You need to download the official patch for System Shock 2:

You'll need the file shkpatch.exe, it fixes issues with Windows XP.
Also to install System Shock under XP you'll need to add
"-lgntforce" to the setup instruction e.g. -- if that doesn't work try it with "-ntforce"
d:\setup.exe -lgntforce (or d:\setup.exe -ntforce)
If you are getting lockups or having problems getting it to run, try these additional steps:
Add the line "safe_texture_manager", without quotes to the Shock.cfg file.
Start System Shock 2 and while still on the main menu, goto Task Manager.
Right-click on the Shock2.exe application and goto Set Affinity. Uncheck everything except for CPU 0.
Then go here - http://shtup.home.att.net/files/shtup_beta5.zip - and downlaod the graphics upgrade package which will increase polygon counts on models to make things look better.

SiN is a blood-soaked five hour jaunt you can download from Steam for about twenty bucks. At that price and that length, this Aeon Fluxian gorefest may just be a happy start for the age of episodic content.

I'll second that. Try the IL-2 demo at 3DGamers. Be very sure to try the naval strike missions for the Sturmovik itself, attacking convoys in a thunderstorm is not to be missed. The graphics on that have been updated at least once since then in the major overhaul that was Forgotten Battles. Online play through Hyperlobby does rock, with online campaign play supported and lots of servers up. A whole new sim (Battle of Britain) is due in 07 or 08 from the same developer, curent patchlevels are using a development BoB flight model.
If you love combat flying and don't have this yet, there's a Platinum edition alredy out for download and the first of 3 expansion packs due this year just came out (we're still due Manchuria '38 and a 1946 expansion). It's a good time to get into the game.
I'm just pimpin' it 'cause I want to see more people online. -

But if you just can't get enough of building bases and solving puzzles disguised as battlefields, you will probably get a kick out of WarGames.

WarGames: Defcon 1 (PS)

Summary: While WarGames: Defcon 1 may not have allowed me to relive one of my favorite films, it is still a solid game with a fairly good back story. Dabney Coleman may be nowhere to be found here, but once you get past this slight oversight (all games should feature at least one picture of Dabney), you'll discover a great shooter.

Favorite game logo, Quarantine.
The story behind Quarantine was that a chemical added to a city's water supply to make people docile had backfired due to bacteria already present in the reservoir. The city was now full of aggressive psychopaths, and was sealed off in order to "burn itself out".
You play a taxi driver in the quarantined city, splitting your time between carrying fare-paying passengers, running over pedestrians, launching missiles, and carving up other vehicles with the giant sawblade on your front bumper.
The logo was a stylized biohazard logo, with an inner circle to resemble a steering wheel, and a little asymmetric tail for the letter "Q". Find the logo at 3dgamers. -

Windows95 was released on August 24, 1995. I remember it well; I was working at Papyrus Design Group at the time (since acquired by Sierra, since acquired by Vivendi) and we were working on a Windows95-based version of IndyCar Racing II.

I remember at the time this game was released being impressed, both at the fact that they had taken Quake source and done so much with it (added a whole lot of features, it was probably a Quake 2-level engine or better now) and with the fact that at the time the traditional logic was to go license some expensive game engine, but that they probably got a good deal on the Quake engine.
But I also remember at the time reading about a lot a flak they recieved - their developers had followed a lot of those "tutorials" people had assembled on the Internet and through binary comparison, these sites figured out that Trainwreck had followed their tutorials. Trainwreck admitted to following the tutorials but did not admit to doing anything wrong. This led to the practice of designating that the tutorials were under GPL as well. Trainwreck could indeed have avoided the problems and saved money had they used the GPL for Laser Arena.
The one argument I can see for keeping the source closed is to limit or eliminate cheating. Granted, a budget title with limited popularity isn't really all that prone to cheating but even today the commercial release of Quake 3: Arena has Punkbuster to keep it "safe", which I imagine is outside the realm of most online game developers.
Any ideas on how to prevent this sort of thing in a GPL'd game?

This already exists at 3dgamers.com
The torrent links aren't very popular because gamers stop seeding as soon as they are done. So you end up with 1 seeder (the 3dgamers server) at 60K/s, instead of the 300K/s that you would get from the other download sites (even if you have to queue up).
A bigger issue is what happened to valve, last fall when millions of HL2 users were trying to activate (can't P2P that). -

I don't know what you're talking about when you say ET is not free... From the Official Web Page (sorry, it is Flash-based), to the FAQ at the previously mentioned 4players site; It's free to download and play. Modding of the game is encouraged, and there are several mods, maps and skins for it. Getting ahold of the code for the game is possible, for the purposes of making mods.
However, since it uses the Quake 3 engine, it may not be as free as you'd like it to be. (I'm not sure whether the source code for that is out there and available now - but given iD's past releases of the Quake and Quake 2 engines, it will be soon). Feel free to pick some nits about the definition of the word "free".
Thanks for pointing out the other games as well though, the more the merrier. -

Note to Developers: Include the SpaceOrbPlease include support for the SpaceOrb. It is the best controller for 3D games, ever. Six degrees of movement and rotation from a very responsive controller ball, with 6 buttons that also support chording. They don't make the SpaceOrb any more, but you can still find new ones occasionally on Ebay. I would recommend buying two at a time because the controller can break easily if you don't treat it with respect... Don't yank the controller by its chord, and don't twist give the controller ball extreme twists.
If you are a 3D gamer, you must try the controller at least once. You might never go back to keyboard and mouse!

