A huge sub-woofer for his car
These babes look damn cool (ebay category), and they aren't expensive.
I believe that a good gift should provocate people to do something they wouldn't normally do, but would like to. In this way, a sub-woofer would encourage the person to outfit the whole car with a quality audio system.
And, hey, chicks dig car audio! ;-) -
Re:/. mod points.
some times I wish mod points were on sale
:) It would make ideal gift to many of my buddies and ofcourse to myself too..
Nahh, that'd never work

Re:Not quite right
Well, first I'd point you at the Amateur Radio Relay Leagues's website - www.arrl.org.
That said:
You need to lock the problem in a bit more. If you are just looking for FM radio LO's, you'd be looking in the range of about 70-125 MHz (assuming 10.7 MHz IF, high and low side injection).
For an omnidirectional antenna, you'd be looking at a discone. For a directional antenna, that wide, you'd probably want to use a log-periodic as a yagi would be too narrow band.
Then, if you are looking for signals, a sensitive spectrum analyzer or communications service monitor - I'd suggest looking for a used IFR-1200S, IFR-1200Super, or IFR-COM-120B, but I'm biased as hell since I helped design the 120B. Check eBay (gag). Don't buy a 1200 dash-nothing or 1200-a - it does not have the spectrum analyzer in it. If you can find a 1200SRA that would be even better, but I don't think No Such Agency has given those up.
For DF work - IF you get a strong enough signal, then you can use something like a Ramsey electronics kit DF rig. You can also look up Fox hunting for more information.
Simplest way to scratch that itch - Get a ham ticket, find your nearest club, and sit at the feet of the Elmers. -
Remember this?
Everyone should get a Voltron: Defender of the Universe

Or, shop Wil Wheaton.

that's funny
a quick search on ebay reveals: link! so will they attack ebay? or what about: link again! It seems pretty obvious it's a pointless endeavour. There are tons of sites out there where you can get original, uncut hong kong, chinese, japanese etc movies. The funny thing is, I prefer getting the movies when they come out on dvd, not waiting 2 or 3 YEARS to see them when some distributor in the US picks them up and decides to sell them. So, does google.com have to remove all instances of HERO from their system? I think not. Just because Miramax got the rights to the film, does not mean they can stop someone from distributing a version that was previously released. If they cared that much, they should have funded the production as far as I'm concerned.

Re:OT
Well, it's a good excuse to buy an iBook.
I'm ashamed to not know about 16-bit PCMCIA cards, but maybe this will help redeem me.

Re:Or gauging the Canadian consumer will continue.
ive never paid for gst from any company in the us.
sometimes i have to pay a customs fee to pick it up. the ones that they dont hodl your package for you dont have to pay. they go away after time.
but the most simpleist thing to do is to buy one on ebay. its always goign to be cheaper

Wouldn't it be cheaper
Wouldn't it be cheaper in the long run to run their own fiber to each and every home, and some to the central office at the phone company. Then put up wireless base stations in public places like parks. Then when they broadband hunger public wants more speed they would not have to redo their entire infastructure.

I know what happened
After the Dec 5th meeting in court, SCO's given up hope and they've decided to start anew. Lookie --> they're even selling their webserver on Ebay. There's no DDOS, their webserver's just missing. Soon they'll sell their ftp server too. Only $699!! They didnt wanna tell anybody that they're liquidating, because they wanted to suprise us on Christmas. No more fud, nothing, leaving us Linux users in peace. Those uptight people from Utah are nice after all. And to think we were accusing them of trying to make the Linux community bad. tsk tsk. Let's all mail darl@sco.com and tell him how sorry we are
:PP.S : To those of you who noticed that the seller's located in detroit, it's just them trying to be really, really secretive...

Re:Pentax K-1000
I don't know much about this camera, but when I was comparing my options a few years ago (1999?) in preparation for my first photography class, I chose the Nikon FM10. The price was decent, and the quality was fantastic. Here are some reviews on epinions. I am by no means an expert, but I can say that as a first-time photography student, I was very happy with this camera, and various experienced photographers with whom I spoke about it said I'd made a fine choice. I've since moved on to digital, but I am still very fond of my FM10. And definitely, the price is a lot better now, if you can get a used one in good condition from ebay. I do agree that you must go for quality over price when shopping for the lenses. They make all the difference! Good luck!

