However, the truth is I am part troll-I try to make posts based on a core of truth, but coated in a layer of not entirely honest devil's advocacy and sprinkled with a few outright lies. This is why we must consider: who had something to gain from the disasterous crimes of September 11th? Obviously not Osama Bin Laden, who would net no financial windfall from the destruction of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Although he has loudly applauded the "terrorist" acts of September 11th and even tacitly taken credit for them, there is no reason to believe that he is anything more than a bandwagon jumper. Being blamed for the destruction of the World Trade Center has done more for his image than any amount of militant Islamic rhetoric.

But if not Bin Laden, then who?

It so happens that on December 11th, "coincidentally" 2 months after the tragedy, Credit Suisse First Boston quietly agreed to pay out US$100 million in order to settle an 18 month old investigation into its handling of certain high-profile technology IPOs (Initial Public Offerings). One of the most controversial amongst these being the IPO of VA Linux Systems, Inc. (LNUX) .

VA Linux Systems, Inc., now known as VA Software, is widely derided as a poster child of the dot-com bust, though inexplicably still in business. At the time of the IPO, VA Linux (Software) shares opened trading at nearly 10 times their $30 offer price, closing the first day of trading at $239.25. This meteoric rise made many early investors rich, strangely on account of a company which purports to sell a hobbyist operating system which can be obtained for free on the Internet. "The VA Linux initial public offering is a prime example of market manipulation in an IPO by investment banks, their customers and the issuing firm," said Steven Schulman, a partner in the law firm Milberg Weiss Bershad Hynes & Lerach, which specializes in filing shareholder suits.

Well, considering that VA Linux (Software) got CSFB into trouble in the first place, it stands to reason that the VA Linux (Software) Board of Directors were complicit in the stock fraud from beginning to end. As the investigation progressed against CSFB, the unscrupulous VA Software/Linux executives, their pockets bulging with filthy lucre plundered from trusting, hard-working investors, must have realized that their days in the country club were numbered if the SEC discovered their wrongdoings.

The SEC, or Securities Exchange Commission, is a federal regulatory agency, and cannot be bribed. Therefore, with a possible stint in federal prison looming large, Larry Augustin and the rest of the crooks, including outspoken gun violence advocate Eric S. Raymond, decided to undertake more active means to halt the investigation.

There are other issues that I didn't go in to -- the major one is case-sensitivity, but there are issues with resource forks (AppleSingle or AppleDouble formats on disk, not sure how it's actually handled) and with extended attributes (the various type and creator bits, etc.). My guess is that Yellow Box or (most) Carbon apps will run fine with UFS, but Bluebox (Classic) applications are much more likely to have problems, if the bluebox even loads at all.

Just for reference, I haven't tested this by installing on UFS (but I think that I'm going to give it a try), so I'm just pulling this right out of my arse.

What is the future of Open Source and Free Software? I asked myself that very question because Open Source and Free Software is the most revolutionary movement today. It is changing everything.

To answer this question I went to slashdot.org, this website, since slashdot is known across the internet when it comes to Open Source and Free Software. I read the stories and the comments. I read the comments at the -1 threshold because I wanted to read real people's opinions and knowledge on Open Source and Free Software, not the sanitized version that gets modded up. What I found was very interesting.

So, what is the future of Open Source and Free Software? Wideness. That's right. Wideness. This concept of wideness is so powerful that it is invading domains beyond computer software. Take HDTV for instance. It is widescreen compared to normal tvs. TV is becoming wider.

The best examples of wideness are from slashdot of course. First, page widening posts. Slashdot pages weren't wide enough so they have to be widened manually. In the future slashdot pages will be wider.

I also found links to the goatse.cx website. Again, another example of wideness, namely a wide open anus. People who use Open Source and Free Software aren't boring heterosexuals. They are homosexuals, bisexuals, etc. As the goatse.cx website shows wideness is being added to the sexuality of Open Source and Free Software users.

