About the names - MS products have no personality. As the folks on bbspot so eloquently put it:
"Microsoft leaves no doubt what their products are. If they made toilet paper it would be called Butt Wiper. Internet Explorer isn't a bad name, but it's not spectacular."

Why not Python?
At the risk of starting a programming language holy war, can someone explain to me why someone would choose to start a new project in Perl instead of Python? From what I've seen, they both do essentially the same things in the same ways, and they're both (roughly) the same as far as language overhead (from language interpretation) is concerned. But from a readability perspective, there's no question that Python is miles ahead. (Perl's readability, or lack thereof, is literally the source of jokes) In the long run, this translates into lower total development budgets, which is something businesses like to hear. So, why would anyone choose Perl over Python?

Re:Style lawsuits..
If some other website flat-out reproduced Slashdot's appearance, changing the green to orange, would a person with basic familiarity with Slashdot look at the new site and consider that the two might originate from the same people?
What! You're implying that this is not written by the

Evil Monkeys
When Gates first tried to create his fabled army of evil monkeys, he ended up with just one evil and angry monkey(boy). So he called him Steve and made him president.
But Gates didn't give up his dream and his army of evil monkeys has been harrassing open source developers ever since -

ScissorJammer asks "I just started playing around with Linux and it looks very powerful. I started thinking that this program might be perfect for my plans of destroying the ozone layer. Has any other Slashdot user tried using Linux in this way, or is the Open Source community not really into destroying the ozone layer? Either way I'd like to hear your views."

There's a hole in your bucket, Dear Liza. http://www.bbspot.com/comics/Lab-Bratz/2007/08/2827.php However, that is only the case if you assume that DRM is a method to fight piracy, which is like saying a super soaker is a method to protect your property from burglars.
Between piracy and DRM, one of them has a small chance of becoming irrelevant to industry. -

Re:So, what's actually accelerated here?Naw, it's much easier than you think. All of Physics can be expressed by just one equation, the Grand Unified Theory, the computation of which is accelerated by PhysX. The Grand Unified Theory was first discovered when programmers at Valve tried to optimise the physics engine of HL2. From the link:
Game Engine Software Engineer at Valve, Jose Garcia discovered the theory. "The game engine ran too slowly. I was assigned the job of speeding it up," he said. "I started out by combining some of the gravity equations with some of the other force equations and found it all started to fit together. After a day, I had fine-tuned the entire physics-animation functions down to four lines of code, which ran a bit faster," he added.

Possible landing area could be in Quasi, Australia
The say the don't know where the satilite will land or if the trajectory will make it burn up in the atmosphere.
One possiblity, which I hope is not going to happen is that some Republican will aim it to flatten some successful Democrat so that some other Republican posing as a Democrat so that the New world order prevails and blame it on "having no control" over where it lands. (It's a SPY satellite. Of course they WON'T tell the truth. It's classified.) "Oops? Now what a tragic event. We didn't know about it." (Not on my watch, suckers!)
Another possiblility, it lands out in the Sea, and everyone get free tacos! (Yay! Tacos!)
The third possiblility is that the satellite crashes into Quasi, Austraila. -

Quit Slashdot.org Today!Quit Slashdot.org Today!
Slashdot-free since Leap Day 2000
Welcome to the home of the Quit Slashdot movement. (Well, it's a small movement.) Anyway, here's my humble list of materials to help you quit Slashdot:
Update 14 April 2004
- Let us all take a moment to ponder the meaning of "Jew", and perhaps peruse the Jew FAQ. It's for a good cause, after all.
- Rereading this page today made me realize that my offhand comment about the Santa Cruz Operation in Reason #9 was weirdly prescient. Note that this remark dates at least to Nov. 1 2000, from the very first version of this page that archive.org possesses (Actually I'm pretty sure I made this page in Feb. 2000, but archive.org didn't spider it till later.)
Update 28 Oct 2001:
- 3000+ hits this week due to BBSpot.com listing.
- As several visitors noticed, We're Number 1.
Update 20 May 2001: 14,000+ hits last week, due to memepool and the inevitable fan-out effect. Notes:
- Thanks to all who wrote with positive comments (surprisingly, not one flame!). Unfortunately I'm really busy with end-of-quarter work right now (hey, work is the whole reason I quit Slashdot), so I can't reply/link to everyone. But, best wishes, and I hope quitting Slashdot brings the same benefits to your life that it has to mine.
- Weblogs reveal that this page has been submitted to Slashdot several times. Please do not do this. I have no desire to get a firestorm of screeching Slashdotter mail in my inbox. I have real work to do.
- Does anyone else suspect that the death of Eazel may have been partly due to employees reading Slashdot instead of coding? Save open source now! Quit Slashdot today!
Update 15 May 2001: Moving up! This page is now number 4 on Google searches for the phrase "Jon Katz idiot". Additionally, memepool.com has decided to link here as a public service. Welcome memepool readers! Pro-/. flames will be piped to
/dev/null. Also, please note this e-mail, edited to deter spam-bots; (hey, they've got a sense o -

This article says Vista to XP will happen...
According to this short news story, Microsoft (MS) announced that instead of patching bugs and improving features of Windows Vista in the next service pack (SP) release, they would just install Windows XP. It was due to customers' demands.

Jobs Offers Apple Lisa Early Adopters Store Credit
By Brian Briggs
http://www.bbspot.com/News/2007/09/jobs-offers-apple-lisa-early-adopters-store-credit.html
Cupertino, CA - Early adopters of the iPhone weren't the only ones receiving in-store credit from Steve Jobs. In an overlooked announcement, Jobs said that early adopters of the Apple Lisa would be receiving a $7000 in-store credit.
Apple released the Lisa in January of 1983 for $9,995, and the similar Macintosh was released a year later for $2,495.
"I've felt bad about people who bought the Lisa for a long time. Anybody who bought one of the first Apple Lisas really got screwed," said Jobs. "Now that we've got some cash, I think it's about time we made it right."
People interested in the refund will need to bring in an original receipt showing they bought the Lisa in 1983 and proof of purchase from the Apple Lisa box. Sales figures from that year show that if all people who bought the computer claim the refund, Apple could be liable for almost $70,000.
Steve Bloughs, who bought a Lisa, said, "When I heard about the iPhone refund, I was furious. The Lisa screw job was much more egregious. I've been waiting over twenty years for Apple to make this right. I'm glad they finally have."

Analysts think that Jobs could be setting a bad precedent which could cost Apple millions. "What about Newton owners? Apple III owners? This could quickly get out of hand," said industry watcher Devon Scanlon from Goldman Sachs.
Apple representatives said that consumers shouldn't expect a refund every time a product bombs or prices drop. These two cases were the "exception rather than the rule."
Shares of Apple stock were down on the news. -
