re: battle system
i haven't played the game, but penny arcade's gabe sez that the battle system changes once you get through a crazy long tutorial phase.
http://www.penny-arcade.com/news/show/21973// -
If you enjoyed Vagrant Story...... I think you're going to love this game. The score sounds like it's Vagrant Story 2, the animation and character models are like an upgraded version, the voice acting is stellar, the script is superb - and the battle system is so much fun once you really get into it. It's no surprise, since it's the same core team. Probably the best part about the game though is the actitechture and overall design - it's so very atmospheric, there's just so much mood to everything. The tone of the game is much more mature than previous FF's. I could go on but I'd rather get back to playing right now actually
:)Gabe from Penny-Arcade has a review of his first 20 hours with the game that I think is spot on.
http://www.penny-arcade.com/news/show/21973
This game does for Final Fantasy what Resident Evil 4 did for Resident Evil - it reinvents itself and succeeds in surpassing its predecessors in nearly every way.

Re:Also boring
Gabe from Penny-Arcade originally agreed with you, but then he saw the light

Nerf Longshot CS-6
Nerf makes a sniper rifle now. It has no accuracy to speak of, but it's just cool. I'm happy.
The Penny Arcade guys know how to appreciate it.
You guys need far too much to be happy.

Re:That doesn't seem like alotThat misses the point of the AC parent. I could be updating it if I knew the subject, yes. But what if I didn't know the subject? How would I know it's wrong? I either have to be researching the subject anyway, in which case I wouldn't be using information from Wikipedia or I would have to just have a passing interest in the subject without being particularly concerned if it's wrong.
Tycho from Penny Arcade said it best, and this is a point that has never been addressed.

That should be interesting.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm going to be ordering the Playstation 5 from eBay instead.
I feel sorry for you losers stuck with your obsolete gaming technology! -
Re:Good luck
"OK Geoff, you have stumbled into the long raging debate in some circles as to why it is referred to as The Agency or The Company. Each group has its preferences and the usage is based upon where you place your allegiances."
Well, Geoff's unnecessary cock-etry aside, if it's an ongoing debate why did you feel the need to weigh in and correct him, hmmm? Hmmm?
And why does there have to be a debate? Can't two different groups of people have... oh, I dunno... two different names for the same thing?
And really, posting a link to his photo is just lame. People post bits of information. Bits of information can be linked up. Does that make it ok to point any passing nutter to a picture of the guy, from a completely unrelated online discussion? Learn some netiquette, dude, or some day you may well find you wife's maiden name, your home address, and you inside leg measurement splashed all over Slashdot too.
Plus, y'know... the fact that you obviously took the time to go cyberstalking some random poster who called you a cock on the internet.. well... kind of suggests he might be right.
And before getting so het up in future you might want to take some time to meditate upon John Gabriel's Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory - there are a lot of idiots on the net, and if you're going to personally lay the smack down on every single one... well... I'd get an RSI brace for your smackdown-ing arm, pronto. -
Re:No thanks
As much as I'm a supporter of the VC and plan to buy games off of there, I do understand why people have objections to paying for the same old games again...

Re:Victory for Gamers
It means that they are less likely to impose onerous restrictions on games being made. I have no problems with a game like GTAIII not being sold to minors, similar to R and NC-17 movies. I do have problems with Congress passing additional laws that would, say, destroy the ESRB and replace it with a new board of Congress-appointed stooges.

Re:It may not be a good browser, but....
FYI: If you don't want to do all the grunt work yourself, you can install a custom urlfilter.ini to your user profile and have those ads listed block automatically (just like Adblock). I'm sure you can scour Google for various filters, however the few listed in this thread http://www.penny-arcade.com/forums/viewtopic.php?
t =1073836199 should suit the needs of an average user.
Of course, you can still block individual ads or whole urls or specific directories of urls in addition to using the custom urlfilter.ini. Anything additional you block just adds itself right to the filter, which makes it easy to back up your preferences. -
Re:protected mode browsers ..
Just look at Penny Arcade's RSS feed. If you use a browser that supports client-side XSL templates, you will see the RSS/XML transformed into an HTML web page. If you want to sort on columns or other IE7 features that another poster mentioned, I'm sure some Javascript could be added for that. And the great thing about this is that the browser only has to support XML and XSL(T), so any other XML data can be transformed into HTML pages, not just RSS. And it's all under the control of the person making the data available, so it's consistent across browsers. But I'm thinking that's something that Microsoft is actively opposed to...

