Deeper problem: casino economy soaks up cash...
If everyone stuck all their cash and other non-cash funds into their mattresses, it is basic mainstream economics that we would have a huge financial depression from lack of currency for exchange. So, why do mainstream economists have trouble understanding that the same thing happens if take all that money and instead stuff it into computers in the digital equivalent of a casino frequented mostly by the wealthiest (the stock market, derivatives, currency speculation, etc.), where the money spends all its time in transactions have little relation to the real goods and services that most people spend all their money on?
My take on that was from an idea I first saw a glimmering of in "Money As Debt II":
http://paulgrignon.netfirms.co...
"Today the largest volume of money by far is changing hands in what is best described as the gambling economy... the foreign exchange market, the derivatives market and the rest of the financial instruments being played by banks and investment funds for as much profit as possible. For example, the volume of trade on the world's foreign exchange markets, in just one week, exceeds the total volume of world trade in real goods and services during an entire year. This money is in continuous play by speculators looking to make windfall profits on currency fluctuations. It exists... but only in the gambling economy."Your tax on transactions could help with reducing the FIRE-sector casino economy by discouraging so much trading, but it does not get at the root of things like wealth concentration, since wealthy people could still just park money in cash or gold or real estate. A progressive income tax going up to 90%+ like we had in the USA decades ago, with the revenue redistributed as a basic income might help with wealth concentration. So might a wealth tax (but that is harder). Modest inflation also discourages hording money by forcing wealthy people to spend money, invest it, or lose it.
Other alternatives to keep things going despite an absence of cash for the real economy due to it being stuffed into computers include more LETS systems (alternative currency that promotes community), making what little currency there is in the real economy move faster, expanding the gift economy, improved subsistence production, and better government planning using current tax dollars.
So much of our wealth today is the product of generations of hard work by so many people including those creating inventions and other new ideas building on previous ideas, and in that sense is effectively a common inheritance. C.H. Douglas talked about with "Social Credit":

One reason the old stuff sounds better
... is the power supplies in the old gear. They had big stiff transformers and soup can sized capacitors which supplied a big reservoir of energy for bass transients. When they rated something at 50W per channel, they weren't fudging the specs.
The mid 70s was the high water mark of home audio, in so far as sound quality is concerned. Those beautiful Pioneer, Marantz, Kenwood, Fisher and Lafeyettes were the receivers to have. Many are still in the hands of collectors. I'm particularly partial to Pioneers made in '74-'75.

Re:Terminal Terminology
Here's the misunderstanding again. Back in the day, age 35 did _not_ mean you'd have gray hair, or show signs of premature aging that technology has magically erased or pushed back.
As for preexisting causes of death:
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, it's main cause is from smoking.
http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Leading-Causes-Of-Lung-Cancer&id=162376Heart disease--though the leading cause of death with cancer second, it's second on this list since it has a ridiculous number of causes--has many risk factors that can be directly attributed to more advancements in society:
Smoking
Physical inactivity
Obesity

Definition 1, Definition 2, etc.
Yes, and the definition of specialty coffee includes the use of freshly-roasted beans (defined here on the interweb). That's a perfectly reasonable definition, but certainly doesn't apply to most of the coffee I've seen at counters that claimed to be selling "specialty coffee."
Just because you know one reasonable definition for a term doesn't mean that all other definitions are wrong. Open Source, meaning that the source is open for people to read, is very usefully suggested for things like voting machines. In this case, the manufacturers should be required to open their source to the public so independent (or even hostile) outsiders can validate their code, but there is no reason to require them to allow the code to be modified and used by one of their competitors.

Don't use textbooks
As a former High School InfoTech student and current College Programming Student, I really don't find textbooks that useful at all. Truthfully, the only use I ever get out of textbooks (other than reading the questions the teacher's assign) is reading the examples and the using the reference section.
Not only do examples and references exist on the web, but it is SO much easier to use a reference with hyperlinks than to have to jump between pages of a book
If you really need some good ideas I have a list of resourses:
- CodeSyntax - Basis syntax for Java,C,Python,etc
- JavaBat - different levels of Java puzzles (ajax handles compiling/etc, no software required)
- Eddie's Basic Guide to C Programming
- ANSI Dictionary - unbelievably nice ANSI dictionary, fully cross-referenced.Consider setting up a wiki-book full of information, labs, excersies and tutorials. This is a computer class after all and information should be easy to find without needing to pack yet ANOTHER heavy book around. To make your job easier, you could allow the students to add stuff to the wiki (log activity of course), even setting up a page where they can add useful websites they've found.