Any Minolta M/MC/MD series will do.
I don't know how difficult they are to find in the U.S., but I think that any Minolta M/MC/MD camera is great to start with.
There is plenty of great lenses at bargain price -for instance, 50 mm f:1.4 costs less than US$ 30 here in Brazil. There are also other lenses that are hard to find in most AF systems (Minolta Maxxum included), like a 135mm f:2.8. I've seen great Kalimar lenses of this kind for M/MC/MD for US$ 50-75. Try to find a comparable lens for your AF system and just see how much they cost.
I've got my SRT303b (minimum shutter speed 1/1000, DOF preview, with optional aperture-priority mode) with a 28mm f:3.5, 50mm f:1.4, 80-200mm f:4, flash, tripod and case for less than US$ 200.
Finally, this camera is built as iron tank, so it will withstand all kinds of weather - something that won't happen with modern SLR's, digital and film. And it will shot even without batteries. -
Re:Digital SLR is the Future
Note you said "professionals". People who want to start photography don't have the resources professionals do.
Yet another reason to use digital. Digital photography is at least an order of magnitude less expensive than film photography.
Yet I've taken pics with an SLR in much less light that came out dandy because I could set the f-stop to 1.7 and speed up the shutter by a factor of 4 or so. I could *never* have taken these pictures of the aurora with anything but an SLR.
Being able to adjust the f-stop, shutter speed, and exposure values has nothing to do with the camera being (or not being) a SLR.
Here is a shot comparable to yours taken with a Nikon Coolpix 995 and here is someone else I know with the same camera. He uses it with a spotting scope for some outstanding close-ups. And here is a place you can get them for under $400.
Here is a shot of mine that was taken at night with a Monolta DiMage 7i... a SLR-like camera, though not a true SLR. -
The Ultimate Learning Camera
The beginner's camera is (and has been for years) the Pentax K-1000. It's pretty much the defacto standard for students and beginning photographers.
It's been discontinued recently -- but you can pick 'em up at photo, pawn shops or ebay very reasonably.
You won't find a better or more sturdy camera for a beginner (I did photography professionally for quite a while, so I have *some* knowledge in this realm.)
Failing that, go Nikon over Minolta and Canon (in that order). -
Pentax K2I started off with a Pentax K2.
It's manual everything, solid no-nonsense body. Very little to break, very easy to use.
Of course, you have to do everything yourself - which helps you to learn little things like composition, depth-of-field, etc. etc.
the model is at least 25 years old - that's when I had mine (!)
After that, I had a Nikon FG - also a great, simple camera.

Re:A huge loss with death of Fallout
"Now you got me interested... I never played Fallout, but I definitely loved "A canticle for Leibowitz". Do you know if the game is still available?"
other way around.. does that book have a 'vault dweller' character a crazy nuclear powered car and 2 headed brahmin?
cause that would get me interested in the book..
you can probably get that game off kazaa or in a bargain bin for $10 (if you want to pay for things). ebay is good too first listening is 5.50 for fallout 2. play one and then two it will make more of an impact, but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD dont play fallout tactics.

Re:Ebay?
Ebay iPods usually go for around $250+
.. They seem to hold their value relatively well .. still you can save about $100 bucks. -
Re:pic of computer
Nope - you just can't buy 333MHz packages anymore.
Blatantly nonfactual.
Theory was that the prices of computers would fall.
I don't recall anyone credible espousing such a theory. It's a rather ignorant idea... (Unless you're looking at it from a large enough scale where prices genuinely have fallen, which is the case over a 4+ year measurement)
It's true that marketing pressure causes people to replace computers unnessecarily. But the idea that "if not for greedy marketers, we'd all be buying new PIII 400mhz computers for $40" is completely unfounded.
It doesn't really cost all that much less, today, to built a 300mhz CPU than a 3000mhz one. Major R&D improvements were needed so that 3000mhz would even be possible... but now that the money's been spent, there'd be little financial incentive to continue building the slow ones. If some insane vendor wanted to build new 100mhz Pentium computers (from new parts, not leftovers) it would cost nearly as much as a new bargain-basement 1.4Ghz system. There's no meaningful savings from using the weaker stuff.
Look at the automobile market. A 1993 car is $1000, a 1997 is $5000, and a 2003 is $15000. The old stuff is cheaper... but there is no way a manufacturer could build a new car to 1993 standards for any less than a 2003 model. -

