Maybe NoCD patches are the latest in the industry?
Warcraft 3 v1.21b patch didn't had any changes in the game except nocd, which was indeed very nice, one do wonder why it took them so long though.

Re:Maybe...
boards for epileptic support shouldn't be written with javascript and image upload ability in the first place? Just a thought.
I almost bitchslapped you down as Overrated but decided to reply instead. Those boards are using standard PHP BBS packages off the shelf. They're already pretty buggy; on the EFA you keep getting immediately logged out, you keep losing posts, etc. Surprisingly epileptics don't tend to be experts at putting together crackerjack bulletin boards secure from unconventional cyberattacks that nobody anticipates, like asshats uploading strobe light movies. I guess they have to shut down their mailing lists, too, in case a Scientologist uploads an attachment.
Most of the seizure-induced hallucinations I get while staring at a computer screen happen when I'm using Eclipse. Blocks of code start disappearing into blind spots or they fly across the screen but somehow remain at their home positions. It's actually kind of annoying because I know I have 20 minutes to check the shit in. Although it's visually-related epilepsy, it doesn't seem to be photosensitive so a trick like this probably wouldn't work. It's more shocking and insulting than anything. But one thing I will say about epilepsy is that you have to put up with a surprising amount of shit from people. -

Old information. 1.1 players are out, 2.0 will be out early this spring.
Since its been announced at CES that the PS3 will include an update to support Profile 2.0 in a future firmware, does that mean that 2.0 players are available now? (an that they have been for a little over a year? :) ) -
Re:This is cool
I got old (fat) PSP for Christmas so I spent some time modding it out and here's what I've found.
4gb memory sticks can be found for $60 online and are a great investment.
You can use this program to backup your UMD disks and then compress them, put them on the memory stick, and tada.
iR Shell is awesome, it provides a the ability to control IR devices, nice skinnable shell, good file browser, lets you switch out of games (think alt-tab), play MP3s while you're playing a game and mute game music, toggle CPU speed, do adhoc wifi transfers between PSPs, take screenshots and much more, you can find a larger list of features (and the un-official forum) here.
PSP Vault has a very nice downloads section, tons of guides and very active forums.
Psp-homebrew has a great list of homebrew you can sort by firmware version. compatibility
QJ.net is another good resource.
PSP Radio lets you stream internet radio on your PSP.
There are NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, Sega Genesis, Neo-Geo, N64, Atari 2600, C64 and probably others.
Wifisniffer is a great probably that does just what it says.
PSP Weather is another good one.
PSP HTTPD lets you use your psp as a webserver.
Portable VNC lets you control your PC with your PSP and there is software that will let you use your PSP as your gamepad for your PC.
PSP XTI is a TI-92 (Graphing calculator) emulator for the PSP. GPS is soon coming to the PSP (USA only), it will be available as a UMD but no release date or price has been set.
There are many others, just browse the file collections and forums.
If you have a PSP with the factory firmware and wish to downgrade it can be an annoying process, it depends on what version firmware you're running.
This forum post as has the information you need.
Used PSPs can be had for less than $100 in stores near me, including a 1gb pro-duo stick, I think I've squeezed $100 worth of features out of it.

Every heard the saying, the family that plays together stays together?
That was a title of a magazine article back in 2002 (I can't remember for the life of me the magazine... Fast Company?). It detailed a few families that played online games together. Google that phrase... there are plenty of instances of families playing World of Warcraft, for instance. My wife and I (our children are 2 and 7 months) play Everquest together when the children are in bed. On our server there are a few families that play together - the most notable is a full group of five players that are all the same race (Froglock) and have similar sounding names. They always group together, and are very funny to be in the same zone in as they like to joke around.
I also play Warcraft III and Starcraft with my younger brother (11 years removed) who still lives at home with my parents, 900 miles away. It's a good time to bond with him despite the fact that I moved on to college when he was 6 years old.
So, in short, no, I don't think video games are enforcing isolation on family members - if anything, they are giving family members that are othewise distant and wouldn't get a chance to interact, an opportunity to do something together, even if they are nearly 1000 miles apart, as if they were sitting around a game board in the living room. -
Re:Because maybe they actually like Lumines?
Is there a way for an individual customer to get a retail store to let him check the firmware version on a PSP before buying it?
Yes. -
Re:Adventure games
You're not seriously comparing the complexity of a Gameboy emulator to that of a Nintendo 64 emulator, are you?
Sure he is, and with good reason. The DS actually has quite a complex architecture (main CPU, one 3D rasterizer + T&L unit, two 2D rasterizers), with most of the features offered by the N64.
The typical size of N64 emulators on the PC/Mac are in the 1-3MB range, even with all the fancy features you expect. You can also find them in the Sub-1MB range for platforms that are short on memory.
So yes, it is certainly reasonable.
Some advanced features like JITting (an actual possibility since Nintendo knows both their system and their software) will chew through memory like candy.
Why would you waste time with JIT recompilation when you know the source and target platforms, AND control distribution? You can do an optimized conversion before you even offer the game for download, and save yourself the memory. -