Re:Say what?!?
... Presumably everyone already has the right to fork Qt.Everyone who wants to is explicitly granted that right.
However, there is economy of scale and for the most part things go forward fastest with fewer forks. So it behooves us for a few vocal suits at Nokia to get treated for their apparent R-CIS before it gets worse and in case it is contagious. It can strike anybody, but suits seem more succeptible.

Alibates Dolomite 'Flint' Found In Oldest US Archaeological Sites
The single source of the hardest 'flint' material (a dolomite) in North America comes from the panhandle of Texas, quarried at Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alibates_Flint_Quarri es_National_Monument , with the site protected and preserved by the US Parks Service from the 1960s http://www.texasbeyondhistory.net/alibates/images/ smithsonian-letter.html .
The only quarries known that produced it are located near Lake Meredith reservoir and recreation area 30 miles north of Amarillo, Texas. http://www.texasbeyondhistory.net/alibates/ Alibates Dolomite, #9 (out of 10) in the harden scale, is found in most ancient archaeological sites across the USA; from the east and west coasts - including throughout the Great Lakes and plains regions of North America; being much more sturdy and harder than obsidian (a black, brittle volcanic glass) or chert (though a hard sedimentary rock) that's 'softer' than Alibates flint.
Seashells, beads, pipestone, some tools and ornaments derived from those regions have been found with Alibates flint in most of the oldest North American excevations; including the: Yuma man area, Folsom man http://folsommuseum.netfirms.com/folsomman.htm , Sandia man and Clovis man http://members.tripod.com/wksmith/ews.html digs plus others. One distinctive trait of the manufacture of Alibates points is a 'blood gutter' (of sorts) that is not on the points on display in the article http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?chanId=sa003&arti cleId=EB7B89C4-E7F2-99DF-3FEB5E35D73EE583 .
Also - the color of Alibates, though greatly varied, tends to have translucent striated streaks and swirls in many shades generally from purple to white. Aside from the spear and arrow points; other tools include: knives, scrapers, awls (leather punches) and hatchet heads all made from Alibates Flint. As these implements have been found in digs across the continent; clearly there was thriving industry and associated nation-wide trade, dating from well over 10,000 years ago.
Most of the 'oldest' 'man' digs in North America, discovered thus far, being between 10,000 to 15,000 years old; after the glaciers melted ( http://folsommuseum.netfirms.com/folsomman.htm , come complete with tools made of Alibates Flint. Respectfully submitted by: Robert Hertner -

Re:Make your own mascarpone!
Okay, cheese making 101.
Acids and heat are what coagulate protein. Coagulated proteins are what make cheese. When you use a culture, you are introducing bacteria to the milk that convert sugars to acids, along with dozens or hundreds of other compounds, which will then coagulate the proteins, along with cooking the milk. Rennet, another important cheese-making ingredient, is an enzyme that makes the curds larger and harder, thus making it easier to get more whey out of the way.
The bacterial culture you use determines what of the many flavor compounds you end up with, which is in large part why there are so many different cheeses out there (texture has a lot to do with it, too, and that gets into pressing and such).
With mascarpone and cottage cheese, you introduce an acid straight into the hot milk, which short-circuits the entire bacterial culture step described above. No rennet means you get small, soft curds which creates a soft, creamy texture.
Want to make a basic cottage cheese?
1 gallon 2% milk (organic would be good)
1/2 cup distilled vinegar
1 tsp salt
Heat the milk up to about 190 Degrees F. Turn off the heat, and add the vinegar, then allow the milk to cool. After cooling, pour it into a mesh strainer to get rid of the whey. Put the curds into a bowl and stir in the salt.

Maximum Compression has efficiency comparisons
Since the original site seems to be really slow and split into a billion pages, those who aren't aware of it might want to look at MaximumCompression since it has tests for several file formats and also has a multiple file compression test that is sorted by efficiency. A program called SBC does the best, but the much more common WinRAR comes in a respectable third.

