Would I even notice the CPU speedup if I upgraded?
Like many people, I want my PC to keep up with the newest games, but none of these are CPU constrained. With dual graphics cards, even a cheapish CPU will not degrade performance. If people do a lot of rendering video or working in Photoshop, they can use Ouadro or FirePro rendering accelerators, and even a $170 cpu will not be the limiting factor.
I think it's time for tech journalists to do the equivalent of a "taste test" to see if even power users can really tell whether they're running one of these superchips or a downmarket CPU like a threadripper, or even an old ivy bridge E5-1660v2 from 2012. It would be hilarious if these systems were configured in identical cases that have reversed labels, just to watch these "computer pro's" talk about how they're sensitive enough to notice the "slightly improved response" in the system that they believe has the new chip, but doesn't actually.

That's a buttload of TRS-80s
$10 million should buy about 73,000 TRS-80s, if you figure $100 each plus $37 shipping. At an estimated weight of 44 lbs each, that comes to 3.2 million lbs, or 1605 tons. Here's yer first shipment. Cmon back. Cmon back.

Re:well comcast does let you use your own router
Most fiber connections don’t let you use your own router. It’s fiber up to your house, then it converts to coax cable. Then you need a modem like this to get to your Lan. They don’t have any that come without a router.

The phones: Xiaomi A1 64 GB for $188, iPhone Xs for $999
The watches: Samsung Galaxy for $126, and the Apple Watch for $400
The Chromecast/Apple TV: Chromecast Ultra 4K for $59, Apple TV for $179
Seems his claims check out. I guess in your world, stating actual, hard facts you don't like is a troll? Most people consider that an education, but that might break your reality distortion field, so better to simply shout TROLL! and run away, eh?

Have you seen the Hot Wheels Chess Set, Checkmate?
For Hot Wheels 50th Anniversary, they released a first edition chess set made up of Hot Wheels cars. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.htm... (Available on Ebay) called Checkmate.
So yeah, Chess is back, cooler than ever, and everyone enjoys it. It sure beats run and gun first person shooters. It's a game where you actually have to think two to three moves ahead... Oh my!

Well... the full implications could be easily tested by purchasing some uranium glass beads on ebay, grinding them to powder, pouring said powder into an envelope and mailing it to Andrew at Environmental Protection Agency, Office of the Administrator, 1101A, 1200 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, DC 20460.

Camel had flavored cigarettes well into the mid 2000s. My friend started smoking after I left a tin of Camel Cremas in his car. They had other ones like Dark Chocolate Mint, Izmir Stingers (sweet and sour), High Ball (whiskey flavored), one that was Orange and Chocolate.
They were in some weird line that only came in tins - It was this line -

Those little physical trinkets really helped give each company its own distinct personality.
I remember back when I started selling online, almost any swag from any of the Ultima games up to then was always a pretty much guaranteed cha ching.
Nowadays, I have no idea (guess I could look it up, but don't feel like it.
:p ). I think back in the day, almost anyone trying to sell Ultima related stuff almost always did so hoping to attract the attention of one particular buyer: Fortrandragon. But alas, it looks like he must have finally retired from active collecting after achieving what I presume is the most holy grail (and not just a grail shaped beacon) of Ultima Collectors.

Re:A note to you nerds and geeks
Sure thing. All you need to do is go to a site like eBay or Amazon, purchase the cartridge/disc for the game you want (buying it used should be fine), and then rip it yourself using one of the numerous ripping devices that are legally available. Easy peasy.
When you get down to it, the process is more or less identical to ripping audio from a CD or a video from a DVD (in fact, I used to rip all of my PS1 games from disc, just like I would my CDs, and I actually intend to go back and do so for all of my disc-based games in the next few years here) and, for the most part, just as legal.
The most obvious way that you might run afoul of the law with the steps above is that some emulators require that you separately download a copy of the console's BIOS before they'll work, which is an act of copyright infringement. Thankfully, more and more emulators are moving away from that practice by doing the tough work of reverse engineering the original BIOS so that they no longer need a copy of it to work, and the standing precedent in the US is that they are perfectly legal. The other way you might run afoul of the law is that newer systems may have copy protection mechanisms in place. Just as you're allowed to format shift a blu-ray but you're not necessarily allowed to break the encryption on the blu-ray to do so, you may run into issues with games on newer consoles that have similar protections in place.
Alternatively, if you don't want to deal with ripping ROMs from your own, legally-purchased copies of the game, most of the popular games from old Nintendo systems (as well as others) are available for purchase on newer Nintendo systems. Were you actually interested in pursuing this legally (rather than simply asking a rhetorical question as a poor rationalization for your illegal behavior), you'd already know that the Wii and Wii U provide a rather extensive back catalog of old titles that are available for purchase (though I think the Wii is losing access to the store in a few months). Likewise, many old console games are available on Steam, GOG, or similar storefronts. And for older games that had a PC release, many are still playable thanks to WINE, ScummVM, or other pieces of software that allow you to simulate outdated hardware.
Honestly, it's easier than ever to go about this stuff legally. Unless you're talking about obscure games that have been lost to time, there's almost always a legal avenue open that (after a possible fixed cost for the some necessary hardware) only costs whatever the prevailing price is for the game.

