Puzzles are Hardcore?
This, kind readers, is why casual games are actually pretty hardcore.
Casual games can be relaxing, but I find puzzles frustrating. I've tried my hand at sudoku and I find that one boring; adding another 16 letters for word-games just doesn't do it for me. I'm sorry, but word/puzzle games are not "hardcore".
I have however been playing this game which you can get here. It's much better than those 60-minute games, and it is far more addicitive. (and free!) All that's its missing is the obligatory blood^H^H^H^H^HTux mascot... -
Re:scratches
I used CDex to rip Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime on XP and it was successful even though the CD was so scratched it wouldn't play in a normal CD player. Two thumbs way way up!

You can still do it.
There is a place on the Windows Update Site where you can download the specific patches and then your could run them separately (Look for some link that they have for Admins). When entire sites or companies's computers have to be updated, they don't waste bandwidth be making every computer talk to windowsupdate.microsoft.com. They download it centrally and then install.
You could download the patches and then copy them to your machine using a Jump Drive or some External HDD.
Also remember to install the MS Anti Spyware Tool (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/ software/default.mspx). Some other tools:

Download.com
I don't know if I'm being simplistic about it but I've tended to go with www.download.com for anything extra I need - like an avi converter or free audio editor package like audacity. Judge the download by other peoples reviews as to whether it does the job without installing any nasties. GnS

The U.S. government is very corrupt.
If you read about it, the U.S. government is far, far more corrupt than the average person thinks. Huge amounts of money are borrowed and embezzled. Some people say the money is not stolen, but it somehow makes it to the pockets of the rich, making the rich richer.
The U.S. government is very violent: History surrounding the U.S. war with Iraq: Four short stories. The violent way is preferred because it is more profitable: Ike Was Right About War Machine. ("Ike" is former President of the U.S. and former Supreme Commander of Allied Forces General Dwight D. Eisenhower.)
Here is the same video, but with no transcript, and it requires watching a commercial: Andy Rooney on the Iraq War. Here is an MP3 file of the same broadcast: Andy Rooney on the Iraq War. Here is a transcript from the publisher: Ike Was Right About War Machine.
The U.S. government is for sale to whomever has money: Unprecedented Corruption: A guide to conflict of interest in the U.S. government.
From reading about the U.S. government, I've found that many agencies operate efficiently and sensibly, but that the corruption caused by the military-industrial connection is more than one person can completely understand, there is so much material. -

And this is not counting the MAC folks, and the other alternate browsers .
If M$ starts pulling Browser wars pt 2, u will see a major upswing in Firefox .
I already disable IE on all machines I work on that are infected due to Active X
auto-installing crap on the machines .
Some websites require IE, and I tell the ppl to how to manually type in Iexplore to
get it to start .
The IE lovers hate it, the virus/spyware/malware haters love it .
M$'s browser BS is not gonna work this time .
Death to ActiveX ......

self promotionI agree that Wolfram's NKoM is disappointing as music (although it's certainly a fun website).
I have also used Mathematica to produce "music", or at least interesting noise. I tried to incorporate some music theory into my algorithm, which is much more complicated than Wolfram's seems to be, and is able to produce sounds with a certain shape, although I would hesitate to call it musical structure.
Examples of results of gotten are included at http://music.download.com/andrewdabrowski and I have a hybrid piece, part Mathematica generated, part human composed, at http://mypage.iu.edu/~dabrowsa/junk.html.
I should say that my Mathematica program produces raw midi files of voices, without any instrumentation. That is added by "hand" afterwards.

Download.com
Download.com (http://download.com/) has improved a lot, most significantly its pledge that none of the software on its site have spyware or adware. Download.com is operated by C/NET.
Their editors' rating is fairly reliable, if not, the users' comments usually set them straight. -

Re:I support it totally!
I've downloaded 50+ demos in the last few months and I've never not been able to find a download that's on a queued site on some other site with reasonable bandwidth.
www.download.com's usually ok, megagames lists lots of alternitive download sites (and it also has no-cd patches too) -
Re:Different technologies, different purposeNot according to download.com: http://www.download.com/
Which still surprises me, since I very rarely run into anyone who still uses ICQ. What gives?

There are preventative measures
Unlike in the past where you had to run ad-aware, spy-bot, and a virus program there are other places to surf safely. http://www.download.com/ViewFour-com-ViewSmart/30
0 0-8022_4-10406154.html?tag=lst-0-8 This is a small program that not only blocks all of the spyware and adware, but warns you on the screen of the website before you go there if there is an attempted download (which is blocked). To me, this is cheaper than throwing away a computer. -
Re:Of course but
Or you can use a nifty little freeware app called Active Ports.