Re:Sounds cool but...
When did the GP mention Iraq?
Your going to look at the GP and not tell me that Iraq is not implied?
Then you sir need to wake up and read the news.
The "just following orders" line makes no sense. Do you accept no responsibility for your own actions? Did you not choose to sign up? You can't use someone else as an excuse for your actions.
when push comes to shove the actions on the battle field, out side the initial order to "take that hill" ect..., are the decisions made at that moment, and are the sole property of the soldier
I signed up to protect the way of life we have in the USA.
But the decision to go to war is made way over the common soldiers head. Now if your going to talk about innocent civilians getting caught in the middle of a war, it is an unfortunate consequence of a necessary evil.
Let's talk about the cost of war
WW2 body count
ww1 body count
Iraq body count
I would say by those numbers the civilian toll of this war is on a good track, as is the military toll in this war. We have learned for our experiences, we have learned how to reduce the number of civilian causalities by using more precise strikes, and reduce the military casualties by better training and equipment.
That brings this conversation full circle. This item will help the US soldiers in Iraq stay healthy and in the battle longer, not as much time will be spent in the hospital treating heat stroke and other heat related injuries.
If you would like to continue this conversation I will be happy to, but this topic dose not need more disruption like this in it. This topic is about the technology of war, not the politics. Feel free to e-mail me I have time this week. -
The decline of civilizationsFrom Innate Social Aptitudes of Man by W. D. Hamilton
The incursions of barbaric pastoralists seem to do civilizations less harm in the long run than one might expect. Indeed, two dark ages and renaissances in Europe suggest a recurring pattern in which a renaissance follows an incursion by about 800 years. It may even be suggested that certain genes or traditions of pastoralists revitalize the conquered people with an ingredient of progress which tends to die out in a large panmictic population for the reasons already discussed. I have in mind altruism itself, or the part of the altruism which is perhaps better described as self-sacrificial daring. By the time of the renaissance it may be that the mixing of genes and cultures (or of cultures alone if these are the only vehicles, which I doubt) has continued long enough to bring the old mercantile thoughtfulness and the infused daring into conjunction in a few individuals who then find courage for all kinds of inventive innovation against the resistance of established thought and practice. Often, however, the cost in fitness of such altruism and sublimated pugnacity to the individuals concerned is by no means metaphorical, and the benefits to fitness, such as they are, go to a mass of individuals whose genetic correlation with the innovator must be slight indeed. Thus civilization probably slowly reduces its altruism of all kinds, including the kinds needed for cultural creativity (see also Eshel 1972).

CPS 2500 is a dumbed-down 2000
I believe you are mistaken. I *think* the CPS 2000 was the most powerful Super Soaker ever made. It was modified to become the 2500 with a differnt, less-coherent nozzle after some injuries (retinal detachment? i forget.) caused by the 2000. I believe there was also a wussified version of the 2000 released as a stopgap before the 3000 and its less-coherent water stream.
I had a friend in college with one-- it was truly impressive. Of course, it was empty after like two shots because of the size of the stream of water it produced.

Re:Question.
I'd rather have someone who I agree with and think is qualified and only disagree with them on this one issue rather than someone with whom I only agree on their abortion stance.
Agreed, single issue voting is destructive to good and healthy democracy. And this exactly leads into the next point...
I'm curious as to why people on both sides of the abortion debate place it so highly.
About 2/3 of the public do not want to overturn Roe v Wade and about 1/3 do. A substantial portion of that 1/3 are indeed single issue voters. The abortion-is-murder group. The Republican leadership has been using and abusing it as a wedge issue.
I think very few people who want to uphold Roe v Wade do so with single issue determination, and as a 2/3 position they ordinarily have no need to. If there any signifigant number of pro-choice voters actually "placed the issue so highly" then with a 2-to-1 majority all elections involving the issue would be a forgone conclusions. With a 2-1 majority almost all elected officials would be pro-choice *if* pro-choice had any substantion single-issue base. However the pro-choice side does often need to take notice and respond to the intense and magnified single-issue-abortion-is-murder politics.
There were... and are... abortion-is-murder activists who have said and are saying that they handed Bush the election on this single-issue-basis. Saying that he *MUST* make good on his "promise" to them to make a Supreme Court appointment on a single-issue-basis. Powerful activists, Bush's own supporters, who have said that they will raise bloody hell if Bush "betrays" them.
I recall one of the debates in Bush's reelection campaign where he was asked about Supreme Court appointments. Bush answered that he had no litmus test for Supreme Court judges, being careful not to alienate the pro-choice majority, but then his answer was dominated by a bizzare tangent. A bizzare tangent that slipped past most of the public as meaningless jibberish. A tangent about the Dred Scott Supreme Court case. The key point here being that the abortion-is-murder camp often equate Roe v Wade to the Dred Scott case. See here and here. Bush was speaking out of both sides of his mouth. To most of the public he said that he would not appoint judges on a single issue basis, while he said "in code" to his abortion-is-murder base that he would absolutely positively only appoint a judge that would overturn Roe v Wade in exactly the same way Dred Scott was overturned.
Here's the transcript from the debate:
QUESTIONER: Mr. President, if there were a vacancy in the Supreme Court and you had the opportunity to fill that position today, who would you choose and why?
BUSH: I'm not telling.
(LAUGHTER)
I really don't have -- haven't picked anybody yet. Plus, I want them all voting for me.
(LAUGHTER)
I would pick somebody who would not allow their personal opinion to get in the way of the law. I would pick somebody who would strictly interpret the Constitution of the United States.
Let me give you a couple of examples, I guess, of the kind of person I wouldn't pick.
I wouldn't pick a judge who said that the Pledge of Allegiance couldn't be said in a school because it had the words "under God" in it. I think that's an example of a judge allowing personal opinion to enter into the decision-making process as opposed to a strict interpretation of the Constitution.
Another example would be the Dred Scott case, which is where judges, years ago, said that the Constitution allowed slavery because of personal property rights.
That's a personal opinion. That's not what the Constitution says. The Constitution of the United States says we're all -- you know, it doesn't say that. It doesn't speak to the equality of America.
And so, I would pick people that would be strict constructionists. We've -
Re:women?
No, CS is already a big enough sausage-fest as it is. You're lucky to see 10% women. We don't need any more men in CS. I can't think of any reason why CS should have such an uneven number of men and women, other subjects are much more balanced. No wonder there's a drop in applicants, what healthy straight male wants to be surrounded by other men all day every day?
Also if you want more women in the field, then increase the quality of the men. It should be a dream for women to be in a class where it's 90% men, but they're hardly top-shelf men. Imagine how many men would go into a female-dominated field if the average class looked like this:
http://fatreality.netfirms.com/images/pict0053.jpg
I can't see many signing up.
It will definitely psychologically damage a straight-male by denying him female contact in the way that CS courses do, and based on my experience of CS would be enough to turn women into lesbians. -

