Re:Games on Mac
Agreed. What's worse is, if a game is still remotely popular and has an online component (Q3A for instance), when the Mac users get online, they're smacked down by all the cockmongers who have been playing for months without sleep, food or light, on the PC side. I ran my own server for a choice few Mac (fanboys|friends|owners|gamerz) for a while until we could join the larger community and hold our own.

Re:Allow individual users/licensee's to participatOuch. Seems time for a reality byte in that vein:
1. Microsoft gets sued, rather nastily, by a whole lot of disgruntled customers. Fear not, peons - Longhorn cometh, with so much added value that you'll be *begging* us to raise the price!
Unless you want WinFS. Or a pre-2006 ship date. Or an OS sans virii.
2. Microsoft's lawyers make a buck, so do everyone else's. Life goes on.
3. Millions of 31337 h4xx0rs stab at Microsoft, PA-Style
4. The YRO section grows ever larger...

Betamax and BeOS I can understand. Divx? Pay-per-view Divx? Zero to drunk in $20 Divx? I'm intrigued; what technically inferior technology knocked Divx out?

Re:i hate skins
You assume there is a good skin out there somewhere. I've yet to find one for any app I use. This is a pretty good observation of the user experience provided by most "good" themes.

Re:Different From The Old Days
it's happened more than once that someone I recognize cuts me off or drives rudely around me - then they recognize me and their face changes.
Might I direct your attention to the greater Internet Fuckwad theory?

Re:Different From The Old DaysAs usuall penny-arcade got the strip that says it all.
People need to be watched to behave. Those who don't believe that live in a dream world. Remove control and you get anarachy and anarchy is not freedom, it is enslavement by whoever happens to have the biggest gun.
There will always be people who get enjoyment from cause grieve to other people. In the real world we spend billions each year combatting them through the legal system. On the net we have no such protection so a community like
/. needs all kind of protection. No empty posts, need to wait between posts, no fancy html, signup, ip bans. All because some people enjoy destroying things. Most of these people are very sad creatures as well. One person I know is involved with GNAA actually spend time bitching on IRC about how a guy was downloading the same file over and over again and how this was a DOS attack and how he would complain the guys ISP and get him banned.
Yet when asked if he wasn't doing the same with GNAA he just couldn't get it.
I am sure a shrink could make a case study out of that guy. I am not a shrink and just think that guy is a sad fucktard who in his real life is nothing and needs the net to pretend to have any meaning.
The internet can be used for great things. Some use it to create Linux, some use it to cause grieve. For now the creators are in the fast majority but the vandals will never go away.

Re:We live in ficticious times, with a ficticiousGuess what? Out of the 7 or 8 dvd playing devices I've ever owned, not ONE of them fails to read either format (including PS2).
I "own" about 50, counting all of the gear I support at work. (I'm a media tech as well as computer geek according to my job description.) The newer Dell and YumCha White Box PC drives are happy with both. Macintosh DVD drives are not happy with DVD+R (both the old ones go apeshit at CD-RW and the newer ones that don't) , although I haven't tested the drive of the one G5 we have. The cheap ChaYum $50 DVD player we picked up for emergency hot swaps and the couple 4-year old Panasonic DVD players only talk to -R as well, but the genuine RCA Div-X player that I picked up for $10 from a freind who was moving plays anything I throw at it. On the other hand, we've an early RCA player at the job that won't touch anything but true DVD-ROM. I'm not a consoler, so I can't testify on those. I will note that nothing likes DVD-RAM but DVD-RAM, but we knew that going in.
I currently recommend -R for compatibility if you don't know what device you'll be trying to play it on. For newer devices, your odds are very good for either + or -, but for older gear, I've seen about 95% compatibiltiy for -R and 20% compatibility for +R.

Penny-Arcade Strikes again
I suppose there are many other PA fans out there linking to the very thing this article alludes to as referenced in an old PA cartoon.
I searched, but couldn't find another reference.

