New Doom 3 trailer
A new Doom 3 (Xbox) trailer came out yesterday. Looks like all new in-game footage. Get it at IGN or FilePlanet

Re:As a dabbling screenwriterMachinimation software by FountainHead Entertainment might be a good way to do storyboards. You can use existing Quake 3 maps and it's really easy to find good ones online. There's a free version that comes with assets from the now defunct "Game Over" 3D cartoon.
We use our own Quake 2 mod to do a lot of the storyboards for our episodes, it's a good fast way to see exactly what a camera would see. We also just draw pictures too.

Re:I blame 'Microsoft only' consultants for this.A DMZ that runs through a 3rd Network card on an Astaro Linux box does it for us here. We would never allow someone to just bring their laptop on our internal lan all willy nilly. If they want to play a game, of some sort or another than you will have to do it through the internet and connect to a public server or a private one we setup in the DMZ like every other slob out there.
Sorry those be the rules, don't like it use dial-up at my place.

Re:CD key?
I filled in the form on fileplanet, but didn't get an email within half an hour, so I don't know if they are emailing me one or if it will require the FP installer.
umm, it seems to be an IE only style page. I tried 3 times in the ol' firefox to no avail. Put your /. pride aside and launch IE and visit this page again.
Sorry to AC, but've I modded this one a lot and don't want it to go to waste. -
CD Key Link
For some odd reason you have to use a seperate link to actually get your Tribes 2 CD Key.
The link for generating the key is http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/tribes2_cgw/. .
And yes, you do have to veryify your email address on your Fileplanet account BEFORE you go to that page. -

Yeah, I know Fileplanet is evil, but I could never get ifilm movies to play on my computer (Linux).

Re:[off-topic] Speaking of worst games ever...
What, you don't remember the infamous Chex Quest? It used the Doom engine, but really looked like something Wolfenstein would be ashamed of. It even had two sequels.
I guess it is weird enough to escape a "worst of all time" label. But it should garner a "best of so-bad-it's-good." Sometimes you can find them online.

Re:Umm...
Q3 ran fine on my oldskool radeon with no accelerated drivers through wine with no problem at all.
Why the hell would you run Q3 through wine on Linux? Just download the Q3 Linux binary. -
The Deus Ex demo suxor! Here's why!
So I downloaded the demo and am playing this Liberty Island level with the statue of liberty destroyed. I've got an AMD k6-2 380 with a TNT2 card. This sucker runs horribily! It's like a freaking slide show! This is supposed to be the Unreal engine, but there's nothing here. I mean, the statue of liberty level looks cool and everything, but honestly. It takes a 600 with a Voodoo5 to get any kind of decent framerate. Who at Ion Storm thought they could get away with just supporting 3dfx cards? This should work just as well on my nvidia card as it does on my brother's 3dfx card. Just because nvidia is new to the game doesn't mean Ion Storm should drop it! Unreal Tournament runs no problem, so what gives?
And the gameplay design. What horrible AI! You can shoot Bad Guy A who's standing beside Bad Guy B, and Bad Guy B freaks out for a minute but if you hide, he's goes back to business as usual, even though his smoking buddy is laying knocked out cold on the ground. How realistic is that?!? Wouldn't the guy go get friends or something? Wouldn't he call up his supervisor on some kind of futuristic radio? Give me a break, this is completely non-real Ion Storm. All you have to do is kill the guys one at a time, hide, and then kill the next guy. Whoopie. And there's more! Like the bad guys would actually leave a vent hole with boxes at the side of the building that you can climb up into. Honestly. The AI sux Ion Storm! They don't even dodge behind buildings, and all you have to do to run away from guys is enter a vent. You can shoot a guy with a poison dart, walk away and come back 5 minutes later and the guy is still standing there like you never hit him. Wouldn't he be looking for the bastard that shot him with the poison dart? Whatever. Don't give me this "Guess it was the wind crap."
The skill system SEEMS neat, but it's so unrealistic. As if within a period of 5 minutes gametime and a helicopter ride to a different level you suddenly become a better swimmer. Riiiiiight.
And let's not even talk about the inventory system. Sure, I got used to it within an hour, but it's like a freaking jigsaw puzzle! Why can't they just use what 's worked FOR THE LAST 10 FREAKING YEARS since Wolf3d and just give me 10 weapons, 1-10. None of this number slot crap. It's like they completely ignored everything that has been done before. Why do I have to inventorize all this freaking ammo! I'm like a walking weapons depot or something. good grief.
This is definitely not as scary as System Shock 2 either. Which, I might add, runs completely FINE on my system. They should have just made it like System Shock 2 and stuck with what works, throw in some conspiracy theories and leave it at that.
Let's not even talk about the physics.
I hear that halfway through the game you can't even sneak around anymore because there are these near-invincible commandos! sup wit dat Spector!?
I don't understand why I have to upgrade my computer just to play this game. It's like Ion Storm was just ignoring their customer base from System Shock 1 and 2 and Thief, which all run fine on my PC. This demo will definitely stop me from buying Deus Ex! -
What a lousy trailer...However, there is a two-video set at Fileplanet that does more than show close-ups of Alien and Predator skin. In it, there's an interview with the creator, as well as some concept art, detailing the story.
If you don't feel like downloading it, it takes place in 2004 in Antarctica, where scientists and men with guns find a pyramid built by predators and run into teenage predators fighting aliens in a manhood ritual.