Let me guess, you're a democrat who's still whining about how your party has no ideas besides we're not republicans. Here's a joke for you:
A Republican and a Democrat were walking down the street when they came to a homeless person. The Republican gave the homeless person his Businesscard and told him to come to his office for a job. He then took 20 bucks out of his pocket and gave it to the homeless guy. The Democrat was very impressed , and when they came to another homeless person , he decided to help. He walked over to the homeless guy and gave him directions to the welfare office. He then reached into the Republicans pocket and gave the homeless person 50 bucks. Now you understand the difference between Democrats and Republicans. -
Handhelds don't really cut it...
There is really no way a wireless, battery powered handheld is cheaper than a desktop PC of the same capability (or even double the capability). This is really not a solution for the Third World.
Look at similar efforts going on in other parts of the world like IT@School in Kerala. They are expermenting with LTSP servers and thin clients - where small local firms have support contracts. (Hell !!.. they even sell GNU/Hurd cds). Also all the textbooks are available on PDF as well.Pumping money into the third world will not solve its problems , neither will hitech handhelds. It's about awareness - a trickle down approach of feeding information. With the right political support (there's a government change soon for Kerala), it might actually work.

The console too good for Sega to kill is BACK......and now it has a handy flip-up LCD screen.
I thought someone was trolling/kidding about the Treamcast but apparently it does exist. No, that's not a typo...that's what the HK wizards who built it call it.
There is precious little info in the reviews I linked to. The dcemu.co.uk review mentioned an empty modem slot...will a DC modem fit the slot? How about the Broadband adapter? What about usage of all my DC goodies with this machine...some of the stuff I like to play requires not one, but two VMUs to make it work like I like it, and I have favorite controllers I use. The one that comes with the Treamcast looks pretty lame. And what about The Typing Of The Dead? Can I plug in my SegaNet keyboard and type some zombie ass to Kingdom Come?
Despite the unanswered questions, the Treamcast suggests there's life in the old platform yet, regardless of Sega killing it before its time. Between the fanboys writing new games for it and the legally questionable but laudable in many other respects manufacture of this brand new version of the platform what remains of Sega is probably kicking itself.

Re:Gmail- no IMAP
You moved from IMAP to web only email? Heh
For me its the other way.. I have a gmail account but its only for novelty. Gmail users started getting invites quite regularly from last week or so.. Gmail's nice(damn fast) but I need one feature it doesn't offer-IMAP mail. I have a 1GB hosting account and only 50MB is used for hosting.. so the rest is available for email.
A few days back, my yahoo account was near its limit and I received a warning about it. The very next email was from yahoo again, this time to notify that my storage had increased.
But the madness for gmail accounts is amazing. In orkut there are like 40 communities setup to beg for invitations. The largest is 1000 odd members and there's even 1 that says "we hate gmail" so that some gmail member with invites might stop by and have pity on those pathetics(is that a word?).
My wild guess about when gmail is available to the public?- About a week before Google's IPO.
It would give users enough time to use gmail and probably become interested in buying a few shares( this reasoning's wrong but who knows).
The other guess is that gmail will not become public until a much later time. Once it becomes open to the public, millions will sign up for accounts.. maybe google wants to do it in a phased manner. Invites might continue to increase from say 3 a day to 10-20. This is a lot more orderly and won't overburden the servers.. I don't know, I'm just talking out of my ass. -