Re:What puzzles me
If I understand the question properly, then in answer I'd point to places like Homestar Runner, PvP, Penny-Arcade, etc. all of which grew up on free distribution of their art and have become well known both on and off the Internet. If you think they're not cultural icons, I'd offer Homestar Runner's 'Trogdor' character showing up in the Final Episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or the infamous Cardboard Tube of Penny Arcade appearing in Legacy of Kain 3.
Or do they not count for some reason? :) -

Penny Arcade's Take On CS:Source

Terrible piece...
This is such an apologist piece. From author's viewpoint, this is a done deal, copy protection is a necessity, and he doesn't address the issue of fair use at all. When I buy my videogames, I rarely install them, instead preferring to find a cracked version first, so I don't have to deal with all of the crap, like unwanted driver installations, that I don't know if I'm getting. The guys at Penny Arcade have said the same as well.
I don't play games without purchasing them (though I did as a student, because I was poor then. If I hadn't then, I probably wouldn't have the gaming drive now that causes me to purchase all of the games I do.), and I'm starting to buy less and less PC games because of the crap I have to deal with. Do you hear that, developers? That is the sound of lost sales.
I bought XIII, which had some protection that caused the graphics and performance to slowly degrade if the CD is not in the drive. Normally, I would have kept that game to play again in the future, but instead I found someone who was looking to buy it, and gave it to them instead. One more lost sale.
Could you imagine if a PS2 game you bought installed updated CD/DVD drivers on the memory card, and it caused problems with reading other discs? How about if you couldn't play games on your PS2 just becaused you owned an Action Replay disc? They can be used to play copied games too, you know. This sort of crap is unacceptable, and developers who realize that are in a unique position to capture extra market share. Sure, writing a crappy game won't get you sales, but with two equally good games, there are definitely people who will choose the one that doesn't treat them like a criminal if they know there is a difference.

GameSpy Does it again
From the article: "Dave 'Fargo' Kosak of GameSpy.com predicts: Here at GameSpy the general consensus is that the Sony handheld will blow the market wide open -- our editors often consider it to be the "iPod of Gaming," the must-have peripheral that'll make portables cool."
I'd take this more seriously if it came from a source with a shred of journalistic integrity. These are, after all, the people who listed such classics as Donkey Kong Country, Halo, and Quake 2 in their "Top 25 Most Overrated Games of All Time" list. Considering the fact that all three of these games are generally considered to be excellent by most gamers years after their release, they're obviously not overhyped. This is compounded when you consider, as Penny Arcade aptly notes, that Gamespy plays as much a part in the hype machine as anyone else. It's rather obvious that they were picked by Gamespy to create controversy instead of presenting a list of games that deserve the shame of being called overhyped. It seems to me that the "iPod of gaming" remark is yet another of these gambits, aimed more at ushering more hits their way than providing any useful information. -

Ever seen Casshern?Erm, granted probably not (btw Casshern is a movie released recently in Japan. See here (bottom of page) for a PA rant on it.)
That's almost exactly what the movie suggests: that we are a message and we can pass the same message onward. Won't say too much lest I ruin the movie for yall though, as much as I realize it has but a small chance of ever making it to the states. (wonders about the prospects of Cutie Honey in the same vein.)

Gorillas need not apply...
Those with large hands may not achieve the same typing speed as users with small to average sized hands.
I guess this is the opposite of the giant XBox controller fiasco then?
Seriously though, this would be great for a hacked XBox or PS2 Linux, but do they honestly think deskbound users will use it because "the AlphaGrip allows you to shift your body position frequently or even constantly without affecting your data input." I meam come on people, take a 5 minute break for gods' sake. Just get up and walk around or stretch. You don't need a $100 device to do it for you.

Re:OP: Answers
I've taken to linking this Penny Arcade strip whenever I hear a zealot mention M$ (and I'm as anti-microsoft as you get; this is being typed on a Mac and there's a Mandrake box whirring away next to it). It's suprisingly effective since even if the strip accurately represents the poster, they tend to shut up in an effort to keep self respect and not face the ridicule of the community, plus it helps them see how they appear to the great unwashed who they had hoped to convert.

Re:The "Mainstream"
Agreed.
This PA seems to fit pretty well. The G4 people act as though they wouldn't know a game if it bit them on the ass.
G4 only seems interested in getting whatever second-rate celebs they can corral, shoving controllers in their hands, and trying to pass them off as "gamers"...