Stopping it is easy.
There is software that can scan every page you go to and warn you and block this stuff.. ViewSmart by ViewFour.com is Web-based software that visually displays search results found in Google, MSN, eBay, and other search/e-commerce engines in a multi window environment (2-50). By visually displaying results you get to see your searches rather than having to click back and forth through them. This slick new method of searching the Web also removes the potential dangers of surfing the NET. The software scans each Web page prior to displaying it and stops all hidden and or malicious files from being automatically downloaded without your knowledge. If a page fails the scan, a large red border and stop sign will appear around the window. This means you are protected from contracting viruses, adware, spyware, and other forms of malware while surfing the Web. http://www.download.com/ViewFour-com-ViewSmart/30

Solution to the problem
If you have a visual rather than a list as a search engine then it can stop all Java Pop-Up activity. It can stop anything because it scans each page. Try it out. It's on download.com free. http://www.download.com/ViewFour-com-ViewSmart/30

There IS a completely safe way to Browse
We have developed a small program that works within both IE and FireFox that protects you completely. It's not a browser - but we are currently working on a FireFox based Browser version of the same software (using the Gecko engine). So you would be protected at all times. You can see it here... http://www.download.com/ViewSmart-by-ViewFour-com
/ 3000-8022-10391975.html?part=dl-ViewSmart&subj=dl& tag=button The reason we can make it safe is because it's the first ever VISUAL search engine. Rather than seeing the results in a list you see then in windows. Since we can scan the pages as people use them we can stop everything. If a page would download something to your computer we stop it and post a stop sign and a warning. You get NO popups, adware, malware, spyware etc. After developing the application we decided it would be better suited to build it directly into an existing platform and we chose the Gecko engine. It's currently being programmed. But there is no question it will work since it will use the same programming we use for the plugin you get from ViewFour.com. I think to say there is no way to safely browse is just wrong. You just have to know how to protect people from the ways hackers get into your computer. -
Use a browser firewall
I have been using this for a week and it works great. I have gone back from Firefox to IE. However, I do wish they would make a Firefox version.

Re:Calculator key?
You need to get yourself winkey http://www.download.com/3000-2344-913626.html?tag
= lst-0-1 It will let you map functions/programs to combinations of the windows key with other keys. By default winkey-Backspace brings up the calculator. I use it at work. At home I have a keyboard with the special buttons and do use the calculator key but my work supplied keyboard at work lacks the special buttons. -

how popular are you?
If you're just starting out trying to get your band noticed and promoted, then try submitting your music to web sites such as Pure Volume or music.download.com.
Take a look at my band's site for an example of how NOT to promote your band. Create a more professional looking site, and give more information. -
Portable Passwords
For passwords, PassVault is extremely useful. Definitely better than a text list of passwords. Recognizes webpages and application windows with password fields and prompts for learning + remembering and auto logging in too. Passwords are stored on the USB flash drive. Some application features such as auto quiting upon removal of USB drive actually designed specifically for USB flash drives.

What about text to MP3. Re:podcastsThere are preepackeged tools out there and a top rate nerd could coble one togather from free components overnight.
Step one. Obtain book in plain text format. Method depends on source format.
Step two. Use voice sinthesizer software to turn text into aoudio stream.
Step three. Capture audio stream.
Step four. Convert Audio stream to MP3.
Step five. Profit

Re:Huzzah!Linux and Mac have something Windows doesnt; a captive audience.
Bingo.
For supporting evidence, I invite you to compare the PC and Mac top 25 weekly downloads sections at Download.com.
Pay particular attention to the "Number of weeks on chart" statistic--nealy half of the titles for the Mac have been on the "top downloads" list for over two years, whereas nearly half of the titles for the PC have spent under three months on the list.
The Mac is gaining ground in the gaming department, but there are still pretty hefty opportunities there. If you make a Pretty Good game for PC, odds are it'll disappear beneath Even Better games; with the Mac, you've got a lot better chance of getting some traction...

easy enough to get around...
just download Foxmail. It's an email client that comes with an excellent mail gateway. throw away the foxmail email client, and just run the gateway. I keep mine running all the time, and through it, I *already* use Outlook 2003 to check my hotmail and yahoo accounts.
Why pay for a subscription, when I already have the full service at no extra cost?