I agree with most of what you said. But I think that the child will select and filter the materials in a way appropriate to his development stage. If he is in the menthal stage and wants a pure love, then he might be disgusted by some of the porn, but he will not actively seek it. And accidental exposure to porn is more fiction than fact. I've read some accounts of spam which opens dozens of pop-ups with explicit porn images, but I am extremely sceptical about that. Of course, with almost a billion Net users there will be thousands, may be even millions of those who get a glimpse of porn without actively seeking it, but I think in most cases this is not a problem.

And I believe that simply seeing some porn will not cause any lasting problems, unless a person was already off the rocket. I mean, even finding out that your parents do in fact have sex is probably be a bigger shock for a kid than seeing some images of strangers doing the same.

As for the desensitization and objectification, I agree that this might be a problem for heavy porn users, but unless the child in question already heavily masturbates, watches a lot of porn and dreams about having sex, he is unlikely to have any such effects.

You will probably agree that violence on TV and in video games might have some effect on the children, but you must admit that this effect is extremely weak, given thousands of deaths they witness till they come of age. If we are talking about only accidentally exposing children to porn through unlocked adult sites (no warning, no age verification, etc.), this is unlikely to have any effect at all, given our experience with violence. I.e. just a few people having sex vs. thousands of people killed - what is going to have bigger effect? See an example somewhere in this thread about Starship Troopers where the TV station censored woman's breasts during a love scene, but happily showed that woman being torn in half by the bug on screen.

Let's be realists - one image will not fuck up the kid for life. :)

I'd vote for prison time and sterilization for the irresponsable parents who allow their kids to view pornographic material. There is a world of difference between making something availiable and people choosing to look at it. If a parent has decided to allow their child unsupervised internet access, then the parents (as legal guardians) have made that choice for the child.

Still, puposefully misrepresenting pornographic content as something innocuous should not go unpunished.

One of the goals of Perl 6 is to make non-trivial projects possible. That's good. The way it's being done is bad. Perl was once a lightweight, extremely flexible language. Now it's become a huge ugly monster. People wanted OO, so a nasty hack was bolted on top to allow some semblance of it. Now this nasty hack is being expanded. Sure, the code's different, but the basic form is the same. Kludge upon kludge upon kludge; I'd much rather have a nice, clean, pure language (and not one with loads of irritating whitespace thank you very much).

The same goes for the syntax. All the switching between $, @ and % is really irritating (ask a newbie how to get at the length of the keys array of a hash inside a hash, for example), and the changes proposed for 6 are just making this worse -- it seems that Larry, in his infinite wisdom, wants to prefix every data type with a different hard-to-type character. Perl was only designed for the three data types, and adding more is a mess.

Perl 6 is a complete rewrite, but it keeps all the mess which has accumulated over the previous versions. This is not good. Sure, my const int $var = 27; may look neat (in the same way that, say, Pascal does), but $var isn't entirely constant, or entirely an integer, it's just a hack which makes it sort of behave like one. The whole thing is an exercise in pseudo-computer science masturbation with little real purpose except to please the managers who dislike the one thing that makes Perl special.

On a similar note is regexes. I'm an avid fan of regular expressions simply because a nondeterministic finite automata is far more flexible than linear code. However, Larry must have been smoking that cheap $2 crack when he wrote this. Does he want Perl 6 to be flex or something?

I won't be going on to use 6. It's a nice idea, but it's completely unnecessary. It won't make large projects any easier to manage (the language is still, at heart, an almighty hack -- an impressive one, but still a hack). It won't make OO any cleaner. It won't make development any faster. To put it bluntly, Perl scripts will still look less beautiful than our friend Mr Goatse. I'd prefer to use a language which has always been pure synthesis of science and engineering, not some half-baked imposter.

Perl 6 will be nice, but I'm guessing it will be the end of Perl. It can't do what it wants to do whilst still being based upon a nasty mess. There are now other options, which provide all of Perl's power and none of the mess. Sorry, but *BSD^H^H^H^H Perl is dying. Larry is buggering it up the ass without lubricants, just like Shoeboy is doing to Larry's daughter.
