMD?
Doesn't Sony have a patent on load times that drag and dropping UMDs? If not, doesn't the U.S. Government have a patent from back in the 1940s on dropping double-U-M-Ds?

Re:CAPTCHAs done differently
You can see it here.
The demo page is 404.
The article outlines the technical implementation, it's advantages and disadvantages
I find the disadvantages significant. Given the readership of Slashdot, how does it handle users who aren't on operating systems published by Microsoft or Apple? Why would anybody choose to lock them out on purpose? And how does it handle web sites whose operators can't afford $700 for a copy of Macromedia Flash to make a custom secure container?

Piratebay
So it seems that Swedish law would be on Thepiratebay's side? It seems from reading that Swedish law frowns upon them raiding and taking down non offending sites... http://youareapiratebay.ytmnd.com/

Warning: incoming Piss Three.
I still think Wii is a stupid name. You can't change the fact that "wee" can mean pee.
Neither can Sony change the fact that urine is called piss too (PS2). The problem with the names in this generation is that they all rhyme.
The "Nintendo Go" name that was rumored a while ago sounds better than Revolution and Wii to me.
"Nintendo Go" sounds like it would be the name of a handheld.

COOOOOOONNNNN!
All the TPM chip *really* does is allow the real owner of the computer to be different from the physical possessor of the computer. It's not a big deal as long as you're aware of it.
Until the proprietary-entertainment industry manages to social-engineer the TPM master keys out of its customers. "If you don't let us con you, you don't get our movies."

Melee is known for head swaps
Why get a character who would play just like Samus?
Why get a Falco who would play just like Fox, or Roy like Marth, or Pichu like Pikachu, or Guckertdorf like a slow Captain Falcon? Why get a Dr. Mario who would play like the incarnation from before he finished med school, or a Link who hasn't finished elementary school? Heck, why get a Ryu who would play just like Ken? Padding the select screen with head swaps is an accepted practice in Super Smash Bros. and many other fighting franchises.

Because Vista is taken
I know people who think the name of a cow is better than something meaning a broad view (Longhorn vs Vista.)
That's because Vista is taken, multiple times. For instance, the electronic records application used by the US Department of Veterans Affairs' hospital network is called VistA. But then it could be argued that Wii is taken too.

Re:How did I get up here goddammit?!Well, I feel obligated to post another ytmnd now that you've gone and done that.
Trouble is no matter how I do this I'm still going to look like the rabid fanboy that I really am...
So here's my fanboyish show of support (As above, there is embedded sound. But yes, otherwise it's work safe.)
In any case I want to take a moment to say that despite all the obvious and utterly stupid jokes we could make about this name and so on, you could do a lot worse. For instance... naming a line of women's shoes "incubus". Or any other of those little marketing mishaps. Like everything Nintendo does, they've gone a bit, well, out there with it, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Look at how much conversation the name alone has generated. This is the sort of name that will stick in your head. You will devote that much more thought to it, and it may have more pull than you give it credit for. Look at what happened with the DS in Japan. The thing is like the iPod is here. And there's a reason for that. This is the sort of trendy counterculture that people eat up. The name of the thing, the look of the thing, it's all incredibly sleek and designed to feel contemporary. If I stick that on top of my 17 year old 51 inch television screen, with its wood paneling and antiquated looking stereo speakers built onto either side of the display, I'm the one that's going to feel out of place not the console.

Re:Quicktime?
Hold a sharpie in your hand, bang it on the DVD, and shout "Arise, chicken, arise!"
Instructions from BillyWitchDoctor.com
(If it doesn't work, you may be holding the Sharpie upside down.) -
Uh, no.
Seems pretty redundant to me that I should have to pay the DVD playback royalty (we past costs on the the consumer, we're a business) to Nintendo regardless of whether or not I have 0 or 5 things that already play DVDs.
If the PS2 didn't play DVD out of the box, it'd be cheaper to make. The Xbox didn't play DVD out of the box because it was cheaper to do it that way.
Seriously, I can buy a progressive scan DVD player at Wal-mart better than the Nintendo Wii's will probably be for less than the price of a universal remote. Including it would be stupid. -

Author of the Article
Never fear, I is here. My name is The Plague.
Someone didn't bother reading my carefully prepared memo on commonly-used passwords. Now, then, as I so meticulously pointed out, the four most-used passwords are: love, sex, secret, and... god. So, would your holiness care to change her password?
Oh, wait, the article was by Eugene Spafford? I thought you said Belford. Nevermind.

Flash is expensive
It's called Flash
I don't have $700 for Macromedia Flash because I graduated in 2003, have been volunteering for a year, and am still looking for paying work. Other technologies have much cheaper entry costs for bloggers and other hobbyists. How do I make an SWF?

Super Mario World's keyhole sound
deepnote.mp3: No such file or directory (ENOENT)
I would plug in Super Mario World (either on cartridge or on an emulator), head to Donut Plains, grab the cape, fly up near the end of the stage, and stick the key in the hole. This causes the game to play a humorous sped up version of "Deep Note".

Revolution and NES controllers compared
The thing that worries me about this is that there was a similar controller available for the original NES.
Exactly. In addition to the tilt sensor and the A and B buttons used in the remote position, the Revolution controller has the same +Control Pad, a Button, b Button, Select Button, and Start Button as the NES.