Ban coincidenceIs it any coincidence that Sparter launched/made their announcement on 6/13, two days after Blizzard performed a massive ban of bot/farming accounts?
How will Sparter handle customers who get banned? http://www.qj.net/WoW-gold-farmer-laments-on-Blizz ard-s-account-purge/pg/49/aid/94937I suspect Sparter will have numerous buyers and sellers committed, will have funds in transfer and the next wave of bans will come through and leave them holding monies without WoW account connections. Convenient.
That or some of these game companies have an underground connection with Sparter to ferret out gold farmers/bots, profit from the farm/ban/re-buy account cycle or to share in the commissions. Regardless the whole business stinks and undermines the gaming experience as a whole.

Japan has no Wii Sports bundled with the console
Japan has no Wii Sports bundled with the console, precisely to keep the price point to 25,000 yen. The game is still extraordinarily popular (I think it had the highest attach rate for the console at launch, possibly exceeded by Zelda). You can see the terrible devastation this decision has caused their sales numbers. They only sell six consoles for every PS3 sold...
Here is a random week in May.
* DS Lite - 160,009
* Wii - 55,725
* PSP - 33438
* PS2 - 11854
* PS3 - 8562
* X360 - 2369
* GBM - 403

Homebrew not as good as the DS? I think not...
I keep hearing that the PSP doesn't have as good Homebrew as the DS. Well that's just plain not true, for example here's my source for all things PSP and homebrew: http://forums.qj.net/f-qjnet-sony-psp-forums-48.h
t ml/ There are at least 180 people on this forum at any given time and there are THOUSANDS of homebrew applications in the files section. I'm sorry but all this DS fanfare about a less than lively homebrew scene just don't have their facts straight. Personally I bought my PSP early and got straight into the hacking scene as soon as I could. I've never been left feeling that I wasn't getting my moneys worth, and I've even bought a couple UMD movies (a 4 hour bus trip to Sydney can get mighty boring and sometimes ripping isn't an option). In fact I don't think I've ever come across something that I've wanted to do with my PSP and haven't been able to do. Here's just a short list of things I've done over the past couple of years using homebrew: - NES/SNES/N64 emulators - Universal IR Remote Controller - Remote access of my desktop at home over wireless or the internet - Streaming video and audio in real time over my wireless network and over the internet - Personal Organizer and calendar This is in addition to all the stuff that comes default these days with the base firmware. The PSP is a great platform and it's really worth every dollar you'll spend on it. Problem is it's not as cheap as a DS and the proprietary-ness of the platform seems to irk all the slashdotters. The DS might be selling more but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a better platform. -
Sunspots disorient bees.
Not Cell phones, not parasites (this time), not Genetically Modified crops, and not modern pesticides.
You are technical, that is why you are on Slashdot.
Ask yourself, How do bees navigate, how do they see? Keep those questions in the front of your mind, and read on...
The beekeepers are not reporting dead bees, they are reporting missing bees.
I first hear about this on NPR Science Friday report about missing honey bees.
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?story Id=7806292
Although it is 26 minutes long, you need to listen to it.... nothing about sunspots, but about MISSING bees.
As a follow up, just google "bees crops", you will find this is happening in all over planet earth.
The sun spot cycle is just starting, it won't peak until 2010 - 2011. Google nasa sites.
The sun flips its poles every 11 years (yea, I didn't know that either)
The worst is yet to come, the sun spots just started and won't peak until 2010 - 2011.
And finally, I seem to have some independent agreement, I recently found this.

Couldn't you recreate cosmic rays or at least elements of them somehow in an environment with small rats or something and see if they evolve / mutate more often? Or is it impossible to recreate cosmic rays?
This also reminds me that just recently they have found a giant super massive black hole which seems to be the source of mysterious cosmic rays in our universe.

Re:questions
* why doesn't he install it on his own? no better way to do it and the interwebs are full of documentation
Ironically, the site that is linked in the summary doesn't help "Jake" out at all. The walkthrough to install Gentoo on a PS3 is actually LINKED to at the bottom of the page. The article on the site is exactly like the summary. He is taking hackneyed Gentoo arguments, which really have nothing to do with development of installing Gentoo on your PS3, and posting them in his blog as if he had to sell people on the install. Gentoo on a PS3 was already done by the Gentoo folks and is quoted as the main source of the "wiki" linked at the bottom. The wiki, though, does give you good install insight such as "(Press Enter)" Much of Gentoo.org's wiki has been copied word-for-word by these other guys
This website has the looks of a barebones advertisement page: "IntelliTXT," full sidebar ads, a "blog" network, links to add it to 7 blog/news aggregators, all topped off with a HORRIBLY done CSS job. In the author's own defense, he did a pretty good job of getting his advertisement out. At the heart of it, it seems like a pretty generic linux hobbyist story: guy finds something with electricity running through it and installs linux on it. Jake isn't even registered to the site, but still asks people to "keep watching" for updates to the install/addon process. They also didn't provide any pictures
:(I'd question the need for Gentoo on PS3 in this situation, their lack of evidence of an install, and the actual existence of "Jake".