Re:No link between the Nintendo and Sony numbers
I believe this argument has been dealt with before, but far more prominent gamers than myself. Namely, Gabe and Tycho.
Start at the Fifth Paragraph:
http://www.penny-arcade.com/2006/09/15
In short, the idea that somehow spending an extra $250 (at the very least) somehow saves you money is rather ridiculous. -
Not entirely analogous but...
This reminds me of the time when John Smedley sent 1200 Krispy Kreme donuts to Penny Arcade. Arguably he was trying to give them diabetes and put an end to their assault on SOE, but it's entirely possible that bitter hatred and its lesser cousins, disdain and irritation, are no obstacle to having a sense of humour.

Leave it to Gabe and Tycho.
Funny, but I think Penny-Arcade got it right a while back. Their style, in this instance, ought to be emulated.

Re:This is an outrage
I can understand that you feel children shouldn't be playing games like GTA and maybe Bully, I don't know what's in it yet besides bullies and boys kissing. But two things...
It doesn't matter if you're trying to put a criminal in jail or sue the family who broke his leg while he tried to break in, you don't get to take over the court. If Jack Thompson can't make a case without threatening, making blind accusations, and harrassing, then he should very well be held in contempt.
Also, it's not Take Two's fault that children are playing these games any more than it is the movie industries fault that children are watching R-rated movies or pornography. It doesn't matter how much you bubble up a kid, if you don't educate him and monitor his TV/internet/video game/whatever time, it's not anyone's fault but yours if he learns about killing and thinks it's a good idea.
But seriously, Jack Thompson is a mad man. I once thought that maybe there was some essence of good in him, that perhaps there was something more behind him than just video game hating and that he was trying to better our community. But then I did some research and found out he'll disregard your thoughts, intelligence, comments, and presence the moment he finds out you're affiliated to video games at the slightest. He will not only pass off what you're saying as insignificant, he'll insult and threaten you for it as well. Just look up some of his encounters with some writers, or my favorites, with VGCats and Penny Arcade. -

Why sad?
Neverwinter Nights 2 has gone gold, happily, with an October 31st release date placing it on the same day as Final Fantasy XII and making me very sad.
Buy the real RPG (NN2) and screw the non-interactive non-game.
Or, if you're a real masochist and insist on watching a 40-hour+ crappy game-rendered movie, buy them both. -

I know this is a bit of a harsh response, but for Warhammer fans this is a bit of a sore spot. 6 Mouths, and all that.

Re:Ahh Jack...
It's definitely a good thing to allow judicial access to anyone with a beef. And maybe the first time this happens, you listen to them intently, give them as much leeway as necessary to make their case, and finally rule against them when it's clear they don't have a clue.
The fifth time, they should get a curt hearing, a cursory glance, and a "stop wasting my time" look. The tenth time...
Let's see what Thompson has had beefs with, shall we?
He has:
Sued the State of Florida to get the Florida Bar ruled unconstitutional.
Repeatedly filed baseless criminal harassment charges against radio stations, cartoonists, and other public figures.
Ironically, is known for threatening and harassing behavior, and has been removed from trials for such.
Charged Janet Reno with placing homosexual promotional material in public schools.
Sued 2-Live-Crue over obsenity in their work, lost, then followed up suing over their victory song about the first amendment.
Publically offered to make a 10,000 dollar donation to charity, then withdrew the offer as "satire."
Repeatedly tries to get obsenity charges against music, losing pretty much every time.
Has faced disbarrment charges. Was required by the Florida bar to prove self sane.
Has had repeated high-profile civil cases on behalf of bereaved parents against the entertainment industry, and hasn't won a single one.
With a list like that, the time for maximum allowable leeway has passed. Real people have real problems for the courts to solve. Wasting 100 hours of the court's time to play this game isn't going to help anybody.
(Full disclosure, I make videogames. Oh the Evil!) -
Re:Its silly to get a console on release
How many consoles have we gone through that had problems on release? Everything from the DS Lite cracking, to the xbox controllers being the size of a small gorilla, to the xbox360 over heating, to faulting dvd roms of the ps2. Its almost at the point where its guaranteed to have a flaw in it. And i feel worse for people who buy it on ebay at an extra $500/pop.
Wow, I must be blessed! My launch-day (actually week-before-launch-day, non-import) DS Lite still hasn't cracked its hinges. I liked the old big Xbox controllers (and the comparison is to an eight hundred pound grizzly bear). My launch window Xbox 360 has never overheated, and my purchased-pre-owned-yet-still-old PS2 has never had DVD issues. I did go through several original Xbox consoles due to bad DVD drives, but that wasn't in your list of "Bad Things That Happen At Launch".