Re:Well wellI believe that was Bink video. (We're talking about the videos in
.exe form that you can download from FilePlanet, such as this one). I, too, was really impressed by the quality. It looked like the scenes were actually being rendered in real time, no exaggeration at all. Can we get that for MPlayer? ;-) Seriously, though, the filesize of this video was really quite large compared to the length (a minute or two, 100 MB). Compare that to DivX at 500 MB an hour for quite decent quality. I wonder what DivX could achieve if you gave it that much room for a few minutes of video?Supposedly Bink uses a compression technology based on wavelets that is not used anywhere else. Looking at the quality of that movie, it seems pretty interesting. That would be a neat reverse-engineering project, for somebody with the time.

Re:Well wellOh, yeah: Link to the page with that quote.
Also, the Planet Half-Life Screenshot Gallery, a page with a huge number of interviews with Valve staff and previews of the game, and Videos. The huge one is awesome.

Re:Not to be a party pooper but...
The graphics suck...a lot.
Why do people always say stuff like that? Nuts. You don't even notice the graphics after a few weeks. The game isn't in the presentation, it's in the mechanics. That's what the game is to those who still play it. The moving and shooting, not the pretty skins.
Some people don't even care if the player models look like people; they use stickmen versions for higher FPS and to precisely show the hitboxes. Think about it this way: is chess just as fun when you use plain, functional pieces instead of carved, beautiful pieces? -
Even better -- gamplay movieNot to mention a gameplay movie at FilePlanet, IGN, Tiscali Games, or WorthPlaying.
Personally I don't see the big whoop. Although I hope I'm still alive when the gameplay itself has graphics like that of the cinematics in these game movies. Remember the trailer at the beginning of Quake 3: Arena? I nearly shite myself a the thought of gameplay someday being that detailed and intense. Will it ever?
-
Re:No backwards compatibility?
FilePlanet has a Quicktime movie of the Half-Life 2 E3 presentation. Looks like the physics engine will ensure you can interact with almost anything in the game.
Unfortunately, for _true_ interaction, you need a dataglove and some kind of a HUD. (Question: how much would they cost if mass-made?) FPSs' gun metaphor (and consoles' controllers) are what is really holding back fully interactive gameplay.

Re:Firstly...
Funny, I run Linux and seem to recall enjoying playing:
Neverwinter Nights,
Unreal Tournament 2003,
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory,
America's Army,
Return To Castle Wolfenstein,
and Quake 3
None of which require WineX or VMWare to be installed.
Yes, there are some games that only run in Windows, but developers are starting to see how easy it is to make a Linux port and pick up some free advertising and some more sales simply for the fact that there's a native linux client.
Another game coming soon that will ship with a linux version included in the windows box is Savage.
(what was I saying about free advertising?) -
Re:Why do modders seem to prefer Half-Life?
My question is, why do people seem to prefer creating excellent mods for a game like Half-Life and not so much for a game like Quake 3.
Quake3 while yes a good engine, has a few problems, the texture maps make it look dark and cartoonish. HL textures look better compared to Q3.
I would love to be playing these mods natively under Linux
WineX from transgaming, works great for HL.
Also, does anyone know how the Doom 3 engine will compare with the Half-Life 2 engine with regards to the mods.
HL2 engine is going to be the hot game engine for the next 5 years. After seeing the 600meg mpeg of HL2, the demo they gave at E3, its an engine that you can do anything with.
What I havnt heard anyone talk about it, how HL2 engine will be compared to the CS2 engine, since they are not based on the same engine. So will people just port CS to HL2 and be done with it? Or will the CS be locked into a weaker engine? That would be quite disappointing. -
Re:Doom Forever?
Anyone else feel ID got a little scared when they saw the Half Life II trailer? Much like the 3D Realms guys see their technology be eclipsed every six months?
I cannot express the feelings I felt when I first saw this game, except that pervailing knowledge that my life will become less meaningful than usual come September. -
Re:id
They have. And it looks awesome. It's just that, frankly. The Half-Life 2 stuff looks MORE awesome, and is overshadowing it.
-
Re:Movies of Games
Yeah, the NOLF2 cutscenes were cool, but graphics-wise they will have nothing on Half-Life 2 once it comes out. Check out the 500mb footage at fileplanet and search for it.