if only it projected
As a phone and media player, this is a cpable device. It also scores big regarding interface and controls. As a web browser, however, it's still a bit stunted. There's only so much you can do with a 320x480 screen, especially at such high dpi. What would have been cool is a tiny projector on the top, which could display an SVGA output at a dozen lumens. Apparently, such a feature is already in the works, so maybe V2. With such a feature, an iPhone could truly replace just about everything.
I can only wonder what the phone of 2020 will do. -
E.T. the game shipped 2 million units!
Yes, the game shipped 2 million units, but nobody bought them.
For Sony it's debatable what is worse... losing $300 million dollars by selling these units, or losing more money having them sit on the shelves. I guess sitting on the shelves is worse.
It would also be interesting to find out how badly the actual sales numbers really are, when returns and resells on returned units is taken into account. I suspect they aren't terribly great.
Fanboys can defend Sony all they want, but they will absolutely lie to the public to achieve whatever ends they desire. "David Manning" reviewer for the fictional "Ridgefield Press" proved it, Rootkits re-affirmed it, dodging repeated calls to fix the exploding laptop batteries proved it, and even with the PS3, their desire to sell gamers snake oil continues to prove it.
The fact that they are crowing about "Units Shipped" is very telling indeed. They are damned by the absence of meaningful numbers. Die in a fire, Sony. -

Wii doesn't win. PSP wins.
Silently, like a stealthy ninja...
The PSP has never been stronger, but its only partially because of what Sony has done. Dark Alex, and the ocean of other homebrew hacks have open up the power of this truely awesome little piece of hardware that was way ahead of its time, *IF* you are comfortable flashing firmwares, reading FAQS, and copying files across to a USB drive device.
The DS, PS3, and Wii aren't even in the same league. Simply because they aren't very hackable. A side by side comparison between tweaked out PSP makes an IPOD or ZUNE, makes the later look like an unattractive brick. You've got a beautiful screen on the PSP, wifi, inet browser, run ISOs right from the memory card, play movies, music, streamcast music, trillian style chat with afkim, thousands and thousands of ROM games with the slew of emulators out there, the list goes on... not to mention its portable. Install a homebrew firmware, get a huge memstick, tons of ISOs and ROMS, and a good clear fullbody protective case for it, and find nirvana.

The only better gaming platform, IMHO, is a laptop, or PC. I don't even consider most consoles as viable gaming platforms simply because they can not or are anethma to running homebrew. Sony is hostilily opposed to homebrew, but in the case of the PSP, they were pwned by a lot of dedicated hardcore fans... and I think in the end the fight between both factions produced a truely marvelous state of affairs for the PSP.
Sony should of came out with a next version, upgrading the wifi to G or better, scrapping the UMD and substituing a harddrive, maybe adding a second mini joystick like many wanted, and some sort of keyboard interface. Still the PSP is very neat the way it is. More fun and useful than a PocketPC or Ipod by a lot. -

where does it mention Linux?
Where exactly in the Iwata Asks article does it say it runs on a proprietery version of the Linux kernel?
Infact where does it mention the Wii runs Linux on it at all?
I think I found the story, thanks google. And it says that its a rumor from one of the designers who said:"Wii will have Linux as operating system with proprietary GUI and applications based on commonly open source for Linux programs."
Since when did "GUI applications" count as in the kernel?
Story found on:
http://wii.qj.net/Wii-Will-Use-Linux-as-Operating- System-with-Proprietary-GUI-/pg/49/aid/60531
Another quote direct from the so called "insider"but the final system in closed and will allow only signed code etc and will be very secure, even though it's technically compatible with a world of already existing software
I bet Nintendo are thanking their lucky stars that GPLv3 isn't out and that Linus Torvalds prefers v2 anyway, isn't there going to be something in it about locking out modified versions?
I am skeptical about this guy, but make up your own mind,

I hope the guys running it don't step in, but rather I hope the players can in-game construct an appropriate response to the guy.
It'll be very interesting to see if this springs up new insurance companies in EVE to protect against it -- or perhaps a new type of organization to certify banks -- or, etc. In EVE the possiblities seem endless. -

Devhook running on firmware 1.50 will allow you to load firmwares up to 2.71 into memory and then when you turn off and on your PSP you will be beack to 1.50. I am currently working on a howto, it is still under construction but if you want you can check it out at www.devhook.ca (The software is not available there yet, try http://pspupdates.qj.net/ for that )