Need more collaborative filteringHere's the information filters I use these days:
Movies: RottenTomatoes, imdb, and MetaCritic have saved me dozens of hours of time I might have wasted on crap (like Matrix Revolutions, or TimeLine).
Books: Amazon, despite its evils (patents/privacy), is a very nice filter (with a few shills and idiot-reviewers). I [ab]use amazon as a filter, and then buy them cheaper new or used.
News: Popular Daily News Tidbits, Blogdex, Daypop, and slashdot.
Music: iRATE radio, and word of mouth. Need more Collaborative Filtering in this area to root out the Clearchannels/RIAAs function as a giant pusher of "cool"
Ads (aka: mental engineering): I use PopFile to filter SPAM, and Privoxy to filter out slow-loading, privacy-invading, all-around-annoying ADS. I'm still missing a proxy for my eyeballs in the real world. Soooon.
:)Cheap Products: Not a quality filter exactly, but a quantity filter: PriceWatch, PriceGrabber, Froogle, Anand's Hot Deals
...Phew, that's a lot of linkage. Anyway, I couldn't function without these and other filters; I'd really be info overloaded.
Collaborative filtering in general has a very bright future IMO.

Re:100MHz was the absolute limit
Actually, I just ordered a Type-R emblem to put on the new case for a celeron 600 rig with i810 onboard video and a 6GB drive. Yes it is going to be full of LED fans and CCFL "neon" tubes.

just realized how pricey...
From article:
Taito aims to sell 10,000 of the standalone game machines at $2,772 a unit.
That is a bit expensive if all you're looking for is nostalgia since you can buy the original for $1295 or maybe off e-bay for $369 (current bid at time of comment). -
With that argument...
that by declining your right to own exclusively your creation you violate the constitution; we would all be in violation of the constitution every time we DIDN'T: speak, own a firearm, practice a religion, etc.
what a bag...
oh by the way, i thought of a great way to spread chaos. what if an enterprising group of troublemakers
1) hopped on to ebay and spend $10 to get some of those NASTY NASTY potent stink bombs that come in glass vials. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item =2208034696&category=14014
2) purchased a sling-shot to go along with it.
3) ... went to Utah.............

Get a Toughbook off EbayI wish I could buy one of those things on the open market, I love the damn things.
You can get them on ebay for around $2,000. You can also buy them new in the $3K - $4K range.
I'd probably go for one of the lower-powered CF-25s for a couple hundred. Actually, I'd buy three of them and use two for parts. If you're really in the market for a portable that does duty in hazardous conditions, you're probably not going to be doing video editing and such on it anyway, and might be able to get by with a P166 CPU.

ferrari copying
wrong about being able to copy ferarri because they are not IP. the design of car is an IP.
there used to be a lot of lamborghini and ferarri replica on ebay. there's one company who really made a good looking ferarri out of a chevy v6. they made it so good that ferrari sue the company. now other people make replicas w/ lambo and other hot-stuff cars. you copy it too good, the car company will sue your ass off.
don't think they made ferarri replicas? take a look at ebaymotors. -

Well, since we're clearly doomed, I for one welcome our new SCO overlords.
I'm wearing my shirt now (link via Groklaw).