You can get japanese H games in the US legally, though not at any retailers that I know of. There are cute little animal games where your cute little animal takes cute little turds, but not on anybody. There is a webgame version of Puyo Puyo where your special attack is throwing up on your opponent. There were a few games in the 80's where birds would poo on you, though those weren't very good games. There's the 7 sins, where the point is to try to have sex with as many people as possible. There is, of course a PS2 version.
There are a lot of bad games out there. But then, there are millions of games out there. By the same token, I don't have anything morally against making parents come in and buy games for their kids if they want them to have them. I've known far too many people in the retail sector who have told kids no, and been yelled at by the parent for stopping their kid from buying, say, Manslaughter. Inevitably, the parent then comes back the following day and freaks out on the poor underpaid associate for selling such filth to their kid.
I think the generation which preceeded ours has certain expectations about cartoons and videogames which ours does not. To them, more mature cartoons or videogames is like Jack Daniels flavored breastmilk. Or black leather studded diapers. In exactly the same way that movies were seen as kid's stuff at the turn of the century, so too is videogames the realm of kids. And therefore anything that gets released in a videogame is marketed at kids, and all of that stuff that you see in videogames is people trying to mess up your children.
It's a different perspective. While I don't disagree with the idea of restricting the sale of certain videogames to minors, I do disagree with the perspective.

3D Gamers use .torrents too
I downloaded the fairly recent Unreal Tournament patch yesterday from 3D Gamers here and their "World" download is a
.torrent. When download sites like these start using BitTorrent, I really think it has become a mainstream technology.
I also downloaded the Linux version of the same patch.
Needless to say, the Windows version downloaded at 200+ KB / sec, and the Linux version was restricted by their slightly loaded server at ~80 KB / sec. -

They left Rare.
Most talented ex-Rare people now word at Free Radical Design. They are likely the best known developer of ex-Rare people. They released the ego shooters Time Splitters (PS2) and Time Splitters 2 (PS2, CG, XB). Now they are working on Time Slitters 3 and an action adventure called Second Sight (both games are for PS2, CG, & XB).There's also a small team called Zoonami. They have two games in development. One is a music game called Funkydilla (PS2, CG, XB). The other one had the codename Game Zero in the past. Almost nothing is known about it.
Another ex-Rare team is Third Wave Games. They are developing a PC game called War World.

This was a singularly bad example to use as "legal" P2P. A better example might be 3dgamers.com who use bittorrent as one of many download options for content they have been given to redistribute.
Also, the "default" state of copyright seems to be lost on many Slashdotters-- thanks for clearing up that in the absence of a EULA, "default" copyright law applies, which does not allow redistribution. -

Logitech CyberMan 3D "Mouse" (Circa mid-90s)
Anyone else remember this from Logitech a while back? I remember Sierra Online was trying to hawk it in their product catalog (disguised as a games magazine) bundled with their games back in the mid-90s, when FPS games were just starting to take off.
Found a review of it here.
Apparently, Logitech even made a second, newer version, as seen here. I had the original, I thought it sucked.

Yeah. I distinctly remember there being other multiplayer deathmatch games around at that time... such as SpectreVR, for example ...
DOOM was a great game, for sure, but it was more an evolutionary step, which everyone wanted and had a demand for, than it was a Revolutionary jump. What made DOOM 'special' in those days was that it was legal and expected that you could download it and copy it with your friends; in those days, Shareware Floppies was all the Internet a lot of people had ... -

The Linux version is NOT includedThe guys from linuxgames.com have talked with Vivendi Universal Games and recieved an offical response: the Linux version will not be givien away. Note that you can still get the Linux dedicated server files, so you can at least use the free Windows version of T2 in order to host a server on Linux.
Apparently Tuxgames is sold out of the letfover Linux versions from Loki's firesale, and there's nothing on ebay. Looks like T2 won't work in WineX as well.
Sometimes you just don't get a break being a Linux gamer. Maybe if every third Linux gamer hadn't pirated the Linux version in the first place (since everything in Linux has to be "free", right?) things would be different. But there's so much legal detritus floating around, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting to see a free Linux version.

Building on Basics
When I first began writing shareware games for Palm OS, I created a number of small puzzle games, among other things, and found that it was pretty difficult to come up with an interesting concept every week or so. So, I can't begrudge BestGameEver if some of their new games build on their previous efforts. Besides, sometimes the most enjoyable games come about as refinements of previous (and possibly less-commercially-successful) ones.
But along those lines, Ludum Dare hosts 24- and 48-hour competitions to investigate innovative gameplay; folks who are interested in BGE's offerings for that reason might like to check them out. -

Magic Carpet
This isn't exactly new in a game... I remember that Bullfrog's Magic Carpet had this feature way back in 1994. It was virtually impossible to actually play while in this mode, of course, but it was kind of neat for a few seconds. But it was nothing more than a gimmick: certainly not a major feature.
While Quake II would be even neater, I don't think anything's changed now... Hell, text-mode Quake II would be more playable.