Re:P2P and partial files is the answer[P2P's] not a solution for anything that doesn't involve sharing illegal files.
Oh? So then I guess "illegal p2p" sites like GameTab (bittorrent) and FileFront (redswoosh) aren't a solution for getting game demos faster than CrapPlanet's fantastic client-server lines eh?
P2P is a hack
Why do I get the impression that your job depends on the centralization of power that client-server allows?
If I need to download a BF1942 patch, I'll get it and delete it
Speak for yourself. Not everyone is as selfish as you apparently are, and p2p will eventually have reputation systems for weeding rogues and assholes out of our webs of trust.

Re:Shareware = Demo on release
Still, I can't recall a game that I haven't been addicted to without playing the demo first, e.g Uplink, System Shock 2, Sim Golf or even Rise of Nations. I mean even Mr. Driller I tried out before I bought the damn thing.
I cannot think of one game that has not been demoed, developers know that the one way to get a good game known and bought is to release a demo, well except for SS2. -
Re:Opera vs Mozilla
what about those obnoxious adds you'd get when you visit fileplanet (http://www.fileplanet.com) they are shockwave/flash adds. i use mozilla's phoenix browser and sometimes konqueror. assuming you have the flash plugin installed how would the browser block those? i've seen more and more of those quite recently

Loki's Best Port Ever...
I gotta say, of all the Linux games I've tried, Alpha Centauri is most tight. Not only was there no messing around trying to get the thing to run, it's a big fat game with good graphics that will keep you busy for a long time.
If you want to check out the demo, you can download it here. -

MX?
I'm fairly happy with my Geforce 4 MX, which is a big step up from my old Geforce 1 ddr. I've been utilizing the video capture feature of it and you can download a movie of me outrunning cops in Vice City, HERE.
I'm just curious... what is so bad about MX that it only cost me $112 Canadian dollars to get the card? I find that it gives me pretty good fps in Quake 3.
But Doom 3 will be another story, methinks. :)

Re:PC Centric???
Kewl...Yes, I certainly enjoyed the origonal Hired Guns for the Amiga...Interestingly enough I thought that if this game were done right, it would be an extremely kewl concept for a realtime multi-player 3D game...As a small footnote, an incomplete and extremely buggy AGA version was actually available through "alternate channels"...
To add to what you mentioned about the "3D" (PC) version ... as far as I can tell, the last company that had anything to do with the rights to Hired Guns (3D) was VR-1 (Jaleco) ... now largely an X-Box developer (how ironic). In 2000, they released this 2:50 minute movie at E3 and even had a "sneak peak" page on their main site. There were a few stories in magazines and on websites that discussed the unique gameplay...but now, the only mention of it on the company's web site seems to be in an "about us" page...
Just out of curiosity, did you come from the Amiga before your work on Hired Guns (your nick would suggest so) or were you strictly PC??? -
ONI // Ghost
It's surely looks like ONI to me. ONI was missing a lot of details and the 3d world was kind of block shaped, but i hope it will be the same 'genre'. Things i loved about were the anime style 3d, and the fact that it was running very nicely on my old laptop (a 333Mhz).
Well, StarCraft ghost looks far more beautiful, i hope they'll be a dozen of combo to do. Btw, a funny thing is that ONI means ghost or demon in Japanese... So, is this StarCraft - ONI? ;-)
Check the web for some shots, scripts and maps at ONI Central and ONI Res. Btw, you can download the demo it's not that big, and i guess i'll playing it in some minutes again.

Re:City of Heroes
Well have you played Unreal Tournament 2003 yet? It has this really cool game called Bombing Run. Its like Death Match football, very cool.
Penny Aracde did a little write up of it, and a comic.
You can get the demo from fileplanet of course.

jingoist as Jinoism does
I love the Orwellian double-speak above the pic on the front page of that link:
Operation: DEFEND YOURSELF ?
Maybe someone should tell the US Military that 'offense' is *not* defense...
Its funny how the US calls its armed forces 'defence forces' and such - when in reality, the US Army is the most offensive force in the world. There is virtually no chance of armed conflict in North America (oceans as natural barriers), but American military is not meant to 'defend' themselves - its meant to goto war around the world. Just look at any of the 70 armed conflicts USofA has been involved in since WWII.
Defence my ass. Warmongers -- and this "Video Game" is patent jinogism (inspite of the editors non sequitor).

If you go to this page at Fileplanet.com, they have a CD burning service where you can fill up a CD with files and they'll mail it to you. I'm not sure how much the CD costs, though.

Re:What you don't get.
i download on average about 5 gigs per week. that might seem excessive but i like to download almost every new demo on fileplanet as well as keep a well updated drivers database. (im a technician, what can i say?) besides that and getting various distros of linux on the regular, i use probably more than the average user. but all my uses are legal and justified considering what i purchased the service for. i guess the final determination is how much bandwidth is the upper limit.