(As Groklaw points out, SCO is clearly playing for time now. I'm not even sure if they believe they can win.) -
Re:Tag Team SingleplayerSome good reasons, some less so.
PC controllers, especially these days, largely ape their console counterparts. Plus, there's much to be said about playing a game with the input device it was designed for. I do lots of emulation on my PowerBook, and it's great, but sometimes, since my controller isn't the same as a Genesis (for example) one game will need a button combination that isn't too convienent on my controller mapping, but changing the mapping presents issues in another game. It's not a deal-breaker, but it can be annoying.
Old hardware isn't hard to find, particularly for the average Slashdot user. As for hardware lifespan, you have part of a point, but not incredibly so. My two NESs now work like brand new after buying a pair of $10 replacement connectors. Anything newer than the NES doesn't have the same design flaws that led to the NES's problems (which were happening back when the NES was a current console, even).
There's also lots to be said for playing the console games on the TV. It's usually easier to crowd around the TV than it is the computer desk - or if you use a laptop, you're playing on a small screen. At the same time, as you point out, emulators do often have options to improve the visuals (I just played Super Metroid with OpenGL making everything smoother and nicer looking).
I'd say it all depends on the computers, the seating arrangements near them, etc. Plenty of good reasons to go either way.
-
How often do you really need to look at old bills?I just throw then in a box. Once a year, I search down for anything more than a couple years old and throw away anything beneath it. Other than a tax audit, I can't imagine I would ever need to look at them after they have been paid. Same thing for receipts and invoices, they go in the box.
If you want to track money, having the paper is not nearly as useful as entering the data into a financial program. Try GnuCash or something of that ilk.
Delivery menus are different story. I keep them under a magnet on the fridge. If you get a nice rare earth magnet that can hold a half inch stack of menus, that problem is easy to solve (get at least the half inch cubes).
Any solution that requires every document to be scanned is not going to work for you if you can't even file the documents. what are the chances you are going to get around to that stack of stuff to be scanned?
Invest in a magnet, a big box, and a good paper shredder.

Limited Etiquette
But these rules were created before many advances were made.
For instance, you aren't likely to find everything you want at an online store in three clicks. If you are looking for jewelry or specialty blank CD media, you may get to your category in three clicks, but there are still a dozen clicks beyond that to see the full contents of the category.
I would be interested in seeing what kind of tasks users were asked to perform and rate their "three-clickability" (terrible term). Almost anything involving a store, inventory, or selection process voids that "rule" for the end result, but not for the category.
Perhaps it should be rephrased that the user should be able to get to any content-space in three clicks instead of a page.
Pricewatch gets you to content in two clicks.
Outpost has three clicks to content on the sections I checked - one click, really - two for refining.
ice.com has one click to content, and then two for refining.
Barnes & Noble has three clicks to content.
Even eBay has three clicks to content. -
Wow! What a complete and utter clusterfark!
Wow! That really is the ugliest thing I've ever seen! Thanks, Slashdot, for bringing this piece of crap to our attention. Now hundreds of 1337 g4m0rz who have modded their PCs with... well the same tubes and LEDs and plexy crap, really... can feel better about their 'Tandy 30-in-One' lookalike craptastic boxes! They have truly acheived 1960s electronic chic.
Now, if we could find something to make all those airfoiled, spoilered, prismatic, fiberglass Civic, Prelude and Supra mods look like more than some 6 year old's first attempt at a Revell Mustang kit. They need love too.
Yours truly,

All right, feeling less lazy now. Cryo lego man is here. The penny-arcade custom stickers are here.
Meanwhile, I think I have worked out a nice business plan:
1. Make (lame) X-Box case mod.
2. Make self-congratulatory webpage (don't forget to have a sucker friend pose in the photos).
3. Put X-Box on E-Bay.
4. Post to /.
5. Profit???
Methinks my business plan has been stolen already... -
Odd, as they allow meteorites
eBay has an official category for meteorites, with nearly 1000 items listed.
I wonder why eBay feels it's OK to sell some things from space and not others. Is it legal to sell moon rocks, or are they all NASA's property through some sort of weird eminent domain? I can certainly understand forbidding Columbia items, that's just out of human decency, but the moon rock thing has me perplexed. -
IT *WAS* sold on E-Bay - Today!
Good God... After reading your comment, I thought I would search e-bay for "xbox mod" and holy shit... Here it is:

Yes it is too big.First, the 4.2" vs 5.5" that's over an inch longer (or 30% longer) that it sticks down into your pocket. That's exacerbated by the extra half an inch of depth of the Riot over the iPod. And this auction says it weighs 10 oz.
This Rio Karma, on the other hand, is small. Its longets dimension is only 3" and it weighs 5.5 oz.