Re:Surprised
Some of what i work with is sterling. Ebay is replete with sterling findings that are obvious fakes, and it has been for years with absolutely nothing done. First page example:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sterl...
These earwires will weigh 2.5dwt per 10 pair. 100 pair will weigh 25dwt, which is 1.37 oz. That's 1.27 oz of silver, with a melt value of $20.85. BUT, you can have it made into earwires for a low low price of $8.99 AND free shipping.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/50PCs...
These here have a melt value of $5.58 @ .34dwt. These you can have for a low low price of $1.68, with FREE SHIPPING from Hong Kong. (it would cost me $2.66 to mail this across the street)
https://www.ebay.com/itm/925-S...
Same as the one right above, just a different company.. and they're going to charge you a whopping $2.15 (for that $5.58 melt value silver) BUT, they're still going to give you free shipping from China.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/50PCS...
This one here is one from Hong Kong, same as the last two, but for $1.89 (remember that's $5.58 melt value of silver there). The difference is: this is a SPONSORED add.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/925-S...
I'm not even going to bother with this one. This one is selling some of these things at about 1/4 the melt value (the ones i checked).
Fuck it, i'm tired of doing the math. The bad news.... i was less than 1/3rd of the way down the FIRST page in the search.... and some of those i skipped over are certainly fake crap as well, i just don't have the weight for those types of earwires. Now, it doesn't matter if you complain, because ebay does NOTHING. These sales have been going on for at least a decade.
You have to be pretty stupid to think a company is going to take silver, form it into findings, and then sell it for 1/4 of the value of the silver that they could get ANYWHERE in the fucking world. -

Re:Car batteries in a boxIIRC, I used some opamps to get the other voltages (5 and 3,3?). It was about 15 years ago. I've seen a ton of dcdc buck level shifting boards on ebay for a couple dollars. FWIW, this was a shrunken formfactor board about 200x200mm, and did't use standard pci slots, but did take a standard pc power supply. I'm sure it would work with any other pc board (as long as the appropriate currents can be supplied).
This is how I have my rpi board setup too - running off of batteries/charger. Except the batteries are 16650(??) lipo...something standard. That was a while ago too.

Re:Overengineering?
You don't seem to grasp that any tech involving AI/Pattern recognition is going to be error prone and even a
.001% error is magnified at the scale at which warehouses and stores are maintained. Logic based on scales is deterministic and fairly simple to implement. As for cost, a weight sensor for each shelf cost less than $30 in retail:
http://www.ebay.com/bhp/weight...Let's take about 30 aisles, 20 racks per aisle, and 5 shelves per rack.. so about 3000 shelves or about $90K in sensors.
You can get a sectional shelf for around $65:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Gondo...So for shelving, it would cost around $39K. It'd be around $130K (not taking into account the cost savings Walmart will get to get this in scale). The maintenance would be much less than that of the robot.
The software logic would be simple, if one box of Toilet paper is 1kg, then how many toilet paper boxes are there if the weight read is 9kg... 9 boxes.. that is it. -

At which point, all businesses become cash only, resulting in an embarrassing number of angry people blaming retailers for 'not having a backup' (to a main trunk line?).
The "backup" is the old style credit card imprint machine. The cards with the raised letters are being phased out slowly, but if what you say is true and this happens once a year, it's a wise investment for retailers at around $20. -
Re: What happens
Leaf warranties are transferable (although they're not "nice" interiors, to be fair
;) ) For a nice interior on the used market, something like the BMW i3. Eventually there will be Model 3s on the used market, but that day is not today. Also, Teslas tend to depreciate rather slowly compared to other EVs. -
Re: What happens
Calling a 6-7 year-old car a "new car" is funny. You can get a 6-7 year-old Leaf with 40k on it in pristine condition for a lot cheaper than that. And then drive it for a lot cheaper. And pay less on maintenance. And because it's a cheaper car, pay less on insurance.

How long does Apple produce parts? That's what this discussion was about after all. You can't even update the OS after 5 years. I still have my Canon AE-1 I bought new in 1982. There still seems to be a few working "magic drain pipes" in working condition on ebay. Those were released in 1989.

TTL Gates
I made a stepper motor controller about 30 years ago with just TTL gates. Today I'd use a PIC microcontroller, but for open source, you want to work with the bare wires. Get a 'solderless breadboard' an assortment of chips, some LEDs and a big piece of #20 wire to cut to short lengths and strip the ends on. You need a 5 volt supply, but you can salvage one from a cellphone wall-wart charger. That part is much easier than it was 30 years ago.
You can get a bunch of TTL gates on eBay, I think.

Re:TLS Client Certificates
Typically your private key is encrypted with a passphrase. So an attacker would need to both have your device and know your passphrase.
Typically you have one key/certificate per role; I have a certificate for work, for ray@company.com, that is different from my personal cert.
You see this all the time when you authenticate the company you're talking to via https SSL - https://ebay.com/ has one cert, not a different cert for every user. Their cert identifies eBay's web server - same cert presented to everyone. On the other hand, they probably use a different cert for email and code signing than they use for their web server. The server authenticating you works almost exactly like you authenticating the server. The difference is that often the server cert has an empty passphrase so that an admin doesn't have to type in the passphrase on each reboot.
